We define an analytic index and prove a topological index theorem for a non-compact manifold $M\_0$ with poly-cylindrical ends. We prove that an elliptic operator $P$ on $M\_0$ has an invertible perturbation $P+R$ by a lower order operator if an only if its analytic index vanishes. As an application, we determine the $K$-theory groups of groupoid $C^*$--algebras of manifolds with corners.
We establish the stable homotopy classification of elliptic pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with corners and show that the set of elliptic operators modulo stable homotopy is isomorphic to the K-homology group of some stratified manifold. By way of application, generalizations of some recent results due to Monthubert and Nistor are given.
Given a manifold with corners $X$, we associates to it the corner structure simplicial complex $Σ_X$. Its reduced K-homology is isomorphic to the K-theory of the $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{K}_b(X)$ of b-compact operators on $X$. Moreover, the homology of $Σ_X$ is isomorphic to the conormal homology of $X$. In this note, we constract for an arbitrary abstract finite simplicial complex $Σ$ a manifold with corners $X$ such that $Σ_X\cong Σ$. As a consequence, the homology and K-homology which occur for finite simplicial complexes also occur as conormal homology of manifolds with corners and as K-the…
Given a connected manifold with corners of any codimension there is a very basic and computable homology theory called conormal homology defined in terms of faces and orientations of their conormal bundles, and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Our main theorem is that, for any manifold with corners $X$ of any codimension, there is a natural and explicit morphism $$K_*(\mathcal{K}_b(X)) \stackrel{T}{\longrightarrow} H^{pcn}_*(X,\mathbb{Q})$$ between the $K-$theory group of the algebra $\mathcal{K}_b(X)$ of $b$-compact operators for $X$ and the periodic conormal homology…
We compute the Hochschild, cyclic, and periodic cyclic homology groups of algebras of families of Laurent complete symbols on manifolds with corners. We show in particular that the spectral sequence associated with Hochschild homology degenerates at $E^2$ and converges to Hochschild homology. As a byproduct, we deduce an identification of the space of residue traces on fibrations by manifolds with corners. In the process, we prove several general results about algebras of complete symbols on manifolds with corners.
In this paper, we discuss index theory for Toeplitz operators on a discrete quarter-plane of two-variable rational matrix function symbols. By using Gohberg-Krein theory for matrix factorizations, we extend the symbols defined originally on a two-dimensional torus to some three-dimensional sphere and derive a formula to express their Fredholm indices through extended symbols. Variants for families of (self-adjoint) Fredholm quarter-plane Toeplitz operators and those preserving real structures are also included. For some bulk-edge gapped single-particle Hamiltonians of finite hopping range on a…
For every connected manifold with corners we use a homology theory called conormal homology, defined in terms of faces and incidences and whose cycles correspond geometrically to corner's cycles. Its Euler characteristic (over the rationals, dimension of the total even space minus the dimension of the total odd space), $χ_{cn}:=χ_0-χ_1$, is given by the alternated sum of the number of (open) faces of a given codimension. The main result of the present paper is that for a compact connected manifold with corners $X$ given as a finite product of manifolds with corners of codimension less or equal…
One way to geometrically encode the singularities of a stratified pseudomanifold is to endow its interior with an iterated fibred cusp metric. For such a metric, we develop and study a pseudodifferential calculus generalizing the Φ-calculus of Mazzeo and Melrose. Our starting point is the observation, going back to Melrose, that a stratified pseudomanifold can be `resolved' into a manifold with fibred corners. This allows us to define pseudodifferential operators as conormal distributions on a suitably blown-up double space. Various symbol maps are introduced, leading to the notion of full ell…
We study index theory for manifolds with Baas-Sullivan singularities using geometric K-homology with coefficients in a unital C*-algebra. In particular, we define a natural analog of the Baum-Connes assembly map for a torsion-free discrete group in the context of these singular spaces. The cases of singularities modelled on k-points (i.e., z/k-manifolds) and the circle are discussed in detail. In the case of the former, the associated index theorem is related to the Freed-Melrose index theorem; in the case of latter, the index theorem is related to work of Rosenberg.
We define Atiyah-Bott index on stratified manifolds and express it in topological terms. By way of example, we compute this index for geometric operators on manifolds with edges.
Elliptic operators on stratified manifolds with any finite number of strata are considered. Under certain assumptions on the symbols of operators, we obtain index formulas, which express index as a sum of indices of elliptic operators on the strata.
We consider the index problem for a wide class of nonlocal elliptic operators on a smooth closed manifold, namely differential operators with shifts induced by the action of an isometric diffeomorphism. The key to the solution is the method of uniformization: We assign to the nonlocal problem a pseudodifferential operator with the same index, acting in sections of an infinite-dimensional vector bundle on a compact manifold. We then determine the index in terms of topological invariants of the symbol, using the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
In this article, we develop a new index theory for noncompact manifolds endowed with an admissible exhaustion by compact sets. This index theory allows us to provide examples of noncompact manifolds with exotic positive scalar curvature phenomena.
