We define a notion of Property (T) for an arbitrary $C^*$-algebra $A$ admitting a tracial state. We extend this to a notion of Property (T) for the pair $(A,B),$ where $B$ is a $C^*$-subalgebra of $A.$ Let $Γ$ be a discrete group and $C^*_r(Γ)$ its reduced algebra. We show that $C^*_r(Γ)$ has Property (T) if and only if the group $Γ$ has Property (T) . More generally, given a subgroup $Λ$ of $Γ$, the pair $(C^*_r(Γ),C^*_r(Λ))$ has Property (T) if and only if the pair of groups $(Γ, Λ)$ has Property (T).
We prove that the notion of relative property (T) (or rigidity) for inclusions of finite von Neumann algebras defined in [Po1] is equivalent to a weaker property, in which no ``continuity constants'' are required. The proof is by contradiction and uses infinite products of completely positive maps, regarded as correspondences.
Certain operator algebras A on a Hilbert space have the property that every densely defined linear transformation commuting with A is closable. Such algebras are said to have the closability property. They are important in the study of the transitive algebra problem. More precisely, if A is a two-transitive algebra with the closability property, then A is dense in the algebra of all bounded operators, in the weak operator topology. In this paper we focus on algebras generated by a completely nonunitary contraction, and produce several new classes of algebras with the closability property. We s…
Inspired by the recent work of Bekka, we study two reasonable analogues of property (T) for not necessarily unital C*-algebras. The stronger one of the two is called ``property (T)'' and the weaker one is called ``property (T_{e})''. It is shown that all non-unital C*-algebras do not have property (T) (neither do their unitalizations). Moreover, all non-unital $σ$-unital C*-algebras do not have property (T_e).
In this paper, we will give a thorough study of the notion of Property $(T)$ for $C^*$-algebras (as introduced by M.B. Bekka in \cite{Bek-T}) as well as a slight stronger version of it, called "strong property $(T)$" (which is also an analogue of the corresponding concept in the case of discrete groups and type $\rm II_1$-factors). More precisely, we will give some interesting equivalent formulations as well as some permanence properties for both property $(T)$ and strong property $(T)$. We will also relate them to certain $(T)$-type properties of the unitary group of the underlying $C^*$-alge…
Various notions of joint majorization are examined in continuous matrix algebras. The relative strengths of these notions are established via proofs and examples. In addition, the closed convex hulls of joint unitary orbits are completely characterized in continuous matrix algebras via notions of joint majorization. Some of these characterizations are extended to subhomogeneous C$^*$-algebras.
The notion of Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra generalizes the notion of $C^*$-algebra. In this paper, we first present some definitions and basic facts about locally $C^*$-algebra, and then we introduce and study the notion of ideal and weak amenability for these algebras. Also, we show that every Fréchet locally $C^*$-algebra is ideally amenable.
An operator algebra $\mathcal{A}$ acting on a Hilbert space is said to have the closability property if every densely defined linear transformation commuting with $\mathcal{A}$ is closable. In this paper we study the closability property of the von Neumann algebra consisting of the multiplication operators on $L^2(μ)$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for a normal operator $N$ such that the von Neumann algebra generated by $N$ has the closability property. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for an operator $T$ of class $C_0$ such that the algebra generated by $T$ in t…
We introduce a natural generalization of the Haagerup property of a finite von Neumann algebra to an arbitrary von Neumann algebra (with a separable predual) equipped with a normal, semi-finite, faithful weight and prove that this property does not depend on the choice of the weight. In particular this defines the Haagerup property as an intrinsic invariant of the von Neumann algebra. We also show that such a generalized Haagerup property is preserved under taking crossed products by actions of amenable locally compact groups. Our results are motivated by recent examples from the theory of dis…
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the alternative Daugavet property if for every (bounded and linear) rank-one operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$ there exists a modulus one scalar $ω$ such that $\|Id + ωT\|= 1 + \|T\|$. We give geometric characterizations of this property in the setting of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples and their isometric preduals.
A Banach space $X$ is said to have the Daugavet property if every rank-one operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$ satisfies $\|Id + T\| = 1 + \|T\|$. We give geometric characterizations of this property in the settings of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples and their isometric preduals. We also show that, in these settings, the Daugavet property passes to ultrapowers, and thus, it is equivalent to an stronger property called the uniform Daugavet property.
