Let $G$ be a nilpotent group and $a\in G$. Let $a^G=\{g^{-1}ag\mid g\in G\}$ be the conjugacy class of $a$ in $G$. Assume that $a^G$ and $b^G$ are conjugacy classes of $G$ with the property that $|a^G|=|b^G|=p$, where $p$ is an odd prime number.
Set $a^G b^G=\{xy\mid x\in a^G, y\in b^G\}$. Then either $a^G b^G=(ab)^G$ or $a^G b^G$ is the union of at least $\frac{p+1}{2}$ distinct conjugacy classes. As an application of the previous result, given any nilpotent group $G$ and any conjugacy class $a^G$ of size $p$, we describe the square $a^G a^G$ of $a^G$ in terms of conjugacy classes of $G$.
This paper initiates the study of effective twisted conjugacy separability for finitely generated groups, which measures the complexity of separating distinct twisted conjugacy classes via finite quotients. The focus is on nilpotent groups, and our main result shows that there is a polynomial upper bound for twisted conjugacy separability. That allows us to study regular conjugacy separability in the case of virtually nilpotent groups, where we compute a polynomial upper bound as well. As another application, we improve the work of the second author by giving a precise calculation of conjugacy…
We offer in this note a self-contained proof of the fact that a finitely generated group is not virtually nilpotent if and only if it has a quotient with the infinite conjugacy class (ICC) propoerty. This proof is a modern presentation of the original proof, by McLain (1956) and Duguid and McLain (1956).
It is proved that for any prime $p$ a finitely generated nilpotent group is conjugacy separable in the class of finite $p$-groups if and only if the torsion subgroup of it is a finite $p$-group and the quotient group by the torsion subgroup is abelian.
Let $N$ be a finitely generated nilpotent group. Algorithm is constructed such, that for every automorphism $ϕ\in Aut(N)$ defines the Reidemeister number $R(ϕ).$ It is proved that any free nilpotent group of rank $r = 2$ or $r = 3$ and class $c \geq 4r,$ or rank $r \geq 4$ and class $c \geq 2r,$ belongs to the class $R_{\infty}.$
Let $\mathbf{G}$ be a unipotent group scheme defined in terms of a nilpotent Lie lattice over the ring $\mathcal{O}$ of integers of a number field. We consider bivariate zeta functions of groups of the form $\mathbf{G}(\mathcal{O})$ encoding, respectively, the numbers of isomorphism classes of irreducible complex representations of finite dimensions and the numbers of conjugacy classes of congruence quotients of the associated groups. We show that the domains of convergence and meromorphic continuation of these zeta functions of groups $\mathbf{G}(\mathcal{O})$ are independent of the number fi…
An algorithm is constructed that, when given an explicit presentation of a finitely generated nilpotent group $G,$ decides for any pair of endomorphisms $φ, ψ: G \to G$ and any pair of elements $u, v \in G,$ whether or not the equation $(xφ)u = v (xψ)$ has a solution $x \in G.$ Thus it is shown that the problem of the title is decidable. Also we present an algorithm that produces a finite set of generators of the subgroup (equalizer) $Eq_{φ, ψ}(G) \leq G$ of all elements $u \in G$ such that $u φ= u ψ.$
There currently exists no algebraic algorithm for computing twisted conjugacy classes in free groups. We propose a new technique for deciding twisted conjugacy relations using nilpotent quotients. Our technique is generalization of the common abelianization method, but admits significantly greater rates of success. We present experimental results demonstrating the efficacy of the technique, and detail how it can be applied the related settings of surface groups and doubly twisted conjugacy.
We prove that every subnormal subgroup of p-power index in a right-angled Artin group is conjugacy p-separable. As an application, we prove that every right-angled Artin group is conjugacy separable in the class of torsion-free nilpotent groups. As another application, we prove that the outer automorphism group of a right-angled Artin group is virtually residually p-finite. We also prove that the Torelli group of a right-angled group is residually torsion-free nilpotent, hence residually p-finite and bi-orderable.
