Physical notions of stochastic resonance for potential diffusions in periodically changing double-well potentials such as the spectral power amplification have proved to be defective. They are not robust for the passage to their effective dynamics: continuous-time finite-state Markov chains describing the rough features of transitions between different domains of attraction of metastable points. In the framework of one-dimensional diffusions moving in periodically changing double-well potentials we design a new notion of stochastic resonance which refines Freidlin's concept of quasi-periodic motion. It is based on exact exponential rates for the transition probabilities between the domains of attraction which are robust with respect to the reduced Markov chains. The quality of periodic tuning is measured by the probability for transition during fixed time windows depending on a time scale parameter. Maximizing it in this parameter produces the stochastic resonance points.
We investigate the tail distribution of the first exit time of Brownian motion with drift from a cone and find its exact asymptotics for a large class of cones. Our results show in particular that its exponential decreasing rate is a function of the distance between the drift and the cone, whereas the polynomial part in the asymptotics depends on the position of the drift with respect to the cone and its polar cone, and reflects the local geometry of the cone at the point where the drift is orthogonally projected.
We study a class of reflected McKean-Vlasov diffusions over a convex domain with self-stabilizing coefficients. This includes coefficients that do not satisfy the classical Wasserstein Lipschitz condition. Further, the process is constrained to a (not necessarily bounded) convex domain by a local time on the boundary. These equations include the subclass of reflected self-stabilizing diffusions that drift towards their mean via a convolution of the solution law with a stabilizing potential. Firstly, we establish existence and uniqueness results for this class and address the propagation of cha…
We provide a new methodology to simulate the first exit times of a vector of Brownian motions from an orthant. This new approach can be used to simulate the first exit times of dimension higher than two. When at least one Brownian motion has non-zero drift, the joint density function of the first exit times in N dimensions needs to be known, or approximated. However, when the drifts are all zero, a simpler simulation algorithm is obtained without using the joint density function.
By appealing to renewal theory we determine the equations that the mean exit time of a continuous-time random walk with drift satisfies both when the present coincides with a jump instant or when it does not. Particular attention is paid to the corrections ensuing from the non-Markovian nature of the process. We show that when drift and jumps have the same sign the relevant integral equations can be solved in closed form. The case when holding times have the classical Erlang distribution is considered in detail.
In this paper, we derive a parabolic partial differential equation for the expected exit time of non-autonomous time-periodic non-degenerate stochastic differential equations. This establishes a Feynman-Kac duality between expected exit time of time-periodic stochastic differential equations and time-periodic solutions of parabolic partial differential equations. Casting the time-periodic solution of the parabolic partial differential equation as a fixed point problem and a convex optimisationproblem, we give sufficient conditions in which the partial differential equation is well-posed in a w…
We study quantitative asymptotics of planar random walks that are spatially non-homogeneous but whose mean drifts have some regularity. Specifically, we study the first exit time $τ_α$ from a wedge with apex at the origin and interior half-angle $α$ by a non-homogeneous random walk on the square lattice with mean drift at $x$ of magnitude $O(1/|x|)$ as $|x| \to \infty$. This is the critical regime for the asymptotic behaviour: under mild conditions, a previous result of the authors (see arXiv:0910.1772) stated that $τ_α< \infty$ a.s. for any $α$ (while for a stronger drift field $τ_α$ is infin…
We compute the exponential decay of the probability that a given multi-dimensional random walk stays in a convex cone up to time $n$, as $n$ goes to infinity. We show that the latter equals the minimum, on the dual cone, of the Laplace transform of the random walk increments. As an example, our results find applications in the counting of walks in orthants, a classical domain in enumerative combinatorics.
We consider the exit problem for a one-dimensional system with random switching near an unstable equilibrium point of the averaged drift. In the infinite switching rate limit, we show that the exit time satisfies a limit theorem with a logarithmic deterministic term and a random correction converging in distribution. Thus this setting is in the universality class of the unstable equilibrium exit under small white-noise perturbations.
