Functional Gabor single-frame or multi-frame generator multipliers are the matrices of function entries that preserve Parseval Gabor single-frame or multi-frame generators. An interesting and natural question is how to characterize all such multipliers. This question has been answered for several special cases including the case of single-frame generators in two dimensions and the case of multi-frame generators in one-dimension. In this paper we completely characterize multipliers for Gabor single-frame and multi-frame generators with respect to separable time-frequency lattices in any given dimension. Our approach is general and applies to the previously known cases as well.
We investigate a new representation of general operators by means of sums of shifted Gabor multipliers. These representations arise by studying the matrix of an operator with respect to a Gabor frame. Each shifted Gabor multiplier corresponds to a side-diagonal of this matrix. This representation is especially useful for operators whose associated matrix possesses some off-diagonal decay. In this case one can completely characterize the symbol class of the operator by the size of the symbols of the Gabor multipliers. As an application we derive approximation theorems for pseudodifferential ope…
We develop a theory of quantum harmonic analysis on lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$. Convolutions of a sequence with an operator and of two operators are defined over a lattice, and using corresponding Fourier transforms of sequences and operators we develop a version of harmonic analysis for these objects. We prove analogues of results from classical harmonic analysis and the quantum harmonic analysis of Werner, including Tauberian theorems and a Wiener division lemma. Gabor multipliers from time-frequency analysis are described as convolutions in this setting. The quantum harmonic analysis is …
We study the fractal uncertainty principle in the joint time-frequency representation, and we prove a version for the Short-Time Fourier transform with Gaussian window on the modulation spaces. This can equivalently be formulated in terms of projection operators on the Bargmann-Fock spaces of entire functions. Specifically for signals in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$, we obtain norm estimates of Daubechies' time-frequency localization operator localizing on porous sets. The proof is based on the maximal Nyquist density of such sets, and for multidimensional Cantor iterates we derive explicit upper bound…
For two given full-rank lattices $\mathcal{L}=A\mathbb{Z}^d$ and $\mathcal{K}=B\mathbb{Z}^d$ in $\mathbf{R}^d$, where $A$ and $B$ are nonsingular real $d\times d$ matrices, a function $g(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a Parseval Gabor frame generator if $\sum_{\bf{l},\bf{k}\in\mathbb{Z}^d}|\langle f, {e^{2πi\langle B\bf{k},\bf{t}\rangle}}g(\bf{t}-A\bf{l})\rangle|^2=\|f\|^2$ holds for any $f(\bf{t})\in L^2(\mathbf{R}^d)$. It is known that Parseval Gabor frame generators exist if and only if $|\det(AB)|\le 1$. A function $h\in L^{\infty}(\mathbf{R}^d)$ is called a functional Gabor frame…
A general principle says that the matrix of a Fourier integral operator with respect to wave packets is concentrated near the curve of propagation. We prove a precise version of this principle for Fourier integral operators with a smooth phase and a symbol in the Sjoestrand class and use Gabor frames as wave packets. The almost diagonalization of such Fourier integral operators suggests a specific approximation by (a sum of) elementary operators, namely modified Gabor multipliers. We derive error estimates for such approximations. The methods are taken from time-frequency analysis.
Let $Φ$ and $Ψ$ be frames for $\cal H$ and let $M_{m,Φ,Ψ}$ be a frame multiplier with the symbol $m$. In this paper, we restrict our investigation to show that the operator properties of $M_{m,Φ,Ψ}$ are stable under the perturbations of $Φ$, $Ψ$ and $m$. Also, special attention is devoted to the study of invertible frame multipliers. These results are not only of interest in their own right, but also they pave the way for obtaining some new results for Gabor multipliers which have been studied mostly by Hans Georg Feichtinger and his coauthors in recent years.
