In this paper we establish a suprising fundamental identity for Parseval frames in a Hilbert space. Several variations of this result are given, including an extension to general frames. Finally, we discuss the derived results.
A very useful identity for Parseval frames for Hilbert spaces was obtained by Balan, Casazza, Edidin, and Kutyniok. In this paper, we obtain a similar identity for Parseval p-approximate Schauder frames for Banach spaces which admits a homogeneous semi-inner product in the sense of Lumer-Giles.
We construct Parseval wavelet frames in $L^2(M)$ for a general Riemannian manifold $M$ and we show the existence of wavelet unconditional frames in $L^p(M)$ for $1 < p <\infty$. This is made possible thanks to smooth orthogonal projection decomposition of the identity operator on $L^2(M)$, which was recently proven by the authors in arXiv:1803.03634. We also show a characterization of Triebel-Lizorkin $\mathbf F_{p,q}^s(M)$ and Besov $\mathbf B_{p,q}^s(M)$ spaces on compact manifolds in terms of magnitudes of coefficients of Parseval wavelet frames. We achieve this by showing that Hestenes ope…
We construct a Parseval frame with $n+1$ vectors in $\R^n$ that contains a given vector. We also provide a characterization of unit-norm frames that can be scaled to a Parseval frame.
Continuous frames over a Hilbert space have a rich and sophisticated structure that can be represented in the form of a fiber bundle. The fiber bundle structure reveals the central importance of Parseval frames and the extent to which Parseval frames generalize the notion of an orthonormal basis.
The objective of this article is to describe a construction of Parseval bandlimited and localized frames on sub-Riemannian compact homogeneous manifolds.
This paper examines the construction and properties of binary Parseval frames. We address two questions: When does a binary Parseval frame have a complementary Parseval frame? Which binary symmetric idempotent matrices are Gram matrices of binary Parseval frames? In contrast to the case of real or complex Parseval frames, the answer to these questions is not always affirmative. The key to our understanding comes from an algorithm that constructs binary orthonormal sequences that span a given subspace, whenever possible. Special regard is given to binary frames whose Gram matrices are circulant…
Parseval frames have particularly useful properties, and in some cases, they can be used to reconstruct signals which were analyzed by a non-Parseval frame. In this paper, we completely describe the degree to which such reconstruction is feasible. Indeed, notice that for fixed frames $\cF$ and $\cX$ with synthesis operators $F$ and $X$, the operator norm of $FX^*-I$ measures the (normalized) worst-case error in the reconstruction of vectors when analyzed with $\cX$ and synthesized with $\cF$. Hence, for any given frame $\cF$, we compute explicitly the infimum of the operator norms of $FX^*-I$,…
We introduce three quantities called total coherence, total volume, and nuclear energy, and we show that equiangular Parseval frames maximize all three of these quantities over the set of all Parseval frames. We then show that equiangular Parseval frames also maximize the total volume and nuclear energy over the set of equal norm frames. Along the way we derive a bound on the smallest k-dimensional volume in an equal norm frame which is a generalization of the Welch bound. We conclude with an extensive list of open questions.
In this paper, we focus on frames of operators or K-frames on Hilbert spaces in Parseval cases. Since equal-norm tight frames play important roles for robust data transmission, we aim to study this topics on Parseval K-frames. We will show that each finite set of equal-norms of vectors can be extended to an equal-norm K-frame. Also, we present a correspondence between Parseval K-frames and the set of all closed subspaces of a finite Hilbert space. Finally, a construction of equal-norm dual K-frames will be introduced.
We present a way to construct Parseval frames of piecewise constant functions for $L^2[0,1]$. The construction is similar to the generalized Walsh bases. It is based on iteration of operators that satisfy a Cuntz-type relation, but without the isometry property. We also show how the Parseval frame can be dilated to an orthonormal basis and the operators can be dilated to true Cuntz isometries.
In this paper we describe some properties of the generalized Gram-Schmidt procedure (GGSP) for generating Parseval frames which was first introduced by Casazza and Kutyniok [A generalization of Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization generating all Parseval frames, Adv. Comput. Math. 27 (2007), pp. 65-78]. Next we investigate the iterations of the procedure and its limit. In the end we give some examples of the iterated procedure.
