Explicit determinations of several classes of trigonometric sums are given. These sums can be viewed as analogues or generalizations of Gauss sums. In a previous paper, two of the present authors considered primarily sine sums associated with primitive odd characters. In this paper, we establish two general theorems involving both sines and cosines, with more attention given to cosine sums in the several examples that we provide.
We evaluate some finite and infinite sums involving $q$-trigonometric and $q$-digamma functions. Upon letting $q$ approach $1$, one obtains corresponding sums for the classical trigonometric and the digamma functions. Our key argument is a theta product formula of Jacobi and Gosper's $q$-trigonometric identities.
We evaluate in closed form several classes of finite trigonometric sums. Two general methods are used. The first is new and involves sums of roots of unity. The second uses contour integration and extends a previous method used by two of the authors. Reciprocity theorems for certain trigonometric sums are also established.
Two classes of finite trigonometric sums, each involving only $\sin$'s, are evaluated in closed form. The previous and original proofs arise from Ramanujan's theta functions and modular equations.
We show that identities involving trigonometric sums recently proved by Harshitha, Vasuki and Yathirajsharma, using Ramanujan's theory of theta functions, were either already in the literature or can be proved easily by adapting results that can be found in the literature. Also we prove two conjectures given in that paper. After mentioning many other works dealing with identities for various trigonometric sums, we end this paper by describing an automated approach for proving such trigonometric identities.
We present the transformation of several sums of positive integer powers of the sine and cosine into non-trigonometric combinatorial forms. The results are applied to the derivation of generating functions and to the number of the closed walks on a path and in a cycle.
We prove several old and new theorems about finite sums involving characters and trigonometric functions. These sums can be traced back to theta function identities from Ramanujan's notebooks and were systematically first studied by Berndt and Zaharescu; their proofs involved complex contour integration. We show how to prove most of Berndt-Zaharescu's and some new identities by elementary methods of discrete Fourier Analysis.
We introduce some new higher dimensional generalizations of the Dedekind sums associated with the Bernoulli functions and of those Hardy sums which are defined by the sawtooth function. We generalize a variant of Parseval's formula for the discrete Fourier transform to derive finite trigonometric representations for these sums in a simple unified manner. We also consider a related sum involving the Hurwitz zeta function.
Finite trigonometric sums appear in various branches of Physics, Mathematics and their applications. For p; q to coprime positive integers and r we consider the finite trigonometric sums involving the product of three trigonometric functions.
We establish a new bound for the exponential sum \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{x\in\mathcal{X}}\Big|\sum_{y\in \mathcal{Y}}γ(y)\exp(2πi a λ^{xy}/p)\Big|, \end{eqnarray*} where $λ$ is an element of the residue ring modulo a large prime number $p,$ $\mathcal{X}$ and $\mathcal{Y}$ are arbitrary subsets of the residue ring modulo $p-1$ and $γ(n)$ are any complex numbers with $|γ(n)| \le 1.$ In particular, we improve several previously known bounds.
We obtain new trigonometric identities, which are some product-to-sum type formulas for the higher derivative of the cotangent and cosecant functions. Further, from specializations of our formulas, we derive not only various known reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums but also new reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums.

Let p be a prime = 3 (mod 4). A number of elegant number-theoretical properties of the sums T(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} tan(n^2π/p) and C(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} cot(n^2π/p) are proved. For example, T(p) equals p times the excess of the odd quadratic residues over the even ones in the set {1,2,...,p-1}; this number is positive if p = 3 (mod 8) and negative if p = 7 (mod 8). In this revised version the connection of these sums with the class-number h(-p) is also discussed. For example, a very simple formula expressing h(-p) by means of the aforementioned excess is proved. The bi…
Ramanujan's trigonometric sum $c_q(n)$ can be interpreted as a set of trigonometric moments of a finite measure concentrated at primitive $q$-th roots of unity with equal masses. This gives rise to sets of corresponding polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. We present explicit expressions of these polynomials for special values of $q$, e.g. when $q=p$ or $q=2p$ or $q=p^k$, where $p$ is a prime number. We generalize this procedure taking the Kronecker polynomial instead of cyclotomic one. In this case the moments are expressed as finite sums of $c_q(n)$ with different $q$.
