For two given full-rank lattices $\mathcal{L}=A\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $\mathcal{K}=B\mathbb{Z}^d$ in $\mathbf{R}^d$, where $A$ and $B$ are nonsingular real $d\times d$ matrices, a function $g(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a Parseval Gabor frame generator if $\sum_{\bf{l},\bf{k}\in\mathbb{Z}^d}|\langle f, {e^{2πi\langle B\bf{k},\bf{t}\rangle}}g(\bf{t}-A\bf{l})\rangle|^2=\|f\|^2$ holds for any $f(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$. It is known that Parseval Gabor frame generators exist if and only if $|\det(AB)|\le 1$. A function $h\in L^{\infty}(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a functional Gabor frame multiplier if it has the property that $hg$ is a Parseval Gabor frame generator for $L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ whenever $g$ is. It is conjectured that an if and only if condition for a function $h\in L^{\infty}(\mathbf{R}^d)$ to be a functional Gabor frame multiplier is that $h$ must be unimodular and $h(\bf{x})\overline{h(\bf{x}-(B^T)^{-1}\bf{k})}=h(\bf{x}-A\bf{l})\overline{h(\bf{x}-A\bf{l}-(B^T)^{-1}\bf{k})},\ \forall\ \bf{x}\in \mathbf{R}^d$ {\em a.e.} for any $\bf{l},\bf{k}\in \mathbb{Z}^d$, $\bf{k}\not=\bf{0}$. The if part of this conjecture is true and can be proven easily, however the only if part of the conjecture has only been proven in the one dimensional case to this date. In this paper we prove that the only if part of the conjecture holds in the two dimensional case.
We investigate a new representation of general operators by means of sums of shifted Gabor multipliers. These representations arise by studying the matrix of an operator with respect to a Gabor frame. Each shifted Gabor multiplier corresponds to a side-diagonal of this matrix. This representation is especially useful for operators whose associated matrix possesses some off-diagonal decay. In this case one can completely characterize the symbol class of the operator by the size of the symbols of the Gabor multipliers. As an application we derive approximation theorems for pseudodifferential ope…
Functional Gabor single-frame or multi-frame generator multipliers are the matrices of function entries that preserve Parseval Gabor single-frame or multi-frame generators. An interesting and natural question is how to characterize all such multipliers. This question has been answered for several special cases including the case of single-frame generators in two dimensions and the case of multi-frame generators in one-dimension. In this paper we completely characterize multipliers for Gabor single-frame and multi-frame generators with respect to separable time-frequency lattices in any given d…
We develop a theory of quantum harmonic analysis on lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. Convolutions of a sequence with an operator and of two operators are defined over a lattice, and using corresponding Fourier transforms of sequences and operators we develop a version of harmonic analysis for these objects. We prove analogues of results from classical harmonic analysis and the quantum harmonic analysis of Werner, including Tauberian theorems and a Wiener division lemma. Gabor multipliers from time-frequency analysis are described as convolutions in this setting. The quantum harmonic analysis is …
We study the fractal uncertainty principle in the joint time-frequency representation, and we prove a version for the Short-Time Fourier transform with Gaussian window on the modulation spaces. This can equivalently be formulated in terms of projection operators on the Bargmann-Fock spaces of entire functions. Specifically for signals in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we obtain norm estimates of Daubechies' time-frequency localization operator localizing on porous sets. The proof is based on the maximal Nyquist density of such sets, and for multidimensional Cantor iterates we derive explicit upper bound…
A general principle says that the matrix of a Fourier integral operator with respect to wave packets is concentrated near the curve of propagation. We prove a precise version of this principle for Fourier integral operators with a smooth phase and a symbol in the Sjoestrand class and use Gabor frames as wave packets. The almost diagonalization of such Fourier integral operators suggests a specific approximation by (a sum of) elementary operators, namely modified Gabor multipliers. We derive error estimates for such approximations. The methods are taken from time-frequency analysis.
Let $Φ$ and $Ψ$ be frames for $\cal H$ and let $M_{m,Φ,Ψ}$ be a frame multiplier with the symbol $m$. In this paper, we restrict our investigation to show that the operator properties of $M_{m,Φ,Ψ}$ are stable under the perturbations of $Φ$, $Ψ$ and $m$. Also, special attention is devoted to the study of invertible frame multipliers. These results are not only of interest in their own right, but also they pave the way for obtaining some new results for Gabor multipliers which have been studied mostly by Hans Georg Feichtinger and his coauthors in recent years.
