We prove that if $M$ is a CW-complex and $*$ is a 0-cell of $M$, then the crossed module $Π_2(M,M^1,*)$ does not depend on the cellular decomposition of $M$ up to free products with $Π_2(D^2,S^1,*)$, where $M^1$ is the 1-skeleton of $M$. From this it follows that if $G$ is a finite crossed module and $M$ is finite, then the number of crossed module morphisms $Π_2(M,M^1,*) \to G$ (which is finite) can be re-scaled to a homotopy invariant $I_G(M)$ (i. e. not dependent on the cellular decomposition of $M$). We describe an algorithm to calculate $π_2(M,M^{(1)},*)$ as a crossed module over $π_1(M^{(1)},*)$, in the case when $M$ is the complement of a knotted surface in $S^4$ and $M^{(1)}$ is the 1-handlebody of a handle decomposition of $M$, which, in particular, gives a method to calculate the algebraic 2-type of $M$. In addition, we prove that the invariant $I_G$ yields a non-trivial invariant of knotted surfaces.
We consider several classes of knotted objects, namely usual, virtual and welded pure braids and string links, and two equivalence relations on those objects, induced by either self-crossing changes or self-virtualizations. We provide a number of results which point out the differences between these various notions. The proofs are mainly based on the techniques of Gauss diagram formulae.
We prove that if $M$ is a CW-complex and $M^1$ is its 1-skeleton then the crossed module $Π_2(M,M^1)$ depends only on the homotopy type of $M$ as a space, up to free products, in the category of crossed modules, with $Π_2(D^2,S^1)$. From this it follows that, if $G$ is a finite crossed module and $M$ is finite, then the number of crossed module morphisms $Π_2(M,M^1) \to G$ can be re-scaled to a homotopy invariant $I_G(M)$, depending only on the homotopy 2-type of $M$. We describe an algorithm for calculating $π_2(M,M^{(1)})$ as a crossed module over $π_1(M^{(1)})$, in the case when $M$ is the …
We consider knotted annuli in 4-space, called 2-string-links, which are knotted surfaces in codimension two that are naturally related, via closure operations, to both 2-links and 2-torus links. We classify 2-string-links up to link-homotopy by means of a 4-dimensional version of Milnor invariants. The key to our proof is that any 2-string link is link-homotopic to a ribbon one; this allows to use the homotopy classification obtained in the ribbon case by P. Bellingeri and the authors. Along the way, we give a Roseman-type result for immersed surfaces in 4-space. We also discuss the case of ri…
This paper is devoted to the classification of embeddings of higher dimensional manifolds. We study the case of embeddings $S^p\times S^q\to S^m$, which we call knotted tori. The set of knotted tori in the the space of sufficiently high dimension, namely in the metastable range $m\ge p+3q/2+2$, $p\le q$, which is a natural limit for the classical methods of embedding theory, has been explicitely described earlier. The aim of this note is to present an approach which allows for results in lower dimension.
Some generalizations and variations of the Fintushel-Stern rim surgery are known to produce smoothly knotted surfaces. We show that if the fundamental groups of their complements are cyclic, then these surfaces are topologically unknotted. Using a twist-spinning construction from high-dimensional knot theory, we construct examples of knotted surfaces whose complements have cyclic fundamental groups.