Motivated by two identities published with Ramanujan's lost notebook and connected, respectively, with the Gauss circle problem and the Dirichlet divisor problem, in an earlier paper, three of the present authors derived representations for certain sums of products of trigonometric functions as double series of Bessel functions. These series are generalized in the present paper by introducing the novel notion of balanced derivatives, leading to further theorems. As we will see below, the regions of convergence in the unbalanced case are entirely different than those in the balanced case. From …
We examine the four Féjer-type trigonometric sums of the form \[S_n(x)=\sum_{k=1}^n \frac{f(g(kx))}{k}\qquad (0<x<π)\] where $f(x)$, $g(x)$ are chosen to be either $\sin x$ or $\cos x$. The analysis of the sums with $f(x)=g(x)=\cos x$, $f(x)=\cos x$, $g(x)=\sin x$ and $f(x)=\sin x$, $g(x)=\cos x$ is reasonably straightforward. It is shown that these sums exhibit unbounded growth as $n\to\infty$ and also present `spikes' in their graphs at certain $x$ values for which we give an explanation. The main effort is devoted to the case $f(x)=g(x)=\sin x$, where we present arguments that strongly supp…
We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ where $m$ and $v$ are positive integers. This method not only confirms the results obtained earlier by an empirical method, but it is also much more expedie…
In this paper we construct trigonometric functions of the sum T_{p}(h,k), which is called Dedekind type DC-(Dahee and Changhee) sums. We establish analytic properties of this sum. We find trigonometric representations of this sum. We prove reciprocity theorem of this sums. Furthermore, we obtain relations between the Clausen functions, Polylogarithm function, Hurwitz zeta function, generalized Lambert series (G-series), Hardy-Berndt sums and the sum T_{p}(h,k). We also give some applications related to these sums and functions.
Given an odd integer polynomial f(x) of a degree k >=3, we construct a non-negative valued, normed trigonometric polynomial with the spectrum in the set of integer values of f(x) not greater than n, and a small free coefficient a_{0}=O((\log n)^{-1/k}). This gives an alternative proof for the maximal possible cardinality of a set A, so that A-A does not contain an element of f(x). We also discuss other interpretations and an ergodic characterization of that bound.
In this paper, we study the polynomial Gauss sums over finite fields, and present an analogue of Davenport-Hasse's theorem for the entire polynomial Gauss sums, which is a generalization of the previous result obtained by Hayes.
In this paper, we will explicitly calculate Gauss sums for the general linear groups and the special linear groups over $\Bbb Z_n$, where $\Bbb Z_n=\Bbb Z/n \Bbb Z$ and $n>0$ is an integer. For $r$ being a positive integer, the formulae of Gauss sums for ${\rm GL}_r(\Bbb Z_n)$ can be expressed in terms of classical Gauss sums over $\Bbb Z_n$, while the formulae of Gauss sums for ${\rm SL}_r(\Bbb Z_n)$ can be expressed in terms of hyper-Kloosterman sums over $\Bbb Z_n$. As an application, we count the number of $r\times r$ invertible matrices over $\Bbb Z_n$ with given trace by using the the fo…
The main purpose of this paper is to study higher order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums weighted by $L$-functions using estimates for character sums and analytic methods. We find asymptotic formulas for three character sums which arise naturally in the study of higher order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums. We then use these character sum estimates to find asymptotic formulas for the $\nth{6}$ and $\nth{8}$ order moments of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums weighted by $L$-functions. Our asymptotic formulas satisfy a conjecture of Wenpeng Zhang.
It is well known that the classical Gauss sum, normalized by the square-root number of terms, takes only finitely many values. If one restricts the range of summation to a subinterval, a much richer structure emerges. We prove a limit law for the value distribution of such incomplete Gauss sums. The limit distribution is given by the distribution of a certain family of periodic functions. Our results complement Oskolkov's pointwise bounds for incomplete Gauss sums as well as the limit theorems for quadratic Weyl sums (theta sums) due to Jurkat and van Horne and the second author.
In the present paper we investigate the limiting behaviour of short incomplete Gauss sums at random argument as the number of terms goes to infinity. We prove that the limit distribution is given by the distribution of theta sums and differs from the limit law for long Gauss sums studied by the author and Marklof. The key ingredient in the proof is an equidistribution theorem for rational points on horocycles in the metaplectic cover of SL(2,R).
We obtain new elliptic function identities, which are an elliptic analogue of Fukuhara's trigonometric identities. We show that the coefficients of Laurent expansions at $z=0$ of our elliptic identities give rise to some reciprocity laws for elliptic Dedekind sums.

