Given a natural number $n \geq 2$, an integer $k$ and for a judiciously chosen $l = l(n)$ we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the polynomial $f_{n,k} = \big( \sum_{i=1}^{l} x_{i}^{n} \big) - k$ to have roots modulo every positive integer.
In this short note, we closely follow the approach of Green and Tao to extend the best known bound for recurrence modulo 1 from squares to the largest possible class of polynomials. The paper concludes with a brief discussion of a consequence of this result for polynomials structures in sumsets and limitations of the method.
We describe general connections between intersective properties of sets in Abelian groups and positive exponential sums. In particular, given a set $A$ the maximal size of a set whose difference set avoids $A$ will be related to positive exponential sums using frequencies from $A$.
We show that if $h\in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ is a polynomial of degree $k \geq 2$ such that $h(\mathbb{N})$ contains a multiple of $q$ for every $q\in \mathbb{N}$, known as an $\textit{intersective polynomial}$, then any subset of $\{1,2,\dots,N\}$ with no nonzero differences of the form $h(n)$ for $n\in\mathbb{N}$ has density at most a constant depending on $h$ and $c$ times $(\log N)^{-c\log\log\log\log N}$, for any $c<(\log((k^2+k)/2))^{-1}$. Bounds of this type were previously known only for monomials and intersective quadratics, and this is currently the best-known bound for the original Furstenb…
Two classes of finite trigonometric sums, each involving only $\sin$'s, are evaluated in closed form. The previous and original proofs arise from Ramanujan's theta functions and modular equations.
In the present paper, our objective is to treat a p-adic continuous function for an odd prime to inside a p-adic q-analogue of the higher order Dedekind-type sums with weight in connection with modified q-Genocchi polynomials with weight alpha by using p-adic invariant q-integral on Zp.
Higher-dimensional Dedekind sums are defined as a generalization of a recent 1-dimensional probability model of Dilcher and Girstmair to a d-dimensional cube. The analysis of the frequency distribution of marked lattice points leads to new formulae in certain special cases, and to new bounds for the classical Dedekind sums. Upper bounds for the generalized Dedekind sums are defined in terms of 1-dimensional moments. In the classical two-dimensional case, the ratio of these sums to their upper bounds are cosines of angles between certain vectors of n-dimensional cones, conjectured to have a lar…
For primitive non-trivial Dirichlet characters $χ_1$ and $χ_2$, we study the weight zero newform Eisenstein series $E_{χ_1,χ_2}(z,s)$ at $s=1$. The holomorphic part of this function has a transformation rule that we express in finite terms as a generalized Dedekind sum. This gives rise to the explicit construction (in finite terms) of elements of $H^1(Γ_0(N), \mathbb{C})$. We also give a short proof of the reciprocity formula for this Dedekind sum.
Using only elementary arguments, Cassels solved the Diophantine equation $(x-1)^3+x^3+(x+1)^3=z^2$ in integers $x$, $z$. The generalization $(x-1)^k+x^k+(x+1)^k=z^n$ (with $x$, $z$, $n$ integers and $n \ge 2$) was considered by Zhongfeng Zhang who solved it for $k=2$, $3$, $4$ using Frey-Hellegouarch curves and their Galois representations. In this paper, by employing some sophisticated refinements of this approach, we show that the only solution for $k=5$ is $x=z=0$, and that there are no solutions for $k=6$. The chief innovation we employ is a computational one, which enables us to avoid the…
The aim of this paper is to construct generating functions for some families of special finite sums with the aid of the Newton-Mercator series, hypergeometric series, and $p$-adic integral (the Volkenborn integral). By using these generating functions, their functional equations, and their partial derivative equations, many novel computational formulas involving the special finite sums of (inverse) binomial coefficients, the Bernoulli type polynomials and numbers, Euler polynomials and numbers, the Stirling numbers, the (alternating) harmonic numbers, the Leibnitz polynomials and others. Among…
In this paper, we derive eight basic identities of symmetry in three variables related to Bernoulli polynomials and power sums. These and most of their corollaries are new, since there have been results only about identities of symmetry in two variables. These abundance of symmetries shed new light even on the existing identities so as to yield some further interesting ones. The derivations of identities are based on the $p$-adic integral expression of the generating function for the Bernoulli polynomials and the quotient of integrals that can be expressed as the exponential generating functio…

We study the surface arising from the diophantine equation $m^3+(m+1)^3+...+(m+k-1)^3=l^2$. It turns out that this is a $K3$ surface with Picard number 20. We stduy its aritmetic properties in detail. We construct elliptic fibrations on it, and we find a parametric solution to the original equation. Also, we determine the Hasse-Weil zeta function of the surface over $Q$.
In this paper we consider non-linear differential equations which are closely related to the generating functions of Frobenius-Euler polynomials. From our non-linear differential equations, we derive some new identities between the sums of products of Frobenius-Euler polynomials and Frobenius-Euler polynomials of higher order.

We study quadratic residue difference sets, GMW difference sets, and difference sets arising from monomial hyperovals, all of which are $(2^d-1, 2^{d-1}-1, 2^{d-2}-1)$ cyclic difference sets in the multiplicative group of the finite field $F_{2^d}$ of $2^d$ elements, with $d \geq 2$. We show that, except for a few cases with small $d$, these difference sets are all pairwise inequivalent. This is accomplished in part by examining their 2-ranks. The 2-ranks of all of these difference sets were previously known, except for those connected with the Segre and Glynn hyperovals. We determine the 2-ra…
Using Pascal triangle, we give a simple generalization to the so-called STRAND Puzzle solved by Srinivasa Ramanujan. Thus we are interested in computing the median, first and third quartiles of some integer valued distributions, arising naturally when extending partial sums of the arithmetic progression (triangular numbers) to tetrahedral numbers and beyond. We show this reduces to equations of Pell-Fermat type of higher order, which admit very few integer solutions, but for which, following Ramanujan's original idea, we can always find integer sequences of best approximation, in the Diophanti…
