We investigate the distribution of the depth of a node containing a specific key or, equivalently, the number of steps needed to retrieve an item stored in a randomly grown binary search tree. Using a representation in terms of mixed and compounded standard distributions, we derive approximations by Poisson and mixed Poisson distributions; these lead to asymptotic normality results. We are particularly interested in the influence of the key value on the distribution of the node depth. Methodologically our message is that the explicit representation may provide additional insight if compared to the standard approach that is based on the recursive structure of the trees. Further, in order to exhibit the influence of the key on the distributional asymptotics, a suitable choice of distance of probability distributions is important. Our results are also applicable in connection with the number of recursions needed in Hoare's [Comm. ACM 4 (1961) 321-322] selection algorithm Find.
Some martingale characterizations of compound mixed Poisson processes are proven, extending S. Watanabe's (1964) martingale characterization of Poisson processes as well as the main result of Lyberopoulos and Macheras (2012), concerning martingale characterizations of mixed Poisson processes.
In this paper, we show that the mixed fractional Poisson process (MFPP) exhibits the long-range dependence (LRD) property. It is proved by establishing an asymptotic result for the covariance of inverse mixed stable subordinator. Also, it is shown that the increments of the MFPP, namely, the mixed fractional Poissonian noise (MFPN) has the short-range dependence (SRD) property.
Under mild assumptions the equivalence of the mixed Poisson process with mixing parameter a real-valued random variable to the one with mixing distribution as well as to the mixed Poisson process in the sense of Huang is obtained, and a characterization of each one of the above mixed Poisson processes in terms of disintegrations is provided. Moreover, some examples of "canonical" probability spaces admitting counting processes satisfying the equivalence of all above statements are given. Finally, it is shown that our assumptions are essential for the characterization of mixed Poisson processes…
By using the Mecke identity, we study a class of birth-death type Dirichlet forms associated with the mixed Poisson measure. Both Poincaré and weak Poincaré inequalities are established, while another Poincaré type inequality is disproved under some reasonable assumptions.
We propose Mecke-Palm formulas for multiple integrals with respect to a Poisson random measure interlaced with its intensity measure. We apply such formulas to multiple mixed Lévy systems of Lévy processes and obtain moment formulas for products of interlaced multiple Poisson integrals.
A characterization of mixed Poisson processes in terms of disintegrations is proven. As a consequence some further characterizations of such processes via claim interarrival processes, martingales and claim measures are obtained. Some revisions are required
In the paper, upper bounds for the rate of convergence in laws of large numbers for mixed Poisson random sums are constructed. As a measure of the distance between the limit and pre-limit laws, the Zolotarev $ζ$-metric is used. The obtained results extend the known convergence rate estimates for geometric random sums (in the famous R{é}nyi theorem) to a considerably wider class of random indices with mixed Poisson distributions including, e. g., those with the (generalized) negative binomial distribution.
If a given aggregate process $S$ is a compound mixed Poisson process under a probability measure $P$, a characterization of all probability measures $Q$ on the domain of $P$, such that $P$ and $Q$ are progressively equivalent and $S$ remains a compound mixed Poisson process with improved properties, is provided. This result generalizes earlier work of Delbaen & Haezendonck (1989). Implications related to the computation of premium calculation principles in an insurance market possessing the property of no free lunch with vanishing risk are also discussed.
Using Malliavin operators together with an interpolation technique inspired by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon (1989), we prove a new inequality on the Poisson space, allowing one to measure the distance between the laws of a general random vector, and of a target random element composed of Gaussian and Poisson random variables. Several consequences are deduced from this result, in particular: (1) new abstract criteria for multidimensional stable convergence on the Poisson space, (2) a class of mixed limit theorems, involving both Poisson and Gaussian limits, (3) criteria for the asymptotic inde…
We consider two fractional versions of a family of nonnegative integer valued processes. We prove that their probability mass functions solve fractional Kolmogorov forward equations, and we show the overdispersion of these processes. As particular examples in this family, we can define fractional versions of some processes in the literature as the Polya-Aeppli, the Poisson Inverse Gaussian and the Negative Binomial. We also define and study some more general fractional versions with two fractional parameters.
