On complete, non-compact manifolds and infinite graphs, Faber-Krahn inequalities have been used to estimate the rate of decay of the heat kernel. We develop this technique in the setting of finite Markov chains, proving upper and lower mixing time bounds via the spectral profile. This approach lets us recover and refine previous conductance-based bounds of mixing time (including the Morris-Peres result), and in general leads to sharper estimates of convergence rates. We apply this method to several models including groups with moderate growth, the fractal-like Viscek graphs, and the torus, to obtain tight bounds on the corresponding mixing times.
For birth and death chains, we derive bounds on the spectral gap and mixing time in terms of birth and death rates. Together with the results of Ding et al. in 2010, this provides a criterion for the existence of a cutoff in terms of the birth and death rates. A variety of illustrative examples are treated.
We give a bound on the mixing time of a uniformly ergodic, reversible Markov chain in terms of the spectral radius of the transition operator. This bound has been established previously in finite state spaces, and is widely believed to hold in general state spaces, but a proof has not been provided to our knowledge.
We give asymptotic spectral results for Gram matrices of the form $ n^{-1}\mathcal{X}_n \mathcal{X}_n^T$ where the entries of $\mathcal{X}_n$ are dependent across both rows and columns. More precisely, they consist of short or long range dependent random variables having moments of second order and that are functionals of an absolutely regular sequence. We also give a concentration inequality of the Stieltjes transform and we prove that, under an arithmetical decay condition on the $β$-mixing coefficients, it is almost surely concentrated around its expectation. Applications to examples of pos…
We examine the spectral profile bound of Goel, Montenegro and Tetali for the uniform mixing time of continuous-time random walk in reversible settings. We find that it is precise up to a log log factor, and that this log log factor cannot be improved.
We prove an upper bound on the total variation mixing time of a finite Markov chain in terms of the absolute spectral gap and the number of elements in the state space. Unlike results requiring reversibility or irreducibility, this bound is finite whenever the chain converges. The dependence on the number of elements means that the new bound cannot capture the behavior of rapidly mixing chains; but an example shows that such dependence is necessary. We also provide a sharpened result for reversible chains that are not necessarily irreducible. The proof of the general bound exploits a connectio…
We use coupling ideas introduced in \cite{levine2018long} to show that an IDLA process on a cylinder graph $G\times \mathbb{Z}$ forgets a typical initial profile in $\mathcal{O}( N\sqrt{τ_N} (\log \! N)^2 )$ steps for large $N$, where $N$ is the size of the base graph $G$, and $τ_N$ is the total variation mixing time of a simple random walk on $G$. The main new ingredient is a maximal fluctuations bound for IDLA on $G\times \mathbb{Z}$ which only relies on the mixing properties of the base graph $G$ and the Abelian property.
We extend the notion of spectral independence (introduced by Anari, Liu, and Oveis Gharan [ALO20]) from the Boolean domain to general discrete domains. This property characterises distributions with limited correlations, and implies that the corresponding Glauber dynamics is rapidly mixing. As a concrete application, we show that Glauber dynamics for sampling proper $q$-colourings mixes in polynomial-time for the family of triangle-free graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ provided $q\ge (α^*+δ)Δ$ where $α^*\approx 1.763$ is the unique solution to $α^*=\exp(1/α^*)$ and $δ>0$ is any constant. This is…
We prove that Ising models on the hypercube with general quadratic interactions satisfy a Poincaré inequality with respect to the natural Dirichlet form corresponding to Glauber dynamics, as soon as the operator norm of the interaction matrix is smaller than $1$. The inequality implies a control on the mixing time of the Glauber dynamics. Our techniques rely on a localization procedure which establishes a structural result, stating that Ising measures may be decomposed into a mixture of measures with quadratic potentials of rank one, and provides a framework for proving concentration bounds fo…