A $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ has ideal property if any ideal $I$ of $A$ is generated as a closed two sided ideal by the projections inside the ideal. Suppose that the limit $C^{*}$-algebra $A$ of inductive limit of direct sums of matrix algebras over spaces with uniformly bounded dimension has ideal property. In this paper, we will prove that $A$ can be written as an inductive limit of certain very special subhomogeneous algebras, namely, direct sum of dimension drop interval algebras and matrix algebras over 2-dimensional spaces with torsion $H^{2}$ groups.
By adapting an ultraproduct technique of Junge and Zeng, we prove that radial completely bounded multipliers on $q$-Gaussian algebras transfer to $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. As a consequence, we establish the $w^{\ast}$-complete metric approximation property for all $q$-Araki-Woods algebras. We apply the latter result to show that the canonical ultraweakly dense C$^\ast$-subalgebras of $q$-Araki-Woods algebras are always QWEP.
Let $G$ be a locally compact group and let $C^*(G)$ and $C^*_r(G)$ be the full group $C^*$-algebra and the reduced group $C^*$-algebra of $G$. We investigate the relationship between Property $(T)$ for $G$ and Property $(T)$ as well as its strong version for $C^*(G)$ and $C^*_r(G)$. We show that $G$ has Property $(T)$ if (and only if) $C^*(G)$ has Property $(T)$. In the case where $G$ is a locally compact IN-group, we prove that $G$ has Property $(T)$ if and only if $C^*_r(G)$ has strong Property $(T)$. We also show that $C^*_r(G)$ has strong Property $(T)$ for every non-amenable locally compa…
We study a general Kishimoto's problem for automorphisms on simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero. Let $A$ be a unital separable simple C*-algebra with tracial rank zero and let $α$ be an automorphism. Under the assumption that $α$ has certain Rokhlin property, we present a proof that $A\rtimes_α\Z$ has tracial rank zero. We also show that if the induced map $α_{*0}$ on $K_0(A)$ fixes a "dense" subgroup of $K_0(A)$ then the tracial Rokhlin property implies a stronger Rokhlin property. Consequently, the induced crossed product C*-algebras have tracial rank zero.
Takahasi and Hatori introduced a class of commutative Banach algebras which satisfy a Bochner-Schoenberg-Eberlein-type inequality. Baised on their results we introduced a class of commutative Fréchet algebras which satisfy this property. We show that Fréchet C*-algebras and uniform Fréchet algebras are BSE-algebras.
We study the Haagerup property for C*-algebras. We first give new examples of C*-algebras with the Haagerup property. A nuclear C*-algebra with a faithful tracial state always has the Haagerup property, and the permanence of the Haagerup property for C*-algebras is established. As a consequence, the class of all C*-algebras with the Haagerup property turns out to be quite large. We then apply Popa's results and show the C*-algebras with property (T) have a certain rigidity property. Unlike the case of von Neumann algebras, for the reduced group C*-algebras of groups with relative property (T),…
In this thesis we explore the the possibility of characterising C* algebras by their (non-isometric) Banach algebra structure alone. We introduce a property of Banach algebras, the Total Reduction Property, and conjecture that a Banach algebra has this property if and only if it is isomorphic to a C* algebra. We establish some partial results in support of this conjecture.
For projectionless C*-algebras absorbing the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially, we study a kind of the Rohlin property for autmorphisms. We show that the crossed products obtained by automorphisms with this Rohlin property also absorb the Jiang-Su algebra tensorially under a mild technical condition on the C*-algebras. In particular, for the Jiang-Su algebra we show the uniqueness up to outer conjugacy of the automorphism with this Rohlin property.
In this paper, we consider $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property (the ideal property unifies the simple and real rank zero cases). We define two categories related the invariants of the $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property. And we showed that these two categories are in fact isomorphic. As a consequence, the Elliott's Invariant and the Stevens' Invariant are isomorphic for $\text{C}^*$-algebras with the ideal property.
In his study of the relative Dixmier property for inclusions of von Neumann algebras and of $C^*$-algebras, Popa considered a certain property of automorphisms on $C^*$-algebras, that we here call the strong averaging property. In this note we characterize when an automorphism on a $C^*$-algebra has the strong averaging property. In particular, automorphisms on commutative $C^*$-algebras possess this property precisely when they are free. An automorphism on a unital separable simple $C^*$-algebra with at least one tracial state has the strong averaging property precisely when its extension to …
If $α$ is an amenable action of a discrete group $G$ on a unital C*-algebra $A$, then the crossed-product C*-algebra $A\rtimes_αG$ has the weak expectation property if and only if $A$ has this property.
