In this paper the authors show how to use Riemann-Hilbert techniques to prove various results, some old, some new, in the theory of Toeplitz operators and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC's). There are four main results: the first concerns the approximation of the inverse of a Toeplitz operator by the inverses of its finite truncations. The second concerns a new proof of the `hard' part of Baxter's theorem, and the third concerns the Born approximation for a scattering problem on the lattice $\mathbb{Z}_+$. The fourth and final result concerns a basic proposition of Golinskii-Ibragimov arising in their analysis of the Strong Szegö Limit Theorem.
In this paper, we mainly study the hyponormality of dual Toeplitz operators on the orthogonal complement of the harmonic Bergman space. First we show that the dual Toeplitz operator with bounded symbol is hyponormal if and only if it is normal. Then we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for the dual Toeplitz operator $S_φ$ with the symbol $φ(z) = az^{n_1}\overline{z}^{m_1} + bz^{n_2} \overline{z}^{m_2}$, $(n_1,n_2,m_1,m_2\in \mathbb {N}$ and $a,b \in \mathbb{C})$ to be hyponormal. Finally, we show that the rank of the commutator of two dual Toeplitz operators must be an even number if…
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression of a classical Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space to a model space. A truncated Hankel operator is the compression of a Hankel operator on the Hardy space to the orthogonal complement of a model space. We study the product of a truncated Hankel operator and a truncated Toeplitz operator, and characterize when such a product is zero or compact.
We study the boundedness of Toeplitz operators on Segal-Bargmann spaces in various contexts. Using Gutzmer's formula as the main tool we identify symbols for which the Toeplitz operators correspond to Fourier multipliers on the underlying groups. The spaces considered include Fock spaces, Hermite and twisted Bergman spaces and Segal-Bargmann spaces associated to Riemannian symmetric spaces of compact type.
Self-adjoint Toeplitz operators have purely absolutely continuous spectrum. For Toeplitz operators $T$ with piecewise continuous symbols, we suggest a further spectral classification determined by propagation properties of the operator $T$, that is, by the behavior of $\exp(-iTt) f$ for $t\to\pm\infty$. It turns out that the spectrum is naturally partitioned into three disjoint subsets: thick, thin and mixed spectra. On the thick spectrum, the propagation properties are modeled by the continuous part of the symbol, whereas on the thin spectrum, the model operator is determined by the jumps of …
Truncated Toeplitz operators in a model space are C--symmetric with respect to a natural conjugation in that space. We show that this and another conjugation associated to an orthogonal decomposition possess unique properties and we study their relations with asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operators in terms of C--symmetry. New connections with Hankel operators are established through this approach.
By using Riemann--Hilbert problem based techniques, we obtain the asymptotic expansion of lacunary Toeplitz determinants $\det_N\big[ c_{\ell_a-m_b}[f] \big]$ generated by holomorhpic symbols, where $\ell_a=a$ (resp. $m_b=b$) except for a finite subset of indices $a=h_1,\dots, h_n$ (resp. $b=t_1,\dots, t_r$). In addition to the usual Szegö asymptotics, our answer involves a determinant of size $n+r$.
Asymmetric dual truncated Toeplitz operators acting between the orthogonal complements of two (eventually different) model spaces are introduced and studied. They are shown to be equivalent after extension to paired operators on $L^2(\mathbb T) \oplus L^2(\mathbb T)$ and, if their symbols are invertible in $L^\infty(\mathbb T)$, to asymmetric truncated Toeplitz operators with the inverse symbol. Relations with Carleson's corona theorem are also established. These results are used to study the Fredholmness, the invertibility and the spectra of various classes of dual truncated Toeplitz operator…
Motivated by [9] we study the existence of the inverse of infinite Hermitian moment matrices associated with measures with support on the complex plane. We relate this problem to the asymptotic behaviour of the smallest eigenvalues of finite sections and we study it from the point of view of infinite transition matrices associated to the orthogonal polynomials. For Toeplitz matrices we introduce the notion of weakly asymptotic Toeplitz matrix and we show that, under certain assumptions, the inverse of a Toeplitz moment matrix is weakly asymptotic Toeplitz. Such inverses are computed in terms o…
Following Beurling's theorem the natural compressions of the multiplication operator in the classical $L^2$ space are compressions to model spaces and to their orthogonal complements. Two possibly different model spaces are considered hence asymmetric truncated Toeplitz and asymmetric dual truncated Toeplitz operators are investigated. The main purpose of the paper is to characterize operators which intertwine compressions of the unilateral shift.
