In this note we prove analogues of the main theorems of complex multiplication for abelian varieties for K3 surfaces. This is done by studying the field of definition of the period morphism for complex K3 surfaces. More precisely we relate the moduli spaces of primitively polarized K3 surfaces with level structures over $\Q$, constructed using algebraic stacks, to the canonical model of the Shimura variety associated to $\SO(2,19)$.
Let $m \geqslant 6$ be an even integer. In this short note we prove that the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface with associated group of automorphisms isomorphic to $C_2^2 \rtimes_2 C_m$ admits complex multiplication. We then extend this result to provide a criterion under which the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface admits complex multiplication.
We report on our project to find explicit examples of $K3$ surfaces having real or complex multiplication. Our strategy is to search through the arithmetic consequences of RM and CM. In order to do this, an efficient method is needed for point counting on surfaces defined over finite fields. For this, we describe algorithms that are $p$-adic in nature.
We study the good reduction modulo p of K3 surfaces with complex multiplication. If a K3 surface with complex multiplication has good reduction, we calculate the Picard number and the height of the formal Brauer group of the reduction. Moreover, if the reduction is supersingular, we calculate its Artin invariant under some assumptions. Our results generalize some results of Shimada for K3 surfaces with Picard number 20. Our methods rely on the main theorem of complex multiplication for K3 surfaces by Rizov, an explicit description of the Breuil-Kisin modules associated with Lubin-Tate characte…
An abelian surface A over a field K has potential quaternionic multiplication if the ring End_\bar K (A) of geometric endomorphisms of A is an order in an indefinite rational division quaternion algebra. In this brief note, we study the possible structures of the ring of endomorphisms of these surfaces and we provide explicit examples of Jacobians of curves of genus two which show that our result is sharp.
We prove that the abelian $K$-surfaces whose endomorphism algebra is a quaternion algebra are parametrized, up to isogeny, by the $K$-rational points of the quotient of certain Shimura curves by the group of their Atkin-Lehner involutions.
In this article we compute new theta relations which define the moduli space of abelian surfaces with real multiplication by square root three. We give the locus of square root three abelian surfaces in terms of the canonical coordinates on Mumford's moduli space of abelian surfaces with theta structure. The method that we use to compute the real multiplication theta relations is of purely algebraic nature. It differs from Runge's method and recent work by Gruenewald. We expect that our method generalizes to higher discriminants.
Let $X/ \mathbb{C}$ be a K3 surface with complex multiplication by the ring of integers of a CM field $E$. We show that $X$ can always be defined over an Abelian extension $K/E$ explicitly determined by the discriminant form of the lattice $\mathrm{NS}(X)$. We then construct a model of $X$ over $K$ via Galois-descent and we study some of its basic properties, in particular we determine its Galois representation explicitly. Finally, we apply our results to give upper and lower bounds for a minimal field of definition for $X$ in terms of the class number of $E$ and the discriminant of $\mathrm{N…
We study K3 surfaces with complex multiplication following the classical work of Shimura on CM abelian varieties. After we translate the problem in terms of the arithmetic of the CM field and its idèles, we proceed to study some abelian extensions that arise naturally in this context. We then make use of our computations to determine the fields of moduli of K3 surfaces with CM and to classify their Brauer groups. More specifically, we provide an algorithm that given a number field $K$ and a CM number field $E$, returns a finite lists of groups which contains $\mathrm{Br}(\overline{X})^{G_K}$ f…
We construct explicit examples of $K3$ surfaces over ${\mathbb Q}$ having real multiplication. Our examples are of geometric Picard rank 16. The standard method for the computation of the Picard rank provably fails for the surfaces constructed.
The goal of this expository article is to present a proof that is as direct and elementary as possible of the fundamental theorem of complex multiplication (Shimura, Taniyama, Langlands, Tate, Deligne et al.). The article is a revision of part of my manuscript, Complex Multiplication, April 7, 2006.
We report on a new approach, as well as some related experiments, to construct families of K3 surfaces having real or complex multiplication. The approach is based on an explicit description of the transcendental part of the cohomology in a topological way, using topological tori. Fundamental ideas include considering the period space of marked K3 surfaces, determining the periods by numerical integration, as well as tracing the modular curve by a numerical continuation method.
