Several methods are used to evaluate finite trigonometric sums. In each case, either the sum had not previously been evaluated, or it had been evaluated, but only by analytic means, e.g., by complex analysis or modular transformation formulas. We establish both reciprocity and three sum relations for trigonometric sums. Motivated by certain sums that we have evaluated, we add coprime conditions to the summands and thereby define analogues of Ramanujan sums, which we in turn evaluate. One of these analogues leads to a criterion for the Riemann Hypothesis, analogous to the Franel-Landau criterion.
We evaluate some finite and infinite sums involving $q$-trigonometric and $q$-digamma functions. Upon letting $q$ approach $1$, one obtains corresponding sums for the classical trigonometric and the digamma functions. Our key argument is a theta product formula of Jacobi and Gosper's $q$-trigonometric identities.
We evaluate in closed form several classes of finite trigonometric sums. Two general methods are used. The first is new and involves sums of roots of unity. The second uses contour integration and extends a previous method used by two of the authors. Reciprocity theorems for certain trigonometric sums are also established.
Two classes of finite trigonometric sums, each involving only $\sin$'s, are evaluated in closed form. The previous and original proofs arise from Ramanujan's theta functions and modular equations.
We show that identities involving trigonometric sums recently proved by Harshitha, Vasuki and Yathirajsharma, using Ramanujan's theory of theta functions, were either already in the literature or can be proved easily by adapting results that can be found in the literature. Also we prove two conjectures given in that paper. After mentioning many other works dealing with identities for various trigonometric sums, we end this paper by describing an automated approach for proving such trigonometric identities.
Explicit determinations of several classes of trigonometric sums are given. These sums can be viewed as analogues or generalizations of Gauss sums. In a previous paper, two of the present authors considered primarily sine sums associated with primitive odd characters. In this paper, we establish two general theorems involving both sines and cosines, with more attention given to cosine sums in the several examples that we provide.
We present the transformation of several sums of positive integer powers of the sine and cosine into non-trigonometric combinatorial forms. The results are applied to the derivation of generating functions and to the number of the closed walks on a path and in a cycle.
We prove several old and new theorems about finite sums involving characters and trigonometric functions. These sums can be traced back to theta function identities from Ramanujan's notebooks and were systematically first studied by Berndt and Zaharescu; their proofs involved complex contour integration. We show how to prove most of Berndt-Zaharescu's and some new identities by elementary methods of discrete Fourier Analysis.
We introduce some new higher dimensional generalizations of the Dedekind sums associated with the Bernoulli functions and of those Hardy sums which are defined by the sawtooth function. We generalize a variant of Parseval's formula for the discrete Fourier transform to derive finite trigonometric representations for these sums in a simple unified manner. We also consider a related sum involving the Hurwitz zeta function.
Finite trigonometric sums appear in various branches of Physics, Mathematics and their applications. For p; q to coprime positive integers and r we consider the finite trigonometric sums involving the product of three trigonometric functions.
We establish a new bound for the exponential sum \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{x\in\mathcal{X}}\Big|\sum_{y\in \mathcal{Y}}γ(y)\exp(2πi a λ^{xy}/p)\Big|, \end{eqnarray*} where $λ$ is an element of the residue ring modulo a large prime number $p,$ $\mathcal{X}$ and $\mathcal{Y}$ are arbitrary subsets of the residue ring modulo $p-1$ and $γ(n)$ are any complex numbers with $|γ(n)| \le 1.$ In particular, we improve several previously known bounds.
We obtain new trigonometric identities, which are some product-to-sum type formulas for the higher derivative of the cotangent and cosecant functions. Further, from specializations of our formulas, we derive not only various known reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums but also new reciprocity laws of generalized Dedekind sums.

Let p be a prime = 3 (mod 4). A number of elegant number-theoretical properties of the sums T(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} tan(n^2π/p) and C(p) = \sqrt{p}sum_{n=1}^{(p-1)/2} cot(n^2π/p) are proved. For example, T(p) equals p times the excess of the odd quadratic residues over the even ones in the set {1,2,...,p-1}; this number is positive if p = 3 (mod 8) and negative if p = 7 (mod 8). In this revised version the connection of these sums with the class-number h(-p) is also discussed. For example, a very simple formula expressing h(-p) by means of the aforementioned excess is proved. The bi…
Ramanujan's trigonometric sum $c_q(n)$ can be interpreted as a set of trigonometric moments of a finite measure concentrated at primitive $q$-th roots of unity with equal masses. This gives rise to sets of corresponding polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. We present explicit expressions of these polynomials for special values of $q$, e.g. when $q=p$ or $q=2p$ or $q=p^k$, where $p$ is a prime number. We generalize this procedure taking the Kronecker polynomial instead of cyclotomic one. In this case the moments are expressed as finite sums of $c_q(n)$ with different $q$.
