We prove that for all $0\leq t\leq k$ and $d\geq 2k$, every graph $G$ with treewidth at most $k$ has a `large' induced subgraph $H$, where $H$ has treewidth at most $t$ and every vertex in $H$ has degree at most $d$ in $G$. The order of $H$ depends on $t$, $k$, $d$, and the order of $G$. With $t=k$, we obtain large sets of bounded degree vertices. With $t=0$, we obtain large independent sets of bounded degree. In both these cases, our bounds on the order of $H$ are tight. For bounded degree independent sets in trees, we characterise the extremal graphs. Finally, we prove that an interval graph with maximum clique size $k$ has a maximum independent set in which every vertex has degree at most $2k$.
A long-standing conjecture asserts that there exists a constant $c>0$ such that every graph of order $n$ without isolated vertices contains an induced subgraph of order at least $cn$ with all degrees odd. Scott (1992) proved that every graph $G$ has an induced subgraph of order at least $|V(G)|/(2χ(G))$ with all degrees odd, where $χ(G)$ is the chromatic number of $G$, this implies the conjecture for graphs with { bounded} chromatic number. But the factor $1/(2χ(G))$ seems to be not best possible, for example, Radcliffe and Scott (1995) proved $c=\frac 23$ for trees, Berman, Wang and Wargo (19…
A theta is a graph consisting of two non-adjacent vertices and three internally disjoint paths between them, each of length at least two. For a family $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, we say a graph $G$ is $\mathcal{H}$-free if no induced subgraph of $G$ is isomorphic to a member of $\mathcal{H}$. We prove a conjecture of Sintiari and Trotignon, that there exists an absolute constant $c$ for which every (theta, triangle)-free graph $G$ has treewidth at most $c\log (|V(G)|)$. A construction by Sintiari and Trotignon shows that this bound is asymptotically best possible, and (theta, triangle)-free graph…
We show that for any fixed integer $m \geq 1$, a graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has a coloring with $O(Δ^{(m+1)/m})$ colors in which every connected bicolored subgraph contains at most $m$ edges. This result unifies previously known upper bounds on the number of colors sufficient for certain types of graph colorings, including star colorings, for which $O(Δ^{3/2})$ colors suffice, and acyclic colorings, for which $O(Δ^{4/3})$ colors suffice. Our proof uses a probabilistic method of Alon, McDiarmid, and Reed. This result also gives previously unknown upper bounds, including the fact that a graph o…
We show that many graphs with bounded treewidth can be described as subgraphs of the strong product of a graph with smaller treewidth and a bounded-size complete graph. To this end, define the "underlying treewidth" of a graph class $\mathcal{G}$ to be the minimum non-negative integer $c$ such that, for some function $f$, for every graph ${G \in \mathcal{G}}$ there is a graph $H$ with ${\text{tw}(H) \leq c}$ such that $G$ is isomorphic to a subgraph of ${H \boxtimes K_{f(\text{tw}(G))}}$. We introduce disjointed coverings of graphs and show they determine the underlying treewidth of any graph …
A circle graph is an intersection graph of a set of chords of a circle. We describe the unavoidable induced subgraphs of circle graphs with large treewidth. This includes examples that are far from the `usual suspects'. Our results imply that treewidth and Hadwiger number are linearly tied on the class of circle graphs, and that the unavoidable induced subgraphs of a vertex-minor-closed class with large treewidth are the usual suspects if and only if the class has bounded rank-width. Using the same tools, we also study the treewidth of graphs $G$ that have a circular drawing whose crossing gra…
Let Q_n be the graph of n times n times n cube with all non-decreasing diagonals (including the facial ones) in its constituent unit cubes. Suppose that a subset S of V(Q_n) separates the left side of the cube from the right side. We show that S induces a subgraph of tree-width at least n/sqrt{18}-1. We use a generalization of this claim to prove that the vertex set of Q_n cannot be partitioned to two parts, each of them inducing a subgraph of bounded tree-width.
A graph class $\mathcal{G}$ has linear growth if, for each graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ and every positive integer $r$, every subgraph of $G$ with radius at most $r$ contains $O(r)$ vertices. In this paper, we show that every graph class with linear growth has bounded treewidth.
Dujmović, Joret, Micek, Morin, Ueckerdt, and Wood [J. ACM 2020] established that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a graph with bounded treewidth and a path. Motivated by this result, this paper systematically studies various structural properties of cartesian, direct and strong products. In particular, we characterise when these graph products contain a given complete multipartite subgraph, determine tight bounds for their degeneracy, establish new lower bounds for the treewidth of cartesian and strong products, and characterise when they have bounded treewidth and whe…
Aboulker, Adler, Kim, Sintiari, and Trotignon conjectured that every graph with bounded maximum degree and large treewidth must contain, as an induced subgraph, a large subdivided wall, or the line graph of a large subdivided wall. This conjecture was recently proved by Korhonen, but the problem of identifying the obstacles to bounded treewidth in the general case (that is, without the bounded maximum degree condition) remains wide open. Examples of structures of large treewidth which avoid the "usual suspects" have been constructed by Sintiari and Trotignon, and by Davies. In this note, we ai…
We prove that if every subgraph of a graph $G$ has a balanced separation of order at most $a$ then $G$ has treewidth at most $15a$. This establishes a linear dependence between the treewidth and the separation number.