Certain mathematical objects appear in a lot of scientific disciplines, like physics, signal processing and, naturally, mathematics. In a general setting they can be described as frame multipliers, consisting of analysis, multiplication by a fixed sequence (called the symbol), and synthesis. They are not only interesting mathematical objects, but also important for applications, for example for the realization of time-varying filters. In this paper we show a surprising result about the inverse of such operators, if existing, as well as new results about a core concept of frame theory, dual fra…
The paper presents a survey over frame multipliers and related concepts. In particular, it includes a short motivation of why multipliers are of interest to consider, a review as well as extension of recent results, devoted to the unconditional convergence of multipliers, sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the invertibility of multipliers, and representation of the inverse via Neumann-like series and via multipliers with particular parameters. Multipliers for frames with specific structure, namely, Gabor and wavelet multipliers, are also considered. Some of the results for the represen…
This paper introduces the concept of Bessel multipliers. These operators are defined by a fixed multiplication pattern, which is inserted between the Analysis and synthesis operators. The proposed concept unifies the approach used for Gabor multipliers for arbitrary analysis/synthesis systems, which form Bessel sequences, like wavelet or irregular Gabor frames. The basic properties of this class of operators are investigated. In particular the implications of summability properties of the symbol for the membership of the corresponding operators in certain operator classes are specified. As a s…
We propose a framework for bilinear multiplier operators defined via the (bivariate) spectral theorem. Under this framework we prove Coifman-Meyer type multiplier theorems and fractional Leibniz rules. Our theory applies to bilinear multipliers associated with the discrete Laplacian on $\mathbb{Z}^d,$ general bi-radial bilinear Dunkl multipliers, and to bilinear multipliers associated with the Jacobi expansions.
We consider a class of linear Schroedinger equations in R^d, with analytic symbols. We prove a global-in-time integral representation for the corresponding propagator as a generalized Gabor multiplier with a window analytic and decaying exponentially at infinity, which is transported by the Hamiltonian flow. We then provide three applications of the above result: the exponential sparsity in phase space of the corresponding propagator with respect to Gabor wave packets, a wave packet characterization of Fourier integral operators with analytic phases and symbols, and the propagation of analytic…
This paper generalizes the classical Sz.-Nagy--Foias $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ functional calculus for Hilbert space contractions. In particular, we replace the single contraction $T$ with a tuple $T=(T_1, \dots, T_d)$ of commuting bounded operators on a Hilbert space and replace $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$ with a large class of multiplier algebras of Hilbert function spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb C^d$.
We prove that the existence of a Mihlin-Hörmander functional calculus for an operator $L$ implies the boundedness on $L^p$ of both the maximal operators and the continuous square functions build on spectral multipliers of $L.$ The considered multiplier functions are finitely smooth and satisfy an integral condition at infinity. In particular multipliers of compact support are admitted.
We obtain a general Marcinkiewicz-type multiplier theorem for mixed systems of strongly commuting operators $L=(L_1,...,L_d);$ where some of the operators in $L$ have only a holomorphic functional calculus, while others have additionally a Marcinkiewicz-type functional calculus. Moreover, we prove that specific Laplace transform type multipliers of the pair $(\mathcal{L},A)$ are of certain weak type $(1,1).$ Here $\mathcal{L}$ is the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator while $A$ is a non-negative operator having Gaussian bounds for its heat kernel. Our results include the Riesz transforms $A(\mathcal{…
Recent research has shown that the properties of overcomplete Gabor frames and frames arising from shift-invariant systems form a precise match with certain conditions that are necessary for a frame in $L^2(\mathbf R)$ to have a representation $\{T^k φ\}_{k=0}^\infty$ for some bounded linear operator $T$ on $L^2(\mathbf R)$ and some $φ\in L^2(\mathbf R).$ However, for frames of this type the existence of such a representation has only been confirmed in the case of Riesz bases. This leads to several open questions connecting dynamical sampling, coherent states, frame theory, and operator theory…
Let $\Box_b$ be the Kohn Laplacian acting on $(0,j)$-forms on the unit sphere in $\mathbb{C}^n$. In a recent paper of Casarino, Cowling, Sikora and the author, a spectral multiplier theorem of Mihlin--Hörmander type for $\Box_b$ is proved in the case $0<j<n-1$. Here we prove an analogous theorem in the exceptional cases $j=0$ and $j=n-1$, including a weak type $(1,1)$ endpoint estimate. We also show that both theorems are sharp. The proof hinges on an abstract multivariate multiplier theorem for systems of commuting operators.