We give a cohomological formula for the index of a fully elliptic pseudodifferential operator on a manifold with boundary. As in the classic case of Atiyah-Singer, we use an embedding into an euclidean space to express the index as the integral of a cohomology class depending in this case on a noncommutative symbol, the integral being over a $C^\infty$-manifold called the singular normal bundle associated to the embedding. The formula is based on a K-theoretical Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem for manifolds with boundary that is drawn from Connes' tangent groupoid approach.
We compute the $K$-theory of comparison $C^*$-algebra associated to a manifold with corners. These comparison algebras are an example of the abstract pseudodifferential algebras introduced by Connes and Moscovici \cite{M3}. Our calculation is obtained by showing that the comparison algebras are a homomorphic image of a groupoid $C^*$-algebra. We then prove an index theorem with values in the $K$-theory groups of the comparison algebra.
We consider Toeplitz operators defined on a concave corner-shaped subset of the square lattice. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for these operators to be Fredholm. We further construct a Fredholm concave corner Toeplitz operator of index one. By using this, a relation between Fredholm indices of quarter-plane and concave corner Toeplitz operators is clarified. As an application, topological invariants and corner states for some bulk-edges gapped Hamiltonians on two-dimensional (2-D) class AIII and 3-D class A systems with concave corners are studied. Explicit examples clarify th…
We prove an analogue for even dimensional manifolds of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer twisted index theorem for trivialized flat bundles. We show that the eta invariant appearing in this result coincides with the eta invariant by Dai and Zhang up to an integer. We also obtain the odd dimensional counterpart for manifolds with boundary of the relative index pairing by Lesch, Moscovici and Pflaum.
We establish a mod 2 index theorem for real vector bundles over 8k+2 dimensional compact pin$^-$ manifolds. The analytic index is the reduced $η$ invariant of (twisted) Dirac operators and the topological index is defined through $KO$-theory. Our main result extends the mod 2 index theorem of Atiyan and Singer to non-orientable manifolds.
In his book (II.5), Connes gives a proof of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for closed manifolds by using deformation groupoids and appropiate actions of these on R^N. Following these ideas, we prove an index theorem for manifolds with boundary.
In this paper, we extend Roe's cyclic $1$-cocycle to relative settings. We also prove two relative index theorems for partitioned manifolds by using its cyclic cocycle, which are generalizations of index theorems on partitioned manifolds. One of these theorems is a variant of [M. Karami-A.H.S. Sadegh-M.E. Zadeh, arXiv:1411.6090, Theorem 3.3].
We formulate and prove a generalization of the Atiyah-Singer family index theorem in the context of the theory of spaces of manifolds à la Madsen, Tillmann, Weiss, Galatius and Randal-Williams. Our results are for Dirac-type operators linear over arbitrary $C^*$-algebras.
Following Gorokhovsky and Lott and using an extension of the b-pseudodifferential calculus of Melrose, we give a formula for the Chern character of the Dirac index class of a longitudinal Dirac type operators on a foliated manifold with boundary. For this purpose we use the Bismut local index formula in the context of non commutative geometry. This paper uses heavily the methods and technical results developed by E.Leichtnam and P.Piazza.
We give an index formula for a class of Dirac operators coupled with unbounded potentials. More precisely, we study operators of the form P := D+ V, where D is a Dirac operators and V is an unbounded potential at infinity on a possibly non-compact manifold M_0. We assume that M_0 is a Lie manifold with compactification denoted M. Examples of Lie manifolds are provided by asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic spaces. The potential V is required to be invertible outside a compact set K and V^{-1} extends to a smooth function on M\K that vanishes on all faces of M in a controlled …
The formality theorem for Hochschild chains of the algebra of functions on a smooth manifold gives us a version of the trace density map from the zeroth Hochschild homology of a deformation quantization algebra to the zeroth Poisson homology. We propose a version of the algebraic index theorem for a Poisson manifold which is based on this trace density map.
We study the index of the APS boundary value problem for a strongly Callias-type operator D on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. We show that this index is equal to an index on a simpler manifold whose boundary is a disjoint union of two complete manifolds $N_0$ and $N_1$. If the dimension of $M$ is odd we show that the latter index depends only on the restrictions $A_0$ and $A_1$ of $D$ to $N_0$ and $N_1$ and thus is an invariant of the boundary. We use this invariant to define the relative eta-invariant $η(A_1,A_0)$. We show that even though in our situation the eta-invariants of $A_1$ and…
The Atiyah-Singer index theorem gives a topological formula for the index of an elliptic differential operator. Enlightening from Alain Connes' tangent groupoid proof of the index theorem and van Erp's research for the Heisenberg index theory on contact manifolds, we give an explicit construction of a series of maps, whose induced map in K-theory is the Heisenberg Atiyah-Singer index map on contact manifolds. Our methods derive from Higson's construction for symbol class in K-theory.
