Let $f$ be a polynomial of degree $d>6$, with integer coefficients. Then the paucity of non-trivial positive integer solutions to the equation $f(a)+f(b)=f(c)+f(d)$ is established. The corresponding situation for equal sums of three like polynomials is also investigated.
We show that deciding the equality of two Dedekind sums $S(c,b)$, $S(d,b)$ is equivalent to deciding whether a Dedekind sum defined by $b, c, d$ takes a certain value. By means of this result we construct infinite sequences of pairwise equal Dedekind sums. Moreover, we prove a result that says how many Dedekind sums $S(d,b)$, $1\le d\le b-1$, may be equal to a given $S(c,b)$ if $b$ is a square-free number.
In this paper, we study the polynomial Gauss sums over finite fields, and present an analogue of Davenport-Hasse's theorem for the entire polynomial Gauss sums, which is a generalization of the previous result obtained by Hayes.
A new polynomial sieve is presented and used to show that almost all integers have at most one representation as a sum of two values of a given polynomial of degree at least 3.
We study sums of Dirichlet characters over polynomials in $\mathbb{F}_q[t]$ with a prescribed number of irreducible factors. Our main results are explicit formulae for these sums in terms of zeros of Dirichlet L-functions. We also exhibit new phenomena concerning Chebyshev-type biases of such sums when the number of irreducible factors is very large.
We prove two results on Kloosterman sums over finite fields, using Stickelberger's theorem and the Gross-Koblitz formula. The first result concerns the minimal polynomial over Q of a Kloosterman sum, and the second result gives a characterisation of ternary Kloosterman sums modulo 27.
Dedekind sums $s(m,n)$ occur in many fields of mathematics. Since $s(m_1,n)=s(m_2,n)$ if $m_1\equiv m_2$ mod $n$, it is natural to ask which of the Dedekind sums $s(m,n)$, $0\le m<n$, take equal values. So far no simple criterion is known by which the equality of $s(m_1,n)$ and $s(m_2,n)$ could be decided. In this note we show how to obtain non-obvious examples of equal Dedekind sums. We consider two cases which mark the extreme possibilities for the argument $n$, namely, $n$ a prime power and $n$ square-free. Whereas we can give a partial overview of equal Dedekind sums in the prime power cas…
it is the purpose of this paper to construct a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to contain a p-adic q-analogue of higher order Dedekind type sums related to q-Euler polynomials and numbers.
In this paper we investigate some interesting of the (h,q)-extension of Euler numbers and polynomials. Finally, we will give some relations between these numbers anf polynomials
In a previous it was shown that the Dedkind sums $12s(m,n)$ and $12s(x,n)$, $1\le m,x\le n$, $(m,n)=(x,n)=1$, are equal mod $\Z$ if, and only if, $(x-m)(xm-1)\equiv 0$ mod $n$. Here we determine the cardinality of numbers $x$ in the above range that satisfy this congruence for a given number $m$.
We investigate the polynomials $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} c_n(k)x^k$ and $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1} |c_n(k)| x^k$, where $c_n(k)$ denote the Ramanujan sums. We point out connections and analogies to the cyclotomic polynomials.
The polynomial Ramanujan sum was first introduced by Carlitz [7], and a generalized version by Cohen [10]. In this paper, we study the arithmetical and analytic properties of these sums, derive various fundamental identities, such as H older formula, reciprocity formula, orthogonality relation and Davenport{Hasse type formula. In particular, we show that the special Dirichlet series involving the polynomial Ramanujan sums are, indeed, the entire functions on the whole complex plane, we also give a square mean values estimation. The main results of this paper are new appearance to us, which ind…
Given an absolutely irreducible ternary form $F$, the purpose of this paper is to produce better upper bounds for the number of integer solutions to the equation F=0, that are restricted to lie in very lopsided boxes. As an application of the main result, a new paucity estimate is obtained for equal sums of two like powers.
In this paper, we discuss sums of powers of the positive integers and compute both the exponential and ordinary generating functions for these sums. We express these generating functions in terms of exponential and geometric polynomials and also show their connection to other interesting series. In particular, we show their connection to an interesting problem of Ovidiu Furdui.