We define "splitting functions of level l" for any integer l>0. These functions generalize Dwork's splitting functions : they allow us to represent additive characters of order $p^l$. Then we use these functions to obtain a Stickleberger theorem on the $p$-adic valuation of new Gauss sums.
The main purpose of this article is to study higher power mean values of generalized quadratic Gauss sums using estimates for character sums, analytic method and algebraic geometric methods. In this article, we prove two conjectures which were proposed in \cite{BLZ}.
In this paper, using combinatorial and analytic methods, we prove an exact calculating formula on the $2m$-th power mean value of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums for $m\geq 2$. This solves a conjecture of He and Zhang [`On the $2k$-th power mean value of the generalized quadratic Gauss sums', Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 48 (2011), No.1, 9-15].
An elementary approach is shown which derives the values of the Gauss sums over $\mathbb F_{p^r}$, $p$ odd, of a cubic character without using Davenport-Hasse's theorem. New links between Gauss sums over different field extensions are shown in terms of factorizations of the Gauss sums themselves, which are then rivisited in terms of prime ideal decompositions. Interestingly, one of these results gives a representation of primes $p$ of the form $6k+1$ by a binary quadratic form in integers of a subfield of the cyclotomic field of the $p$-th roots of unity.
We consider a generalized Gauss sum supported on matrices over a number field. We evaluate this Gauss sum and relate it to the number of totally isotropic subspaces of related quadratic spaces. Then we consider a further generalization of such a Gauss sum, realizing its value in terms of numbers of totally isotropic subspaces of related quadratic spaces.
We investigate the distribution of the angles of Gauss sums attached to the cuspidal representations of general linear groups over finite fields. In particular we show that they happen to be equidistributed w.r.t.the Haar measure. However, for representations of $PGL_2(\mathbb F_q)$, they are clustered around $1$ and $-1$ for odd $p$ and around $1$ for $p=2$.
Let $p$ be a prime number, $q=p^f$ for some positive integer $f$, $N$ be a positive integer such that $\gcd(N,p)=1$, and let $\k$ be a primitive multiplicative character of order $N$ over finite field $\fq$. This paper studies the problem of explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in "\textsl{index 2 case}" (i.e. $f=\f{\p(N)}{2}=[\zn:\pp]$, where $\p(\cd)$ is Euler function). Firstly, the classification of the Gauss sums in index 2 case is presented. Then, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums $G(\k^\la) (1\laN-1)$ in index 2 case with order $N$ being general even integer (i.e. $N=2^{r}\cd N_0$ wher…
We obtain a new bound for incomplete Gauss sums modulo primes. Our argument falls under the framework of Vinogradov's method which we use to reduce the problem under consideration to bounding the number of solutions to two distinct systems of congruences. The first is related to Vinogradov's mean value theorem, although the second does not appear to have been considered before. Our bound improves on current results in the range $N\ge q^{2k^{-1/2}+O(k^{-3/2})}$.
Recently, the explicit evaluation of Gauss sums in the index 2 and 4 cases have been given in several papers (see [2,3,7,8]). In the course of evaluation, the sigh (or unit root) ambiguities are unavoidably occurred. This paper presents another method, different from [7] and [8], to determine the sigh (unit root) ambiguities of Gauss sums in the index 2 case, as well as the ones with odd order in the non-cyclic index 4 case. And we note that the method in this paper are more succinct and effective than [8] and [7].
We use techniques of relative algebraic K-theory to develop a common refinement of the existing theories of metrized and hermitian Galois structures in arithmetic. As a first application of this very general approach, we then use it to prove several new results, and to formulate a framework of new conjectures, concerning the detailed arithmetic properties of wildly ramified Galois-Gauss sums.
An elementary approach is shown which derives the value of the Gauss sum of a cubic character over a finite field $\mathbb F_{2^s}$ without using Davenport-Hasse's theorem (namely, if $s$ is odd the Gauss sum is -1, and if $s$ is even its value is $-(-2)^{s/2}$).
We present an explicit evaluation of the double Gauss sum $\displaystyle G(a,b,c;S;p^n):=\sum_{x,y=0}^{p^n-1} e^{2πi S(ax^2+bxy+cy^2)/p^n}$, where $a, b, c$ are integers such that $\gcd(a,b,c)=1$, $p$ is a prime, $n$ is a positive integer, and $S$ is an integer coprime to $p$.
