Templates are branched 2-manifolds with semi-flows used to model `chaotic' hyperbolic invariant sets of flows on 3-manifolds. Knotted orbits on a template correspond to those in the original flow. Birman and Williams conjectured that for any given template the number of prime factors of the knots realized would be bounded. We prove a special case when the template is positive; the general case is now known to be false.
Kirby and Lickorish showed that every knot in the 3-sphere is concordant to a prime knot, equivalently, every concordance class contains a prime knot. We prove here that their result can be strengthened: Every knot in the 3-sphere is invertibly concordant to a prime knot. A consequence is that every double concordance class contains a prime knot.
A partial order on the set of prime knots can be defined by the existence of an epimorphism between knot groups. We prove that all the prime knots with up to $6$ crossings are minimal. We also show that each fibered knot with the irreducible Alexander polynomial is minimal.
We compute the smooth 4-genera of the prime knots with 12 crossings whose values, as reported on the KnotInfo website, were unknown. This completes the calculation of the smooth 4-genus for all prime knots with 12 or fewer crossings.
We give the bridge indices for 11-crossing prime knots and give a minimal bridge projection for each of these knots. The results on the indices may be easily summarized: all of these knots that are not rational knots or Montesinos knots have bridge index three.
We prove that a prime knot K is not determined by its p-fold cyclic branched cover for at most two odd primes p. Moreover, we show that for a given odd prime p, the p-fold cyclic branched cover of a prime knot K is the p-fold cyclic branched cover of at most one more knot K' non equivalent to K. To prove the main theorem, a result concerning the symmetries of knots is also obtained. This latter result can be interpreted as a characterisation of the trivial knot.
We construct prime amphicheiral knots that have free period 2. This settles an open question raised by the second named author, who proved that amphicheiral hyperbolic knots cannot admit free periods and that prime amphicheiral knots cannot admit free periods of order >2.
As a continuation of the previous works to tabulate the prime knots up to arc index 11, we provide the list of prime knots with arc index 12 up to 16 crossings and their minimal grid diagrams. There are 19,513 prime knots of arc index 12 up to 16 crossings.
The concepts of tile number and space-efficiency for knot mosaics were first explored by Heap and Knowles (arXiv:1702.06462), where they determined the possible tile numbers and space-efficient layouts for every prime knot with mosaic number 6 or less. In this paper, we extend those results to prime knots with mosaic number 7.
As a supplement to the authors' article "Prime knots with arc index up to 11 and an upper bound of arc index for non-alternating knots", to appear in the Journal of Knot Theory and its Ramifications, we present minimal arc presentations of the prime knots up to arc index 11.
Every knot can be embedded in the union of finitely many half planes with a common boundary line in such a way that the portion of the knot in each half plane is a properly embedded arc. The minimal number of such half planes is called the arc index of the knot. We have identified all prime knots with arc index up to 11. We also proved that the crossing number is an upperbound of arc index for non-alternating knots. As a result the arc index is determined for prime knots up to twelve crossings.
The warping degree of an oriented knot diagram is the minimal number of crossing changes which are required to obtain a monotone knot diagram from the diagram. The minimal warping degree of a knot is the minimal value of the warping degree for all oriented minimal diagrams of the knot. In this paper, all prime alternating knots with minimal warping degree two are determined.
Early last century witnessed both the complete classification of 2-dimensional manifolds and a proof that classification of 4-dimensional manifolds is undecidable, setting up 3-dimensional manifolds as a central battleground of topology to this day. A rather important subset of the 3-manifolds has turned out to be the knotspaces, the manifolds left when a thin tube around a knot in 3D space is excised. Given a knot diagram it would be desirable to provide as compact a description of its knotspace as feasible; hitherto this has been done by computationally tessellating the knotspace of a given …
Using computational techniques we tabulate prime knots up to five crossings in the solid torus and the infinite family of lens spaces $L(p,q)$. For these knots we calculate the second and third skein module and establish which prime knots in the solid torus are amphichiral. Most knots are distinguished by the skein modules. For the handful of cases where the skein modules fail to detect inequivalent knots, we calculate and compare the hyperbolic structures of the knot complements. We were unable to resolve a handful of 5-crossing cases for $p\geq 13$.
It is known that the first two-variable Links--Gould quantum link invariant $LG\equiv LG^{2,1}$ is more powerful than the HOMFLYPT and Kauffman polynomials, in that it distinguishes all prime knots (including reflections) of up to 10 crossings. Here we report investigations which greatly expand the set of evaluations of $LG$ for prime knots. Through them, we show that the invariant is complete, modulo mutation, for all prime knots (including reflections) of up to 11 crossings, but fails to distinguish some nonmutant pairs of 12-crossing prime knots. As a byproduct, we classify the mutants with…
We show the existence of infinitely many prime knots each of which having in their complements meridional essential surfaces with two boundary components and arbitrarily high genus.
