We construct operator systems $\mathfrak C_I$ that are universal in the sense that all operator systems can be realized as their quotients. They satisfy the operator system lifting property. Without relying on the theorem by Kirchberg, we prove the Kirchberg type tensor theorem $$\mathfrak C_I \otimes_{\min} B(H) = \mathfrak C_I \otimes_{\max} B(H).$$ Combining this with a result of Kavruk, we give a new operator system theoretic proof of Kirchberg's theorem and show that Kirchberg's conjecture is equivalent to its operator system analogue $$\mathfrak C_I \otimes_{\min} \mathfrak C_I =\mathfrak C_I \otimes_{\rm c} \mathfrak C_I.$$ It is natural to ask whether the universal operator systems $\mathfrak C_I$ are projective objects in the category of operator systems. We show that an operator system from which all unital completely positive maps into operator system quotients can be lifted is necessarily one-dimensional. Moreover, a finite dimensional operator system satisfying a perturbed lifting property can be represented as the direct sum of matrix algebras. We give an operator system theoretic approach to the Effros-Haagerup lifting theorem.
The Gurarij operator space $\mathbb{NG}$ introduced by Oikhberg is the unique separable $1$-exact operator space that is approximately injective in the category of $1$-exact operator spaces and completely isometric linear maps. We prove that a separable operator space $X$ is nuclear if and only if there exist a linear complete isometry $φ:X\rightarrow \mathbb{NG}$ and a completely contractive projection from $\mathbb{NG}$ onto the range of $φ$. This can be seen as the operator space analog of Kirchberg's nuclear embedding theorem. We also establish the natural operator system analog of Kirchbe…
We show an equivariant Kirchberg-Phillips-type absorption theorem for pointwise outer actions of discrete amenable groups on Kirchberg algebras with respect to natural model actions on the Cuntz algebras $\mathcal{O}_\infty$ and $\mathcal{O}_2$. This generalizes results known for finite groups and poly-$\mathbb{Z}$ groups. The model actions are shown to be determined, up to strong cocycle conjugacy, by natural abstract properties, which are verified for some examples of actions arising from tensorial shifts. We also show the following homotopy rigidity result, which may be understood as a prec…
A universal coefficient theorem is proved for C*-algebras over an arbitrary finite T_0-space X which have vanishing boundary maps. Under bootstrap assumptions, this leads to a complete classification of unital/stable real-rank-zero Kirchberg X-algebras with intermediate cancellation. Range results are obtained for (unital) purely infinite graph C*-algebras with intermediate cancellation and Cuntz-Krieger algebras with intermediate cancellation. Permanence results for extensions of these classes follow.
Tsirelson's problem asks whether the set of nonlocal quantum correlations with a tensor product structure for the Hilbert space coincides with the one where only commutativity between observables located at different sites is assumed. Here it is shown that Kirchberg's QWEP conjecture on tensor products of C*-algebras would imply a positive answer to this question for all bipartite scenarios. This remains true also if one considers not only spatial correlations, but also spatiotemporal correlations, where each party is allowed to apply their measurements in temporal succession; we provide an ex…
In the paper, we provide some examples of MF algebras by considering minimal or maximal tensor products of MF algebras and crossed products of MF algebras by finite groups or an integer group. We also present some examples of C$^*$-algebras, whose BDF extension semigroup is not group. These examples include, for example, $ C_r^*(F_n)\otimes_{max} C^*(F_n) $, $ C_r^*(F_n)\otimes_{min} C^*(F_n) $, $C_r^*(H_1\ast H_2)$ with $2\le |H_1|<\infty$ and $3\le |H_2|<\infty$ where $|H_1|$, $|H_2|$ are the orders of thr groups $H1$, or $H_2$ respectively, and many others.
We continue our study of tensor products in the operator system category. We define operator system quotients and exactness in this setting and refine the notion of nuclearity by studying operator systems that preserve various pairs of tensor products. One of our main goals is to relate these refinements of nuclearity to the Kirchberg conjecture. In particular, we prove that the Kirchberg conjecture is equivalent to the statement that every operator system that is (min,er)-nuclear is also (el,c)-nuclear. We show that operator system quotients are not always equal to the corresponding operator …
I present a proof of Kirchberg's classification theorem: two separable, nuclear, $\mathcal O_\infty$-stable $C^\ast$-algebras are stably isomorphic if and only if they are ideal-related $KK$-equivalent. In particular, this provides a more elementary proof of the Kirchberg--Phillips theorem which is isolated in the paper to increase readability of this important special case.
For any pair $M,N$ of von Neumann algebras such that the algebraic tensor product $M\otimes N$ admits more than one $\mathrm{C}^*$-norm, the cardinal of the set of $\mathrm{C}^*$-norms is at least $ {2^{\aleph_0}}$. Moreover there is a family with cardinality $ {2^{\aleph_0}}$ of injective tensor product functors for $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras in Kirchberg's sense. Let $\IB=\prod_n M_{n}$. We also show that, for any non-nuclear von Neumann algebra $M\subset \IB(\ell_2)$, the set of $\mathrm{C}^*$-norms on $\IB \otimes M$ has cardinality equal to $2^{2^{\aleph_0}}$.