A group is said to have the $R_\infty$ property if every automorphism has an infinite number of twisted conjugacy classes. We study the question whether $G$ has the $R_\infty$ property when $G$ is a finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group. As a consequence, we show that for every positive integer $n\ge 5$, there is a compact nilmanifold of dimension $n$ on which every homeomorphism is isotopic to a fixed point free homeomorphism. As a by-product, we give a purely group theoretic proof that the free group on two generators has the $R_\infty$ property. The $R_{\infty}$ property for virtu…
We study generalisations of conjugacy separability in restricted wreath products of groups. We provide an effective upper bound for $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of a wreath product $A \wr B$ in terms of the $\mathcal{C}$-conjugacy separability of $A$ and $B$, the growth of $\mathcal{C}$-cyclic subgroup separability of $B$, and the $\mathcal{C}$-residual girth of $B.$ As an application, we provide a characterisation of when $A \wr B$ is $p$-conjugacy separable. We use this characterisation to the provide for each prime $p$ an example of wreath products with infinite base group that are …
We calculate asymptotic estimates for the conjugacy growth function of finitely generated class 2 nilpotent groups whose derived subgroup is infinite cyclic, including the so-called higher Heisenberg groups. We prove that these asymptotics are stable when passing to commensurable groups, by understanding their twisted conjugacy growth. We also use these estimates to prove that, in certain cases, the conjugacy growth series cannot be a holonomic function.
We characterize the group property of being with infinite conjugacy classes (or icc, i.e. in which all conjugacy classes beside 1 are infinite) for split extensions of groups.
We characterize the group property of being with infinite conjugacy classes (or icc, in which all conjugacy classes beside 1 are infinite) for extensions of some specific groups ; namely extensions of abelian, centerless, icc, or word hyperbolic groups.
We prove a formula connecting the number of unipotent conjugacy classes in a maximal parabolic subgroup of a finite general linear group with the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in various parabolic subgroups in smaller dimensions. We generalise this formula and deduce a number of corollaries; in particular, we express the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices over a finite field in terms of the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in maximal parabolic subgroups over the same field. We show how the numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in parabolic subgroups of small …
Let GL(n,q) be the group of nxn invertible matrices over a field with q elements, and SL(n,q) be the group of nxn matrices with determinant 1 over a field with q elements. We prove that the product of any two non-central conjugacy classes in GL(n,q) is the union of at least q-1 distinct conjugacy classes, and that the product of any two non-central conjugacy classes in SL(n,q) is the union of at least $\lceil\frac{q}{2} \rceil$ distinct conjugacy classes.
In his paper "Finite groups have many conjugacy classes" (J. London Math. Soc (2) 46 (1992), 239-249), L. Pyber proved the to date best general lower bounds for the number of conjugacy classes of a finite group in terms of the order of the group. In this paper we strengthen the main results in Pyber's paper.
We classify all finite groups G such that the product of any two non-inverse conjugacy classes of G is always a conjugacy class of G. We also classify all finite groups G for which the product of any two G-conjugacy classes which are not inverse modulo the center of G is again a conjugacy class of G.
For simple algebraic groups defined over algebraically closed fields of good characteristic, we give upper bounds on the covering numbers of unipotent conjugacy classes in terms of their (co)ranks and in terms of their dimensions.
In this paper we classify the finite groups satisfying the following property $P_4$: their orders of representatives are set-wise relatively prime for any 4 distinct non-central conjugacy classes.
We construct a hyperbolic group with a finitely presented subgroup, which has infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. We also use a version of Morse theory with high dimensional horizontal cells and use handle cancellation arguments to produce other examples of subgroups of CAT(0) groups with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.
In this note, we determine the finite groups whose poset of conjugacy classes of subgroups has breaking points. This leads to a new characterization of the generalized quaternion $2$-groups. A generalization of this property is also studied.