In the framework of wave packet analysis, finite wavelet systems are particular classes of finite wave packet systems. In this paper, using a scaling matrix on a permuted version of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) of system generator, we derive a locally-scaled version of the DFT of system genarator and obtain a finite equal-norm Parseval wavelet frame over prime fields. We also give a characterization of all multiplicative subgroups of the cyclic multiplicative group, for which the associated wavelet systems form frames. Finally, we present some concrete examples as applications of our r…
Motivated by Bownik and Speegle's result on linear independence of wavelet Parseval frames, we consider affine systems (analogous to wavelet systems) defined on a second countable, locally compact abelian group $G$, where the translations are replaced by the action of a countable, discrete subgroup $Γ$ of $ G$ acting as a group of unitary operators on $L^2(G)$. The dilation operation in the wavelet setting is replaced by integer powers of a unitary operator $δ$ onto $L^2(G)$. We show that, under some compatibility conditions between $δ$ and the action of the group $Γ$, the linear independence …
Let $X$ be a symmetric space of the noncompact type. The goal of the paper is to construct in the space $L_{2}(X)$ nearly Parseval frames consisting of functions which simultaneously belong to Paley-Wiener spaces and to Schwartz space on $X$. We call them Paley-Wiener-Schwartz frames in $L_{2}(X)$. These frames are used to characterize a family of Besov spaces on $X$. As a part of our construction we develop on $X$ the so-called average Shannon-type sampling.
In 2014 Adam Marcus, Daniel Spielman and Nikhil Srivastava used random vectors to prove a key discrepancy theorem and in so doing gave a positive answer to the long-standing Kadison-Singer Problem. In this paper we use Walsh matrices to construct a class of natural frames in Euclidean space and discuss how these frames relate to the key discrepancy theorem.
Let $d\geq 1$ be a natural number and $A_0$ be a $d\times d$ expansive integral matrix with determinant $\pm 2.$ Then $A_0$ is integrally similar to an integral matrix $A$ with certain additional properties. A finite solution to the system of equations associated with the matrix $A$ will result in an iterated sequence $\{Ψ^k χ_{[0,1)^d}\}$ that converges to a function $φ_A$ in $L^2(\R^d)$-norm. With this (scaling) function $φ_A,$ we will construct the Parseval's wavelet function $ψ$ with compact support associated with matrix $A_0.$

Binary Parseval frames share many structural properties with real and complex ones. On the other hand, there are subtle differences, for example that the Gramian of a binary Parseval frame is characterized as a symmetric idempotent whose range contains at least one odd vector. Here, we study binary Parseval frames obtained from the orbit of a vector under a group representation, in short, binary Parseval group frames. In this case, the Gramian of the frame is in the algebra generated by the right regular representation. We identify equivalence classes of such Parseval frames with binary functi…
Wavelet set wavelets were the first examples of wavelets that may not have associated multiresolution analyses. Furthermore, they provided examples of complete orthonormal wavelet systems in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ which only require a single generating wavelet. Although work had been done to smooth these wavelets, which are by definition discontinuous on the frequency domain, nothing had been explicitly done over $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d >1$. This paper, along with another one cowritten by the author, finally addresses this issue. Smoothing does not work as expected in higher dimensions. For example, B…
The concept of super-wavelet was introduced by Balan, and Han and Larson over the field of real numbers which has many applications not only in engineering branches but also in different areas of mathematics. To develop this notion on local fields having positive characteristic we obtain characterizations of super-wavelets of finite length as well as Parseval frame multiwavelet sets of finite order in this setup. Using the group theoretical approach based on coset representatives, further we establish Shannon type multiwavelet in this perspective while providing examples of Parseval frame (mul…
Pseudo-splines of integer order $(m,\ell)$ were introduced by Daubechies, Han, Ron, and Shen as a family which allows interpolation between the classical B-splines and the Daubechies' scaling functions. The purpose of this paper is to generalize the pseudo-splines to fractional and complex orders $(z, \ell)$ with $α:=\re z > 1$. This allows increased flexibility in regard to smoothness: instead of working with a discrete family of functions from $C^m$, $m\in \N_0$, one uses a \emph{continuous} family of functions belonging to the Hölder spaces $C^{α-1}$. The presence of the imaginary part of $…
We solve the problem of best approximation by Parseval frames to an arbitrary frame in a subspace of an infinite dimensional Hilbert space. We explicitly describe all the solutions and we give a criterion for uniqueness. This best approximation problem was previously solved under an additional assumption on the set of Parseval frames in M. Frank, V. Paulsen, T. Tiballi, Symmetric approximation of frames and bases in Hilbert spaces, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 354 (2002), 777-793. Our proof relies on the geometric structure of the set of all Parseval frames quadratically close to a given frame. In …