Stacy distribution defined for the first time in 1961 provides a flexible framework for modelling of a wide range of real-life behaviours. It appears under different names in the scientific literature and contains many useful particular cases. Homogeneous Poisson processes are appropriate apriori models for the number of renewals up to a given time $t>0$. This paper mixes them and considers a Mixed Poisson process with Stacy mixing variable. We call it a Poisson-Stacy process. The resulting counting process is one of the Generalised Negative Binomial processes, and the distribution of its time…
By a modification of the method that was applied in (Korolev and Shevtsova, 2009), here the inequalities $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le\frac{0.335789(β^3+0.425)}{\sqrt{n}}$$ and $$ρ(F_n,Φ)\le \frac{0.3051(β^3+1)}{\sqrt{n}} $$ are proved for the uniform distance $ρ(F_n,Φ)$ between the standard normal distribution function $Φ$ and the distribution function $F_n$ of the normalized sum of an arbitrary number $n\ge1$ of independent identically distributed random variables with zero mean, unit variance and finite third absolute moment $β^3$. The first of these inequalities sharpens the best known version of the clas…
In this article we survey properties of mixed Poisson distributions and probabilistic aspects of the Stirling transform: given a non-negative random variable $X$ with moment sequence $(μ_s)_{s\in\mathbb{N}}$ we determine a discrete random variable $Y$, whose moment sequence is given by the Stirling transform of the sequence $(μ_s)_{s\in\mathbb{N}}$, and identify the distribution as a mixed Poisson distribution. We discuss properties of this family of distributions and present a simple limit theorem based on expansions of factorial moments instead of power moments. Moreover, we present several …
In this paper we study Backward Stochastic Differential Equations with two reflecting right continuous with left limits obstacles (or barriers) when the noise is given by Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure mutually independent. The jumps of the obstacle processes could be either predictable or inaccessible. We show existence and uniqueness of the solution when the barriers are completely separated and the generator uniformly Lipschitz. We do not assume the existence of a difference of supermartingales between the obstacles. As an application, we show that the related mixed zero-sum d…
A common assumption when modeling queuing systems is that arrivals behave like a Poisson process with constant parameter. In practice, however, call arrivals are often observed to be significantly overdispersed. This motivates that in this paper we consider a mixed Poisson arrival process with arrival rates that are resampled every $N^{a}$ time units, where $a> 0$ and $N$ a scaling parameter. In the first part of the paper we analyse the asymptotic tail distribution of this doubly stochastic arrival process. That is, for large $N$ and i.i.d. arrival rates $X_1, \dots, X_N$, we focus on the eva…
In this paper we obtain the limit distribution for partial sums with a random number of terms following a class of mixed Poisson distributions. The resulting weak limit is a mixing between a normal distribution and an exponential family, which we call by normal exponential family (NEF) laws. A new stability concept is introduced and a relationship between α-stable distributions and NEF laws is established. We propose estimation of the parameters of the NEF models through the method of moments and also by the maximum likelihood method, which is performed via an Expectation-Maximization algorith…
In this paper we study a wide and flexible family of discrete distributions, the so-called generalized negative binomial (GNB) distributions that are mixed Poisson distributions in which the mixing laws belong to the class of generalized gamma (GG) distributions. The latter was introduced by E. W. Stacy as a special family of lifetime distributions containing gamma, exponential power and Weibull distributions. These distributions seem to be very promising in the statistical description of many real phenomena being very convenient and almost universal models for the description of statistical r…
Using Stein's method and the Malliavin calculus of variations, we derive explicit estimates for the Gamma approximation of functionals of a Poisson measure. In particular, conditions are presented under which the distribution of a sequence of multiple Wiener-Ito stochastic integrals with respect to a compensated Poisson measure converges to a Gamma distribution. As an illustration, we present a quantitative version and a non-central extension of a classical theorem by de Jong in the case of degenerate U-statistics of order two. Several multidimensional extensions, in particular allowing for mi…
Extreme values are considered in samples with random size that has a mixed Poisson distribution being generated by a doubly stochastic Poisson process. We prove some inequalities providing bounds on the rate of convergence in limit theorems for the distributions of max-compound Cox processes.

In this paper, we derive an explicit sample size formula based a mixed criterion of absolute and relative errors for estimating means of Poisson random variables.
In the stochastic network model of Britton and Lindholm [Dynamic random networks in dynamic populations. Journal of Statistical Physics, 2010], the number of individuals evolves according to a supercritical linear birth and death process, and a random social index is assigned to each individual at birth, which controls the rate at which connections to other individuals are created. We derive a rate for the convergence of the degree distribution in this model towards the mixed Poisson distribution determined by Britton and Lindholm based on heuristic arguments. In order to do so, we deduce the …
In this work, we study the partial sums of independent and identically distributed random variables with the number of terms following a fractional Poisson (FP) distribution. The FP sum contains the Poisson and geometric summations as particular cases. We show that the weak limit of the FP summation, when properly normalized, is a mixture between the normal and Mittag-Leffler distributions, which we call by Normal-Mittag-Leffler (NML) law. A parameter estimation procedure for the NML distribution is developed and the associated asymptotic distribution is derived. Simulations are performed to c…
