In this paper we define an intrinsic notion of principal for the Hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds. More precisely, the principal symbol of a \psivdo appears as a homogeneous section over the linear dual of the tangent Lie algebra bundle of the manifold. This definition is an important step towards using global $K$-theoretic tools in the Heisenberg setting, such as those involved in the elliptic setting for proving the Atiyah-Singer index theorem or the regularity of the eta invariant. On the other hand, the intrinsic definition of the principal symbol enables us to give an intrinsic sense to the model operator of \psivdo at point and to give a definitive proof that the Heisenberg calculus is modelled at each point by the calculus of left-invariant \psidos on the tangent group at the point. This also allows us to define an intrinsic Rockland condition for \psivdos which is shown to be equivalent to the invertibility of the principal symbol, provided that the Levi form has constant rank. Furthermore, we review the main hypoellipticity results on Heisenberg manifolds in terms of the results of the paper. In particular, we complete the treatment of the Kohn Laplacian by Beals-Greiner and establish that for the horizontal sublaplacian the invertibility of the principal symbol is equivalent to some condition on the Levi form, called condition $X(k)$. Incidentally, this paper provides us with a relatively up-to-date overview of the main facts about the Heisenberg calculus.
This memoir deals with the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds, or Heisenberg calculus. The Heisenberg manifolds generalize CR and contact manifolds and in this context the main differential operators at stake include the Hörmander's sum of squares, the Kohn Laplacian, the horizontal sublaplacian and its conformal powers and the contact Laplacian. These operators cannot be elliptic and the relevant pseudodifferential calculus to study them is provided by the Heisenberg calculus. The aim of this monograph is threefold. First, we give an intrinsic approach to the Heisenberg calculus by…
We explore the geometry that underlies the osculating nilpotent group structures of the Heisenberg calculus. For a smooth manifold $M$ with a distribution $H\subseteq TM$ analysts use explicit (and rather complicated) coordinate formulas to define the nilpotent groups that are central to the calculus. Our aim in this paper is to provide insight in the intrinsic geometry that underlies these coordinate formulas. First, we introduce `parabolic arrows' as a generalization of tangent vectors. The definition of parabolic arrows involves a mix of first and second order derivatives. Parabolic arrows …
In this note we present a symbolic pseudo-differential calculus on the Heisenberg group. We particularise to this group our general construction [4,3,2] of pseudo-differential calculi on graded groups. The relation between the Weyl quantization and the representations of the Heisenberg group enables us to consider here scalar-valued symbols. We find that the conditions defining the symbol classes are similar but different to the ones in [1]. Applications are given to Schwartz hypoellipticity and to subelliptic estimates on the Heisenberg group.
A class of pseudodifferential operators on the Heisenberg group is defined. As it should be, this class is an algebra containing the class of differential operators. Furthermore, those pseudodifferential operators act continuously on Sobolev spaces and the loss of derivatives may be controled by the order of the operator. Although a large number of works have been devoted in the past to the construction and the study of algebras of variable-coefficient operators, including some very interesting works on the Heisenberg group, our approach is different, and in particular puts into light microloc…

We study the composition of time-ffrequency localization operators (wavepacket operators) and develop a symbolic calculus of such operators on modulation spaces. The use of time-frequency methods (phase space methods) allows the use of rough symbols of ultra-rapid growth in place of smooth symbols in the standard classes. As the main application it is shown that, in general, a localization operators possesses the Fredholm property, and thus its range is closed in the target space.
This paper is part of a series papers devoted to geometric and spectral theoretic applications of the hypoelliptic calculus on Heisenberg manifolds. More specifically, in this paper we make use of the Heisenberg calculus of Beals-Greiner and Taylor to analyze the spectral theory of hypoelliptic operators on Heisenberg manifolds. The main results of this paper include: (i) Obtaining complex powers of hypoelliptic operators as holomorphic families of Psi_{H}DO's, which can be used to define a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces interpolating the weighted Sobolev spaces of Folland-Stein and providin…
We develop our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for representations of infinite-dimensional Lie groups by establishing continuity properties of the Moyal product for symbols belonging to various modulation spaces. For instance, we prove that the modulation space of symbols $M^{\infty,1}$ is an associative Banach algebra and the corrresponding operators are bounded. We then apply the abstract results to two classes of representations, namely the unitary irreducible representations of nilpotent Lie groups, and the natural representations of the semidirect product groups that govern the magn…
Polyhomogeneous symbols, defined by Kohn-Nirenberg and Hörmander in the 60's, play a central role in the symbolic calculus of most pseudodifferential calculi. We prove a simple characterisation of polyhomogeneous functions which avoids the use of asymptotic expansions. Specifically, if $U$ is open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$, then a polyhomogeneous symbol on $U \times \mathbb{R}^d$ is precisely the restriction to $t=1$ of a function on $U \times \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ which is homogeneous for the dilations of $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ modulo Schwartz class functions. This result holds for arbitrary graded di…
This paper deals with positivity properties for a pseudodifferential calculus, generalizing Weyl's classical quantization, and set on an infinite dimensional phase space, the Wiener space. In this frame, we show that a positive symbol does not, in general, give a positive operator. In order to measure the nonpositivity, we establish a Gårding's inequality, which holds for the symbol classes at hand. Nevertheless, for symbols with radial aspects, additional assumptions ensure the positivity of the associated operator.
