For a permutation $π$ in the symmetric group $S_n$ let the {\it total degree} be its valency in the Hasse diagram of the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, and let the {\it down degree} be the number of permutations which are covered by $π$ in the strong Bruhat order. The maxima of the total degree and the down degree and their values at a random permutation are computed. Proofs involve variants of a classical theorem of Turán from extremal graph theory.
We give an explicit nonrecursive complete matching for the Hasse diagram of the strong Bruhat order of any interval in any Coxeter group. This yields a new derivation of the Mobius function, recovering a classical result due to Verma.
We study the Ricci curvature of the Hasse diagrams of the Bruhat order of finite irreducible Coxeter groups. For this purpose we compute the maximum degree of these graphs for types $B_n$ and $D_n$. The proof uses a new graph $Γ(π)$ defined for any element $π$ in the corresponding group.
The order complex of inclusion poset $PF_n$ of Borel orbit closures in skew-symmetric matrices is investigated. It is shown that $PF_n$ is an EL-shellable poset, and furthermore, its order complex triangulates a ball. The rank-generating function of $PF_n$ is computed and the resulting polynomial is contrasted with the Hasse-Weil zeta function of the variety of skew-symmetric matrices over finite fields.
The odd diagram of a permutation is a subset of the classical diagram with additional parity conditions. In this paper, we study classes of permutations with the same odd diagram, which we call odd diagram classes. First, we prove a conjecture relating odd diagram classes and 213- and 312-avoiding permutations. Secondly, we show that each odd diagram class is a Bruhat interval. Instrumental to our proofs is an explicit description of the Bruhat edges that link permutations in a class.
In recent work, the authors used an order lowering operator $\nabla$, introduced by Stanley, to prove the strong Sperner property for the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Hamaker, Pechenik, Speyer, and Weigandt interpreted $\nabla$ as a differential operator on Schubert polynomials and used this to prove a new identity for Schubert polynomials and a determinant conjecture of Stanley. In this paper we study a raising operator $Δ$ for the \emph{strong} Bruhat order, which is in many ways dual to $\nabla$. We prove a Schubert identity dual to that of Hamaker et al. and derive formulas fo…
For every positive integer $n$, we construct a Hasse diagram with $n$ vertices and chromatic number $Ω(n^{1/4})$, which significantly improves on the previously known best constructions of Hasse diagrams having chromatic number $Θ(\log n)$. In addition, if we also require that our Hasse diagram has girth at least $k\geq 5$, we can achieve a chromatic number of at least $n^{\frac{1}{2k-3}+o(1)}$. These results have the following surprising geometric consequence. They imply the existence of a family $\mathcal{C}$ of $n$ curves in the plane such that the disjointness graph $G$ of $\mathcal{C}$ is…
Given a family of curves $\mathcal{C}$ in the plane, its disjointness graph is the graph whose vertices correspond to the elements of $\mathcal{C}$, and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if the corresponding sets are disjoint. We prove that for every positive integer $r$ and $n$, there exists a family of $n$ curves whose disjointness graph has girth $r$ and chromatic number $Ω(\frac{1}{r}\log n)$. In the process we slightly improve Bollobás's old result on Hasse diagrams and show that our improved bound is best possible for uniquely generated partial orders.