This paper concerns the geometric structure of optimizers for frame potentials. We consider finite, real or complex frames and rotation or unitarily invariant potentials, and mostly specialize to Parseval frames, meaning the frame potential to be optimized is a function on the manifold of Gram matrices belonging to finite Parseval frames. Next to the known classes of equal-norm and equiangular Parseval frames, we introduce equidistributed Parseval frames, which are more general than the equiangular type but have more structure than equal-norm ones. We also provide examples where this class coi…
We develop the theory of frames and Parseval frames for finite-dimensional vector spaces over the binary numbers. This includes characterizations which are similar to frames and Parseval frames for real or complex Hilbert spaces, and the discussion of conceptual differences caused by the lack of a proper inner product on binary vector spaces. We also define switching equivalence for binary frames, and list all equivalence classes of binary Parseval frames in lowest dimensions, excluding cases of trivial redundancy.
We analyze Parseval frames generated by the action of an ICC group on a Hilbert space. We parametrize the set of all such Parseval frames by operators in the commutant of the corresponding representation. We characterize when two such frames are strongly disjoint. We prove an undersampling result showing that if the representation has a Parseval frame of norm $\frac{1}{\sqrt{N}}$, the Hilbert space is spanned by an orthonormal basis generated by a subgroup. As applications we obtain some sufficient conditions under which a unitary representation admits a Parseval frame which is spanned by an R…
Parseval frames can be thought of as redundant or linearly dependent coordinate systems for Hilbert spaces, and have important applications in such areas as signal processing, data compression, and sampling theory. We extend the notion of a Parseval frame for a fixed Hilbert space to that of a moving Parseval frame for a vector bundle over a manifold. Many vector bundles do not have a moving basis, but in contrast to this every vector bundle over a paracompact manifold has a moving Parseval frame. We prove that a sequence of sections of a vector bundle is a moving Parseval frame if and only if…
Motivated by the idea of $J$-frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$, introduced by Giribet \textit{et al.} (J. I. Giribet, A. Maestripieri, F. Martínez Pería, P. G. Massey, \textit{On frames for Krein spaces}, J. Math. Anal. Appl. (1), {\bf 393} (2012), 122--137.), we introduce the notion of $ζ-J$-tight frame for a Krein space $\textbf{\textit{K}}$. In this paper we characterize $J$-orthonormal basis for $\textbf{\textit{K}}$ in terms of $ζ-J$-Parseval frame. We show that a Krein space is richly supplied with $ζ-J$-Parseval frames. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition wh…
We investigate the structured frames for Hilbert $C^{*}$-modules. In the case that the underlying $C^{*}$-algebra is a commutative $W^*$-algebra, we prove that the set of the Parseval frame generators for a unitary operator group can be parameterized by the set of all the unitary operators in the double commutant of the group. Similar result holds for the set of all the general frame generators where the unitary operators are replaced by invertible and adjointable operators. Consequently, the set of all the Parseval frame generators is path-connected. We also obtain the existence and uniquenes…
A row co-isometry is a family $(V_i)_{i=0}^{N-1}$ of operators on a Hilbert space, subject to the relation $$\sum_{i=0}^{N-1}V_iV_i^*=I.$$ As shown in \cite{BJK00}, row co-isometries appear as compressions of representations of Cuntz algebras. In this paper we will present some general constructions of Parseval frames for Hilbert spaces, obtained by iterating the operators $V_i$ on a finite set of vectors. The constructions are based on random walks on finite graphs. As applications of our constructions we obtain Parseval Fourier bases on self-affine measures and Parseval Walsh bases on the in…
This article gives a procedure to convert a frame which is not a tight frame into a Parseval frame for the same space, with the requirement that each element in the resulting Parseval frame can be explicitly written as a linear combination of the elements in the original frame. Several examples are considered, such as a Fourier frame on a spiral. The procedure can be applied to the construction of Parseval frames for L^2(B(0,R)), the space of square integrable functions whose domain is the ball of radius R. When a finite number of measurements are used to reconstruct a signal in L^2(B(0,R)), e…
In this paper we introduce a new probabilistic model for optimizing erasures occurring in data transmission using Parseval frames and a sequence of Bernoulli random variables associated to the channels of the transmission. We establish several results characterizing the optimal Parseval frames for our model. We show also that compared to existing models \cite{holmes2004optimal,casazza2003equal,leng2013probability,li2018frame}, our model gives better performance.