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb R^n$ be a bounded domain and for $x\inΩ$ let $τ(x)$ be the expected exit time from $Ω$ of a diffusing particle starting at $x$ and advected by an incompressible flow $u$. We are interested in the question which flows maximize $\|τ\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$, that is, they are most efficient in the creation of hotspots inside $Ω$. Surprisingly, among all simply connected domains in two dimensions, the discs are the only ones for which the zero flow $u\equiv 0$ maximises $\|τ\|_{L^\infty(Ω)}$. We also show that in any dimension, among all domains with a fixed volume and all incompress…
This paper addresses heavy-tailed large deviation estimates for the distribution tail of functionals of a class of spectrally one-sided Lévy process. Our contribution is to show that these estimates remain valid in a near-critical regime. This complements recent similar results that have been obtained for the all-time supremum of such processes. Specifically, we consider local asymptotics of the all-time supremum, the supremum of the process until exiting $[0,\infty)$, the maximum jump until that time, and the time it takes until exiting $[0,\infty)$. The proofs rely, among other things, on pr…
We investigate exit times from domains of attraction for the motion of a self-stabilized particle traveling in a geometric (potential type) landscape and perturbed by Brownian noise of small amplitude. Self-stabilization is the effect of including an ensemble-average attraction in addition to the usual state-dependent drift, where the particle is supposed to be suspended in a large population of identical ones. A Kramers' type law for the particle's exit from the potential's domains of attraction and a large deviations principle for the self-stabilizing diffusion are proved. It turns out that …
The first-exit time process of an inverse Gaussian Lévy process is considered. The one-dimensional distribution functions of the process are obtained. They are not infinitely divisible and the tail probabilities decay exponentially. These distribution functions can also be viewed as distribution functions of supremum of the Brownian motion with drift. The density function is shown to solve a fractional PDE and the result is also generalized to tempered stable subordinators. The subordination of this process to the Brownian motion is considered and the underlying PDE of the subordinated process…
In Gambler's Ruin when both players start with the same amount of money, we show the playing time stochastically increases when the games are made more fair. We give two different arguments for this fact that extend results from \cite{Pek2021}. We then use this to show that the exit time from a symmetric interval for Brownian motion with drift stochastically increases as the drift moves closer to zero; this result is not easily obtainable from available explicit formulas for the density.
We provide sharp Large Deviation estimates for the probability of exit from a domain for the bridge of a $d$-dimensional general diffusion process $X$, as the conditioning time tends to $0$. This kind of results is motivated by applications to numerical simulation. In particular we investigate the influence of the drift $b$ of $X$. It turns out that the sharp asymptotics for the exit time probability are independent of the drift, provided $b$ enjoyes a simple condition that is always satisfied in dimension $1$. On the other hand, we show that the drift can be influential if this assumption is …
In this paper, an approximate version of the Barndorff-Nielsen and Shephard model, driven by a Brownian motion and a Lévy subordinator, is formulated. The first-exit time of the log-return process for this model is analyzed. It is shown that with certain probability, the first-exit time process of the log-return is decomposable into the sum of the first exit time of the Brownian motion with drift, and the first exit time of a Lévy subordinator with drift. Subsequently, the probability density functions of the first exit time of some specific Lévy subordinators, connected to stationary, self-de…
In this paper we consider a diffusion process obtained as a small random perturbation of a dynamical system attracted to a stable equilibrium point. The drift and the diffusive perturbation are assumed to evolve slowly in time. We describe the asymptotics of the time it takes the process to exit a given domain and the limiting distribution of the exit point.
A careful look at rough path topology applied to Brownian motion reveals new possible properties of the well-known Lévy area, in particular the presence of an intrinsic drift of this area. Using renormalization limit of Markov chains on periodic graphs, we present a construction of such a non-trivial drift and give an explicit formula for it. Several examples for which explicit computations are made are included.
This paper is concerned with the behaviour of a Lévy process when it crosses over a positive level, $u$, starting from 0, both as $u$ becomes large and as $u$ becomes small. Our main focus is on the time, $τ_u$, it takes the process to transit above the level, and in particular, on the {\it stability} of this passage time; thus, essentially, whether or not $τ_u$ behaves linearly as $u\dto 0$ or $u\to\infty$. We also consider conditional stability of $τ_u$ when the process drifts to $-\infty$, a.s. This provides information relevant to quantities associated with the ruin of an insurance risk pr…
Let $X = (X_1, X_2)$ be a 2-dimensional random variable and $X(n), n \in \mathbb{N}$ a sequence of i.i.d. copies of $X$. The associated random walk is $S(n)= X(1) + \cdots +X(n)$. The corresponding absorbed-reflected walk $W(n), n \in \mathbb{N}$ in the first quadrant is given by $W(0) = x \in \mathbb{R}_+^2$ and $W(n) = \max \{ 0, W(n-1) - X(n) \}$, where the maximum is taken coordinate-wise. This is often called the Lindley process and models the waiting times in a two-server queue. We characterize recurrence of this process, assuming suitable, rather mild moment conditions on $X$. It turns …
In this paper we study the existence and uniqueness of the random periodic solution for a stochastic differential equation with a one-sided Lipschitz condition (also known as monotonicity condition) and the convergence of its numerical approximation via the backward Euler-Maruyama method. The existence of the random periodic solution is shown as the limits of the pull-back flows of the SDE and discretized SDE respectively. We establish a convergence rate of the strong error for the backward Euler-Maruyama method and obtain the weak convergence result for the approximation of the periodic measu…
We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients when the drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Our criteria rely on control systems and the support theorem, existence of an attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension and of some Lyapunov function. Positive Harris recurrence enables us to prove limit theorems for such diffusions. As an application, we consider a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model for a s…
We study the first exit time $τ$ from an arbitrary cone with apex at the origin by a non-homogeneous random walk (Markov chain) on $\Z^d$ ($d \geq 2$) with mean drift that is asymptotically zero. Specifically, if the mean drift at $\bx \in \Z^d$ is of magnitude $O(\| \bx\|^{-1})$, we show that $τ<\infty$ a.s. for any cone. On the other hand, for an appropriate drift field with mean drifts of magnitude $\| \bx\|^{-β}$, $β\in (0,1)$, we prove that our random walk has a limiting (random) direction and so eventually remains in an arbitrarily narrow cone. The conditions imposed on the random walk a…
We consider processes that coincide with a given diffusion process outside a finite collection of domains. In each of the domains, there is, additionally, a large drift directed towards the interior of the domain. We describe the limiting behavior of the processes as the magnitude of the drift tends to infinity, and thus the domains become trapping, with the time to exit the domains being exponentially large. In particular, in exponential time scales, metastable distributions between the trapping regions are considered.