We prove an optimal $Ω(n^{-1})$ lower bound on the spectral gap of Glauber dynamics for anti-ferromagnetic two-spin systems with $n$ vertices in the tree uniqueness regime. This spectral gap holds for all, including unbounded, maximum degree $Δ$. Consequently, we have the following mixing time bounds for the models satisfying the uniqueness condition with a slack $δ\in(0,1)$: $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2\log n$ mixing time for the hardcore model with fugacity $λ\le (1-δ)λ_c(Δ)= (1-δ)\frac{(Δ- 1)^{Δ- 1}}{(Δ- 2)^Δ}$; $\bullet$ $C(δ) n^2$ mixing time for the Ising model with edge activity $β\in\left[\frac…
We present an overview of the representation theoretic techniques used to study the mixing times of random walks on finite groups. We focus on the card shuffle studied by Diaconis and Shahshahani in the 1980s and a recent improvement on their result by Teyssier
The spectral independence approach of Anari et al. (2020) utilized recent results on high-dimensional expanders of Alev and Lau (2020) and established rapid mixing of the Glauber dynamics for the hard-core model defined on weighted independent sets. We develop the spectral independence approach for colorings, and obtain new algorithmic results for the corresponding counting/sampling problems. Let $α^*\approx 1.763$ denote the solution to $\exp(1/x)=x$ and let $α>α^*$. We prove that, for any triangle-free graph $G=(V,E)$ with maximum degree $Δ$, for all $q\geqαΔ+1$, the mixing time of the Glaub…
We establish the first polynomial upper bound for the mixing time of random edge flips on rooted quadrangulations: we show that the spectral gap of the edge flip Markov chain on quadrangulations with $n$ faces admits, up to constants, an upper bound of $n^{-5/4}$ and a lower bound of $n^{-11/2}$. In order to obtain the lower bound, we also consider a very natural Markov chain on plane trees (or, equivalently, on Dyck paths) and improve the previous lower bound for its spectral gap obtained by Shor and Movassagh.
Let $g$, $h$ be a random pair of generators of $G=Sym(n)$ or $G=Alt(n)$. We show that, with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to \infty$, (a) the diameter of $G$ with respect to $S = \{g,h,g^{-1},h^{-1}\}$ is at most $O(n^2 (\log n)^c)$, and (b) the mixing time of $G$ with respect to $S$ is at most $O(n^3 (\log n)^c)$. (Both $c$ and the implied constants are absolute.) These bounds are far lower than the strongest worst-case bounds known (in Helfgott--Seress, 2013); they roughly match the worst known examples. We also give an improved, though still non-constant, bound on the spectral gap. Our r…
We prove that the spectral gap of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the random-cluster model on arbitrary graphs with m edges is bounded above by 16 m log m times the spectral gap of the single-bond (or heat-bath) dynamics. This and the corresponding lower bound imply that rapid mixing of these two dynamics is equivalent. Using the known lower bound on the spectral gap of the Swendsen-Wang dynamics for the two dimensional square lattice $Z_L^2$ of side length L at high temperatures and a result for the single-bond dynamics on dual graphs, we obtain rapid mixing of both dynamics on $\Z_L^2$ at all…
For general spin systems, we prove that a contractive coupling for any local Markov chain implies optimal bounds on the mixing time and the modified log-Sobolev constant for a large class of Markov chains including the Glauber dynamics, arbitrary heat-bath block dynamics, and the Swendsen-Wang dynamics. This reveals a novel connection between probabilistic techniques for bounding the convergence to stationarity and analytic tools for analyzing the decay of relative entropy. As a corollary of our general results, we obtain $O(n\log{n})$ mixing time and $Ω(1/n)$ modified log-Sobolev constant of …
For the multi-particle Anderson model with correlated random potential in the continuum, we show under fairly general assumptions on the inter-particle interaction and the random external potential, the Anderson localization which consists of both the spectral, exponential localization and the strong dynamical localization. The localization results are proven near the lower spectral edge of the almost sure spectrum and the proofs require the uniform log-Hölder continuity assumption of the probability distribution functions of the random field in addition of the Rosenblatt's strongly mixing con…
We prove comparison results for the Swendsen-Wang (SW) dynamics, the heat-bath (HB) dynamics for the Potts model and the single-bond (SB) dynamics for the random-cluster model on arbitrary graphs. In particular, we prove that rapid mixing of HB implies rapid mixing of SW on graphs with bounded maximum degree and that rapid mixing of SW and rapid mixing of SB are equivalent. Additionally, the spectral gap of SW and SB on planar graphs is bounded from above and from below by the spectral gap of these dynamics on the corresponding dual graph with suitably changed temperature. As a consequence we …
