We consider the behavior of spatial point processes when subjected to a class of linear transformations indexed by a variable T. It was shown in Ellis [Adv. in Appl. Probab. 18 (1986) 646-659] that, under mild assumptions, the transformed processes behave approximately like Poisson processes for large T. In this article, under very similar assumptions, explicit upper bounds are given for the d_2-distance between the corresponding point process distributions. A number of related results, and applications to kernel density estimation and long range dependence testing are also presented. The main results are proved by applying a generalized Stein-Chen method to discretized versions of the point processes.
We give an exposition and numerical studies of upper hedging prices in multinomial models from the viewpoint of linear programming and the game-theoretic probability of Shafer and Vovk. We also show that, as the number of rounds goes to infinity, the upper hedging price of a European option converges to the solution of the Black-Scholes-Barenblatt equation.
We show that the solutions to the damped stochastic wave equation converge pathwise to the solution of a stochastic heat equation. This is called the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation. Cerrai and Freidlin have previously demonstrated that this result holds in the cases where the system is exposed to additive noise in any spatial dimension or when the system is exposed to multiplicative noise and the spatial dimension is one. The current paper proves that the Smoluchowski-Kramers approximation is valid in any spatial dimension when the system is exposed to multiplicative noise.
Optimal upper and lower error estimates for strong full-discrete numerical approximations of the stochastic heat equation driven by space-time white noise are obtained. In particular, we establish the optimality of strong convergence rates for full-discrete approximations of stochastic Allen-Cahn equations with space-time white noise which have recently been obtained in [Becker, S., Gess, B., Jentzen, A., and Kloeden, P. E., Strong convergence rates for explicit space-time discrete numerical approximations of stochastic Allen-Cahn equations. arXiv:1711.02423 (2017)].
Motivated by the simulation of stable random fields, we consider the issue of discrete approximations of independently scattered stable noise. Two approaches are proposed: grid approximations available when the underlying space is $\bbR^d$ and shot noise approximations available on more general spaces. Limit theorems stating the convergence of discrete random noises to stable white noise are proved. These results are then applied to study moving average spatial random fields with heavy-tailed innovations and related limit theorems. A second application deals with discrete approximation for Bro…
Motivated by an approximation problem from mathematical finance, we analyse the stability of the boundary crossing probability for the multivariate Brownian motion process, with respect to small changes of the boundary. Under broad assumptions on the nature of the boundary, including the Lipschitz condition (in a Hausdorff-type metric) on its time cross-sections, we obtain an analogue of the Borovkov and Novikov (2005) upper bound for the difference between boundary hitting probabilities for "close boundaries" in the univariate case. We also obtained upper bounds for the first boundary crossin…
The present article investigates the convergence of a class of space-time discretization schemes for the Cauchy problem for linear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) defined on the whole space. Sufficient conditions are given for accelerating the convergence of the scheme with respect to the spatial approximation to higher order accuracy by an application of Richardson's method. This work extends the results of Gyöngy and Krylov [SIAM J. Math. Anal., 42 (2010), pp. 2275--2296] to schemes that discretize in time as well as space.
We establish upper bounds for the $L^p$-quantization error, p in (1, 2+d), induced by the recursive Markovian quantization of a d-dimensional diffusion discretized via the Euler scheme. We introduce a hybrid recursive quantization scheme, easier to implement in the high-dimensional framework, and establish upper bounds to the corresponding $L^p$-quantization error. To take advantage of these extensions, we propose a time discretization scheme and a recursive quantization-based discretization scheme associated to a reflected Backward Stochastic Differential Equation and estimate $L^p$-error bou…
The aim of this paper is two-fold. First we analyze the sequence of intensity measures of a spatial branching point process arising in a multiple target tracking context. We study its stability properties, characterize its long time behavior and provide a series of weak Lipschitz type functional contraction inequalities. Second we design and analyze an original particle scheme to approximate numerically these intensity measures. Under appropriate regularity conditions, we obtain uniform and non asymptotic estimates and a functional central limit theorem. To the best of our knowledge, these are…
We establish the discrete approximation to Brownian motion with varying dimension (BMVD in abbreviation) by random walks. The setting is very similar to that in [11], but here we use a different method allowing us to get rid the restrictions in [11] (or [3]) that the underlying state space has to be bounded, and that the initial distribution of the limiting continuous process has to be its invariant distribution. The approach in this paper is that we first obtain heat kernel upper bounds for the approximating random walks that are uniform in their mesh size, by establishing a Nash-type inequal…
Classical approximation results for stochastic differential equations analyze the $L^p$-distance between the exact solution and its Euler-Maruyama approximations. In this article we measure the error with temporal-spatial Hölder-norms. Our motivation for this are multigrid approximations of the exact solution viewed as a function of the starting point. We establish the classical strong convergence rate $0.5$ with respect to temporal-spatial Hölder-norms if the coefficient functions have bounded derivatives of first and second order.