An operator system modulo the kernel of a completely positive linear map of the operator system gives rise to an operator system quotient. In this paper, operator system quotients and quotient maps of certain matrix algebras are considered. Some applications to operator algebra theory are given, including a new proof of Kirchberg's theorem on the tensor product of B(H) with the group C*-algebra of a countable free group. We also show that an affirmative solution to the Connes Embedding Problem is implied by various matrix-theoretic problems, and we give a new characterisation of unital C*-alge…
Some recent research on the tensor products of operator systems and ensuing nuclearity properties in this setting raised many stability problems. In this paper we examine the preservation of these nuclearity properties including exactness, local liftability and the double commutant expectation property under basic algebraic operations such as quotient, duality, coproducts and tensor products. We show that, in the finite dimensional case, exactness and lifting property are dual pairs, that is, an operator system $S$ is exact if and only if the dual operator system $S^d$ has the lifting property…
We study tensor products of a $C_0 (X)$-algebra $A$ and a $C_0 (Y)$-algebra $B$, and analyse the structure of their minimal tensor product $A \otimes B$ as a $C_0 (X \times Y)$-algebra. We show that when $A$ and $B$ define continuous C$^{\ast}$-bundles, that continuity of the bundle arising from the $C_0 (X \times Y)$-algebra $A \otimes B$ is a strictly weaker property than continuity of the `fibrewise tensor products' studied by Kirchberg and Wassermann. For a fixed quasi-standard C$^{\ast}$-algebra $A$, we show that $A \otimes B$ is quasi-standard for all quasi-standard $B$ precisely when $A…
With the help of Kirchberg's and Selberg's theorems, we prove that the minimal tensor product of $B(H)$ with itself does not have the WEP (weak expectation property) of Lance.
We prove that an operator system $\mathcal S$ is nuclear in the category of operator systems if and only if there exist nets of unital completely positive maps $ϕ_λ: \cl S \to M_{n_λ}$ and $ψ_λ: M_{n_λ} \to \cl S$ such that $ψ_λ\circ ϕ_λ$ converges to ${\rm id}_{\cl S}$ in the point-norm topology. Our proof is independent of the Choi-Effros-Kirchberg characterization of nuclear $C^*$-algebras and yields this characterization as a corollary. We give an example of a nuclear operator system that is not completely order isomorphic to a unital $C^*$-algebra.
We show that the class of 1-exact operator systems is not uniformly definable by a sequence of types. We use this fact to show that there is no finitary version of Arveson's extension theorem. Next, we show that WEP is equivalent to a certain notion of existential closedness for C$^*$ algebras and use this equivalence to give a simpler proof of Kavruk's result that WEP is equivalent to the complete tight Riesz interpolation property. We then introduce a variant of the space of n-dimensional operator systems and connect this new space to the Kirchberg Embedding Problem, which asks whether every…
Starting from Kirchberg's theorems announced in 1994, namely O_2 tensor A is isomorphic to O_2 for separable unital nuclear simple A and O_infinity tensor A is isomorphic to A if in addition A is purely infinite, we prove that KK-equivalence implies isomorphism for nonunital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras. It follows that if A and B are unital separable nuclear purely infinite simple C*-algebras which satisfy the Universal Coefficient Theorem, and if there is a graded isomorphism from K_* (A) to K_* (B) which preserves the class of the identity, then A is isomorphic to B.…
Let R be a finite Blaschke product. We study the C*-algebra TC_R generated by both the composition operator C_R and the Toeplitz operator T_z on the Hardy space. We show that the simplicity of the quotient algebra OC_R by the ideal of the compact operators can be characterized by the dynamics near the Denjoy-Wolff point of R if the degree of R is at least two. Moreover we prove that the degree of finite Blaschke products is a complete isomorphism invariant for the class of OC_R such that R is a finite Blaschke product of degree at least two and the Julia set of R is the unit circle, using the …
Local actions of $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$, the group of finite permutations on $\mathbb{N}$, on quasi-local algebras are defined and proved to be $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$-abelian. It turns out that invariant states under local actions are automatically even, and extreme invariant states are strongly clustering. Tail algebras of invariant states are shown to obey a form of the Hewitt and Savage theorem, in that they coincide with the fixed-point von Neumann algebra. Infinite graded tensor products of $C^*$-algebras, which include the CAR algebra, are then addressed as particular examples of quasi…
In this mostly expository note, we revisit the Künneth theorem in $K$-theory of nonnuclear C*-algebras. We show that, using examples considered by Skandalis, there are algebras satisfying the Künneth theorem for the minimal tensor product but not for the maximal tensor product and vice versa.