Ribbon 2-knotted objects are locally flat embeddings of surfaces in 4-space which bound immersed 3-manifolds with only ribbon singularities. They appear as topological realizations of welded knotted objects, which is a natural quotient of virtual knot theory. In this paper we consider ribbon tubes and ribbon torus-links, which are natural analogues of string links and links, respectively. We show how ribbon tubes naturally act on the reduced free group, and how this action classifies ribbon tubes up to link-homotopy, that is when allowing each component to cross itself. At the combinatorial le…
We introduce bridge trisections of knotted surfaces in the four-sphere. This description is inspired by the work of Gay and Kirby on trisections of four-manifolds and extends the classical concept of bridge splittings of links in the three-sphere to four dimensions. We prove that every knotted surface in the four-sphere admits a bridge trisection (a decomposition into three simple pieces) and that any two bridge trisections for a fixed surface are related by a sequence of stabilizations and destabilizations. We also introduce a corresponding diagrammatic representation of knotted surfaces and …
Given a simply-connected closed 4-manifold $X$ and a smoothly embedded oriented surface $Σ$, various constructions based on Fintushel-Stern knot surgery have produced new surfaces in $X$ that are pairwise homeomorphic to $Σ$, but not diffeomorphic. We prove that for all known examples of surface knots constructed from knot surgery operations that preserve the fundamental group of the complement of surface knots, they become pairwise diffeomorphic after stabilizing by connected summing with one $S^2\tilde{\times}S^2$. When $X$ is spin, we show in addition that any surfaces obtained by a knot su…
The Meridional Rank Conjecture asks whether the bridge number of a knot in $S^3$ is equal to the minimal number of meridians needed to generate the fundamental group of its complement. In this paper we investigate the analogous conjecture for knotted surfaces in $S^4$. Towards this end, we give a construction to produce classical knots with quotients sending meridians to elements of any finite order and which detect their meridional ranks. We establish the equality of bridge number and meridional rank for these knots and knotted spheres obtained from them by twist-spinning. On the other hand, …
In this paper we show that there are two symplectic surfaces in the 4-ball which bound the same transverse knot, have the same topology (as abstract surfaces), and are distinguished by the fundamental groups of their complements.
In this paper, we study stable equivalence of exotically knotted surfaces in 4-manifolds, surfaces that are topologically isotopic but not smoothly isotopic. We prove that any pair of embedded surfaces in the same homology class become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing them by handle additions in the ambient 4-manifold, which can moreover assumed to be attached in a standard way (locally and unknottedly) in many favorable situations. In particular, any exotically knotted pair of surfaces with cyclic fundamental group complements become smoothly isotopic after a same number of standard stabil…
We show that fundamental groups of the complements of knotted solenoids in $\mathbb{S}^3$ is solely determined by a canonical sequence of knot groups. Moreover it its determined by the embedding up to mirror reflection.
The first examples of totally geodesic Seifert surfaces are constructed for hyperbolic knots and links, including both free and totally knotted surfaces. Then it is proved that two bridge knot complements cannot contain totally geodesic orientable surfaces.
Echeverria recently introduced an invariant for a smoothly embedded torus in a homology $S^1\times S^3$, using gauge theory for singular connections. We define a new topological invariant of such an embedded torus, analogous to the classical Levine-Tristram invariant of a knot. In the 3-dimensional situation, a count of singular connections on a knot complement reproduces the Levine-Tristram invariant. We compute the invariant for a number of examples embedded tori, and show that our topological invariant is the same as what one might expect from Echeverria's invariant. Langte Ma has subsequen…
In this paper we study embeddings of oriented connected closed surfaces in $\mathbb S^3$. We define a complete invariant, the fundamental span, for such embeddings, generalizing the notion of the peripheral system of a knot group. From the fundamental span, several computable invariants are derived and employed to study handlebody knots, bi-knotted surfaces, and chirality of knots. These invariants are capable to distinguish inequivalent handlebody knots and bi-knotted surfaces with homeomorphic complements. Particularly, we obtain an alternative proof of the inequivalence of Ishii et al.'s ha…
Fixing two concordant links in $3$--space, we study the set of all embedded concordances between them, as knotted annuli in $4$--space. When regarded up to surface-concordance or link-homotopy, the set $\mathcal{C}(L)$ of concordances from a link $L$ to itself forms a group. In order to investigate these groups, we define Milnor-type invariants of $\mathcal{C}(L)$, which are integers defined modulo a certain indeterminacy given by Milnor invariants of $L$. We show in particular that, for a slice link $L$, these invariants classify $\mathcal{C}(L)$ up to link-homotopy.