We show that all twist knots, certain double twist knots and some other 2-bridge knots are minimal elements for the partial ordering on the set of prime knots. The key to these results are presentations of their character varieties using Chebyshev polynomials and a criterion for irreducibility of a polynomial of two variables. These give us an elementary method to discuss the number of irreducible components of the character varieties, which concludes the result essentially.
Prime knots of genus one admitting diagram with at most five classical crossings were classified by Akimova and Matveev in 2014. In 2018 Kaur, Prabhakar and Vesnin introduced families of L-polynomials and F-polynomials for virtual knots which are generalizations of affine index polynomial. Here we introduce a notion of totally flat-trivial knots and demonstrate that for such knots F-polynomials and L-polynomials coincide with affine index polynomial. We prove that all Akimova - Matveev knots are totally flat-trivial and calculate their affine index polynomials.
It is known that the arc index of alternating knots is the minimal crossing number plus two and the arc index of prime nonalternating knots is less than or equal to the minimal crossing number. We study some cases when the arc index is strictly less than the minimal crossing number. We also give minimal grid diagrams of some prime nonalternating knots with 13 crossings and 14 crossings whose arc index is the minimal crossing number minus one.
We study 2-string free tangle decompositions of knots with tunnel number two. As an application, we construct infinitely many counter-examples to a conjecture in the literature stating that the tunnel number of the connected sum of prime knots doesn't degenerate by more than one.
In this article, we give a list of minimal grid diagrams of the 12 crossing prime alternating knots. This is a continuation of the work in https://doi.org/10.1142/S0218216520500765
This paper provides the complete table of prime knot projections with their mirror images, without redundancy, up to eight double points systematically thorough a finite procedure by flypes. In this paper, we show how to tabulate the knot projections up to eight double points by listing tangles with at most four double points by an approach with respect to rational tangles of J. H. Conway. In other words, for a given prime knot projection of an alternating knot, we show how to enumerate possible projections of the alternating knot. Also to tabulate knot projections up to ambient isotopy, we in…
In 2008, Kauffman and Lomonaco introduce the concepts of a knot mosaic and the mosaic number of a knot or link, the smallest integer $n$ such that a knot or link can be represented on an $n$-mosaic. In arXiv:1702.06462, the authors explore space-efficient knot mosaics and the tile number of a knot or link, the smallest number of non-blank tiles necessary to depict the knot or link on a mosaic. They determine bounds for the tile number in terms of the mosaic number. In this paper, we focus specifically on prime knots with mosaic number 6. We determine a complete list of these knots, provide a m…
Let $K$ be a prime knot in $S^3$ and $G(K)=π_1(S^3-K)$ the knot group. We write $K_1 \geq K_2$ if there exists a surjective homomorphism from $G(K_1)$ onto $G(K_2)$. In this paper, we determine this partial order on the set of prime knots with up to 11 crossings. There exist such 801 prime knots and then $640,800$ should be considered. The existence of a surjective homomorphism can be proved by constructing it explicitly. On the other hand, the non-existence of a surjective homomorphism can be proved by the Alexander polynomial and the twisted Alexander polynomial. This work is an extension of…
We revisit the issue of the existence of infinitely many distinct prime knots with the same Alexander invariant. We present infinitely many distinct families, each family made up of infinitely many distinct knots. Within each family, the Alexander invariant is the same. Unlike other examples in the literature, ours are elementary and based on a sub-collection of pretzel knots with three tassels.
For a knot $K$, the doubly slice genus $g_{ds}(K)$ is the minimal $g$ such that $K$ divides a closed, orientable, and unknotted surface of genus $g$ embedded in $S^4$. In this paper, we identify the doubly slice genera of 2909 of the 2977 prime knots which have a crossing number of 12 or fewer.