We attempt presenting a notion of the Haagerup approximation property for an arbitrary von Neumann algebra by using its standard form. We also prove the expected heredity results for this property.
In this paper, we discuss some equivalent definitions of Property $Γ$ for a type II$_1$ von Neumann algebra. Using these equivalent definitions, we prove that the Pisier's similarity degree of a type II$_1$ von Neumann algebra with Property $Γ$ is equal to $3$.
In this paper, we will define the reduced cross-sectional $C^*$-algebras of $C^*$-algebraic bundles over locally compact groups and show that if a $C^*$-algebraic bundle has the approximation property (defined similarly as in the discrete case), then the full cross-sectional $C^*$-algebra and the reduced one coincide. Moreover, if a semi-direct product bundle has the approximation property and the underlying $C^*$-algebra is nuclear, then the cross-sectional $C^*$-algebra is also nuclear. We will also compare the approximation property with the amenability of Anantharaman-Delaroche in the case…
We introduce notions of the Rohlin property and the approximate representability for inclusions of unital $C^*$-algebras. We investigate a dual relation between the Rohlin property and the approximate representability. We prove that a number of classes of unital $C^*$-algebras are closed under inclusions with the Rohlin property, including: AF algebras, AI algebras, AT algebras, and related classes characterized by direct limit decomposition using semiprojective building blocks. $C^*$-algebras with stable rank one. $C^*$-algebras with real rank zero.
The Corona Factorization Property, originally invented to study extensions of C*-algebras, conveys essential information about the intrinsic structure of the C*-algebras. We show that the Corona Factorization Property of a σ-unital C*-algebra is completely captured by its Cuntz semigroup (of equivalence classes of positive elements in the stabilization of A). The corresponding condition in the Cuntz semigroup is a very weak comparability property termed the Corona Factorization Property for semigroups. Using this result one can for example show that all unital C*-algebras with finite decomposi…
The Local Lifting Property (LLP) is a localized version of projectivity for completely positive maps between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. Outside of the nuclear case, very few $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras are known to have the LLP. In this article, we show that the LLP holds for the algebraic contraction $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras introduced by Hadwin and further studied by Loring and Shulman. We also show that the universal Pythagorean $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras introduced by Brothier and Jones have the Lifting Property.
We discuss a synchronization property for subshifts, that we call $λ$-synchronization. Under an irreducibility assumption we associate to a $λ$-synchronizing subshift a simple and purely infinite $C^*$-algebra.
The aim of this note is to give a simpler proof of a result of Avsec, which states that $q$-Gaussian algebras have the complete metric approximation property.
We will study some modifications to the notion of an exact C*-algebra by replacing the minimal tensor product with the reduced free product. First we will demonstrate how the reduced free product of a short exact sequence of C*-algebras with another C*-algebra may be taken. It will then be demonstrated that this operation preserves exact sequences. We will also establish that adjoining arbitrary k-tuples of operators in a free way behaves well with respect to taking ultrapowers.
It is shown that a unital C*-algebra A has the Dixmier property if and only if it is weakly central and satisfies certain tracial conditions. This generalises the Haagerup-Zsido theorem for simple C*-algebras. We also study a uniform version of the Dixmier property, as satisfied for example by von Neumann algebras and the reduced C*-algebras of Powers groups, but not by all C*-algebras with the Dixmier property, and we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for a simple unital C*-algebra with unique tracial state to have this uniform property. We give further examples of C*-algebras with t…
Let $P \subset A$ be a inclusion of unital C*-algebras and $E\colon A \to P$ be a conditional expectation of index finite type. We introduce a Rokhlin property for $E$ and discuss about $\mathcal{D}$-absorbing proeprty, where $\mathcal{D}$ is a separable, unital, strongly self-absorbing C*-algebra. In this paper we consider permanent properties for strongly self-absorbing property under inclusions of unital C*-algebras with a finite Watatani index.
A general method of investigation of the uniqueness property for $C^*$-algebra equipped with a circle gauge action is discussed. It unifies isomorphism theorems for various crossed products and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for Cuntz-Krieger algebras.