A qualgebra $G$ is a set having two binary operations that satisfy compatibility conditions which are modeled upon a group under conjugation and multiplication. We develop a homology theory for qualgebras and describe a classifying space for it. This space is constructed from $G$-colored prisms (products of simplices) and simultaneously generalizes (and includes) simplicial classifying spaces for groups and cubical classifying spaces for quandles. Degenerate cells of several types are added to the regular prismatic cells; by duality, these correspond to "non-rigid" Reidemeister moves and their…
Link-homotopy and self Delta-equivalence are equivalence relations on links. It was shown by J. Milnor (resp. the last author) that Milnor invariants determine whether or not a link is link-homotopic (resp. self Delta-equivalent) to a trivial link. We study link-homotopy and self Delta-equivalence on a certain component of a link with fixing the rest components, in other words, homotopy and Delta-equivalence of knots in the complement of a certain link. We show that Milnor invariants determine whether a knot in the complement of a trivial link is null-homotopic, and give a sufficient condition…
Consider a knot $K$ in $S^3$ with uniformly distributed electric charge. Whilst solutions to the Laplace equation in terms of Dirichlet integrals are readily available, it is still of theoretical and physical interest to understand the qualitative behavior of the potential, particularly with respect to critical points and equipotential surfaces. In this paper, we demonstrate how techniques from geometric topology can yield novel insights from the perspective of electrostatics. Specifically, we show that when the knot is sufficiently close to a planar projection, we prove a lower bound on the s…
We show that there exist non-trivial piecewise-linear (PL) knots with isolated singularities $S^{n-2}\subset S^n$, $n\geq 5$, whose complements have the homotopy type of a circle. This is in contrast to the case of smooth, PL locally-flat, and topological locally-flat knots, for which it is known that if the complement has the homotopy type of a circle, then the knot is trivial.
Fintushel and Stern have proved that if S \subset X is a symplectic surface in a symplectic 4-manifold such that S has simply-connected complement and nonnegative self-intersection, then there are infinitely many topologically equivalent but smoothly distinct embedded surfaces homologous to S. Here we extend this result to include symplectic surfaces whose self-intersection is bounded below by 2-2g, where g is the genus of S. We make use of tools from Heegaard Floer theory, and include several results that may be of independent interest. Specifically we give an analogue for Ozsvath-Szabo invar…
We study the homotopy types of complements of arrangements of n transverse planes in R^4, obtaining a complete classification for n <= 6, and lower bounds for the number of homotopy types in general. Furthermore, we show that the homotopy type of a 2-arrangement in R^4 is not determined by the cohomology ring, thereby answering a question of Ziegler. The invariants that we use are derived from the characteristic varieties of the complement. The nature of these varieties illustrates the difference between real and complex arrangements.
We prove the existence of lattice isomorphic line arrangements having $π_1$-equivalent or homotopy-equivalent complements and non homeomorphic embeddings in the complex projective plane. We also provide two explicit examples, one is formed by real-complexified arrangements while the second is not.
Balloons are two-dimensional spheres. Hoops are one dimensional loops. Knotted Balloons and Hoops (KBH) in 4-space behave much like the first and second homotopy groups of a topological space - hoops can be composed as in π_1, balloons as in π_2, and hoops "act" on balloons as π_1 acts on π_2. We observe that ordinary knots and tangles in 3-space map into KBH in 4-space and become amalgams of both balloons and hoops. We give an ansatz for a tree and wheel (that is, free-Lie and cyclic word) -valued invariant ζof (ribbon) KBHs in terms of the said compositions and action and we explain its rela…
Let f: P-->W be an embedding of a compact polyhedron in a closed oriented manifold W, let T be a regular neighborhood of P in W and let C:=closure(W-T) be its complement. Then W is the homotopy push-out of a diagram C<--dT-->P. This homotopy push-out square is an example of what is called a Poincare embedding. We study how to construct algebraic models, in particular in the sense of Sullivan, of that homotopy push-out from a model of the map f. When the codimension is high enough this allows us to completely determine the rational homotopy type of the complement C = W-f(P). Moreover we constru…
Every closed geodesic $γ$ on a surface has a canonically associated knot $\widehatγ$ in the projective unit tangent bundle. We study, for $γ$ filling, the volume of the associated knot complement with respect to its unique complete hyperbolic metric. We provide a lower bound for the volume relative to the number of homotopy classes of $γ$-arcs in each pair of pants of a pants decomposition of the surface.