The clustered chromatic number of a graph class is the minimum integer $t$ such that for some $C$ the vertices of every graph in the class can be colored in $t$ colors so that every monochromatic component has size at most $C$. We show that the clustered chromatic number of the class of graphs embeddable on a given surface is four, proving the conjecture of Esperet and Ochem. Additionally, we study the list version of the concept and characterize the minor-closed classes of graphs of bounded treewidth with given clustered list chromatic number. We further strengthen the above results to solve …
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. Let $w$ be a positive integer. A $w$-dominating set is a vertex subset $S$ such that for all $v\in V$, either $v\in S$ or it has at least $w$ neighbors in $S$. The $w$-Dominating Set problem is to find the minimum $w$-dominating set. The $L$-Max $w$-Dominating Set problem is to find the vertex subset $S$ of cardinality at most $L$ that maximizes $|S|+|\{v\in V\setminus S~|~|N(v)\cap S|\geq w\}|$, where $N(v)=\{u|uv\in E\}$. In this paper, we give polynomial time algorithms to $w$-Dominating Set problem and $L$-Max $w$-Dominating Set problem on graphs of bounded treewi…
This paper establishes sufficient conditions that force a graph to contain a bipartite subgraph with a given structural property. In particular, let $β$ be any of the following graph parameters: Hadwiger number, Hajós number, treewidth, pathwidth, and treedepth. In each case, we show that there exists a function $f$ such that every graph $G$ with $β(G)\geq f(k)$ contains a bipartite subgraph $\hat{G}\subseteq G$ with $β(\hat{G})\geq k$.

On giant components and treewidth in the layers model
For a fixed graph $H$, the $H$-IS-Deletion problem asks, given a graph $G$, for the minimum size of a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ such that $G\setminus S$ does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. Motivated by previous work about hitting (topological) minors and subgraphs on bounded treewidth graphs, we are interested in determining, for a fixed graph $H$, the smallest function $f_H(t)$ such that $H$-IS-Deletion can be solved in time $f_H(t) \cdot n^{O(1)}$ assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH), where $t$ and $n$ denote the treewidth and the number of vertices of the input graph, respec…
In 1977, Trotter and Moore proved that a poset has dimension at most $3$ whenever its cover graph is a forest, or equivalently, has treewidth at most $1$. On the other hand, a well-known construction of Kelly shows that there are posets of arbitrarily large dimension whose cover graphs have treewidth $3$. In this paper we focus on the boundary case of treewidth $2$. It was recently shown that the dimension is bounded if the cover graph is outerplanar (Felsner, Trotter, and Wiechert) or if it has pathwidth $2$ (Biró, Keller, and Young). This can be interpreted as evidence that the dimension sho…
Exact counting of Euler Tours for Graphs of Bounded Treewidth
本文给出了一个简单的多项式时间算法来精确计算任意树宽有界的欧拉图的欧拉圈数。已知对于一般的图,计数k的问题是#P-完全的(Brightwell and Winkler,(Brightwell and Winkler,2005))。到目前为止,没有多项式时间算法计数欧拉旅游的任何一类图是已知的,除了非常特殊的情况下,串并行图(其中有树宽2)。
In 2019, Dvořák asked whether every connected graph $G$ has a tree decomposition $(T, \mathcal{B})$ so that $T$ is a subgraph of $G$ and the width of $(T, \mathcal{B})$ is bounded by a function of the treewidth of $G$. We prove that this is false, even when $G$ has treewidth $2$ and $T$ is allowed to be a minor of $G$.
A graph $G$ is Ramsey for a graph $H$ if every 2-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We consider the following question: if $H$ has bounded treewidth, is there a `sparse' graph $G$ that is Ramsey for $H$? Two notions of sparsity are considered. Firstly, we show that if the maximum degree and treewidth of $H$ are bounded, then there is a graph $G$ with $O(|V(H)|)$ edges that is Ramsey for $H$. This was previously only known for the smaller class of graphs $H$ with bounded bandwidth. On the other hand, we prove that the treewidth of a graph $G$ that is Ramsey for …
We give polynomial-time approximation schemes for monotone maximization problems expressible in terms of distances (up to a fixed upper bound) and efficiently solvable in graphs of bounded treewidth. These schemes apply in all fractionally treewidth-fragile graph classes, a property that is true for many natural graph classes with sublinear separators. We also provide quasipolynomial-time approximation schemes for these problems in all classes with sublinear separators.