We construct one dimensional families of Abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication which also have an automorphism of order three or four. Using Barth's description of the moduli space of (2,4)-polarized Abelian surfaces, we find the Shimura curve parametrizing these Abelian surfaces in a specific case. We explicitly relate these surfaces to the Jacobians of genus two curves studied by Hashimoto and Murabayashi. We also describe a (Humbert) surface in Barth's moduli space which parametrizes Abelian surfaces with real multiplication by Z[\sqrt{2}].
For families of $K3$ surfaces, we establish a sufficient criterion for real or complex multiplication. Our criterion is arithmetic in nature. It may show, at first, that the generic fibre of the family has a nontrivial endomorphism field. Moreover, the endomorphism field does not shrink under specialisation. As an application, we present two explicit families of $K3$ surfaces having real multiplication by $\bbQ(\sqrt{2})$ and $\bbQ(\sqrt{5})$, respectively.
Consider the Jacobian of a genus two curve defined over a finite field and with complex multiplication. In this paper we show that if the l-Sylow subgroup of the Jacobian is not cyclic, then the embedding degree of the Jacobian with respect to l is one.
We prove that the jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve y^2=f(x) has no nontrivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure of the ground field of characteristic zero if the Galois group of the polynomial f is ``very big''.
We give an efficient, deterministic algorithm to decide if two abelian varieties over a number field are isogenous. From this, we derive an algorithm to compute the endomorphism ring of an elliptic curve over a number field.
Let $C$ be a smooth, absolutely irreducible genus-$3$ curve over a number field $M$. Suppose that the Jacobian of $C$ has complex multiplication by a sextic CM-field $K$. Suppose further that $K$ contains no imaginary quadratic subfield. We give a bound on the primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $M$ such that the stable reduction of $C$ at $\mathfrak{p}$ contains three irreducible components of genus $1$.
Given an elliptic curve $E$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ which has potential complex multiplication by the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ of an imaginary quadratic field $K$ we construct a polynomial $P_E \in \mathbb{Z}[x,y]$ which is a planar model of $E$ and such that the Mahler measure $m(P_E) \in \mathbb{R}$ is related to the special value of the $L$-function $L(E,s)$ at $s = 2$.
We show how non-vanishing of p-adic L functions controls the dimensions of Selmer varieties associated to the complement of the origin in an elliptic curve with CM. As a corollary, one obtains a π_1-proof of the theorem of Siegel for such curves.
We give examples of smooth plane quartics over $\mathbb{Q}$ with complex multiplication over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ by a maximal order with primitive CM type. We describe the required algorithms as we go, these involve the reduction of period matrices, the fast computation of Dixmier-Ohno invariants, and reconstruction from these invariants. Finally, we discuss some of the reduction properties of the curves that we obtain.
This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.
In this note, we prove a criteria for supersingularity when the variety has a large automorphism group and a perfect bilinear pairing. This criteria unifies and extends many known results on the supersingularity of curves and varieties and in particular, applies to a large family of Artin-Schreier curves.
For an algebraic K3 surface with complex multiplication (CM), algebraic fibres of the associated twistor space away from the equator are again of CM type. In this paper, we show that algebraic fibres corresponding to points at the same altitude of the twistor base $S^2\simeq \mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{C}$ share the same CM endomorphism field. Moreover, we determine all the admissible Picard numbers of the twistor fibres.
We prove a variant of the reciprocity laws for CM abelian varieties, CM K3 surfaces, and CM points on Shimura varieties. Given a CM object over the complex numbers, our variation describes the set of all models over a given number field $F$ in terms of associated representations of the absolute Galois group of $F$. An essential feature is that we work with stacky Shimura varieties to deal with objects that have non-trivial automorphisms. To prove the result on K3 surfaces, we show that the stack of polarized K3 surfaces of given degree is an open substack of a certain Shimura stack. The precis…
We prove that in odd characteristic the jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve $y^2=f(x)$ has no nontrivial endomorphisms over an algebraic closure of the ground field if the Galois group of the polynomial $f$ of even degree is ``very big". The case of characteristic zero was previously treated by the author (Math. Res. Letters 7(2000), 123--132).