Let $P(n)$ be the set of all posets with $n$ elements. Let $P^{(j)}(n)$, $1\leq j\leq 2^n,$ be the number of all posets with $n$ elements possessing exactly $j$ antichains. We have determined the numbers $P^{(j)}(7),$ $1\leq j\leq 128$, and using a result of M.~Erné [Erné, M., On the cardinalities of finite topologies and the number of antichains in partially ordered sets, Discrete Mathematics 35 (1981), 119-133.], we compute $|P(10)|$ without the aid of any computer program. We include the Hasse diagrams of all the non-isomorphic posets of $P(7)$. We also present formulas for the number of co…
One introduces here the natural join $P \os Q$ of graded posets $< P,\leq_P >$ and $< Q,\leq_Q >$ with correspondingly maximal and minimal sets being identical as expressed by ordinal sum $P\oplus Q$ apart from other definition and due to that one arrives at a simple proof of the $M{ö}bius $ function formula for cobweb posets. We also quote the other authors explicit formulas for the zeta matrix and its inverse for any graded posets with the finite set of minimal elements from earlier works of the author. These formulas are based on the formulas for cobweb posets and their $Hasse$ diagrams or …
In this article, we investigate the set of $γ$-sortable elements, associated with a Coxeter group $W$ and a Coxeter element $γ\in W$, under Bruhat order, and we denote this poset by $\mathcal{B}_γ$. We show that this poset belongs to the class of SB-lattices recently introduced by Hersh and Mészáros, by proving a more general statement, namely that all join-distributive lattices are SB-lattices. The observation that $\mathcal{B}_γ$ is join-distributive is due to Armstrong. Subsequently, we investigate for which finite Coxeter groups $W$ and which Coxeter elements $γ\in W$ the lattice $\mathcal…
A lucasene is a hexagon chain that is similar to a fibonaccene, an $L$-fence is a poset the Hasse diagram of which is isomorphic to the directed inner dual graph of the corresponding lucasene. A new class of cubes, which named after matchable Lucas cubes according to the number of its vertices (or elements), are a series of directed or undirected Hasse diagrams of filter lattices of $L$-fences. The basic properties and several classes of polynomials, e.g.\ rank generating functions, cube polynomials and degree sequence polynomials, of matchable Lucas cubes are obtained. Some special conclusion…
We consider closed meandric systems, and their equivalent description in terms of the Hasse diagrams of the lattices of non-crossing partitions $NC(n)$. In this equivalent description, the number of components of a random meandric system of order $n$ translates into the distance between two partitions in $NC(n)$. We focus on a class of couples $(π,ρ)\in NC(n)^2$ -- namely the ones where $π$ is conditioned to be an interval partition -- for which it turns out to be tractable to study distances in the Hasse diagram. As a consequence, we observe a non-trivial class of meanders (i.e. connected mea…
In this paper we study a mapping from permutations to Dyck paths. A Dyck path gives rise to a (Young) diagram and we give relationships between statistics on permutations and statistics on their corresponding diagrams. The distribution of the size of this diagram is discussed and a generalisation given of a parity result due to Simion and Schmidt. We propose a filling of the diagram which determines the permutation uniquely. Diagram containment on a restricted class of permutations is shown to be related to the strong Bruhat poset.
Motivated by the geometry of certain hyperplane arrangements, Manin and Schechtman defined for each positive integer n a hierarchy of finite partially ordered sets B(n, k), indexed by positive integers k, called the higher Bruhat orders. The poset B(n, 1) is naturally identified with the weak left Bruhat order on the symmetric group S_n, each B(n, k) has a unique maximal and a unique minimal element, and the poset B(n, k + 1) can be constructed from the set of maximal chains in B(n, k). Elias has demonstrated a striking connection between the posets B(n, k) for k = 2 and the diagrammatics of B…
In the first part of this work we provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent subsets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a value is the number of edges of a Fibonacci cube. We show that, in general, the number of edges of the diagram is obtained by convolution of a Fibonacci-like sequence with itself. In the second part we consider the case of cycles. We evaluate the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent subsets of the h-th power of a cycle ordered by inclusion. For h=1, and n>1, such a value is the number of e…
We study efficient combinatorial algorithms to produce the Hasse diagram of the poset of bounded faces of an unbounded polyhedron, given vertex-facet incidences. We also discuss the special case of simple polyhedra and present computational results.

For each poset $H$ whose Hasse diagram is a tree of height $k$, we show that the largest size of a family $\cF$ of subsets of $[n]=\{1,..., n\}$ not containing $H$ as an induced subposet is asymptotic to $(k-1){n\choose \fl{n/2}}$. This extends the result of Bukh \cite{bukh}, which in turn generalizes several known results including Sperner's theorem.