Dedekind symbols are generalizations of the classical Dedekind sums (symbols). There is a natural isomorphism between the space of Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws and the space of modular forms. We will define a new elliptic analogue of the Apostol-Dedekind sums. Then we will show that the newly defined sums generate all odd Dedekind symbols with Laurent polynomial reciprocity laws. Our construction is based on Machide's result on his elliptic Dedekind-Rademacher sums. As an application of our results, we discover Eisenstein series identities which generalize certain …
We introduce the inversion polynomial for Dedekind sums $f_b(x)=\sum x^{\operatorname{inv}(a,b)}$ to study the number of $s(a,b)$ which have the same value for given $b$. We prove several properties of this polynomial and present some conjectures. We also introduce connections between Kloosterman sums and the inversion polynomial evaluated at particular roots of unity. Finally, we improve on previously known bounds for the second highest value of the Dedekind sum and provide a conjecture for a possible generalization. Lastly, we include a new restriction on equal Dedekind sums based on the rec…
We obtain new bounds of exponential sums modulo a prime $p$ with sparse polynomials $a_0x^{n_0} + \cdots + a_νx^{n_ν}$. The bounds depend on various greatest common divisors of exponents $n_0, \ldots, n_ν$ and their differences. In particular, two new bounds for binomials are obtained, improving previous results in broad ranges of parameters.
We adapt ideas of Phong, Stein and Sturm and ideas of Ikromov and Müller from the continuous setting to various discrete settings, obtaining sharp bounds for exponential sums and the number of solutions to polynomial congruences for general quasi-homogeneous polynomials in two variables. This extends work of Denef and Sperber and also Cluckers regarding a conjecture of Igusa in the two dimensional setting by no longer requiring the polynomial to be nondegenerate with respect to its Newton diagram.
Let n,k be the positive integers, and let S_{k}(n) be the sums of the k-th power of positive integers up to n. By means of that we consider the evaluation of the sum of more general series by Bernstein polynomials. Additionally we show the reality of our idea with some examples.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ be sets of polynomials of degree $n$ over a finite field. We show, that if $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ are large enough, then $A+B$ has an irreducible divisor of large degree for some $A\in\mathcal{A}$ and $B\in \mathcal{B}$.
In the present paper, our goal is to introduce a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to inside a p-adic q-analogue of the higher order dedekind-type sums with weight alpha related to Extended q-Euler polynomials by using p-adic q-integral in the p-adic integer ring.
In this paper, we will give two proofs of the Cluckers-Veys conjecture on exponential sums for the case of polynomials in $\mathbb{Z}[x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}]$ having log-canonical thresholds at most one half. In particular, these results imply Igusa's conjecture and Denef-Sperber's conjecture under the same restriction on the log-canonical threshold.
We prove a recent conjecture due to Cluckers and Veys on exponential sums modulo $p^m$ for $m \geq 2$ in the special case where the phase polynomial $f$ is sufficiently non-degenerate with respect to its Newton polyhedron at the origin. Our main auxiliary result is an improved bound on certain related exponential sums over finite fields. This bound can also be used to settle a conjecture of Denef and Hoornaert on the candidate-leading Taylor coefficient of Igusa's local zeta function associated to a non-degenerate polynomial, at its largest non-trivial real candidate pole.
We give nontrivial bounds for the bilinear sums $$ \sum_{u = 1}^{U} \sum_{v=1}^V α_u β_v \mathbf{\,e}_p(u/f(v)) $$ where $\mathbf{\,e}_p(z)$ is a nontrivial additive character of the prime finite field ${\mathbb F}_p$ of $p$ elements, with integers $U$, $V$, a polynomial $f\in {\mathbb F}_p[X] $ and some complex weights $\{α_u\}$, $\{β_v\}$. In particular, for $f(X)=aX+b$ we obtain new bounds of bilinear sums with Kloosterman fractions. We also obtain new bounds for similar sums with multiplicative characters of ${\mathbb F}_p$.