We shall introduce the approximate representability and the Rohlin property for coactions of a finite dimensional $C^*$-Hopf algebra on a unital $C^*$-algebra and discuss some basic properties of approximately representable coactions and coactions with the Rohlin property of a finite dimensional $C^*$-Hopf algebra on a unital $C^*$-algebra. Also, we shall give an example of an approximately representable coaction of a finite dimensional $C^*$-Hopf algebra on a simple unital $C^*$-algebra which has also the Rohlin property and we shall give the 1-cohomology vanishing theorem for coactions of a …
A synaptic algebra is a common generalization of several ordered algebraic structures based on algebras of self-adjoint operators, including the self-adjoint part of an AW*-algebra. In this paper we prove that a synaptic algebra A has the monotone square property, i.e., if a and b are positive elements, then if a is less or equal than b, then the square root of a is less or equal than the square root of b.
We introduce the Rohlin property and the approximate representability for finite group actions on stably projectionless C*-algebras and study their basic properties. We give some examples of finite group actions on the Razak-Jacelon algebra and show some classification results of these actions. This study is based on the work of Izumi, Robert's classification theorem and Kirchberg's central sequence C*-algebras.
We extend the class of contractions for which the second quantisation on $q$-Araki-Woods algebras can be defined. As a corollary, we prove that all $q$-Araki-Woods algebras possess the Haagerup approximation property.
A $C^*$-algebra is said to have the LP property if the linear span of projections is dense in a given algebra. In the first part of this paper, we show that an AH algebra $A = \underrightarrow{\lim}(A_i,ϕ_i)$ has the LP property if and only if every real-valued continuous function on the spectrum of $A_i$ (as an element of $A_i$ via the non-unital embedding) belongs to the closure of the linear span of projections in $A$. As a consequence, a diagonal AH-algebra has the LP property if it has small eigenvalue variation. The second contribution of this paper is that for an inclusion of unital $C^…
We describe representations of groupoid C*-algebras on Hilbert modules over arbitrary C*-algebras by a universal property. For Hilbert space representations, our universal property is equivalent to Renault's Integration-Disintegration Theorem. For a locally compact group, it is related to the automatic continuity of measurable group representations. It implies known descriptions of groupoid C*-algebras as crossed products for étale groupoids and transformation groupoids of group actions on spaces.
The extended Cuntz-Pimsner algebra E(H), introduced by Pimsner, is constructed from a Hilbert B,B-bimodule H over a C*-algebra B. In this paper we investigate the Haagerup invariant Λ(.) for these algebras, the main result being that Λ(E(H))=Λ(B) when H is full over B. In particular, E(H) has the completely bounded approximation property if and only if the same is true for B.
In this paper, Property $Γ$ for a type II$_{1}$ von Neumann algebra is introduced as a generalization of Murray and von Neumann's Property $Γ$ for a type II$_{1}$ factor. The main result of this paper is that if a type II$_{1}$ von Neumann algebra $\mathcal{M}$ with separable predual has Property $Γ$, then the continuous Hochschild cohomology group $H^{k}(\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{M})$ vanishes for every $k \geq 2$. This gives a generalization of an earlier result due to E. Christensen, F. Pop, A.M. Sinclair and R.R. Smith.
We define a Riesz type interpolation property for the Cuntz semigroup of a $C^*$-algebra and prove it is satisfied by the Cuntz semigroup of every $C^*$-algebra with the ideal property. Related to this, we obtain two characterizations of the ideal property in terms of the Cuntz semigroup of the $C^*$-algebra. Some additional characterizations are proved in the special case of the stable, purely infinite $C^*$-algebras, and two of them are expressed in language of the Cuntz semigroup. We introduce a notion of comparison of positive elements for every unital $C^*$-algebra that has (normalized) q…
We introduce a notion of topological property (T) for étale groupoids. This simultaneously generalizes Kazhdan's property (T) for groups and geometric property (T) for coarse spaces. One main goal is to use this property (T) to prove the existence of so-called Kazhdan projections in both maximal and reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras, and explore applications of this to exactness, K-exactness, and the Baum-Connes conjecture. We also study various examples, and discuss the relationship with other notions of property (T) for groupoids and with a-T-menability.
For an arbitrary discrete probability-measure-preserving groupoid $G$, we provide a characterization of property (T) for $G$ in terms of the groupoid von Neumann algebra $L(G)$. More generally, we obtain a characterization of relative property (T) for a subgroupoid $H\subset G$ in terms of the inclusion $L\left( H\right) \subset L\left( G\right) $.