We generalize the compatible tower condition given by Strichartz to the almost-Parseval-frame tower and show that non-trivial examples of almost-Parseval-frame tower exist. By doing so, we demonstrate the first singular fractal measure which has only finitely many mutually orthogonal exponentials (and hence it does not admit any exponential orthonormal bases), but it still admits Fourier frames.
In the last decade, methods based on various kinds of spherical wavelet bases have found applications in virtually all areas where analysis of spherical data is required, including cosmology, weather prediction, and geodesy. In particular, the so-called needlets (=band-limited Parseval frames) have become an important tool for the analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature data. The goal of the present paper is to construct band-limited and highly localized Parseval frames on general compact homogeneous manifolds. Our construction can be considered as an analogue of the well-kno…
We establish dilation theorems for non-tight frames with additional structure, i.e., frames generated by unitary groups of operators and projective unitary representations. This generalizes previous dilation results for Parseval frames due to Han and Larson and Gabardo and Han. We also extend the dilation theorem for Parseval wavelets, due to Dutkay, Han, Picioroaga, and Sun , by identifying the optimal class of frame wavelets for which dilation into an orthonormal wavelet is possible.
In this work we introduce a class of discrete groups containing subgroups of abstract translations and dilations, respectively. A variety of wavelet systems can appear as $π(\G)ψ$, where $π$ is a unitary representation of a wavelet group and $\G$ is the abstract pseudo-lattice $\G$. We prove a condition in order that a Parseval frame $π(\G)ψ$ can be dilated to an orthonormal basis of the form $τ(\G)Ψ$ where $τ$ is a super-representation of $π$. For a subclass of groups that includes the case where the translation subgroup is Heisenberg, we show that this condition always holds, and we cite fam…
We make a detailed study of norm retrieval. We give several classification theorems for norm retrieval and give a large number of examples to go with the theory. One consequence is a new result about Parseval frames: If a Parseval frame is divided into two subsets with spans $W_1,W_2$ and $W_1 \cap W_2=\{0\}$, then $W_1 \perp W_2$.
Our article is a summary of some results for Riemannian manifolds that were obtained in \cite{gpes}-\cite{Pesssubm}. To the best of our knowledge these are the pioneering papers which contain the most general results about frames, Shannon sampling, and cubature formulas on compact and non-compact Riemannian manifolds. In particular, the paper \cite{gpes} gives an "end point" construction of tight localized frames on homogeneous compact manifolds. The paper \cite{Pessubm} is the first systematic development of localized frames on compact domains in Euclidean spaces.
In this paper we characterize $\sqrt{2}$-1-uniform $J$-Parseval fusion frames in a Krein space $\mathbb{K}$. We provide a few results regarding construction of new $J$-tight fusion frame from given $J$-tight fusion frames. We also characterize any uniformly $J$-definite subspace of a Krein space $\mathbb{K}$ in terms of a $J$-fusion frame inequality. Finally we generalize the fundamental identity of frames in Krein space $J$-fusion frame setting.
