Based on the duality between open-string theory on noncompact Calabi-Yau threefolds and Chern-Simons theory on three manifolds, M Marino and C Vafa conjectured a formula of one-partition Hodge integrals in term of invariants of the unknot (hep-th/0108064). Many Hodge integral identities, including the lambda_g conjecture and the ELSV formula, can be obtained by taking limits of the Marino-Vafa formula.
Motivated by the Marino-Vafa formula and formula of Gromov-Witten invariants of local toric Calabi-Yau threefolds predicted by physicists, J Zhou conjectured a formula of two-partition Hodge integrals in terms of invariants of the Hopf link (math.AG/0310282) and used it to justify physicists' predictions (math.AG/0310283).
In this expository article, we describe proofs and applications of these two formulae of Hodge integrals based on joint works of K Liu, J Zhou and the author (math.AG/0306257, math.AG/0306434, math.AG/0308015, math.AG/0310272).
This is an expansion of the author's talk of the same title at the BIRS workshop: "The Interaction of Finite Type and Gromov-Witten Invariants", November 15--20, 2003.
In this note we survey Hodge-theoretic formulae of Atiyah-Meyer type for genera and characteristic classes of complex algebraic varieties, and derive some new and interesting applications. We also present various extensions to the singular setting of the Chern-Hirzebruch-Serre signature formula.
Generalized Kontsevich Matrix Model (GKMM) with a certain given potential is the partition function of $r$-spin intersection numbers. We represent this GKMM in terms of fermions and expand it in terms of the Schur polynomials by boson-fermion correspondence, and link it with a Hurwitz partition function and a Hodge partition by operators in a $\widehat{GL}(\infty)$ group. Then, from a $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint of the partition function of $r$-spin intersection numbers, we get a $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint for the Hodge partition function. The $W_{1+\infty}$ constraint completely determines the S…
We prove two explicit formulae for one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed 3-cycles. We define "combinatorial Hodge integrals" from these numbers in the spirit of the celebrated ELSV formula. The obtained results imply some explicit formulae and properties of the combinatorial Hodge integrals.
A conjectural relationship between the GUE partition function with even couplings and certain special cubic Hodge integrals over the moduli spaces of stable algebraic curves is under consideration.
We establish an explicit relationship between the partition function of certain special cubic Hodge integrals and the generalized Brezin--Gross--Witten (BGW) partition function, which we refer to as the Hodge-BGW correspondence. As an application, we obtain an ELSV-like formula for generalized BGW correlators.
A conjecture on the relation between the cubic Hodge integrals and the topological vertex in topological string theory is resolved. A central role is played by the notion of generalized shift symmetries in a fermionic realization of the two-dimensional quantum torus algebra. These algebraic relations of operators in the fermionic Fock space are used to convert generating functions of the cubic Hodge integrals and the topological vertex to each other. As a byproduct, the generating function of the cubic Hodge integrals at special values of the parameters therein is shown to be a tau function of…
We conjecture an evaluation of three-partition cyclic Hodge integrals in terms of loop Schur functions. Our formula implies the orbifold Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for toric Calabi-Yau threefolds with transverse type A singularities. We prove the formula in the case where one of the partitions is empty, and thus establish the orbifold Gromov- Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local toric surfaces with transverse type A singularities.
Let X be a nonsingular complex projective variety that is acted on by a reductive group $G$ and such that $X^{ss} \neq X_{(0)}^{s}\neq \emptyset$. We give formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré series of the quotient $X_{(0)}^s/G$. We use these computations to obtain the corresponding formulae for the Hodge--Poincaré polynomial of the moduli space of properly stable vector bundles when the rank and the degree are not coprime. We compute explicitly the case in which the rank equals 2 and the degree is even.
We prove a closed formula for integrals of the cotangent line classes against the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of stable pointed curves. These integrals are computed via relations obtained from virtual localization in Gromov-Witten theory. An analysis of several natural matrices indexed by partitions is required.
We prove a formula conjectured by the third author expressing certain Hodge integrals in terms of certain Chern-Simons link invariants. Such invariants also arise in the representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras.
