First we give a complex ball uniformization of the moduli space of 8 ordered points on the projective line by using the theory of periods of K3 surfaces. Next we give a projective model of this moduli space by using automorphic forms on a bounded symmetric domain of type IV which coincides with the one given by cross ratios of 8 ordered points of the projective line.
We shall show the existence of 15 automorphic forms of weight 8 on the moduli space of marked Hessian quartic surfaces of cubic surfaces. These automorphic forms can be interpreted in terms of the coefficients of the Sylvester form of a general cubic surface.
A holomorphic torsion invariant of K3 surfaces with involution was introduced by the second-named author. In this paper, we completely determine its structure as an automorphic function on the moduli space of such K3 surfaces. On every component of the moduli space, it is expressed as the product of an explicit Borcherds lift and a classical Siegel modular form. We also introduce its twisted version. We prove its modularity and a certain uniqueness of the modular form corresponding to the twisted holomorphic torsion invariant. This is used to study an equivariant analogue of Borcherds' conject…
We prove the automorphic property of the invariant of K3 surfaces with involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion, in the case where the dimension of the moduli space is less than or equal to 2.
This is a note constructing a certain weight 4 automorphic form on the moduli space of cubic surfaces, posted here because it is referred to in math.AG/0002066
We study the structure of the invariant of K3 surfaces with involution, which we obtained using equivariant analytic torsion. It was known before that the invariant is expressed as the Petersson norm of an automorphic form on the moduli space. When the rank of the invariant sublattice of the K3-lattice with respect to the involution is strictly bigger than 10, we prove that this automorphic form is expressed as the tensor product of an explicit Borcherds lift and Igusa's Siegel modular form.
In the study of automorphic representations over a function field, Hitchin moduli stack and its variants naturally appear and their geometry helps the comparison of trace formulae. We give a survey on applications of this observation to a relative fundamental lemma, the arithmetic fundamental lemma and to the higher Gross-Zagier formula.
This paper is the written version of D.Kazhdan's plenary talk at ICM 2022. It is dedicated to an exposition of recent results and (mostly) conjectures attempting to construct an analog of the theory of automorphic functions on moduli spaces of bundles on curves over local fields (both archimedian and non-archimedian). The talk is based on joint works of D.Kazhdan with A.Braverman, P.Etingof, E.Frenkel and A.Polishchuk.
The moduli space of cubic surfaces in complex projective space is known to be isomorphic to the quotient of the complex 4-ball by a certain arithmetic group. We apply Borcherds' techniques to construct automorphic forms for this group and show that these provide an embedding of the moduli space in 9-dimensional projective space. We also show that our automorphic forms directly encode the geometry of cubic surfaces, by showing that each of Cayley's invariants (certain cross-ratios) is simply a quotient of two of our automorphic forms.
We show that for any $N>0$ there exists a natural even $n>N$ such that the discriminant of moduli of K3 surfaces of the degree $n$ is not equal to the set of zeros of any automorphic form on the corresponding IV type domain. We give the necessary condition on a "condition $S\subset L_{K3}$ on Picard lattice of K3'' for the corresponding moduli $\M_{S\subset L_{K3}}$ of K3 to have the discriminant which is equal to the set of zeros of an automorphic form. We conjecture that the set of $S\subset L_{K3}$ satisfying this necessary condition is finite if $\rk S \le 17$. We consider this finiteness …
In this article we give a general approach to the following analogue of Shafarevich's conjecture for some polarized algebraic varieties; suppose that we fix a type of an algebraic variety and look at families of such type of varieties over a fixed Riemann surface with fixed points over which we have singular varieties, then one can ask if the set of such families, up to isomorphism, is finite. In this paper we give a general approach to such types of problems. The main observation is the following; suppose that the moduli space of a fixed type of algebraic polarized variety exists and suppose …
It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.
This paper is a companion of the paper "Weil's conjecture for function fields" by J. Lurie and the author. We present a different exposition of essentially the same algebro-geometric proof of the Atiyah-Bott for the cohomology of Bun(G), which subsequently leads to the proof of the Tamagawa number formula for the volume of the automorphic space for function fields.