In this paper we give a general construction of transcendental lattices for K3 surfaces with real multiplication by arbitrary field up to degree 6 along with formula for their discriminants. We also show that all simple Abelian fourfolds with definite quaternionic multiplication can be realized as Kuga-Satake varieties of K3 surfaces with Picard rank 16 and real multiplication by a quadratic field by keeping track of the arithmetic input on both sides.
The endomorphism algebra of a K3 type Hodge structure is a totally real field or a CM field. In this paper we give a low brow introduction to the case of a totally real field. We give existence results for the Hodge structures, for their polarizations and for certain K3 surfaces. We consider the Kuga Satake variety of these Hodge structures and we discuss some examples. Finally we indicate various open problems related to the Hodge conjecture.
Let X be a smooth projective toric surface and L and M two line bundles on X. If L is ample and M is generated by global sections, then we show that the natural map from H^0(X,L) tensor H^0(X,M) to H^0(X, L tensor M) is surjective. We also consider a generalization to the case when M is an arbitrary line bundle with h^0(X,M) > 0.
We compute equations for real multiplication on the divisor classes of genus two curves via algebraic correspondences. We do so by implementing van Wamelen's method for computing equations for endomorphisms of Jacobians on examples drawn from the algebraic models for Hilbert modular surfaces computed by Elkies and Kumar. We also compute a correspondence over the universal family for the Hilbert modular surface of discriminant 5 and use our equations to prove a conjecture of A. Wright on dynamics over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces.
In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.
Let E/K be an elliptic curve with complex multiplication and let $K^{ab}$ be the Abelian closure of $K$. We prove in this article that there exists a constant $c(E/K)$ such that : for all point $P\in E(\bar{K})-E_{tors}$, we have \[\hat{h}(P)\geq\frac{c(E/K)}{D}(\frac{\log \log 5D}{\log 2D})^{13},\] where $D=[K^{ab}(P):K^{ab}]$. This result extends to the case of elliptic curve s with complex multiplication the previous resultof Amoroso-Zannier \cite{AZ} on the analogous problem on the multiplicative group $\mathbb{G}_m$, and generalizes to the case of extensions of degree D the result of Bake…
We analyze complex multiplication for Jacobians of curves of genus 3, as well as the resulting Shimura class groups and their subgroups corresponding to Galois conjugation over the reflex field. We combine our results with numerical methods to find CM fields $K$ for which there exist both hyperelliptic and non-hyperelliptic curves whose Jacobian has complex multiplication by $\mathbb{Z}_K$. More precisely, we find all sextic CM fields $K$ in the LMFDB for which (heuristically) Jacobians of both types with CM by $\mathbb{Z}_K$ exist. There turn out to be 14 such fields among the 547,156 sextic …
For appropriate $N\ge 3$ and $d<0,$ the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces with level $N$ structure and anti-holomorphic multiplication by $\mathcal O_d$ (the ring of integers in $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d})$) is shown to consist of the real points of a quasi-projective algebraic variety defined over $\mathbb Q$, and to coincide with finitely many copies of the quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by the principal congruence subgroup of level $N$ in $\mathbf{SL}(2, \mathcal O_d).$
We give a new algorithm for constructing Picard curves over a finite field with a given endomorphism ring. This has important applications in cryptography since curves of genus 3 allow for smaller key sizes than elliptic curves. For a sextic CM-field $K$ containing the cube roots of unity, we define and compute certain class polynomials modulo small primes and then use the Chinese Remainder Theorem to construct the class polynomials over the rationals. We also give some examples.
For an elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture predicts that the rank of Mordell-Weil group $E(K)$ is equal to the order of the zero of $L(E_{/ K},s)$ at $s=1$. In this paper, we shall give a proof for elliptic curves with complex multiplications. The key method of the proof is to reduce the Galois action of infinite order on the Tate module of an elliptic curve to that of finite order by using the $p$-adic Hodge theory. As a corollary, we can determine whether a given natural number is a congruent number (congruent number problem). This problem is one of the olde…
We construct families of Calabi-Yau manifolds with dense set of complex multiplication fibers in an arbitrary dimension. We will also give explicite examples of complex multiplication fibers. For this construction we use families of curves with dense set of complex multiplication fibers. In addition, we give examples of such families for each genus less or equal 7 and we study the generic Hodge groups of families of cyclic covers of the projective line.