Certain mathematical objects appear in a lot of scientific disciplines, like physics, signal processing and, naturally, mathematics. In a general setting they can be described as frame multipliers, consisting of analysis, multiplication by a fixed sequence (called the symbol), and synthesis. They are not only interesting mathematical objects, but also important for applications, for example for the realization of time-varying filters. In this paper we show a surprising result about the inverse of such operators, if existing, as well as new results about a core concept of frame theory, dual fra…
The paper presents a survey over frame multipliers and related concepts. In particular, it includes a short motivation of why multipliers are of interest to consider, a review as well as extension of recent results, devoted to the unconditional convergence of multipliers, sufficient and/or necessary conditions for the invertibility of multipliers, and representation of the inverse via Neumann-like series and via multipliers with particular parameters. Multipliers for frames with specific structure, namely, Gabor and wavelet multipliers, are also considered. Some of the results for the represen…
This paper introduces the concept of Bessel multipliers. These operators are defined by a fixed multiplication pattern, which is inserted between the Analysis and synthesis operators. The proposed concept unifies the approach used for Gabor multipliers for arbitrary analysis/synthesis systems, which form Bessel sequences, like wavelet or irregular Gabor frames. The basic properties of this class of operators are investigated. In particular the implications of summability properties of the symbol for the membership of the corresponding operators in certain operator classes are specified. As a s…
Nonstationary Gabor frames were recently introduced in adaptive signal analysis. They represent a natural generalization of classical Gabor frames by allowing for adaptivity of windows and lattice in either time or frequency. In this paper we show a general existence result for this family of frames. We then give a perturbation result for nonstationary Gabor frames and construct nonstationary Gabor frames with non-compactly supported windows from a related painless nonorthogonal expansion. Finally, the theoretical results are illustrated by two examples of practical relevance.
We derive new obstructions for Gabor frames. This note explains and proves the computer generated observations of Lemvig and Nielsen in arXiv:1507.03982.
Gabor frames have gained considerable popularity during the past decade, primarily due to their substantiated applications in diverse and widespread fields of engineering and science. Finding general and verifiable conditions which imply that the Gabor systems are Gabor frames is among the core problems in time-frequency analysis. In this paper, we give some simple and sufficient conditions that ensure a Gabor system ${M_{u(m)b}T_{u(n)a}g:m,n\in \mathbb N_{0}}$ to be a frame for L^2(K). The conditions proposed are stated in terms of the Fourier transforms of the Gabor system's generating funct…
Nonstationary Gabor frames, recently introduced in adaptive signal analysis, represent a natural generalization of classical Gabor frames by allowing for adaptivity of windows and lattice in either time or frequency. Due to the lack of a complete lattice structure, perfect reconstruction is in general not feasible from coefficients obtained from nonstationary Gabor frames. In this paper it is shown that for nonstationary Gabor frames that are related to some known frames for which dual frames can be computed, good approximate reconstruction can be achieved by resorting to approximately dual fr…
We report on initial findings on Gabor systems with multivariate Gaussian window. Unlike the existing characterisation for dimension one in terms of lattice density, our results indicate that the behavior of Gaussians in higher-dimensional Gabor systems is intricate and further exploration is a valuable and challenging task.
The construction of finite tight Gabor frames plays an important role in many applications. These applications include significant ones in signal and image processing. We explore when constant amplitude zero autocorrelation (CAZAC) sequences can be used to generate tight Gabor frames. The main theorem uses Janssen's representation and the zeros of the discrete periodic ambiguity function to give necessary and sufficient conditions for determining whether any Gabor frame is tight. The relevance of the theorem depends significantly on the construction of examples. These examples are necessarily …
We develop a theory of discrete directional Gabor frames for functions defined on the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space. Our construction incorporates the concept of ridge functions into the theory of isotropic Gabor systems, in order to develop an anisotropic Gabor system with strong directional sensitivity. We present sufficient conditions on a window function $g$ and a sampling set $Λ$ for the corresponding directional Gabor system $\{g_{m,t,u}\}_{(m,t,u)\inΛ}$ to form a discrete frame. Explicit estimates on the frame bounds are developed. A numerical implementation of our scheme is also pres…
We obtain characterizations of asymptotic properties of Schwartz distribution by using Gabor frames. Our characterizations are indeed Tauberian theorems for shift asymptotics (S-asymptotics) in terms of short-time Fourier transforms with respect to windows generating Gabor frames. For it, we show that the Gabor coefficient operator provides (topological) isomorphisms of the spaces of tempered distributions $\mathcal{S}'(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and distributions of exponential type $\mathcal{K}'_{1}(\mathbb{R}^{d})$ onto their images.