We prove a duality formula for certain sums of values of poly-Bernoulli polynomials which generalizes dualities for poly-Bernoulli numbers. We first compute two types of generating functions for these sums, from which the duality formula is apparent. Secondly we give an analytic proof of the duality from the viewpoint of our previous study of zeta-functions of Arakawa-Kaneko type. As an application, we give a formula that relates poly-Bernoulli numbers to the Genocchi numbers.
Hooley proved that if $f\in \Bbb Z [X]$ is irreducible of degree $\ge 2$, then the fractions $\{ r/n\}$, $0<r<n$ with $f(r)\equiv 0\pmod n$, are uniformly distributed in $(0,1)$. In this paper we study such problems for reducible polynomials of degree $2$ and $3$ and for finite products of linear factors. In particular, we establish asymptotic formulas for exponential sums over these normalized roots.
In [3] it was shown that the Dedekond sums $s(m_1,n)$ and $s(m_2,n)$ are equal only if $(m_1m_2-1)(m_1-m_2)\equiv 0$ mod $n$. Here we show that the latter condition is equivalent to $12s(m_1,n)-12s(m_2,n)\in \Z$. In addition, we determine, for a given number $m_1$, the number of integers $m_2$ in the range $0\le m_2<n$, $(m_1,m_2)=1$, such that $12s(m_1,n)-12s(m_2,n)\in \Z$, provided that $n$ is square-free.
Given a natural number $n \geq 2$, an integer $k$ and for a judiciously chosen $l = l(n)$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the polynomial $f_{n,k} = \big( \sum_{i=1}^{l} x_{i}^{n} \big) - k$ to have roots modulo every positive integer.
In this paper, we focus on computing the higher slope Hasse polynomials of L-functions of certain exponential sums associated to the following family of Laurent polynomials $f(x_1,\ldots ,x_{n+1})=\sum_{i=1}^na_i x_{n+1}\left(x_i+\frac{1}{x_i}\right)+a_{n+1} x_{n+1}+\frac{1}{x_{n+1}}$, where $a_i \in \F^*_{q}$, $i=1,2, \ldots, n+1$. We find a simple formula for the Hasse polynomial of the slope one side and study the irreducibility of these Hasse polynomials. We will also provide a simple form of all the higher slope Hasse polynomials for $n=3$, answering an open question of Zhang and Feng.
We give a simple proof for the reciprocity formulas of character Dedekind sums associated with two primitive characters, whose modulus need not to be same, by utilizing the character analogue of the Euler-MacLaurin summation formula. Moreover, we extend known results on the integral of products of Bernoulli polynomials by considering the integral \[ \int\limits_{0}^{x}B_{n_{1}}(b_{1}z+y_{1})... B_{n_{r}}(b_{r}z+y_{r}) dz, \] where $b_{l}$ $(b_{l}\neq 0)$ and $y_{l}$ $(1\leq l\leq r)$ are real numbers. As a consequence of this integral we establish a connection between the reciprocity relations…
In the present paper, our objective is to treat a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to inside a p-adic q-analogue of the higher order Dedekind-type sums with weight in connection with modified q-Genocchi polynomials with weight alpha by using p-adic invariant q-integral on Zp.
A natural question about Dedekind sums is to find conditions on the integers $a_1, a_2$, and $b$ such that $s(a_1,b) = s(a_2, b)$. We prove that if the former equality holds then $ b \ | \ (a_1a_2-1)(a_1-a_2)$. Surprisingly, to the best of our knowledge such statements have not appeared in the literature. A similar theorem is proved for the more general Dedekind-Rademacher sums as well, namely that for any fixed non-negative integer $n$, a positive integer modulus $b$, and two integers $a_1$ and $a_2$ that are relatively prime to $b$, the hypothesis $r_n (a_1,b)= r_n (a_2,b)$ implies that $b \…
The origin of this study is based on not only explicit formulas of finite sums involving higher powers of binomial coefficients, but also explicit evaluations of generating functions for this sums. It should be emphasized that this study contains both new results and literature surveys about some of the related results that have existed so far. With the aid of hypergeometric function, generating functions for a new family of the combinatorial numbers, related to finite sums of powers of binomial coefficients, are constructed. By using these generating functions, a number of new identities have…
In this paper, we consider a general form of the analogue of Ramanujan's sum in the ring of polynomials over a finite field. We first prove some multiplicative properties of such functions before considering their finite Fourier series and some specific examples. In the end, we also prove a result about the Dirichlet series of such functions.