The goal is to extend Gleason's notion of a frame function, which is essential in his fundamental theorem in quantum measurement, to a more general function acting on 1-tight, so-called, Parseval frames. We refer to these functions as Gleason functions for Parseval frames. The reason for our generalization is that positive operator valued measures (POVMs) are essentially equivalent to Parseval frames, and that POVMs arise naturally in quantum measurement theory. We prove that under the proper assumptions, Gleason functions for Parseval frames are quadratic forms, as well as other results analo…
Finite frame theory has a number of real-world applications. In applications like sparse signal processing, data transmission with robustness to erasures, and reconstruction without phase, there is a pressing need for deterministic constructions of frames with the following property: every size-M subcollection of the M-dimensional frame elements is a spanning set. Such frames are called full spark frames, and this paper provides new constructions using the discrete Fourier transform. Later, we prove that full spark Parseval frames are dense in the entire set of Parseval frames, meaning full sp…
We study singly-generated wavelet systems on $\Bbb R^2$ that are naturally associated with rank-one wavelet systems on the Heisenberg group $N$. We prove a necessary condition on the generator in order that any such system be a Parseval frame. Given a suitable subset $I$ of the dual of $N$, we give an explicit construction for Parseval frame wavelets that are associated with $I$. We say that $g\in L^2(I\times \Bbb R)$ is Gabor field over $I$ if, for a.e. $λ\in I$, $|λ|^{1/2} g(λ,\cdot)$ is the Gabor generator of a Parseval frame for $L^2(\Bbb R)$, and that $I$ is a Heisenberg wavelet set if ev…
In this paper we establish Parseval type identities and surprising new inequalities for Hilbert-Schmidt frames. Our results generalize and improve the remarkable results which have been obtained by Balan et al. and G{ă}vru{ţ}a.
In this paper, we establish Parseval identities and surprising new inequalities for weaving frames in Hilbert space, which involve scalar $λ\in\rs$. By suitable choices of $λ$, one obtains the previous results as special cases. Our results generalize and improve the remarkable results which have been obtained by Balan et al. and Găvruţa.
Given a window $ϕ\in L^2(\mathbb R),$ and lattice parameters $α, β>0,$ we introduce a bimodal Wilson system $\mathcal{W}(ϕ, α, β)$ consisting of linear combinations of at most two elements from an associated Gabor $\mathcal{G}(ϕ, α, β)$. For a class of window functions $ϕ,$ we show that the Gabor system $\mathcal{G}(ϕ, α, β)$ is a tight frame of redundancy $β^{-1}$ if and only if the Wilson system $\mathcal{W}(ϕ, α, β)$ is Parseval system for $L^2(\mathbb R).$ Examples of smooth rapidly decaying generators $ϕ$ are constructed. In addition, when $3\leq β^{-1}\in \mathbb N$, we prove that it is …
For two given full-rank lattices $\mathcal{L}=A\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $\mathcal{K}=B\mathbb{Z}^d$ in $\mathbf{R}^d$, where $A$ and $B$ are nonsingular real $d\times d$ matrices, a function $g(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a Parseval Gabor frame generator if $\sum_{\bf{l},\bf{k}\in\mathbb{Z}^d}|\langle f, {e^{2πi\langle B\bf{k},\bf{t}\rangle}}g(\bf{t}-A\bf{l})\rangle|^2=\|f\|^2$ holds for any $f(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$. It is known that Parseval Gabor frame generators exist if and only if $|\det(AB)|\le 1$. A function $h\in L^{\infty}(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a functional Gabor frame…
In this paper, we view matrix frames as representations of quivers and study them within the general framework of quiver invariant theory. We are thus led to consider the large class of semi-stable matrix frames. Within this class, we are particularly interested in radial isotropic and Parseval matrix frames. Using methods from quiver invariant theory [CD19], we first prove a far reaching generalization of Barthe's Radial Isotropy Theorem [Bar98] to matrix frames (see Theorems 1(3) and 29). With this tool at our disposal, we provide a quiver invariant theoretic approach to the Paulsen problem …
Fusion frame theory is an emerging mathematical theory that provides a natural framework for performing hierarchical data processing. A fusion frame is a frame-like collection of subspaces in a Hilbert space, thereby generalizing the concept of a frame for signal representation. In this paper, we study the existence and construction of fusion frames. We first present a complete characterization of a special class of fusion frames, called Parseval fusion frames. The value of Parseval fusion frames is that the inverse fusion frame operator is equal to the identity and therefore signal reconstruc…