We show that for any mod $p^m$ characters, $χ_1, \dots, χ_k,$ the Jacobi sum, $$ \sum_{x_1=1}^{p^m}\dots \sum_{\substack{x_k=1\\x_1+\dots+x_k=B}}^{p^m}χ_1(x_1)\dots χ_k(x_k), $$ has a simple evaluation when $m$ is sufficiently large (for $m\geq 2$ if $p\nmid B$). As part of the proof we give a simple evaluation of the mod $p^m$ Gauss sums when $m\geq 2$.
Bley, Burns and Hahn used relative algebraic $K$-theory methods to formulate a precise conjectural link between the (second Adams-operator twisted) Galois-Gauss sums of weakly ramified Artin characters and the square root of the inverse different of finite, odd degree, Galois extensions of number fields. We provide concrete new evidence for this conjecture in the setting of extensions of odd prime-power degree by using a refined version of a well-known result of Ullom.
We obtain several estimates for bilinear form with Kloosterman sums. Such results can be interpreted as a measure of cancellations amongst with parameters from short intervals. In particular, for certain ranges of parameters we improve some recent results of Blomer, Fouvry, Kowalski, Michel and Milićević and also of Fouvry, Kowalski and Michel. In particular, we improve the bound on the error term in the asymptotic formula for mixed moments of $L$-series associated with Hecke eigenforms.
In the past two decades, many researchers have studied {\it index $2$} Gauss sums, where the group generated by the characteristic $p$ of the underling finite field is of index $2$ in the unit group of ${\mathbb Z}/m{\mathbb Z}$ for the order $m$ of the multiplicative character involved. A complete solution to the problem of evaluating index $2$ Gauss sums was given by Yang and Xia~(2010). In particular, it is known that some nonzero integral powers of the Gauss sums in this case are in quadratic fields. On the other hand, Chowla~(1962), McEliece~(1974), Evans~(1977, 1981) and Aoki~(1997, 2004…
In this note, we give explicit expressions of Gauss sums for general (resp. special) linear groups over finite fields, which involves Gauss sums (resp. Kloosterman sums). The key ingredient is averaging such sums over Borel subgroups. As applications, we count the number of invertible matrices of zero-trace over finite fields and we also improve two bounds by Ferguson, Hoffman, Luca, Ostafe and Shparlinski in [ Some additive combinatorics problems in matrix rings, Rev. Mat. Complut. (23) 2010, 501--513 ].
A number of new terminating series involving $\sin(n^2/k)$ and $\cos(n^2/k)$ are presented and connected to Gauss quadratic sums. Several new closed forms of generic Gauss quadratic sums are obtained and previously known results are generalized.
The increasing rate of the Birkhoff sums in the infinite iterated function systems with polynomial decay of the derivative (for example the Gauss map) is studied. For different unbounded potential functions, the Hausdorff dimensions of the sets of points whose Birkhoff sums share the same increasing rate are obtained.
In this paper, we give constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs and skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and our results generalize ten of the eleven sporadic examples of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs given by Schmidt and White [24] and several of subfield examples into infinite families. These infinite families of strongly regular graphs have new parameters. The main tools that we employed are relative Gauss sums instead of explicit evaluations of Gauss sums.
This is a sequel to math.AG/0003009. Here we study identities for the Fourier transform of "elementary functions" over finite field containing "exponents" of monomial rational functions. It turns out that these identities are governed by monomial identities between Gauss sums. We show that similar to the case of complex numbers such identities correspond to linear relations between certain divisors on the space of multiplicative characters.
Berry and Klein (J. Mod. Opt. (1997) 43 2139-2164) showed that the Talbot effects in classical optics are naturally explained by Gauss sums studied in number theory. Their result was based on Helmholtz equation. In this article, we explain the effect based on Fresnel integral also by Gauss sums. These two explanations are shown to agree with by the reciprocity law of Gauss sums. The relation between this agreement and the wave-particle complementarity is also discussed.
First we reprove two results in additive number theory due to Dombi and Chen & Wang, respectively, on the number of representations of n as the sum of two odious or evil numbers, using techniques from automata theory and logic. We also use this technique to prove a new result about the numbers represented by five summands. Furthermore, we prove some new results on the tenfold sums of the evil and odious numbers, as well as k-fold sums of similar sequences of integers, by using techniques of analytic number theory involving trigonometric sums associated with the (+-1)-characteristic sequences o…
