Universal $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras with the Local Lifting Property

The Local Lifting Property (LLP) is a localized version of projectivity for completely positive maps between $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras. Outside of the nuclear case, very few $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras are known to have the LLP. In this article, we show that the LLP holds for the algebraic contraction $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras introduced by Hadwin and further studied by Loring and Shulman. We also show that the universal Pythagorean $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras introduced by Brothier and Jones have the Lifting Property.

Obstructions to lifting abelian subalgebras of corona algebras

Let $A$ be a non-commutative, non-unital $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebra. Given a set of commuting positive elements in the corona algebra $Q(A)$, we study some obstructions to the existence of a commutative lifting of such set to the multiplier algebra $M(A)$. Our focus are the obstructions caused by the size of the collection we want to lift. Lifting KK-elements, asymptotical unitary equivalence and classification of simple C*-algebras

Let $A$ and $C$ be two unital simple C*-algebas with tracial rank zero. Suppose that $C$ is amenable and satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. Lifting algebraic contractions in C*-algebras

Let p be a polynomial in one variable. It is shown that the universal C*-algebra of the relation p(x)=0, \|x\| \le C is semiprojective, residually finite-dimensional and has trivial extension group.

Lifting of nilpotent contractions

It is proved that that every nilpotent contraction in a quotient C*-algebra can be lifted to a nilpotent contraction. As a consequence we get that the universal C*-algebra generated by a nilpotent contraction is projective. This answers the question posed by T. Loring.

Noncommutative Semialgebraic sets and Associated Lifting Problems

We solve a class of lifting problems involving approximate polynomial relations (soft polynomial relations). Various associated C*-algebras are therefore projective. The technical lemma we need is a new manifestation of Akemann and Pedersen's discovery of the norm adjusting power of quasi-central approximate units. Nonsimplicity of certain universal $\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras

Given $n\geq 2$, $z_{ij}\in\mathbb{T}$ such that $z_{ij}=\overline z_{ji}$ for $1\leq i,j\leq n$ and $z_{ii}=1$ for $1\leq i\leq n$, and integers $p_1,...,p_n\geq 1$, we show that the universal $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra generated by unitaries $u_1,...,u_n$ such that $u_i^{p_i}u_j^{p_j}=z_{ij}u_j^{p_j}u_i^{p_i}$ for $1\leq i,j \leq n$ is not simple if at least one exponent $p_i$ is at least two. We indicate how the method of proof by `working with various quotients' can be used to establish nonsimplicity of universal $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras in other cases.

There is no separable universal II_1-factor

Gromov constructed uncountably many pairwise non-isomorphic discrete groups with Kazhdan's property (T). We will show that no separable II_1-factor can contain all these groups in its unitary group. In particular, no separable II_1-factor can contain all separable II_1-factors in it. We also show that the full group C*-algebras of some of these groups fail the lifting property.

A Kirchberg type tensor theorem for operator systems

We construct operator systems $\mathfrak C_I$ that are universal in the sense that all operator systems can be realized as their quotients. They satisfy the operator system lifting property. Finite presentation, the local lifting property, and local approximation properties of operator modules

We introduce notions of finite presentation and co-exactness which serve as qualitative and quantitative analogues of finite-dimensionality for operator modules over completely contractive Banach algebras. With these notions we begin the development of a local theory of operator modules by introducing analogues of the local lifting property, nuclearity, and semi-discreteness.
