It is common practice in both theoretical computer science and theoretical physics to describe the (static) logic of a system by means of a complete lattice. When formalizing the dynamics of such a system, the updates of that system organize themselves quite naturally in a quantale, or more generally, a quantaloid. In fact, we are lead to consider cocomplete quantaloid-enriched categories as fundamental mathematical structure for a dynamic logic common to both computer science and physics. Here we explain the theory of totally continuous cocomplete categories as generalization of the well-known theory of totally continuous suplattices. That is to say, we undertake some first steps towards a theory of "dynamic domains''.
Our subject is that of categories, functors and distributors enriched in a base quantaloid Q. We show how cocomplete Q-categories are precisely those which are tensored and conically cocomplete, or alternatively, those which are tensored, cotensored and order-cocomplete. Bearing this in mind, we analyze how Sup-valued homomorphisms on Q are related to Q-categories. With an appendix on action, representation and variation.
The purpose of this article is to study the existence of Deligne's tensor product of abelian categories by comparing it with the well-known ten- sor product of finitely cocomplete categories. The main result states that the former exists precisely when the latter is an abelian category, and moreover in this case both tensor products coincide. An example of two abelian categories whose Deligne tensor product does not exist is given.
We prove that the homotopy theory of cofibration categories is equivalent to the homotopy theory of cocomplete quasicategories. This is achieved by presenting both homotopy theories as fibration categories and constructing an explicit equivalence between them.
The category of internal coalgebras in a cocomplete category $\mathcal{C}$ with respect to a variety $\mathcal{V}$ is equivalent to the category of left adjoint functors from $\mathcal{V}$ into $\mathcal{C}$. This can be seen best when considering such coalgebras as finite coproduct preserving functors from $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$, the dual of the Lawvere theory of $\mathcal{V}$, into $\mathcal{C}$: coalgebras are restrictions of left adjoints and any such left adjoint is the left Kan extension of a coalgebra along the embedding of $\mathcal{T}_\mathcal{V}^\mathsf{op}$ into $\mat…
We prove existence of equalizers in certain categories of cocomplete cocategories. This allows us to complete the proof of the fact that A-infinity functor categories arise as internal Hom-objects in the category of differential graded cocomplete augmented cocategories.
We describe a duality for quantale-enriched categories that extends the Lawson duality for continuous dcpos: for any saturated class J of modules that commute with certain weighted limits, and under an appropriate choice of morphisms, the category of J-cocomplete and J-continuous quantale-enriched categories is self-dual.
We prove that the tensor category of quasi-coherent modules $\mathsf{Qcoh}(X \times_S Y)$ on a fiber product of quasi-compact quasi-separated schemes is the bicategorical pushout of $\mathsf{Qcoh}(X)$ and $\mathsf{Qcoh}(Y)$ over $\mathsf{Qcoh}(S)$ in the $2$-category of cocomplete linear tensor categories. In particular, $\mathsf{Qcoh}(X \times Y)$ is the bicategorical coproduct of $\mathsf{Qcoh}(X)$ and $\mathsf{Qcoh}(Y)$. For this we introduce idals, which can be seen as non-embedded ideals, and use them to study localizations of cocomplete tensor categories in general.
In this communication, motivated by a classical result that relates cocomplete quantale-enriched categories to modules over a quantale, we prove a similar result for quantale-enriched multicategories.
Semi-abelian and finitely cocomplete homological categories are characterized in terms of four resp. three simple axioms, in terms of the basic categorical notions introduced in the first few chapters of MacLane's classical book. As an immediate application we show that categories of diagrams in semi-abelian and similar categories are of the same type; in particular, the category of simplicial or Γ-objects in a semi-abelian category is semi-abelian.
In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.
This paper deals with questions relating to Haghverdi and Scott's notion of partially traced categories. The main result is a representation theorem for such categories: we prove that every partially traced category can be faithfully embedded in a totally traced category. Also conversely, every symmetric monoidal subcategory of a totally traced category is partially traced, so this characterizes the partially traced categories completely. The main technique we use is based on Freyd's paracategories, along with a partial version of Joyal, Street, and Verity's Int-construction.
Our work is a fundamental study of the notion of approximation in V-categories and in (U,V)-categories, for a quantale V and the ultrafilter monad U. We introduce auxiliary, approximating and Scott-continuous distributors, the way-below distributor, and continuity of V- and (U,V)-categories. We fully characterize continuous V-categories (resp. (U,V)-categories) among all cocomplete V-categories (resp. (U,V)-categories) in the same ways as continuous domains are characterized among all dcpos. By varying the choice of the quantale V and the notion of ideals, and by further allowing the ultrafilt…
We prove that for a large class of well-behaved cocomplete categories $\mathcal C$ the weak and strong Drinfeld centers of the monoidal category $\mathcal{E}$ of cocontinuous endofunctors of $\mathcal{C}$ coincide. This generalizes similar results in the literature, where $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of modules over a ring $A$ and hence $\mathcal{E}$ is the category of $A$-bimodules.
We introduce a notion of total acyclicity associated to a subcategory of an abelian category and consider the Gorenstein objects they define. These Gorenstein objects form a Frobenius category, whose induced stable category is equivalent to the homotopy category of totally acyclic complexes. Applied to the flat-cotorsion theory over a coherent ring, this provides a new description of the category of cotorsion Gorenstein flat modules; one that puts it on equal footing with the category of Gorenstein projective modules.
We associate a rigid C*-tensor category $C$ to a totally disconnected locally compact group $G$ and a compact open subgroup $K < G$. We characterize when $C$ has the Haagerup property or property (T), and when $C$ is weakly amenable. When $G$ is compactly generated, we prove that $C$ is essentially equivalent to the planar algebra associated by Jones and Burstein to a group acting on a locally finite bipartite graph. We then concretely realize $C$ as the category of bimodules generated by a hyperfinite subfactor.
We prove that the $L^2$-Betti numbers of a rigid $C^*$-tensor category vanish in the presence of an almost-normal subcategory with vanishing $L^2$-Betti numbers, generalising a result of Bader, Furman and Sauer. We apply this criterion to show that the categories constructed from totally disconnected groups by Arano and Vaes have vanishing $L^2$-Betti numbers. Given an almost-normal inclusion of discrete groups $Λ<Γ$, with $Γ$ acting on a type $\mathrm{II}_1$ factor $P$ by outer automorphisms, we relate the cohomology theory of the quasi-regular inclusion $P\rtimesΛ\subset P\rtimesΓ$ to that o…
A locally small category E is totally distributive (as defined by Rosebrugh-Wood) if there exists a string of adjoint functors t -| c -| y, where y : E --> E^ is the Yoneda embedding. Saying that E is lex totally distributive if, moreover, the left adjoint t preserves finite limits, we show that the lex totally distributive categories with a small set of generators are exactly the injective Grothendieck toposes, studied by Johnstone and Joyal. We characterize the totally distributive categories with a small set of generators as exactly the essential subtoposes of presheaf toposes, studied by K…
