We describe a satisfactory theory of degeneration of quadratic forms in three variables in the most general setting possible: the quadratic forms are defined on rank 3 vector bundles over an arbitrary scheme and could have values in nontrivial line bundles. Our results extend what is known for good forms; for example we show that the Witt-invariant suffices for classification. We determine explicitly the general, special and usual orthogonal groups and present applications. We indicate examples of rank 4 vector bundles that do not admit any Azumaya structures and of rank 3 vector bundles that do not admit any good quadratic forms with values in specified line bundles. These examples occur naturally on the Seshadri-desingularisations of moduli spaces of rank two degree zero vector bundles over a curve relative to an integral normal locally-Nagata (universally Japanese) base scheme.
In this article, we provide an overview of a one-to-one correspondence between representations of the generalized Clifford algebra $C_f$ of a ternary cubic form $f$ and certain vector bundles (called Ulrich bundles) on a cubic surface $X$. We study general properties of Ulrich bundles, and using a recent classification of Casanellas and Hartshorne, deduce the existence of irreducible representations of $C_f$ of every possible dimension.
We show how one can use the representation theory of ternary quartics to construct all vector-valued Siegel modular forms and Teichmüller modular forms of degree 3. The relation between the order of vanishing of a concomitant on the locus of double conics and the order of vanishing of the corresponding modular form on the hyperelliptic locus plays an important role. We also determine the connection between Teichmüller cusp forms on \overline{M}_g and the middle cohomology of symplectic local systems on M_g. In genus 3, we make this explicit in a large number of cases.
Ternary real-valued quartics in $\mathbb{R}^3$ being invariant under octahedral symmetry are considered. The geometric classification of these surfaces is given. A new type of surfaces emerge from this classification.
We prove that two general ternary forms are simultaneously identifiable only in the classical cases of two quadratic and a cubic and a quadratic form. We translate the problem into the study of a certain linear system on a projective bundle on the plane, and we apply techniques from projective and birational geometry to prove that the associated map is not birational.
We provide a formula describing the G-module structure of the Hurwitz-Hodge bundle for admissible G-covers in terms of the Hodge bundle of the base curve, and more generally, for describing the G-module structure of the push-forward to the base of any sheaf on a family of admissible G-covers. This formula can be interpreted as a representation-ring-valued relative Riemann-Hurwitz formula for families of admissible G-covers.
We use a sheaf-theoretic approach to obtain a blow-up formula for Dolbeault cohomology groups with values in the holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold. As applications, we present several positive (or negative) examples associated to the vanishing theorems of Girbau, Kawamata-Viehweg and Green-Lazarsfeld in a uniform manner and study the blow-up invariance of some classical holomorphic invariants.
In this paper, we study questions of Demailly and Matsumura on the asymptotic behavior of dimensions of cohomology groups for high tensor powers of (nef) pseudo-effective line bundles over non-necessarily projective algebraic manifolds. By generalizing Siu's $\partial\overline{\partial}$-formula and Berndtsson's eigenvalue estimate of $\overline{\partial}$-Laplacian and combining Bonavero's technique, we obtain the following result: given a holomorphic pseudo-effective line bundle $(L, h_L)$ on a compact Hermitian manifold $(X,ω)$, if $h_L$ is a singular metric with algebraic singularities, th…
Scheme-theoretic methods are used to classify ternary quadratic forms with values in line bundles over arbitrary schemes and to canonically determine the isomorphisms between them. The association of a quadratic bundle to its even Clifford algebra induces a natural bijection from the set of equivalence classes of line-bundle-valued quadratic forms on rank 3 vector bundles upto tensoring by twisted discriminant bundles and the set of isomorphism classes of schematic specialisations of rank 4 Azumaya bundles over any fixed scheme X. This statement is a limiting version of the following statement…
This paper examines a number of related questions about Euler characteristics and characteristic classes with values in Witt cohomology. We establish a motivic version of the Becker-Gottllieb transfer, generalizing a construction of Hoyois. Ananyevskiy's splitting principle reduces questions about characteristic classes of vector bundles in $\text{SL}$-oriented, $η$-invertible theories to the case of rank two bundles. We refine the torus-normalizer splitting principle for $\text{SL}_2$ to help compute the characteristic classes in Witt cohomology of symmetric powers of a rank two bundle, and t…