We study combinatorial and order theoretic structures arising from the fragment of combinatory logic spanned by the basic combinator ${\bf M}$. This basic combinator, named as the Mockingbird by Smullyan, is defined by the rewrite rule ${\bf M} x_1 \to x_1 x_1$. We prove that the reflexive and transitive closure of this rewrite relation is a partial order on terms on ${\bf M}$ and that all connected components of its rewrite graph are Hasse diagrams of lattices. This last result is based on the introduction of lattices on some forests. We enumerate the elements, the edges of the Hasse diagrams…
We consider the problem of finding the number of matrices over a finite field with a certain rank and with support that avoids a subset of the entries. These matrices are a q-analogue of permutations with restricted positions (i.e., rook placements). For general sets of entries these numbers of matrices are not polynomials in q (Stembridge 98); however, when the set of entries is a Young diagram, the numbers, up to a power of q-1, are polynomials with nonnegative coefficients (Haglund 98). In this paper, we give a number of conditions under which these numbers are polynomials in q, or even pol…
There are numerous combinatorial objects associated to a Grassmannian permutation $w_λ$ that index cells of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. We study several of these objects and their $q$-analogues in the case of permutations $w$ that are not necessarily Grassmannian. We give two main results: first, we show that certain acyclic orientations, rook placements avoiding a diagram of $w$, and fillings of a diagram of $w$ are equinumerous for all permutations $w$. Second, we give a $q$-analogue of a result of Hultman-Linusson-Shareshian-Sjöstrand by showing that under a certain pattern condit…
The Young--Fibonacci graph is the Hasse diagram of one of the two (along with the Young lattice) 1-differential graded modular lattices. This explains the interest to path enumeration problems in this graph. We obtain a formula for the number of paths between two vertices of the Young--Fibonacci graph which is polynomial with respect to the minimum of their ranks.
The characterization of fibonacci cobweb poset as d.a.g. and o.d.a.g. is given. The dim 2 poset such that its hasse diagram coincide with digraf of fibonacci cobweb poset is constructed.
Let $Δ$ be a root system with a subset of positive roots, $Δ^+$. We consider edges of the Hasse diagrams of some posets associated with $Δ^+$. For each edge one naturally defines its type, and we study the partition of the set of edges into types. For $Δ^+$, the type is a simple root, and for the posets of ad-nilpotent and Abelian ideals the type is an affine simple roots. We give several descriptions of the set of edges of given type and uniform expressions for the number of edges. By a result of Peterson, the number of Abelian ideals is $2^n$, where $n$ is the rank of $Δ$. We prove that the …
We provide a formula for the number of edges of the Hasse diagram of the independent subsets of the h-th power of a path ordered by inclusion. For h=1 such a value is the number of edges of a Fibonacci cube. We show that, in general, the number of edges of the diagram is obtained by convolution of a Fibonacci-like sequence with itself.
We consider two partial orders on standard Young tableaux. The first one is induced from the weak right Bruhat order on symmetric group by Robinson-Schensted algorithm. The second one is induced from the order on Young diagrams by considering a Young tableau as a chain of Young diagrams. We show that these two orders of completely different nature coincide on the subset of Young tableaux with 2 columns or with 2 rows. This fact has very interesting geometric implications for orbital varieties of nilpotent order 2 in sl(n).
Let G be the group preserving a nondegenerate sesquilinear form on a vector space V, and H a symmetric subgroup of G of the type G1 x G2. We explicitly parameterize the H-orbits in the Grassmannian of r-dimensional isotropic subspaces of V by a complete set of H-invariants. We describe the Bruhat order in terms of the majorization relationship over a diagram of these H-invariants. The inclusion order, the stabilizer, the orbit dimension, the open H-orbits, the decompositions of an H orbit into H\cap G_0 and H_0 orbits are also explicitly described.
A meander of order n is a simple closed curve in the plane which intersects a horizontal line transversely at 2n points. (Meanders which differ by an isotopy of the line and plane are considered equivalent.) Let Gamma_n be the Cayley graph of the symmetric group S_n as generated by all (n choose 2) transpositions. Let Lambda_n be any interval of maximal length in Gamma_n; this graph is the Hasse diagram of the lattice of noncrossing partitions. The meanders of order n are in one-to-one correspondence with ordered pairs of maximally separated vertices of Lambda_n.