Stochastic homogenization is achieved for a class of elliptic and parabolic equations describing the lifetime, in large domains, of stationary diffusion processes in random environment which are small, statistically isotropic perturbations of Brownian motion in dimension at least three. Furthermore, the homogenization is shown to occur with an algebraic rate. Such processes were first considered in the continuous setting by Sznitman and Zeitouni [21], upon whose results the present work relies strongly, and more recently their smoothed exit distributions from large domains were shown to conver…
Dynamical system models with delayed dynamics and small noise arise in a variety of applications in science and engineering. In many applications, stable equilibrium or periodic behavior is critical to a well functioning system. Sufficient conditions for the stability of equilibrium points or periodic orbits of certain deterministic dynamical systems with delayed dynamics are known and it is of interest to understand the sample path behavior of such systems under the addition of small noise. We consider a small noise stochastic delay differential equation (SDDE) with coefficients that depend o…
We are dealing with the Navier-Stokes equation in a bounded regular domain $D$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$, perturbed by an additive Gaussian noise $\partial w^{Q_δ}/\partial t$, which is white in time and colored in space. We assume that the correlation radius of the noise gets smaller and smaller as $δ\searrow 0$, so that the noise converges to the white noise in space and time. For every $δ>0$ we introduce the large deviation action functional $S^δ_{0,T}$ and the corresponding quasi-potential $U_δ$ and, by using arguments from relaxation and $Γ$-convergence we show that $U_δ$ converges to $U=U_0$, in…
In this paper, we study the asymptotic of exit problem for controlled Markov diffusion processes with random jumps and vanishing diffusion terms, where the random jumps are introduced in order to modify the evolution of the controlled diffusions by switching from one mode of dynamics to another. That is, depending on the state-position and state-transition information, the dynamics of the controlled diffusions randomly switches between the different drift and diffusion terms. Here, we specifically investigate the asymptotic exit problem concerning such controlled Markov diffusion processes in …
In his seminal work from the 1950s, William Feller classified all one-dimensional diffusions on $-\infty\leq a<b\leq \infty$ in terms of their ability to access the boundary (Feller's test for explosions) and to enter the interior from the boundary. Feller's technique is restricted to diffusion processes as the corresponding differential generators allow explicit computations and the use of Hille-Yosida theory. In the present article we study exit and entrance from infinity for the most natural generalization, that is, jump diffusions of the form \[ dZ_t=σ(Z_{t-})\,dX_t, \] driven by stable Lé…
We consider the asymptotic behaviour of the solution of one dimensional stochastic differential equations and Langevin equations in periodic backgrounds with zero average. We prove that in several such models, there is generically a non vanishing asymptotic velocity, despite of the fact that the average of the background is zero.
We derive asymptotic formulas for the mean exit time $\barτ^{N}$ of the fastest among $N$ identical independently distributed Brownian particles to an absorbing boundary for various initial distributions (partially uniformly and exponentially distributed). Depending on the tail of the initial distribution, we report here a continuous algebraic decay law for $\barτ^{N}$, which differs from the classical Weibull or Gumbell results. We derive asymptotic formulas in dimension 1 and 2, for half-line and an interval that we compare with stochastic simulations. We also obtain formulas for an additive…
The zero-noise limit of differential equations with singular coefficients is investigated for the first time in the case when the noise is an $α$-stable process. It is proved that extremal solutions are selected and the respective probability of selection is computed. For this purpose an exit time problem from the half-line, which is of interest in its own right, is formulated and studied by means of a suitable decomposition in small and large jumps adapted to the singular drift.