Let S_n be the symmetric group on n-letters. Fix n>5. Given any nontrivial $α,β\in S_n$, we prove that the product $α^{S_n}β^{S_n}$ of the conjugacy classes $α^{S_n}$ and $β^{S_n}$ is never a conjugacy class. Furthermore, if n is not even and $n$ is not a multiple of three, then $α^{S_n}β^{S_n}$ is the union of at least three distinct conjugacy classes. We also describe the elements $α,β\in S_n$ in the case when $α^{S_n}β^{S_n}$ is the union of exactly two distinct conjugacy classes.
Let A_n be the alternating group on n letters. For n>5, we describe the elements alpha, beta in A_n when alpha^{A_n} beta^{A_n} is the union of at most four distinct conjugacy classes.
We study twisted conjugacy classes of the unit element in different groups. Fel'shtyn and Troitsky showed that the twisted conjugacy class of the unit element of an abelian group is a subgroup for every automorphism. The structure is investigated of a group whose twisted conjugacy class of the unit element is a subgroup for every automorphism (inner automorphism).
We solve the following algorithmic problems using TC0 circuits, or in logspace and quasilinear time, uniformly in the class of nilpotent groups with bounded nilpotency class and rank: subgroup conjugacy, computing the normalizer and isolator of a subgroup, coset intersection, and computing the torsion subgroup. Additionally, if any input words are provided in compressed form as straight-line programs or in Mal'cev coordinates the algorithms run in quartic time.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $a\in G$. Let $a^G=\{g^{-1}ag\mid g\in G\}$ be the conjugacy class of $a$ in $G$. Assume that $a^G$ and $b^G$ are conjugacy classes of $G$ with the property that ${\bf C}_G(a)={\bf C}_G(b)$. Then $a^G b^G$ is a conjugacy class if and only if $[a,G]=[b,G]=[ab,G]$ and $[ab,G]$ is a normal subgroup of $G$.
In this paper we consider finite 2-groups with odd number of real conjugacy classes. On one hand we show that if $k$ is an odd natural number less than 24, then there are only finitely many finite 2-groups with exactly $k$ real conjugacy classes. On the other hand we construct infinitely many finite 2-groups with exactly 25 real conjugacy classes. Both resuls are proven using pro-$p$ techniques and, in particular, we use the Kneser classification of semi-simple $p$-adic algebraic groups.
We give a geometric proof based on recent work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte that the lamplighter group $L_n$ has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes for any automorphism $\vp$ only when $n$ is divisible by 2 or 3, originally proved by Gonçalves and Wong. We determine when the wreath product $G \wr \Z$ has this same property for several classes of finite groups $G$, including symmetric groups and some nilpotent groups.
In this paper, we study the structure of finite groups with a large number of conjugacy classes of $p$-elements for some prime $p$. As consequences, we obtain some new criteria for the existence of normal $p$-complements in finite groups.
In this paper, we consider the conjugacy growth function of a group, which counts the number of conjugacy classes which intersect a ball of radius $n$ centered at the identity. We prove that in the case of virtually polycyclic groups, this function is either exponential or polynomially bounded, and is polynomially bounded exactly when the group is virtually nilpotent. The proof is fairly short, and makes use of the fact that any polycyclic group has a subgroup of finite index which can be embedded as a lattice in a Lie group, as well as exponential radical of Lie groups and Dirichlet's approxi…
We prove that Ad-semisimple conjugacy classes in a connected Lie group $G$ are closed embedded submanifolds of $G$. We also prove that if $α:H\to G$ is a homomorphism of connected Lie groups such that the kernel of $α$ is discrete in $H$, then for an Ad-semisimple conjugacy class $C$ in $G$, every connected component of $α^{-1}(C)$ is a conjugacy class in $H$. Corresponding results for adjoint orbits in real Lie algebras are also proved.