The article starts with generalizations of some classical results and new truncation error upper bounds in the sampling theorem for bandlimited stochastic processes. Then, it investigates $L_p([0,T])$ and uniform approximations of $φ$-sub-Gaussian random processes by finite time sampling sums. Explicit truncation error upper bounds are established. Some specifications of the general results for which the assumptions can be easily verified are given. Direct analytical methods are employed to obtain the results.
The strong $L^2$-approximation of occupation time functionals is studied with respect to discrete observations of a $d$-dimensional càdlàg process. Upper bounds on the error are obtained under weak assumptions, generalizing previous results in the literature considerably. The approach relies on regularity for the marginals of the process and applies also to non-Markovian processes, such as fractional Brownian motion. The results are used to approximate occupation times and local times. For Brownian motion, the upper bounds are shown to be sharp up to a log-factor.
In this paper we deal with pointwise approximation of solutions of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by infinite dimensional Wiener process with additional jumps generated by Poisson random measure. The further investigations contain upper error bounds for the proposed truncated dimension randomized Euler scheme. We also establish matching (up to constants) upper and lower bounds for $\varepsilon$-complexity and show that the defined algorithm is optimal in the Information-Based Complexity (IBC) sense. Finally, results of numerical experiments performed by using GPU architecture …
The article starts with new aliasing-truncation error upper bounds in the sampling theorem for non-bandlimited stochastic signals. Then, it investigates $L_p([0,T])$ approximations of sub-Gaussian random signals. Explicit truncation error upper bounds are established. The obtained rate of convergence provides a constructive algorithm for determining the sampling rate and the sample size in the truncated Whittaker-Kotel'nikov-Shannon expansions to ensure the approximation of sub-Gaussian signals with given accuracy and reliability. Some numerical examples are presented.
In the context of stationary $\mathbb{Z}^d$ nearest-neighbour Gibbs measures $μ$ satisfying strong spatial mixing, we present a new combinatorial condition (the topological strong spatial mixing property (TSSM)) on the support of $μ$ sufficient for having an efficient approximation algorithm for topological pressure. We establish many useful properties of TSSM for studying strong spatial mixing on systems with hard constraints. We also show that TSSM is, in fact, necessary for strong spatial mixing to hold at high rate. Part of this work is an extension of results obtained by D. Gamarnik and D…
Consider the Allen-Cahn equation on the $d$-dimensional torus, $d=2,3$, in the sharp interface limit. As it is well known, the limiting dynamics is described by the motion by mean curvature of the interface between the two stable phases. Here, we analyze a stochastic perturbation of the Allen-Cahn equation and describe its large deviation asymptotics in a joint sharp interface and small noise limit. Relying on previous results on the variational convergence of the action functional, we prove the large deviation upper bound. The corresponding rate function is finite only when there exists a tim…
This paper introduces SPDE bridges with observation noise and contains an analysis of their spatially semidiscrete approximations. The SPDEs are considered in the form of mild solutions in an abstract Hilbert space framework suitable for parabolic equations. They are assumed to be linear with additive noise in the form of a cylindrical Wiener process. The observational noise is also cylindrical and SPDE bridges are formulated via conditional distributions of Gaussian random variables in Hilbert spaces. A general framework for the spatial discretization of these bridge processes is introduced. …