Inversion of Toeplitz matrices with singular symbol. Minimal eigenvalues. Three results are stated in this paper. The first one is devoted to the study of the orthogonal polynomial with respect of the weight $φ_α (θ)=\vert 1- e^{i θ} \vert ^{2α} f_{1}(e^{i θ})$, with $α> \demi$ and $α\in \rr \setminus \nn $, and $f_{1}$ a regular function. We obtain an asymptotic expansion of the coefficients of these polynomials, and we deduce an asymptotic of the entries of $\left( T_{N} (φ_α)\right)^{-1}$ where $T_{N} (φ_α)$ is a Toeplitz matrix with symbol $φ_α$. Then we extend a result of A. Böttcher and …
We consider a Jordan arc Γin the complex plane \mathbb{C} and a regular measure μwhose support is Γ. We denote by D the upper Hessenberg matrix of the multiplication by z operator with respect to the orthonormal polynomial basis associated with μ. We show in this work that, if the Hessenberg matrix D is uniformly asymptotically Toeplitz, then the symbol of the limit operator is the restriction to the unit circle of the Riemann mapping function ϕ(z) which maps conformally the exterior of the unit disk onto the exterior of the support of the measure μ. We use this result to show how to approxima…
We consider the $\dbar-$ equation in $\C^1$ in classes of functions with Gaussian decay at infinity. We prove that if the right-hand side of the equation is majorated by $\exp(-q|z|^2)$, with some positive $q$, together with derivatives up to some order, and is orthogonal, as a distribution, to all analytical polynomials, then there exists a solution with decays, together with derivatives, as $\exp(-q'|z|^2)$, for any $q'<q/e$. This result carries over to the $\dbar$-equation in classes of distributions, again, with Gaussian decay at infinity, in some precisely defined sense. The properties of…
A notion of equivariant spectral flows for families of self-dual elliptic operators on Riemannian manifolds is purposed. As a consequence, a local version of a Lefschetz fix point theorem is proved for Toeplitz operators on odd-dimensional spin manifolds.
A new concept of meromorphic $Σ$-factorization, for Hölder continuous functions defined on a contour $Γ$ that is the pullback of $\dot{\mathbb{R}}$ (or the unit circle) in a Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus 1, is introduced and studied, and its relations with holomorphic $Σ$-factorization are discussed. It is applied to study and solve some scalar Riemann-Hilbert problems in $Σ$ and vectorial Riemann-Hilbert problems in $\mathbb{C}$, including Wiener-Hopf matrix factorization, as well as to study some properties of a class of Toeplitz operators with $2 \times 2$ matrix symbols.
We derive the asymptotic behavior of determinants of truncated Wiener-Hopf operators generated by symbols having Fisher-Hartwig singularities. This task is achieved thanks to an asymptotic resolution of the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated to some generalized sine kernel. As a byproduct, we give yet another derivation of the asymptotic behavior of Toeplitz determinants having Fisher-Hartwig singularities. The Riemann-Hilbert problem approach to these asymptotics yields a systematic although quickly cumbersome way to compute their sub-leading asymptotics.
Some Wiener--Hopf determinants on [0,s] are calculated explicitly for all s>0. Their symbols are zero on an interval and they are related to the determinant with the sine-kernel appearing in the random matrix theory. The determinants are calculated by taking limits of Toeplitz determinants, which in turn are found from the related systems of polynomials orthogonal on an arc of the unit circle. As is known, the latter polynomials are connected to those orthogonal on an interval of the real axis. This connection is somewhat extended here. The determinants we compute originate from the Bernstein-…
We extend the Boutet de Monvel Toeplitz index theorem to complex manifold with isolated singularities following the relative $K$-homology theory of Baum, Douglas, and Taylor for manifold with boundary. We apply this index theorem to study the Arveson-Douglas conjecture. Let $\ball^m$ be the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and $I$ an ideal in the polynomial algebra $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$. We prove that when the zero variety $Z_I$ is a complete intersection space with only isolated singularities and intersects with the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2m-1}$ transversely, the representations of $\m…
For $α, β\in L^{\infty} (S^1),$ the singular integral operator $S_{α,β}$ on $L^2 (S^1)$ is defined by $S_{α,β}f:= αPf+βQf$, where $P$ denotes the orthogonal projection of $L^2(S^1)$ onto the Hardy space $H^2(S^1),$ and $Q$ denotes the orthogonal projection onto $H^2(S^1)^{\perp}.$ In a recent paper Nakazi and Yamamoto have studied the normality and self-adjointness of $S_{α,β}.$ This work has shown that $S_{α,β}$ may have analogous properties to that of the Toeplitz operator. In this paper we study several other properties of $S_{α,β}.$