We consider certain one dimensional ordinary stochastic differential equations driven by additive Brownian motion of variance $\varepsilon ^2$. When $\varepsilon =0$ such equations have an unstable non-hyperbolic fixed point and the drift near such a point has a power law behavior. For $\varepsilon >0$ small, the fixed point property disappears, but it is replaced by a random escape or transit time which diverges as $\varepsilon \searrow0$. We show that this random time, under suitable (easily guessed) rescaling, converges to a limit random variable that essentially depends only on the power e…
We consider potential type dynamical systems in finite dimensions with two meta-stable states. They are subject to two sources of perturbation: a slow external periodic perturbation of period $T$ and a small Gaussian random perturbation of intensity $ε$, and, therefore, are mathematically described as weakly time inhomogeneous diffusion processes. A system is in stochastic resonance, provided the small noisy perturbation is tuned in such a way that its random trajectories follow the exterior periodic motion in an optimal fashion, that is, for some optimal intensity $ε(T)$. The physicists' favo…

We study in this paper the longtime behavior of some large but finite populations of interacting stochastic differential equations whose (infinite population) limit Fokker-Planck PDE admits a stable periodic solution. We show that the empirical measure for the population of size $N$ stays close to the periodic solution, but with a random dephasing at the timescale $Nt$ that converges weakly to a Brownian motion with constant drift.
In this paper we consider a stochastic process that may experience random reset events which bring suddenly the system to the starting value and analyze the relevant statistical magnitudes. We focus our attention on monotonous continuous-time random walks with a constant drift: the process increases between the reset events, either by the effect of the random jumps, or by the action of the deterministic drift. As a result of all these combined factors interesting properties emerge, like the existence|for any drift strength|of a stationary transition probability density function, or the faculty…
We consider a diffusion $(ξ_t)_{t\ge 0}$ whose drift contains some deterministic periodic signal. Its shape being fixed and known, up to scaling in time, the periodicity of the signal is the unknown parameter $\vartheta$ of interest. We consider sequences of local models at $\vartheta$, corresponding to continuous observation of the process $ξ$ on the time interval $[0,n]$ as $n\to\infty$, with suitable choice of local scale at $\vartheta$. Our tools --under an ergodicity condition-- are path segments of $ξ$ corresponding to the period $\vartheta$, and limit theorems for certain functionals of…
The purpose of this short note is to give a variation on the classical Donsker-Varadhan inequality, which bounds the first eigenvalue of a second-order elliptic operator on a bounded domain $Ω$ by the largest mean first exit time of the associated drift-diffusion process via $$λ_1 \geq \frac{1}{\sup_{x \in Ω} \mathbb{E}_x τ_{Ω^c}}.$$ Instead of looking at the mean of the first exit time, we study quantiles: let $d_{p, \partial Ω}:Ω\rightarrow \mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$ be the smallest time $t$ such that the likelihood of exiting within that time is $p$, then $$λ_1 \geq \frac{\log{(1/p)}}{\sup_{x \in…
We show that one-dimensional random walks in a quasi-periodic environment with Liouville frequency generically have an erratic statistical behavior. In the recurrent case we show that neither quenched nor annealed limit theorems hold and both drift and variance exhibit wild oscillations, being logarithmic at some times and almost linear at other times. In the transient case we show that the annealed Central Limit Theorem fails generically. These results are in stark contrast with the Diophantine case where the Central Limit Theorem with linear drift and variance was established by Sinai.
We solve two stochastic control problems in which a player tries to minimize or maximize the exit time from an interval of a Brownian particle, by controlling its drift. The player can change from one drift to another but is subject to a switching cost. In each problem, the value function is written as the solution of a free boundary problem involving second order ordinary differential equations, in which the unknown boundaries are found by applying the principle of smooth fit. For both problems, we compute the value function, we exhibit the optimal strategy and we prove its generic uniqueness…
We consider the problem of stochastic exit from a planar domain, whose boundary is an unstable periodic orbit, and which contains a stable periodic orbit. This problem arises when investigating the distribution of noise-induced phase slips between synchronized oscillators, or when studying stochastic resonance far from the adiabatic limit. We introduce a simple, piecewise linear model equation, for which the distribution of first-passage times can be precisely computed. In particular, we obtain a quantitative description of the phenomenon of cycling: The distribution of first-passage times rot…
It is a challenging issue to analyze complex dynamics from observed and simulated data. An advantage of extracting dynamic behaviors from data is that this approach enables the investigation of nonlinear phenomena whose mathematical models are unavailable. The purpose of this present work is to extract information about transition phenomena (e.g., mean exit time and escape probability), from data of stochastic differential equations with non-Gaussian Lévy noise. As a tool in describing dynamical systems, the Koopman semigroup transforms a nonlinear system into a linear system, but at the cost …