A classical theorem of Mihlin yields Lp estimates for spectral multipliers Lp(R^d) -> Lp(R^d); g -> F^{-1}[f(| |^2) Fg] in terms of L^\infty bounds of the multiplier function f and its weighted derivatives up to an order > d/2. This theorem, which is a functional calculus for the standard Laplace operator, has generalisations in several contexts such as elliptic operators on domains and manifolds, Schrödinger operators and sublaplacians on Lie groups. However, for the wave equation functions f (s) = (1 + s)^{-α} e^{its} a better estimate is available, in the standard case (works of Miyachi and…
In this work we investigate semigroups of operators acting on noncommutative $L^p$-spaces. We introduce noncommutative square functions and their connection to sectoriality, variants of Rademacher sectoriality, and $H^\infty$ functional calculus. We discuss several examples of noncommutative diffusion semigroups. This includes Schur multipliers, $q$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroups, and the noncommutative Poisson semigroup on free groups.
In this work, we solve the problem explicitly stated at the end of a paper of Junge, Mei and Parcet [JEMS2018, Problem C.5] for a large class of groups including all amenable groups and free groups. More precisely, we prove that the Hodge-Dirac operator of the canonical "hidden" noncommutative geometry associated with a Markov semigroup $(T_t)_{t \geq 0}$ of Fourier multipliers is bisectorial and admits a bounded $\mathrm{H}^\infty$ functional calculus on a bisector which implies a positive answer to the quoted problem. Our result can be seen as a strengthening of the dimension free estimates …
In this paper, recent abstract multiplier theorems for $0$-sectorial and $0$-strip type operators by Kriegler and Weis (2018) are refined and generalized to arbitrary sectorial and strip-type operators. To this end, holomorphic Hörmander-type functions on sectors and strips are introduced with a scale of smoothness being finer than the classical polynomial one. Moreover, we establish alternative descriptions of these spaces involving Schwartz and "holomorphic Schwartz" functions. Finally, the abstract results are combined with a recent result by Carbonaro and Dragičević (2017) to obtain an imp…
We consider operators acting on a UMD Banach lattice $X$ that have the same algebraic structure as the position and momentum operators associated with the harmonic oscillator $-\frac12Δ+ \frac12|x|^{2} $ acting on $L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$. More precisely, we consider abstract harmonic oscillators of the form $\frac12 \sum _{j=1} ^{d}(A_{j}^{2}+B_{j}^{2})$ for tuples of operators $A=(A_{j})_{j=1} ^{d}$ and $B=(B_{k})_{k=1} ^{d}$, where $iA_j$ and $iB_k$ are assumed to generate $C_{0}$ groups and to satisfy the canonical commutator relations. We prove functional calculus results for these abstrac…
We investigate Hörmander spectral multiplier theorems as they hold on $X = L^p(Ω),\: 1 < p < \infty,$ for many self-adjoint elliptic differential operators $A$ including the standard Laplacian on $\R^d.$ A strengthened matricial extension is considered, which coincides with a completely bounded map between operator spaces in the case that $X$ is a Hilbert space. We show that the validity of the matricial Hörmander theorem can be characterized in terms of square function estimates for imaginary powers $A^{it}$, for resolvents $R(λ,A),$ and for the analytic semigroup $\exp(-zA).$ We deduce Hörma…
We work with very general Banach spaces of analytic functions in the disk or other domains which satisfy a minimum number of natural axioms. Among the preliminary results, we discuss some implications of the basic axioms and identify all functional Banach spaces in which every bounded analytic function is a pointwise multiplier. Next, we characterize (in various ways) the weighted composition operators among the bounded operators on such spaces, thus generalizing some well-known results on multiplication or composition operators. We also characterize the invertible weighted composition operato…
The Gel'fand-Shilov spaces of type S are considered as topological algebras with respect to the Moyal star product and their corresponding algebras of multipliers are defined and investigated. In contrast to the well-studied case of Schwartz's space S, these multipliers are allowed to have nonpolynomial growth or infinite order singularities. The Moyal multiplication is thereby extended to certain classes of ultradistributions, hyperfunctions, and analytic functionals. The main theorem of the paper characterizes those elements of the dual of a given test function space that are the Moyal multi…
We consider nuclear function spaces on which the Weyl-Heisenberg group acts continuously and study the basic properties of the twisted convolution product of the functions with the dual space elements. The final theorem characterizes the corresponding algebra of convolution multipliers and shows that it contains all sufficiently rapidly decreasing functionals in the dual space. Consequently, we obtain a general description of the Moyal multiplier algebra of the Fourier-transformed space. The results extend the Weyl symbol calculus beyond the traditional framework of tempered distributions.
