Our work is a fundamental study of the notion of approximation in V-categories and in (U,V)-categories, for a quantale V and the ultrafilter monad U. We introduce auxiliary, approximating and Scott-continuous distributors, the way-below distributor, and continuity of V- and (U,V)-categories. We fully characterize continuous V-categories (resp. (U,V)-categories) among all cocomplete V-categories (resp. (U,V)-categories) in the same ways as continuous domains are characterized among all dcpos. By varying the choice of the quantale V and the notion of ideals, and by further allowing the ultrafilter monad to act on the quantale, we obtain a flexible theory of continuity that applies to partial orders and to metric and topological spaces. We demonstrate on examples that our theory unifies some major approaches to quantitative domain theory.
In this communication, motivated by a classical result that relates cocomplete quantale-enriched categories to modules over a quantale, we prove a similar result for quantale-enriched multicategories.
In this communication we generalize some recent results of Rump to categories enriched in a commutative quantale V. Using these results, we show that every quantale-enriched multicategory admits an injective hull. Finally, we expose a connection between the Isbell adjunction and the construction of injective hulls for topological spaces made by Banaschewski in 1973.
The familiar adjunction between ordered sets and completely distributive lattices can be extended to generalised metric spaces, that is, categories enriched over a quantale (a lattice of "truth values"), via an appropriate distributive law between the "down-set" monad and the "up-set" monad on the category of quantale-enriched categories. If the underlying lattice of the quantale is completely distributive, and if powers distribute over non-empty joins in the quantale, then this distributive law can be concretely formulated in terms of operations, equations and choice functions, similar to the…
This paper focus on the presheaf monad and its submonads on the realm of $V$-categories, for a quantale $V$. First we present two characterisations of presheaf submonads, both using $V$-distributors: one based on admissible classes of $V$-distributors, and other using Beck-Chevalley conditions on $V$-distributors. Then we focus on the study of the corresponding Eilenberg-Moore categories of algebras, having as main examples the formal ball monad and the so-called Lawvere monad.
It is known that the quantale of sup-preserving maps from a complete lattice to itself is a Frobenius quantale if and only if the lattice is completely distributive. Since completely distributive lattices are the nuclear objects in the autonomous category of complete lattices and sup-preserving maps, we study the above statement in a categorical setting. We introduce the notion of Frobenius structure in an arbitrary autonomous category, generalizing that of Frobenius quantale. We prove that the monoid of endomorphisms of a nuclear object has a Frobenius structure. If the environment category i…
Based on Garner's discovery that topological categories are total categories enriched in a quantaloid, this paper presents a series of results related to initial and final density in categorical topology via (co)density in quantaloid-enriched categories, focusing on (co-)Sierpiński objects, Galois correspondences and their fixed points.
We define and study the notion of a locally bounded enriched category over a (locally bounded) symmetric monoidal closed category, generalizing the locally bounded ordinary categories of Freyd and Kelly. In addition to proving several general results for constructing examples of locally bounded enriched categories and locally bounded closed categories, we demonstrate that locally bounded enriched categories admit fully enriched analogues of many of the convenient results enjoyed by locally bounded ordinary categories. In particular, we prove full enrichments of Freyd and Kelly's reflectivity a…
Braided-enriched monoidal categories were introduced in work of Morrison-Penneys, where they were characterized using braided central functors. Recent work of Kong-Yuan-Zhang-Zheng and Dell extended this characterization to an equivalence of 2-categories. Since their introduction, braided-enriched fusion categories have been used to describe certain phenomena in topologically ordered systems in theoretical condensed matter physics. While these systems are unitary, there was previously no general notion of unitarity for enriched categories in the literature. We supply the notion of unitarity fo…
We construct an exact completion for regular categories enriched in the cartesian closed category $\mathsf{Pos}$ of partially ordered sets and monotone functions by employing a suitable calculus of relations. We then characterize the embedding of any regular category into its completion and use this to obtain examples of concrete categories which arise as such completions. In particular, we prove that the exact completion in this enriched sense of both the categories of Stone and Priestley spaces is the category of compact ordered spaces of L. Nachbin. Finally, we consider the relationship bet…
In this paper we present background results in enriched category theory and enriched model category theory necessary for developing model categories of enriched functors suitable for doing functor calculus.
Cofunctors are a kind of map between categories which lift morphisms along an object assignment. In this paper, we introduce cofunctors between categories enriched in a distributive monoidal category. We define a double category of enriched categories, enriched functors, and enriched cofunctors, whose horizontal and vertical 2-categories have 2-cells given by enriched natural transformations between functors and cofunctors, respectively. Enriched lenses are defined as a compatible enriched functor and enriched cofunctor pair; weighted lenses, which were introduced by Perrone, are precisely len…
We prove a rectification theorem for enriched infinity-categories: If V is a nice monoidal model category, we show that the homotopy theory of infinity-categories enriched in V is equivalent to the familiar homotopy theory of categories strictly enriched in V. It follows, for example, that infinity-categories enriched in spectra or chain complexes are equivalent to spectral categories and dg-categories. A similar method gives a comparison result for enriched Segal categories, which implies that the homotopy theories of n-categories and (infinity,n)-categories defined by iterated infinity-categ…
This is the first of a series of papers on enriched infinity categories, seeking to reduce enriched higher category theory to the higher algebra of presentable infinity categories, which is better understood and can be approached via universal properties. In this paper, we introduce enriched presheaves on an enriched infinity category. We prove analogues of most familiar properties of presheaves. For example, we compute limits and colimits of presheaves, prove that all presheaves are colimits of representable presheaves, and prove a version of the Yoneda lemma.
We show that induced representations for a pair of $\textit{diffeological Lie groups}$ exist, in the form of an indexed colimit in the category of diffeological spaces.
We introduce the theory of enrichment over an internal monoidal category as a common generalization of both the standard theories of enriched and internal categories. The aim of the paper is to justify and contextualize the new notion by comparing it to other known generalizations of enrichment: namely, those for indexed categories and for generalized multicategories. It turns out that both of these notions are closely related to internal enrichment and, as a corollary, to each other.