Despite the transcendental nature of the twistor construction, the algebraic fibres of the twistor space of a K3 surface share certain arithmetic properties. We prove that for a polarized K3 surface with complex multiplication, all algebraic fibres of its twistor space away from the equator have complex multiplication as well.
In this paper we study abelian varieties which correspond to CM points in the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. These are abelian varieties of even dimension with quaternion and complex multiplication. We describe them explicitly via isogenies to products of abelian varieties of smaller dimension together with estimates on the degree of the isogeny.
We construct and study two series of curves whose Jacobians admit complex multiplication. The curves arise as quotients of Galois coverings of the projective line with Galois group metacyclic groups $G_{q,3}$ of order $3q$ with $q \equiv 1 \mod 3$ an odd prime, and $G_m$ of order $2^{m+1}$. The complex multiplications arise as quotients of double coset algebras of the Galois groups of these coverings. We work out the CM-types and show that the Jacobians are simple abelian varieties.
We prove that the existence of an automorphism of finite order on a (defined over a number field) variety X implies the existence of algebraic linear relations between the logarithm of certain periods of X and the logarithm of special values of the Gamma-function. This implies that a slight variation of results by Anderson, Colmez and Gross on the periods of CM abelian varieties is valid for a larger class of CM motives. In particular, we prove a weak form of the period conjecture of Gross-Deligne. Our proof relies on the arithmetic fixed point formula (equivariant arithmetic Riemann-Roch theo…
We give an elementary argument for the well known fact that the endomorphism algebra $End_Q(A)$ of a simple complex abelian surface $A$ can neither be an imaginary quadratic field nor a definite quaternion algebra. Another consequence of our argument is that a two-dimensional complex torus $T$ with $Q(\sqrt{d})\subseteq End_Q(A)$ where $Q(\sqrt{d})$ is real quadratic, is algebraic.
In this note we provide examples of families of Calabi-Yau 3-manifolds over Shimura varieties, whose mirror families contain subfamilies over Shimura varieties. Therefore these original families and subfamilies on the mirror side contain dense sets of complex multiplication fibers. In view of the work of S. Gukov and C. Vafa this is of special interest in theoretical physics.
Classical theory of Complex Multiplication (CM) shows that all abelian extensions of a complex quadratic field $K$ are generated by the values of appropriate modular functions at the points of finite order of elliptic curves whose endomorphism rings are orders in $K$. For real quadratic fields, a similar description is not known. However, the relevant (still unproved) case of Stark conjectures ([St1]) strongly suggests that such a description must exist. In this paper we propose to use two--dimensional quantum tori corresponding to real quadratic irrationalities as a replacement of elliptic cu…
We show that complex multiplication on abelian varieties is equivalent to the existence of a constant rational Kähler metric. We give a sufficient condition for a mirror of an abelian variety of CM-type to be of CM-type as well. We also study the relationship between complex multiplication and rationality of a toroidal lattice vertex algebra.
Let E be an elliptic curve defined over a finite field. Balasubramanian and Koblitz have proved that if the l-th roots of unity m_l is not contained in the ground field, then a field extension of the ground field contains m_l if and only if the l-torsion points of E are rational over the same field extension. We generalize this result to Jacobians of genus two curves with complex multiplication. In particular, we show that the Weil- and the Tate-pairing on such a Jacobian are non-degenerate over the same field extension of the ground field.
By introducing a class of meromorphic functions with certain ramification structures on $\Bbb{CP}^1$, a new method for the determination of the Legendre representation of elliptic curves with complex multiplication is introduced. These functions reduce the desired representation to the solution of an explicitly given system of polynomial equations and makes no use of the knowledge of Hilbert class polynomial on which standard computations depend. As a byproduct, an algorithm for computing $j(kτ)$ in terms of $j(τ)$ is obtained and implemented for $k=2,3$. Solving the system of equations provid…