We introduce vector bundle techniques for finding equations of secant varieties. A test is established that determines when a secant variety is an irreducible component of the zero set of the equations found. We also prove an induction theorem for varieties that are not weakly defective, that allows one to conclude that the zero set of the equations found for s_{r-1}(X) have s_{r-1}(X) as an irreducible component when s_r(X) is an irreducible component of the equations found for it. The techniques are illustrated with examples of homogeneous varieties. We give an algorithm to decompose a gener…
A natural and important question of study two-valued groups associated with hyperelliptic Jacobians and their relationship with integrable systems is motivated by seminal examples of relationship between algebraic two-valued groups related to elliptic curves and integrable systems such as elliptic billiards and celebrated Kowalevski top. The present paper is devoted to the case of genus 2, to the investigation of algebraic two-valued group structures on Kummer varieties. One of our approaches is based on the theory of $σ$-functions. It enables us to study the dependence of parameters of the cu…
Massless modes of both heterotic and Type II string compactifications on compact manifolds are determined by vector bundle valued cohomology classes. Various applications of our recent algorithm for the computation of line bundle valued cohomology classes over toric varieties are presented. For the heterotic string, the prime examples are so-called monad constructions on Calabi-Yau manifolds. In the context of Type II orientifolds, one often needs to compute equivariant cohomology for line bundles, necessitating us to generalize our algorithm to this case. Moreover, we exemplify that the diffe…
Let $C$ be an algebraic curve of genus $g$ and $L$ a line bundle over $C$. Let $\mathcal{MS}_C(n,L)$ and $\mathcal{MO}_C(n,L)$ be the moduli spaces of $L$-valued symplectic and orthogonal bundles respectively, over $C$ of rank $n$. We construct rational curves on these moduli spaces which generalize Hecke curves on the moduli space of vector bundles. As a main result, we show that these Hecke type curves have the minimal degree among the rational curves passing through a general point of the moduli spaces. As its byproducts, we show the non-abelian Torelli theorem and compute the automorphism …
We present a proof of the algorithm for computing line bundle valued cohomology classes over toric varieties conjectured by R.~Blumenhagen, B.~Jurke and the authors (arXiv:1003.5217) and suggest a kind of Serre duality for combinatorial Betti numbers that we observed when computing examples.
We present an algorithm for computing line bundle valued cohomology classes over toric varieties. This is the basic starting point for computing massless modes in both heterotic and Type IIB/F-theory compactifications, where the manifolds of interest are complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric varieties supporting additional vector bundles.
This paper presents the theory of holomorphic vector valued modular forms from a geometric perspective. More precisely, we define certain holomorphic vector bundles on the modular orbifold of generalized elliptic curves whose sections are vector valued modular forms. This perspective simplifies the theory, and it clarifies the role that exponents of representations of SL_2(Z) play in the holomorphic theory of vector valued modular forms. Further, it allows one to use standard techniques in algebraic geometry to deduce free-module theorems and dimension formulae (deduced previously by other aut…
For a projective variety $X$ defined over a non-Archimedean complete non-trivially valued field $k$, and a semipositive metrized line bundle $(L, ϕ)$ over it, we establish a metric extension result for sections of $L^{\otimes n}$ from a sub-variety $Y$ to $X$. We form normed section algebras from $(L, ϕ)$ and study their Berkovich spectra. To compare the supremum algebra norm and the quotient algebra norm on the restricted section algebra $V(L_{X|Y})$, two different methods are used: one exploits the holomorphic convexity of the spectrum, following an argument of Grauert; another relies on fin…
Grothendieck-Birkhoff Theorem states that every finite dimensional vector bundle over the projective line splits as the sum of one dimensional vector bundles. In this work we study simultaneous splittings of two dimensional vector bundles over a finite field using the theory of Eichler orders. In the sheaf-theoretical context, an Eichler order in a matrix algebra is the intersection of the sheaves of endomorphisms of two vector bundles, so characterizing split Eichler orders solves the problem of simultaneous splitting. We caracterize both the genera of Eichler orders containing only split Eic…
Merkurjev's theorem--the statement that the 2-torsion of the Brauer group is represented by Clifford algebras of quadratic forms--is in general false when the base is no longer a field. The work of Parimala, Scharlau, and Sridharan proves the existence of smooth complete curves over local fields, over which Merkurjev's theorem is equivalent to the existence of a rational theta characteristic. Here, we prove that for smooth curves over a local field or surfaces over a finite field, replacing the Witt group by the total Witt group of all line bundle-valued quadratic forms recovers Merkurjev's th…