We investigate the structural properties of dual systems for nonstationary Gabor frames. In particular, we prove that some inverse nonstationary Gabor frame operators admit a Walnut-like representation, i.e. the operator acting on a function can be described by weighted translates of that function, even when the original frame operator is not diagonal. In this case, which only occurs when compactly supported window functions are used, the canonical dual frame partially inherits the structure of the original frame, with differences that we describe in detail. Moreover, we determine a sufficient…
We investigate the problem of constructing sparse time-frequency representations with flexible frequency resolution, studying the theory of nonstationary Gabor frames in the framework of decomposition spaces. Given a painless nonstationary Gabor frame, we construct a compatible decomposition space and prove that the nonstationary Gabor frame forms a Banach frame for the decomposition space. Furthermore, we show that the decomposition space norm can be completely characterized by a sparseness condition on the frame coefficients and we prove an upper bound on the approximation error occurring wh…
We investigate Gabor frames on locally compact abelian groups with time-frequency shifts along non-separable, closed subgroups of the phase space. Density theorems in Gabor analysis state necessary conditions for a Gabor system to be a frame or a Riesz basis, formulated only in terms of the index subgroup. In the classical results the subgroup is assumed to be discrete. We prove density theorems for general closed subgroups of the phase space, where the necessary conditions are given in terms of the "size" of the subgroup. From these density results we are able to extend the classical Wexler-R…
We show that Hilbert-Schmidt operators can be used to define frame-like structures for $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ over lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ that include multi-window Gabor frames as a special case. These frame-like structures are called Gabor g-frames, as they are examples of g-frames as introduced by Sun. We show that Gabor g-frames share many properties of Gabor frames, including a Janssen representation and Wexler-Raz biorthogonality conditions. A central part of our analysis is a notion of Fourier series of periodic operators based on earlier work by Feichtinger and Kozek, where we show …
We introduce a new notion for the deformation of Gabor systems. Such deformations are in general nonlinear and, in particular, include the standard jitter error and linear deformations of phase space. With this new notion we prove a strong deformation result for Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences that covers the known perturbation and deformation results. Our proof of the deformation theorem requires a new characterization of Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz sequences. It is in the style of Beurling's characterization of sets of sampling for bandlimited functions and extends significantly the …
G\v avruta studied atomic systems in terms of frames for range of operators (that is, for subspaces), namely $K$-frames, where the lower frame condition is controlled by the Hilbert-adjoint of a bounded linear operator $K$. For a locally compact abelian group G and a positive integer $n$, we study frames of matrix-valued Gabor systems in the matrix-valued Lebesgue space $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{n\times n})$ , where a bounded linear operator $Θ$ on $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{n\times n})$ controls not only lower but also the upper frame condition. We term such frames matrix-valued $(Θ, Θ^*)$-Gabor frames. F…
It is well known that the Gabor expansions converge to identity operator in weak* sense on the Wiener amalgam spaces as sampling density tends to infinity. In this paper we prove the convergence of Gabor expansions to identity operator in the operator norm as well as weak* sense on $W(L^p, \ell^q)$ as the sampling density tends to infinity. Also we show the validity of the Janssen's representation and the Wexler-Raz biorthogonality condition for Gabor frame operator on $W(L^p, \ell^q)$.
We prove that an overcomplete Gabor frame in $ \ell^2(\mathbf Z)$ by a finitely supported sequence is always linearly dependent. This is a particular case of a general result about linear dependence versus independence for Gabor systems in $\ell^2(\mathbf Z)$ with modulation parameter $1/M$ and translation parameter $N$ for some $M,N\in \mathbf N,$ and generated by a finite sequence $g$ in $\ell^2(\mathbf Z)$ with $K$ nonzero entries.
In this work we extend classical structure and duality results in Gabor analysis on the euclidean space to the setting of second countable locally compact abelian (LCA) groups. We formulate the concept of rationally oversampling of Gabor systems in an LCA group and prove corresponding characterization results via the Zak transform. From these results we derive non-existence results for critically sampled continuous Gabor frames. We obtain general characterizations in time and in frequency domain of when two Gabor generators yield dual frames. Moreover, we prove the Walnut and Janssen represent…
We consider sparseness properties of adaptive time-frequency representations obtained using nonstationary Gabor frames (NSGFs). NSGFs generalize classical Gabor frames by allowing for adaptivity in either time or frequency. It is known that the concept of painless nonorthogonal expansions generalizes to the nonstationary case, providing perfect reconstruction and an FFT based implementation for compactly supported window functions sampled at a certain density. It is also known that for some signal classes, NSGFs with flexible time resolution tend to provide sparser expansions than can be obtai…
The concept of R-duals of a frame was introduced by Casazza, Kutyniok and Lammers in 2004, with the motivation to obtain a general version of the duality principle in Gabor analysis. For tight Gabor frames and Gabor Riesz bases the three authors were actually able to show that the duality principle is a special case of general results for R-duals. In this paper we introduce various alternative R-duals, with focus on what we call R-duals of type II and III. We show how they are related and provide characterizations of the R-duals of type II and III. In particular, we prove that for tight frames…
We obtain Gabor frame characterisations of modulation spaces defined via a class of translation-modulation invariant Banach spaces of distributions that was recently introduced in $[10]$. We show that these spaces admit an atomic decomposition through Gabor expansions and that they are characterised by summability properties of their Gabor coefficients. Furthermore, we construct a large space of admissible windows. This generalises several fundamental results for the classical modulation spaces $ M^{p,q}_{w}$. Due to the absence of solidity assumptions on the Banach spaces defining these modul…
We prove stability results for a class of Gabor frames in $ L^2(\R)$. We consider window functions in the Sobolev spaces $H^1_0(\R)$ and B-splines of order $p\ge 1$. Our results can be used to describe the effect of the timing jitters in the $p$-order hold models of signal reconstruction.