We obtain nontrivial estimates of quadratic character sums of division polynomials $Ψ_n(P)$, $n=1,2, ...$, evaluated at a given point $P$ on an elliptic curve over a finite field of $q$ elements. Our bounds are nontrivial if the order of $P$ is at least $q^{1/2 + ε}$ for some fixed $ε> 0$. This work is motivated by an open question about statistical indistinguishability of some cryptographically relevant sequences which has recently been brought up by K. Lauter and the second author.
Let $c_1(x),c_2(x),f_1(x),f_2(x)$ be polynomials with rational coefficients. With obvious exceptions, there can be at most finitely many roots of unity among the zeros of the polynomials $c_1(x)f_1(x)^n+c_2(x)f_2(x)^n$ with $n=1,2\ldots$. We estimate the orders of these roots of unity in terms of the degrees and the heights of the polynomials $c_i$ and $f_i$.
In this paper we construct $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials. By using these numbers and polynomials, we investigate the $q$-analogue of alternating sums of powers of consecutive integers due to Euler.
We study Laurent polynomials in any number of variables that are sums of at most $k$ monomials. We first show that the Mahler measure of such a polynomial is at least $h/2^{k-2}$, where $h$ is the height of the polynomial. Next, restricting to such polynomials having integer coefficients, we show that the set of logarithmic Mahler measures of the elements of this restricted set is a closed subset of the nonnegative real line, with $0$ being an isolated point of the set. In the final section, we discuss the extent to which such an integer polynomial of Mahler measure $1$ is determined by its $k…
Given an odd integer polynomial f(x) of a degree k >=3, we construct a non-negative valued, normed trigonometric polynomial with the spectrum in the set of integer values of f(x) not greater than n, and a small free coefficient a_{0}=O((\log n)^{-1/k}). This gives an alternative proof for the maximal possible cardinality of a set A, so that A-A does not contain an element of f(x). We also discuss other interpretations and an ergodic characterization of that bound.
The sum formulas for multiple zeta(-star) values and symmetric multiple zeta(-star) values bear a striking resemblance. We explain the resemblance in a rather straightforward manner using an identity that involves the Schur multiple zeta values. We also obtain the sum formula for polynomial multiple zeta(-star) values in terms of generating functions, simultaneously generalizing the sum formulas for multiple zeta(-star) values and symmetric multiple zeta(-star) values.
We study averages over squarefree moduli of the size of exponential sums with polynomial phases. We prove upper bounds on various moments of such sums, and obtain evidence of un-correlation of exponential sums associated to different suitably unrelated and generic polynomials. The proofs combine analytic arguments with the algebraic interpretation of exponential sums and their monodromy groups.
In this paper we establish the function field analogue of Bateman-Horn conjecture in short interval in the limit of a large finite field. Hence we start with counting prime polynomials generated by primitive quadratic functions in short intervals. To this end we further work out on function field analogs of cancellation of Mobius sums and its correlations(Chowla type sums) and confirm that square root cancellation in Mobius sums is equivalent to square root cancellation in Chowla type sums.
In this paper we construct a new q-Euler numbers and polynomials. By using these numbers and polynomials, we give the interesting formulae related to alternating sums of powers of consecutive q-integers following an idea due to Euler.
Generic Newton polygons for L-functions of exponential sums associated to Laurent polynomials in one variable are determined. The corresponding Hasse polynomials are also determined.
For finite sums of non-negative powers of arithmetic progressions the generating functions (ordinary and exponential ones) for given powers are computed. This leads to a two parameter generalization of Stirling and Eulerian numbers. A direct generalization of Bernoulli numbers and their polynomials follows. On the way to find the Faulhaber formula for these sums of powers in terms of generalized Bernoulli polynomials one is led to a one parameter generalization of Bernoulli numbers and their polynomials. Generalized Lah numbers are also considered.