The aim of this paper is to study the behavior of Hodge-theoretic (intersection homology) genera and their associated characteristic classes under proper morphisms of complex algebraic varieties. We obtain formulae that relate (parametrized families of) global invariants of a complex algebraic variety $X$ to such invariants of singularities of proper algebraic maps defined on $X$. Such formulae severely constrain, both topologically and analytically, the singularities of complex maps, even between smooth varieties. Similar results were announced by the first and third author in \cite{CS1, S}.
We prove the conjectural relationship recently proposed in [9] between certain special cubic Hodge integrals of the Gopakumar--Mariño--Vafa type [17, 28] and GUE correlators, and the conjecture proposed in [7] that the partition function of these Hodge integrals is a tau function of the discrete KdV hierarchy.
This is the second part of two papers. In this part, we establish closed formulae for the universal functions in the blowup formulae for virtual Hodge polynomials of Gieseker moduli spaces of rank-2 stable sheaves and Uhlenbeck compactification spaces over algebraic surfaces.
We celebrate the 100th anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan's election as a Fellow of the Royal Society, which was largely based on his work with G. H. Hardy on the asymptotic properties of the partition function. After recalling this revolutionary work, marking the birth of the "circle method", we present a contemporary example of its legacy in topology. We deduce the equidistribution of Hodge numbers for Hilbert schemes of suitable smooth projective surfaces.
This is the first part of two papers. In this part, we prove the blowup formulae for virtual Hodge polynomials of Gieseker moduli spaces of rank-2 stable sheaves and Uhlenbeck compactification spaces over algebraic surfaces. In particular, we verify the blowup formulae for the S-duality conjecture of Vafa-Witten, i.e. the blowup formulae for the Euler numbers of instanton moduli spaces over algebraic surfaces.
The exponential of the triangular matrix whose entries in the diagonal at distance $n$ from the principal diagonal are all equal to the sum of the inverse of the divisors of $n$ is the triangular matrix whose entries in the diagonal at distance $n$ from the principal diagonal are all equal to the number of partitions of $n$. A similar result is true for any pair of sequences satisfying a special recurrence.
We show that the generating series of some Hodge integrals involving one or two partitions are tau-functions of the KP hierarchy or the 2-Toda hierarchy respectively. We also formulate a conjecture on the connection between relative invariants and integrable hierarchies. The conjecture is verified in some examples.
We compute the Nekrasov partition function of gauge theories on the (resolved) toric singularities C^2/Γin terms of blow-up formulae. We discuss the expansion of the partition function in the ε_1,ε_2 \to 0 limit along with its modular properties and how to derive them from the M-theory perspective. On the two-dimensional conformal field theory side, our results can be interpreted in terms of representations of the direct sum of Heisenberg plus W_N-algebrae with suitable central charges, which can be computed from the fan of the resolved toric variety. We provide a check of this correspondence b…
For three-partition triple Hodge integrals related to the topological vertex, we derive Eynard-Orantin type recursion relations from the cut-and-join equation. This establishes a version of local mirror symmetry for the local $C^3$ geometry with three D-branes, as proposed by Marino and Bouchard-Klemm-Marino-Pasquetti.
We prove very general formulae for the generating series of (Hodge) genera of symmetric products with coefficients, which hold for complex quasi-projective varieties with any kind of singularities, and which include many of the classical results in the literature as special cases. Important specializations of our results include generating series for extensions of Hodge numbers and Hirzebruch genus to the singular setting and, in particular, generating series for Intersection cohomology Hodge numbers and Goresky-MacPherson Intersection cohomology signatures of symmetric products of complex pro…
We study the behavior of Hodge-theoretic genera under morphisms of complex algebraic varieties. We prove that the additive $χ_y$-genus which arises in the motivic context satisfies the so-called ``stratified multiplicative property", which shows how to compute the invariant of the source of a proper surjective morphism from its values on various varieties that arise from the singularities of the map. By considering morphisms to a curve, we obtain a Hodge-theoretic analogue of the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. We also study the contribution of monodromy to the $χ_y$-genus of a smooth projective fami…
A formula for the exact partition function of 1/4 BPS dyons in a class of CHL models has been proposed earlier. The formula involves inverse of Siegel modular forms of subgroups of Sp(2,Z). In this paper we propose product formulae for these modular forms. This generalizes the result of Borcherds and Gritsenko and Nikulin for the weight 10 cusp form of the full Sp(2,Z) group.