We show that $(g_2,a,b)$ is a Gabor frame when $a>0, b>0, ab<1$ and $g_2(t)=({1/2}πγ)^{1/2} (\cosh πγt)^{-1}$ is a hyperbolic secant with scaling parameter $γ>0$. This is accomplished by expressing the Zak transform of $g_2$ in terms of the Zak transform of the Gaussian $g_1(t)=(2γ)^{1/4} \exp (-πγt^2)$, together with an appropriate use of the Ron-Shen criterion for being a Gabor frame. As a side result it follows that the windows, generating tight Gabor frames, that are canonically associated to $g_2$ and $g_1$ are the same at critical density $a=b=1$. Also, we display the ``singular'' dual f…
The main purpose of the paper is to give a characterization of all compactly supported dual windows of a Gabor frame. As an application, we consider an iterative procedure for approximation of the canonical dual window via compactly supported dual windows on every step. In particular, the procedure allows to have approximation of the canonical dual window via dual windows from certain modulation spaces or from the Schwartz space.
Gabor frames have interested many mathematicians and physicists due to their potential applications in time-frequency analysis, in particular, signal processing. A Gabor system is a collection of vectors which is obtained by applying modulation and shift operators to non-zero functions in signal spaces. In many applications, for example, signal processing related to Gabor systems, the corresponding shifts may not be uniform. That is, the set associated with shifts may not be a group under usual addition. We analyze discrete vector-valued nonuniform Gabor frames (DVNUG frames, in short) in disc…
Every (full) finite Gabor system generated by a unit-norm vector $g\in \mathbb{C}^d$ is a finite unit-norm tight frame (FUNTF), and can thus be associated with a (Gabor) positive operator valued measure (POVM). Such a POVM is informationally complete if the $d^2$ corresponding rank one matrices form a basis for the space of $d\times d$ matrices. A sufficient condition for this to happen is that the POVM is symmetric, which is equivalent to the fact that the associated Gabor frame is an equiangular tight frame (ETF). The existence of Gabor ETF is an important special case of the Zauner conjectu…
Let $\mathbb{H}$ be a separable Hilbert space. In this paper we establish a generalization of Walnut's representation and Janssen's representation of the $\mathbb{H}-$valued Gabor frame operator on $\mathbb{H}-$valued weighted amalgam spaces $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^p,L^q_v)$, $1 \leq p, q \leq \infty$. Also we show that the frame operator is invertible on $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^p,L^q_v)$, $1 \leq p, q \leq \infty$, if the window function is in the Wiener amalgam space $W_{\mathbb{H}}(L^{\infty},L^1_w)$. Further, we obtain the Walnut representation and invertibility of the frame operator corresponding to …
This survey offers a systematic and streamlined exposition of the most important characterizations of Gabor frames over a lattice. The goal is to collect the most important characterizations of Gabor frames and offer a systematic exposition of these structures. In the center of these characterizations is the duality theorem for Gabor frames. Most characterizations within the $L^2$-theory follow directly from this fundamental duality. In particular, the celebrated characterizations of Janssen and Ron-Shen are consequences of the duality theorem, and the characterization of Zeevi and Zibulski fo…
Certain signal classes such as audio signals call for signal representations with the ability to adapt to the signal's properties. In this article we introduce the new concept of quilted frames, which aim at adaptivity in time-frequency representations. As opposed to Gabor or wavelet frames, this new class of frames allows for the adaptation of the signal analysis to the local requirements of signals under consideration. Quilted frames are constructed directly in the time-frequency domain in a signal-adaptive manner. Validity of the frame property guarantees the possibility to reconstruct the …
We give a construction of Gabor type frames for suitable separable subspaces of the non-separable Hilbert spaces $AP_2({\mathbb R})$ of almost periodic functions of one variable. Furthermore we determine a non-countable generalized frame for the whole space $AP_2({\mathbb R}).$ We show furthermore that Bessel-type estimates hold for the $AP$ norm with respect to a countable Gabor system using suitable almost periodic norms of sequencies.