We outline an abstract approach to the pseudo-differential Weyl calculus for operators in function spaces in infinitely many variables. Our earlier approach to the Weyl calculus for Lie group representations is extended to the case of representations associated with infinite-dimensional coadjoint orbits. We illustrate the approach by the case of infinite-dimensional Heisenberg groups. The classical Weyl-Hörmander calculus is recovered for the Schrödinger representations of the finite-dimensional Heisenberg groups.
In this paper, we present first results of our investigation regarding symbolic pseudo-differential calculi on nilpotent Lie groups. On any graded Lie group, we define classes of symbols using difference operators. The operators are obtained from these symbols via the natural quantisation given by the representation theory. They form an algebra of operators which shares many properties with the usual Hormander calculus.
The construction, in [AJN], of a pseudodifferential calculus analogous to the Weyl calculus, in an infinite dimensional setting, required the introduction of convenient classes of symbols. In this article, we proceed with the study of these classes in order to establish, later on, the properties that a pseudodifferential calculus is expected to satisfy. The introduction and the study of a new class are rendered necessary in view of applications in QED. We prove here that the symbols of both classes and the terms of their Taylorexpansions admit stochastic extensions. We define, in this infinite…
The purpose of this note is to compare the properties of the symbolic pseudo-differential calculus on the Heisenberg and on the Engel groups; nilpotent Lie groups of 2-step and 3-step, respectively. Here we provide a preliminary analysis of the structure and of the symbolic calculus with symbols parametrized by $(λ,μ)$ on the Engel group, while for the case of the Heisenberg group we recall the analogous results on the $λ$-classes of symbols.
We revisit the celebrated Peierls-Onsager substitution employing the magnetic pseudo-differential calculus for weak magnetic fields with no spatial decay conditions, when the non-magnetic symbols have a certain spatial periodicity. We show in great generality that the symbol of the magnetic band Hamiltonian admits a convergent expansion. Moreover, if the non-magnetic band Hamiltonian admits a localized composite Wannier basis, we show that the magnetic band Hamiltonian is unitarily equivalent to a Hofstadter-like magnetic matrix. In addition, if the magnetic field perturbation is slowly variab…
The knowledge of quantum phase flow induced under the Weyl's association rule by the evolution of Heisenberg operators of canonical coordinates and momenta allows to find the evolution of symbols of generic Heisenberg operators. The quantum phase flow curves obey the quantum Hamilton's equations and play the role of characteristics. At any fixed level of accuracy of semiclassical expansion, quantum characteristics can be constructed by solving a coupled system of first-order ordinary differential equations for quantum trajectories and generalized Jacobi fields. Classical and quantum constraint…
We present in this paper the construction of a pseudodifferential calculus on smooth non-compact manifolds associated to a globally defined and coordinate independant complete symbol calculus, that generalizes the standard pseudodifferential calculus on $\R^n$. We consider the case of manifolds $M$ with linearization in the sense of Bokobza-Haggiag, such that the associated (abstract) exponential map provides global diffeomorphisms of $M$ with $\R^n$ at any point. Cartan--Hadamard manifolds are special cases of such manifolds. The abstract exponential map encodes a notion of infinity on the ma…
We construct an abstract pseudodifferential calculus with operator-valued symbol, adapted to the treatment of Coulomb-type interactions, and we apply it to study the quantum evolution of molecules in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, in the case where the electronic Hamiltonian admits a local gap in its spectrum. In particular, we show that the molecular evolution can be reduced to the one of a system of smooth semiclassical operators, the symbol of which can be computed explicitely. In addition, we study the propagation of certain wave packets up to long time values of Ehrenfest order. (Thi…
In this work, we consider fixed $1/2$ spin particles interacting with the quantized radiation field in the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED). We investigate the time evolution operator in studying the reduced propagator (interaction picture). We first prove that this propagator belongs to the class of infinite dimensional Weyl pseudodifferential operators recently introduced in \cite {A-J-N} on Wiener spaces. We give a semiclassical expansion of the symbol of the reduced propagator up to any order with estimates on the remainder terms. Next, taking into account analyticity properties fo…
We extend the classical regularity theorem of elliptic operators to maximally hypoelliptic differential operators. More precisely, given vector fields $X_1,\ldots,X_m$ on a smooth manifold which satisfy Hörmander's bracket generating condition, we define a principal symbol for \textit{any} linear differential operator. Our symbol takes into account the vector fields $X_i$ and their commutators. We show that for an arbitrary differential operator, its principal symbol is invertible if and only if the operator is maximally hypoelliptic. This answers affirmatively a conjecture due to Helffer and …
In this note we point out and fill a gap in the proof by Julg-Kasparov of the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients for discrete subgroups of $\op{SU}(n,1)$. The issue at stake is the proof that the complex powers of the contact Laplacian are element of the Heisenberg calculus. In particular, we explain why we cannot implement into the setting of the Heisenberg calculus the classical Seeley's approach to complex powers.
One can argue that on flat space $\mathbb{R}^d$ the Weyl quantization is the most natural choice and that it has the best properties (e.g. symplectic covariance, real symbols correspond to Hermitian operators). On a generic manifold, there is no distinguished quantization, and a quantization is typically defined chart-wise. Here we introduce a quantization that, we believe, has the best properties for studying natural operators on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. It is a generalization of the Weyl quantization - we call it the balanced geodesic Weyl quantization. Among other things, we prove that …