Let $Σ_0,Σ_1$ be closed oriented surfaces. Two oriented knots $K_0 \subset Σ_0 \times [0,1]$ and $K_1 \subset Σ_1 \times [0,1]$ are said to be (virtually) concordant if there is a compact oriented $3$-manifold $W$ and a smoothly and properly embedded annulus $A$ in $W \times [0,1]$ such that $\partial W=Σ_1 \sqcup -Σ_0$ and $\partial A=K_1 \sqcup -K_0$. This notion of concordance, due to Turaev, is equivalent to concordance of virtual knots, due to Kauffman. A prime virtual knot, in the sense of Matveev, is one for which no thickened surface representative $K \subset Σ\times [0,1]$ admits a no…
It is well-known that the monoid of long virtual knots is not commutative. This contrasts with the case of classical long knots, where $A \# B \leftrightharpoons B \# A$ for all $A,B$. In the present paper, we present a new proof that two inequivalent non-classical prime long virtual knots never commute. The original result is due to Manturov. The techniques used here are mostly geometric. First, a slightly strengthened version of Kuperberg's theorem is established. We then show that a well-defined concatenation of two long knots in a thickened surface is preserved by stabilization when both l…
This paper gives new upper bounds on the stick numbers of the knots $9_{18}$, $10_{18}$, $10_{58}$, $10_{66}$, $10_{68}$, $10_{80}$, $10_{82}$, $10_{84}$, $10_{93}$, $10_{100}$, and $10_{152}$, as well as on the equilateral stick number of $10_{79}$. These bounds imply that the knots $10_{58}$, $10_{66}$, and $10_{80}$ have superbridge index $\leq 5$, completing the project of showing that no prime knots through 10 crossings can have superbridge index larger than 5. The current best bounds on stick number and superbridge index for prime knots through 10 crossings are given in Appendix A.
This is the first in a series of four papers wherein we enumerate all prime alternating knots and links. In this first paper, we introduce four operators on knots and show that, when used according to very simple rules on the prime alternating knots of n crossings, the set of all prime alternating knots of n+1 crossings is obtained. The second paper (Part II) explains how to actually implement the operators in an efficient manner, although that is in a sense secondary to introduction of a complete invariant for prime alternating knots, called the master array of a prime alternating knot. The t…
The clasp number $c(K)$ of a knot $K$ is the minimum number of clasp singularities among all clasp disks bounded by $K$. It is known that the genus $g(K)$ and the unknotting number $u(K)$ are lower bounds of the clasp number, that is, $\max\{g(K),u(K)\} \leq c(K)$. Then it is natural to ask whether there exists a knot $K$ such that $\max\{g(K),u(K)\}<c(K)$. In this paper, we prove that there exists an infinite family of prime knots such that the question above is affirmative.
This is an expository article of our work on analogies between knot theory and algebraic number theory. We shall discuss foundational analogies between knots and primes, 3-manifolds and number rings mainly from the group-theoretic point of view.
This is the second of a part series devoted to enumerating prime alternating knots and links. In Part I, we introduced four operators on knots and showed that if these operators are applied to the set of all prime alternating knots of n crossings, the set of all prime alternating knots of n+1 crossings is obtained. In this paper, we explain how to actually implement the operators in an efficient manner. This relies on a complete invariant that we have introduced, called the master array for a prime alternating knot. By December 1, 1999, we had successfully run an early implementation of the al…
We analyse the topological (knot-theoretic) features of a certain codimension-one bifurcation of a partially hyperbolic fixed point in a flow on $\real^3$ originally described by Shil'nikov. By modifying how the invariant manifolds wrap around themselves, or ``pleat,'' we may apply the theory of templates, or branched two-manifolds, to capture the topology of the flow. This analysis yields a class of flows which bifurcate from a Morse-Smale flow to a Smale flow containing periodic orbits of all knot and link types.
We define homotopy-theoretic invariants of knots in prime 3-manifolds. Fix a knot J in a prime 3-manifold M. Call a knot K in M concordant to J if it cobounds a properly embedded annulus with J in MxI, and call K J-characteristic if there is a degree-one map f:M --> M throwing K onto J and mapping M-K to M-J. These invariants are invariants of concordance and of J-characteristicness when f induces the identity on the fundamental group of M, and may be viewed as extensions of Milnor's invariants. We do not require the knots considered here to be rationally null-homologous or framed.
Any knot group is the image of the group of a prime knot by a homomorphism that preserves peripheral structure. In fact, there are infinitely many such prime knots. A related partial order on knots is defined, and its properties are discussed.
For every odd integer $c\ge 21$, we raise an example of a prime component-preservingly amphicheiral link with the minimal crossing number $c$. The link has two components, and consists of an unknot and a knot which is $(-)$-amphicheiral with odd minimal crossing number. We call the latter knot a {\it Stoimenow knot}. We also show that the Stoimenow knot is not invertible by the Alexander polynomials.
We give a survey of some recent papers by the authors and Masaaki Wada relating the twisted Alexander polynomial with a partial order on the set of prime knots. We also give examples and pose open problems.
We show that there are prime knots so that the Steenrod operations of Lipshitz and Sarkar arXiv:1204.5776 are non trivial on their Khovanov homology. This answers a question posed by Lipshitz and Sarkar in their paper arXiv:1709.03602. We then go on to show that there are hyperbolic and satellite knots so that the Steenrod operations are non trivial on their Khovanov homology.