A toric arrangement is a finite set of hypersurfaces in a complex torus, every hypersurface being the kernel of a character. In the present paper we build a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the arrangement complement, with a combinatorial description similar to that of the well-known Salvetti complex. If the toric arrangement is defined by a Weyl group we also provide an algebraic description, very handy for cohomology computations. In the last part we give a description in terms of tableaux for a toric arrangement appearing in robotics.
We study torsion properties of the twisted Alexander modules of the affine complement $M$ of a complex essential hyperplane arrangement, as well as those of punctured stratified tubular neighborhoods of complex essential hyperplane arrangements. We investigate divisibility properties between the twisted Alexander polynomials of the two spaces, compute the (first) twisted Alexander polynomial of a punctured stratified tubular neighborhood of an essential line arrangement, and study the possible roots of the twisted Alexander polynomials of both the complement and the punctured stratified tubula…
Checkerboard surfaces in alternating link complements are used frequently to determine information about the link. However, when many crossings are added to a single twist region of a link diagram, the geometry of the link complement stabilizes (approaches a geometric limit), but a corresponding checkerboard surface increases in complexity with crossing number. In this paper, we generalize checkerboard surfaces to certain immersed surfaces, called twisted checkerboard surfaces, whose geometry better reflects that of the alternating link in many cases. We describe the surfaces, show that they a…
Given a surface F, we are interested in Z/2 valued invariants of immersions of F into R^3, which are constant on each connected component of the complement of the quadruple point discriminant in Imm(F,R^3). Such invariants will be called ``q-invariants.'' Given a regular homotopy class A in Imm(F,R^3), we denote by V_n(A) the space of all q-invariants on A of order <= n. We show that if F is orientable, then for each regular homotopy class A and each n, dim(V_n(A) / V_{n-1}(A)) <= 1.
We consider a twisted version of the Hurewicz map on the complement of a hyperplane arrangement. The purpose of this paper is to prove surjectivity of the twisted Hurewicz map under some genericity conditions. As a corollary, we also prove that a generic section of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement has non-trivial homotopy groups.
Given a closed smooth manifold $M$ of even dimension $2n\ge6$ with finite fundamental group, we show that the classifying space ${\rm BDiff}(M)$ of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ is of finite type and has finitely generated homotopy groups in every degree. We also prove a variant of this result for manifolds with boundary and deduce that the space of smooth embeddings of a compact submanifold $N\subset M$ of arbitrary codimension into $M$ has finitely generated higher homotopy groups based at the inclusion, provided the fundamental group of the complement is finite. As an intermediate result,…
Given an $S\cong \mathbb{R}P^2$ smoothly embedded in a 4-manifold $X^4$ with Euler number 2 or -2, the Price twist is a surgery operation on $ν(S)$ yielding (up to) three different 4-manifolds: $X^4,τ_S(X^4),Σ_S(X^4)$. This is of particular interest when $X^4=S^4$, as then $Σ_S(X^4)$ is a homotopy 4-sphere which is not obviously diffeomorphic to $S^4$. In this paper, we show how to produce a trisection description of each Price twist on $S\subset X^4$ by producing a relative trisection of $X^4\setminusν(S)$. Moreover, we show how to produce a trisection description of general surface complemen…