We show the full structure of the frame set for the Gabor system $\mathcal{G}(g;α,β):=\{e^{-2πi mβ\cdot}g(\cdot-nα):m,n\in\Bbb Z\}$ with the window being the Haar function $g=-χ_{[-1/2,0)}+χ_{[0,1/2)}$. The strategy of this paper is to introduce the piecewise linear transformation $\mathcal{M}$ on the unit circle, and to provide a complete characterization of structures for its (symmetric) maximal invariant sets. This transformation is related to the famous three gap theorem of Steinhaus which may be of independent interest. Furthermore, a classical criterion on Gabor frames is improved, which…
In this paper, we introduce Gabor shearlets, a variant of shearlet systems, which are based on a different group representation than previous shearlet constructions: they combine elements from Gabor and wavelet frames in their construction. As a consequence, they can be implemented with standard filters from wavelet theory in combination with standard Gabor windows. Unlike the usual shearlets, the new construction can achieve a redundancy as close to one as desired. Our construction follows the general strategy for shearlets. First we define group-based Gabor shearlets and then modify them to …
For a second countable locally compact abelian (LCA) group $G$, we study some necessary and sufficient conditions to generate continuous Gabor frames for $L^{2}(G)$. To this end, we reformulate the generalized Zak transform proposed by Grochenig in the case of integer-oversampled lattices, however our formulation rely on the assumption that both translation and modulation groups are only closed subgroups. Moreover, we discuss the possibility of such generalization and apply several examples to demonestrate the necessity of standing conditions in the results. Finally, by using the generalized Z…
We prove some infinite series identities for the Hermite functions. From these identities we disprove the Gabor frame set conjecture for Hermite functions of order $4m+2$ and $4m+3$ for $m \in \{0\} \cup \mathbb{N}$. The results hold not only for Hermite functions, but for two large classes of eigenfunctions of the Fourier transform associated with the eigenvalues $-1$ and $i$, and the results indicate that the Gabor frame set of all such functions must have a rather complicated structure.
We study sharp frame bounds of Gabor frames with the standard Gaussian window and prove that the square lattice optimizes both the lower and the upper frame bound among all rectangular lattices. This proves a conjecture of Floch, Alard & Berrou (as reformulated by Strohmer & Beaver). The proof is based on refined log-convexity/concavity estimates for the Jacobi theta functions $θ_3$ and $θ_4$.
Partition of unities appear in many places in analysis. Typically they are generated by compactly supported functions with a certain regularity. In this paper we consider partition of unities obtained as integer-translates of entire functions restricted to finite intervals. We characterize the entire functions that lead to a partition of unity in this way, and we provide characterizations of the "cut-off" entire functions, considered as functions of a real variable, to have desired regularity. In particular we obtain partition of unities generated by functions with small support and desired re…
Hilbert space fusion frames are a natural extension of Hilbert space frames, extending the notion from a set of vectors in a Hilbert space to a set of subspaces of a Hilbert space with analogous notions of overcompleteness and boundedness. As tight frames are a very important topic within standard frame theory, tight fusion frames are similarly important; however, only trivial examples of tight fusion frames are hitherto known. In this paper, we apply ideas from Gabor analysis to demonstrate a non-trivial construction of tight fusion frames. We then use this construction to further show their …
Let $g$ be a totally positive function of finite type. Then the Gabor set $\{e^{2πi βl t} g(t-αk), k,l \in Z \}$ is a frame for $L^2(R)$, if and only if $αβ<1$. This result is a first positive contribution to a conjecture of I.\ Daubechies from 1990. So far the complete characterization of lattice parameters $α, β$ that generate a frame has been known for only six window functions $g$. Our main result now provides an uncountable class of functions. As a byproduct of the proof method we derive new sampling theorems in shift-invariant spaces and obtain the correct Nyquist rate.
For a class of compactly supported windows we characterize the frame property for a Gabor system $\mts,$ for translation parameters $a$ belonging to a certain range depending on the support size. We show that the obstructions to the frame property are located on a countable number of "curves." For functions that are positive on the interior of the support these obstructions do not appear, and the considered region in the $(a,b)$ plane is fully contained in the frame set. In particular this confirms a recent conjecture about B-splines by Gröchenig in that particular region. We prove that the fu…