We present an enhanced prime decomposition theorem for knots that gives the isotopy classes of composite knots that can be constructed from a given list of prime factors (allowing for the mirroring and orientation reversing for each factor). Underlying the theorem is an algebraic construction that also allows for the computation of the intrinsic symmetries (invertibility, chirality, etc.) of a composite knot from those of the prime factors. We then use this construction to give a table of composite knots through 12 crossings that can be constructed from prime factors through 9 crossings. This …
Let K be a an alternating prime knot in the 3-sphere. We investigate the category of flypes between reduced alternating diagrams for K. As a consequence, we show that any odd prime order action on K is isotopic through maps of pairs to a single flype. This implies that for any odd prime order action on K there is either a reduced alternating periodic diagram or a reduced alternating free periodic diagram. Finally, we deduce that the quotient of an odd periodic alternating knot is also alternating.
The m,n Turk's Head Knot, THK(m,n), is an "alternating (m,n) torus knot." We prove the Harary-Kauffman conjecture for all THK(m,n) except for the case where m \geq 5 is odd and n \geq 3 is relatively prime to m. We also give evidence in support of the conjecture in that case. Our proof rests on the observation that none of these knots have prime determinant except for THK(m,2) when P_m is a Pell prime.
We show that the proportion of hyperbolic knots among all of the prime knots of $n$ or fewer crossings does not converge to $1$ as $n$ approaches infinity. Moreover, we show that if $K$ is a nontrivial knot then the proportion of satellites of $K$ among all of the prime knots of $n$ or fewer crossings does not converge to $0$ as $n$ approaches infinity.
In this paper we present a systematic method to generate prime knot and prime link minimal triple-point projections, and then classify all classical prime knots and prime links with triple-crossing number at most four. We also extend the table of known knots and links with triple-crossing number equal to five. By introducing a new type of diagrammatic move, we reduce the number of generating moves on triple-crossing diagrams, and derive a minimal generating set of moves connecting triple-crossing diagrams of the same knot.
A conjecture proposed by J. Tripp in 2002 states that the crossing number of any knot coincides with the canonical genus of its Whitehead double. In the meantime, it has been established that this conjecture is true for a large class of alternating knots including $(2, n)$ torus knots, $2$-bridge knots, algebraic alternating knots, and alternating pretzel knots. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture is not true for any alternating $3$-braid knot which is the connected sum of two torus knots of type $(2, m)$ and $(2, n)$. This results in a new modified conjecture that the crossing number …
The union of singular orbits of an effective locally smooth circle action on the 4-sphere consists of two 2-knots, $K$ and $K^{\prime}$, intersecting at two points transversely. Each of $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ is called a branched twist spin. A twist spun knot is an example of a branched twist spin. The Gluck twists along branched twist spins are studied by Fintushel, Gordon and Pao. In this paper, we determine the 2-knot obtained from $K$ by the Gluck twist along $K^{\prime}$. As an application, we give infinitely many pairs of inequivalent branched twist spins whose complements are homeomorphic…
Flat plumbing basket surfaces of links were introduced to study the geometry of the complement of the links. These flat plumbing basket surface can be presented by a sequential presentation known as flat plumbing basket code first found by Furihata, Hirasawa and Kobayashi. The minimum number of flat plumbings to obtain a flat plumbing basket surfaces of a link is defined to be the flat plumbing basket number of the given link. In present article, we use these sequential presentations to find the complete classification theorem of prime knots whose flat plumbing basket number $6$ or less. As ap…
Let K be a knot in the 3-sphere with 2-fold branched covering space M. If for some prime p congruent to 3 mod 4 the p-torsion in the first homology of M is cyclic with odd exponent, then K is of infinite order in the knot concordance group. As one application, recall that the n-twisted double of an arbitrary knot has order 4 in Levine's algebraic concordance group if and only if n is positive and some prime congruent to 3 mod 4 has odd exponent in 4n+1; we show that all such knots are of infinite order in the knot concordance group. As a second application, the 2-bridge knot K(r,s) has infinit…
The fact that the modular template coincides with the Lorenz template, discovered by Ghys, implies modular knots have very peculiar properties. We obtain a generalization of these results to other Hecke triangle groups. In this context, the geodesic flow can never be seen as a flow on a subset of $S^3$, and one is led to consider embeddings into lens spaces. We will geometrically construct homeomorphisms from the unit tangent bundles of the orbifolds into the lens spaces, elliminating the need for elliptic functions. Finally we will use these homeomorphisms to compute templates for the geodesi…
The concordance genus of a knot is the least genus of any knot in its concordance class. It is bounded above by the genus of the knot, and bounded below by the slice genus, two well-studied invariants. In this paper we consider the concordance genus of 11--crossing prime knots. This analysis resolves the concordance genus of 533 of the 552 prime 11--crossing knots. The appendix to the paper gives concordance diagrams for 59 knots found to be concordant to knots of lower genus, including null-concordances for the 30 11--crossing knots known to be slice.