The name "K3 surfaces" was coined by A. Weil in 1957 when he formulated a research programme for these surfaces and their moduli. Since then, irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds have been introduced as a higher dimensional analogue of K3 surfaces. In this paper we present a review of this theory starting from the definition of K3 surfaces and going as far as the global Torelli theorem for irreducible holomorphic symplectic manifolds as recently proved by M. Verbitsky. For many years the last open question of Weil's programme was that of the geometric type of the moduli spaces of polar…
We give variants of lifting construction, which define new classes of modular forms on the Siegel upper half-space of complex dimension 3 with respect to the full paramodular groups (defining moduli of Abelian surfaces with arbitrary polarization). The data for these liftings are Jacobi forms of integral and half-integral indices. In particular, we get modular forms which are generalizations of the Dedekind eta-function. Some of these forms define automorphic corrections of Lorentzian Kac-Moody algebras with hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of rank three classified in Part I of this pape…
Allcock and Freitag recently showed that the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces is a subvariety of a nine dimensional projective space which is defined by cubic equations. They used the theory of automorphic forms on ball quotients to obtain these results. Here we describe the same embedding using Naruki's toric model of the moduli space. We also give an explicit parametrization of the tritangent divisors, we discuss another way to find equations for the image and we show that the moduli space maps, with degree at least ten, onto the unique quintic hypersurface in a five dimensional project…
The Borcherds Phi-function is the automorphic form on the moduli space of Enriques surfaces characterizing the discriminant locus. In this paper, we give an algebro-geometric construction of the Borcherds Phi-function.
Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
The geometric Langlands correspondence for complex algebraic curves differs from the original Langlands correspondence for number fields in that it is formulated in terms of sheaves rather than functions (in the intermediate case of curves over finite fields, both formulations are possible). In a recent preprint, Robert Langlands made a proposal for developing an analytic theory of automorphic forms on the moduli space of $G$-bundles on a complex algebraic curve. Langlands envisioned these forms as eigenfunctions of some analogues of Hecke operators. In these notes I show that if $G$ is an abe…
We survey old and new results about the cohomology of the moduli space $A_g$ of principally polarized abelian varieties of genus $g$ and its compactifications. The main emphasis lies on the computation of the cohomology for small genus and on stabilization results. We review both geometric and representation theoretic approaches to the problem. The appendix provides a detailed discussion of computational methods based on trace formulae and automorphic representations, in particular Arthur's endoscopic classification of automorphic representations for symplectic groups.
We identify the algebra of regular functions on the space of quartic polynomials in three complex variables invariant under SL(3,C) with an algebra of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex 6-ball. We also discuss the underlying geometry.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective curve, $G$ a reductive group, and $Bun_G(X)$ the moduli of $G$-bundles on $X$. For each point of $X$, the Satake category acts by Hecke modifications on sheaves on $Bun_G(X)$. We show that, for sheaves with nilpotent singular support, the action is locally constant with respect to the point of $X$. This equips sheaves with nilpotent singular support with a module structure over perfect complexes on the Betti moduli $Loc_{G^\vee}(X)$ of dual group local systems. In particular, we establish the "automorphic to Galois" direction in the Betti Geometric Langlands corr…
We prove equidistribution of certain multidimensional unipotent flows in the moduli space of genus $g$ principally polarized abelian varieties (ppav). This is done by studying asymptotics of $\pmbΓ_{g} \sim Sp(2g,\mathbb{Z})$-automorphic forms averaged along unipotent flows, toward the codimension-one component of the boundary of the ppav moduli space. We prove a link between the error estimate and the Riemann hypothesis. Further, we prove $\pmbΓ_{g - r}$ modularity of the function obtained by iterating the unipotent average process $r$ times. This shows uniformization of modular integrals of …
We axiomatize the algebraic properties of toroidal compactifications of (mixed) Shimura varieties and their automorphic vector bundles. A notion of generalized automorphic sheaf is proposed which includes sheaves of (meromorphic) sections of automorphic vector bundles with prescribed vanishing and pole orders along strata in the compactification, and their quotients. These include, for instance, sheaves of Jacobi forms and weakly holomorphic modular forms. Using this machinery we give a short and purely algebraic proof of the proportionality theorem of Hirzebruch and Mumford.