For a finite group $G$, we consider the problem of counting simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples and simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. Let $α_{G,n}$ denote the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of $n$-tuples, and $β_{G,n}$ the number of simultaneous conjugacy classes of commuting $n$-tuples in $G$. The generating functions $A_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} α_{G,n}t^n,$ and $B_G(t) = \sum_{n\geq 0} β_{G,n}t^n$ are rational functions of $t$. This paper concern studied of normalized functions $A_G(t/|G|)$ and $B_G(t/|G|)$ for finite $p$-groups of rank at most $5…
Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group, where $p$ is a prime number, and $a\in G$. Denote by $\Cl(a)=\{gag^{-1}\mid g\in G\}$ the conjugacy class of $a$ in $G$. Assume that $|\Cl(a)|=p^n$. Then $\Cl(a)\Cl(a^{-1})=\{xy\mid x\in \Cl(a), y\in \Cl(a^{-1})\}$ is the union of at least $n(p-1)+1$ distinct conjugacy classes of $G$.
We construct a CAT(0) group containing a finitely presented subgroup with infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements. Unlike previous examples (which were based on right-angled Artin groups) our ambient CAT(0) group does not contain any rank 3 free abelian subgroups. We also construct examples of groups of type F_n inside mapping class groups, Aut(F), and Out(F) which have infinitely many conjugacy classes of finite-order elements.
A group is nested if the centers of the irreducible characters form a chain. In this paper, we will show that there is a set of subgroups associated with the conjugacy classes of group so that a group is nested if and only if these subgroups form a chain.
We prove that for every $ε> 0$ there exists a $δ> 0$ so that every group of order $n \geq 3$ has at least $δ\log_{2} n/{(\log_{2} \log_{2} n)}^{3+ε}$ conjugacy classes. This sharpens earlier results of Pyber and Keller. Bertram speculates whether it is true that every finite group of order $n$ has more than $\log_{3}n$ conjugacy classes. We answer Bertram's question in the affirmative for groups with a trivial solvable radical.
In 2000, L. Héthelyi and B. Külshammer proved that if $p$ is a prime number dividing the order of a finite solvable group $G$, then $G$ has at least $2\sqrt{p-1}$ conjugacy classes. In this paper we show that if $p$ is large, the result remains true for arbitrary finite groups.
Let $G$ be a finite group and $π$ be a set of primes. We show that if the number of conjugacy classes of $π$-elements in $G$ is larger than $5/8$ times the $π$-part of $|G|$ then $G$ possesses an abelian Hall $π$-subgroup which meets every conjugacy class of $π$-elements in $G$. This extends and generalizes a result of W. H. Gustafson.
We provide a new upper bound on the number of conjugacy classes in the group $U_n(q)$ of unitriangular matrices over a finite field. We also compute a similar upper bound for every group in the lower central series of $U_n(q)$.
Let $G$ be a primitive permutation group of degree $n$ with nonabelian socle, and let $k(G)$ be the number of conjugacy classes of $G$. We prove that either $k(G)<n/2$ and $k(G)=o(n)$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$, or $G$ belongs to explicit families of examples.
In analogy to the disjoint cycle decomposition in permutation groups, Ore and Specht define a decomposition of elements of the full monomial group and exploit this to describe conjugacy classes and centralisers of elements in the full monomial group. We generalise their results to wreath products whose base group need not be finite and whose top group acts faithfully on a finite set. We parameterise conjugacy classes and centralisers of elements in such wreath products explicitly. For finite wreath products, our approach yields efficient algorithms for finding conjugating elements, conjugacy c…
The trialitarian automorphisms considered in this paper are the outer automorphisms of order 3 of adjoint classical groups of type D_4 over arbitrary fields. A one-to-one correspondence is established between their conjugacy classes and similarity classes of symmetric compositions on 8-dimensional quadratic spaces. Using the known classification of symmetric compositions, we distinguish two conjugacy classes of trialitarian automorphisms over algebraically closed fields. For type I, the group of fixed points is of type G_2, whereas it is of type A_2 for trialitarian automorphisms of type II.
Let $H$ be an extension of a finite group $Q$ by a finite group $G$. Inspired by the results of duality theorems for étale gerbes on orbifolds, we describe the number of conjugacy classes of $H$ that maps to the same conjugacy class of $Q$. Furthermore, we prove a generalization of the orthogonality relation between characters of $G$.