Motivated by two identities published with Ramanujan's lost notebook and connected, respectively, with the Gauss circle problem and the Dirichlet divisor problem, in an earlier paper, three of the present authors derived representations for certain sums of products of trigonometric functions as double series of Bessel functions. These series are generalized in the present paper by introducing the novel notion of balanced derivatives, leading to further theorems. As we will see below, the regions of convergence in the unbalanced case are entirely different than those in the balanced case. From …
We examine the four Féjer-type trigonometric sums of the form \[S_n(x)=\sum_{k=1}^n \frac{f(g(kx))}{k}\qquad (0<x<π)\] where $f(x)$, $g(x)$ are chosen to be either $\sin x$ or $\cos x$. The analysis of the sums with $f(x)=g(x)=\cos x$, $f(x)=\cos x$, $g(x)=\sin x$ and $f(x)=\sin x$, $g(x)=\cos x$ is reasonably straightforward. It is shown that these sums exhibit unbounded growth as $n\to\infty$ and also present `spikes' in their graphs at certain $x$ values for which we give an explanation. The main effort is devoted to the case $f(x)=g(x)=\sin x$, where we present arguments that strongly supp…
We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ We present a new and elegant integral approach to computing the Gardner-Fisher trigonometric power sum, which is given by $$ S_{m,v}=\left(\frac π{2m}\right)^{2v}\sum_{k=1}^{m-1}\cos^{-2v}\left(\frac{kπ}{2m}\right)\, , $$ where $m$ and $v$ are positive integers. This method not only confirms the results obtained earlier by an empirical method, but it is also much more expedie…
In this paper we construct trigonometric functions of the sum T_{p}(h,k), which is called Dedekind type DC-(Dahee and Changhee) sums. We establish analytic properties of this sum. We find trigonometric representations of this sum. We prove reciprocity theorem of this sums. Furthermore, we obtain relations between the Clausen functions, Polylogarithm function, Hurwitz zeta function, generalized Lambert series (G-series), Hardy-Berndt sums and the sum T_{p}(h,k). We also give some applications related to these sums and functions.
In previous works, we presented series representations for $π^3$ and $π^5$, in which the prefactor depends only on the golden ratio appears. In this article, we derive a general relation involving trigonometric functions and an infinite series. Such an identity is likely to provide many series representations for any positive power of $π$, among them the above mentioned representations for $π^3$ and $π^5$.
We obtain new elliptic function identities, which are an elliptic analogue of Fukuhara's trigonometric identities. We show that the coefficients of Laurent expansions at $z=0$ of our elliptic identities give rise to some reciprocity laws for elliptic Dedekind sums.
We formulate a conjecture concerning spectral factorization of a class of trigonometric polynomials of two variables and prove it for special cases. Our method uses relations between the distribution of values of a polynomial of two variables and the distributions of values of an associated family of polynomials of one variable. We suggest an approach to prove the full conjecture using relations between the distribution of values and the distribution of roots of polynomials.
Ohno's relation is a well-known family of relations among multiple zeta values, which can naturally be regarded as a type of duality for a certain power series which we call an Ohno sum. In this paper, we investigate $\mathbb{Q}$-linear relations among Ohno sums which are not contained in Ohno's relation. We prove two new families of such relations, and pose several further conjectural families of such relations.
We show that Euler's relation and the Taxi-Cab relation are both solutions of the same equation. General solutions of sums of two consecutive cubes equaling the sum of two other cubes are calculated. There is an infinite number of relations to be found among the sums of two consecutive cubes and the sum of two other cubes, in the form of two families. Their recursive and parametric equations are calculated.
In this paper, we prove a conjecture of Chan and Chua for the number of representations of integers as sums of 8s integral squares. The proof uses a theorem of Imamoglu and Kohnen, and the double shuffle relations satisfied by the double Eisenstein series of level 2.
We establish the mapping relations between analytic functions and periodic functions using the abstract operators $\cos(h\partial_x)$ and $\sin(h\partial_x)$, including the mapping relations between power series and trigonometric series, and by using such mapping relations we obtain a general method to find the sum function of a trigonometric series. According to this method, if each coefficient of a power series is respectively equal to that of a trigonometric series, then if we know the sum function of the power series, we can obtain that of the trigonometric series, and the non-analytical p…
We consider the rational linear relations between real numbers whose squared trigonometric functions have rational values, angles we call ``geodetic''. We construct a convenient basis for the vector space over Q generated by these angles. Geodetic angles and rational linear combinations of geodetic angles appear naturally in Euclidean geometry; for illustration we apply our results to equidecomposability of polyhedra.
This thesis contains some new results on the uniform rationality of Poincaré series of p-adic equivalence relations and Igusa's conjecture on exponential sums
In this paper we study the relation between the function $J_{4_1,0}$, which arises from a quantum invariant of the figure-eight knot, and Sudler's trigonometric product. We find $J_{4_1,0}$ up to a constant factor along continued fraction convergents to a quadratic irrational, and we show that its asymptotics deviates from the universal limiting behavior that has been found by Bettin and Drappeau in the case of large partial quotients. We relate the value of $J_{4_1,0}$ to that of Sudler's trigonometric product, and establish asymptotic upper and lower bounds for such Sudler products in respon…