The space $D$ of Hodge structures on a fixed polarized lattice is known as Griffiths period domain and its quotient by the isometry group of the lattice is the moduli of polarized Hodge structures of a fixed type. When $D$ is a Hermition symmetric domain then we have automorphic forms on $D$, which according to Baily-Borel theorem, they give an algebraic structure to the mentioned moduli space. In this article we slightly modify this picture by considering the space $U$ of polarized lattices in a fixed complex vector space with a fixed Hodge filtration and polarization. It turns out that the i…
We establish vanishing results for spaces of automorphic forms in characteristic $0$ and characteristic $p$. We prove that for Hodge-type Shimura varieties, the weight of any nonzero automorphic form in characteristic $0$ satisfies the Griffiths-Schmid conditions, by purely algebraic, characteristic $p$ methods. We state a conjecture for general Hodge-type Shimura varieties regarding the vanishing of the space of automorphic forms in characteristic $p$ in terms of the weight. We verify this conjecture for unitary PEL Shimura varieties of signature $(n-1,1)$ at a split prime.
Zagier introduced toroidal automorphic forms to study the zeros of zeta functions: an automorphic form on GL_2 is toroidal if all its right translates integrate to zero over all nonsplit tori in GL_2, and an Eisenstein series is toroidal if its weight is a zero of the zeta function of the corresponding field. We compute the space of such forms for the global function fields of class number one and genus g zero or one, and with a rational place. The space has dimension g and is spanned by the expected Eisenstein series. We deduce an "automorphic" proof for the Riemann hypothesis for the zeta fu…
We present a new flavor of TAF-type (co)homology theories, which are p-local of height two and based on the isometry group of the odd unimodular hermitian lattice of signature (1,1) over the Gaussian integers. Using a suitable family of hyperelliptic curves, we explicitly construct a genus to automorphic forms, prove an integrality statement and verify Landweber's criterion.
For several Hodge-type Shimura varieties of good reduction in characteristic $p$, we show that the cone of weights of automorphic forms is encoded by the stack of $G$-zips of Pink-Wedhorn-Ziegler. This establishes several instances of a general conjecture formulated in previous papers by the authors. Furthermore, we prove in these cases that any mod $p$ automorphic form whose weight lies in a specific region of the weight space is divisible by a partial Hasse invariant. This generalizes to other Shimura varieties previous results of Diamond--Kassaei on Hilbert modular forms.
Let $q$ be a prime power and $\mathbb{F}_q$ be the finite field with $q$ elements. In this article we investigate the space of unramified automorphic forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_n$ over the rational function field defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ (i.e.\ for $\mathbb{P}^1$ defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$). In particular, we prove that the space of unramified cusp form is trivial and (for $n=3$) that the space of eigenforms is one dimensional. Moreover, we show that there are no nontrivial unramified toroidal forms for $\mathrm{PGL}_3$ over $\mathbb{P}^1$ and conjecture that the space of all toroidal automor…
Using the general method which was applied to prove finiteness of the set of hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of elliptic and parabolic type, we classify all symmetric (and twisted to symmetric) hyperbolic generalized Cartan matrices of elliptic type and of rank 3 with a lattice Weyl vector. We develop the general theory of reflective lattices T with 2 negative squares and reflective automorphic forms on homogeneous domains of type IV defined by T. We consider this theory as mirror symmetric to the theory of elliptic and parabolic hyperbolic reflection groups and corresponding hyperbolic…
Let $G$ be a split semisimple group over a function field. We prove the temperedness at unramified places of automorphic representations of $G$, subject to a local assumption at one place, stronger than supercuspidality, and assuming the existence of cyclic base change with good properties. Our method relies on the geometry of $\operatorname{Bun}_G$. It is independent of the work of Lafforgue on the global Langlands correspondence.
We construct some families of automorphic forms on Grassmannians which have singularities along smaller sub Grassmannians, using Harvey and Moore's extension of the Howe (or theta) correspondence to modular forms with poles at cusps. Some of the applications are as follows. We construct families of holomorphic automorphic forms which can be written as infinite products, which give many new examples of generalized Kac-Moody superalgebras. We extend the Shimura and Maass-Gritsenko correspondences to modular forms with singularities. We prove some congruences satisfied by the theta functions of p…
Hyperbolic lattices are a new form of synthetic quantum matter in which particles effectively hop on a discrete tessellation of 2D hyperbolic space, a non-Euclidean space of uniform negative curvature. To describe the single-particle eigenstates and eigenenergies for hopping on such a lattice, a hyperbolic generalization of band theory was previously constructed, based on ideas from algebraic geometry. In this hyperbolic band theory, eigenstates are automorphic functions, and the Brillouin zone is a higher-dimensional torus, the Jacobian of the compactified unit cell understood as a higher-gen…
