Let G \subset \R^k be a convex polyhedral cone with vertex at the origin given as the intersection of half spaces {G_i, i= 1, ..., N}, where n_i and d_i denote the inward normal and direction of constraint associated with G_i, respectively. Stability properties of a class of diffusion processes, constrained to take values in G, are studied under the assumption that the Skorokhod problem defined by the data {(n_i, d_i), i = 1, ..., N} is well posed and the Skorokhod map is Lipschitz continuous. Explicit conditions on the drift coefficient, b(\cdot), of the diffusion process are given under which the constrained process is positive recurrent and has a unique invariant measure. Define \C \Df{- \sum_{i=1}^N α_i d_i; α_i \ge 0, i \in \{1, ..., N}}. Then the key condition for stability is that there exists δ\in (0, \infty) and a bounded subset A of G such that for all x \in G\backslash A, b(x) \in \C and \dist(b(x), \partial \C) \ge δ, where \partial \C denotes the boundary of \C.
In this paper, we introduce an index which measures the strength of recurrence of symmetric Markov processes, and give some sufficient conditions for recurrence of direct products of symmetric diffusion processes. The index is given by the Dirichlet forms of the Markov processes. Moreover, as an application, we prove the recurrence of some multi-dimensional diffusion processes in random environments including zero potentials.
This work develops asymptotic properties of a class of switching jump diffusion processes. The processes under consideration may be viewed as a number of jump diffusion processes modulated by a random switching mechanism. The underlying processes feature in the switching process depends on the jump diffusions. In this paper, conditions for recurrence and positive recurrence are derived. Ergodicity is examined in detail. Existence of invariant probability measures is proved.
We provide some on-off type criteria for recurrence and transience of regime-switching diffusion processes using the theory of M-matrix and the Perron-Frobenius theorem. State-independent and state-dependent regime-switching diffusion processes in a finite space and a countable space are both studied. We put forward a finite partition method to deal with switching process in a countable space. As an application, we improve the known criteria for recurrence of linear regime-switching diffusion processes, and provide an on-off type criterion for a kind of nonlinear regime-switching diffusion pro…
We investigate the transience/recurrence of a non-Markovian, one-dimensional diffusion process which consists of a Brownian motion with a non-anticipating drift that has two phases---a transient to $+\infty$ mode which is activated when the diffusion is sufficiently near its running maximum, and a recurrent mode which is activated otherwise. We also consider the speed of a diffusion with a two-phase drift, where the drift is equal to a certain positive constant when the diffusion is sufficiently near its running maximum, and is equal to another positive constant otherwise.
This work continues and substantially extends our recent work on switching diffusions with the switching processes that depend on the past states and that take values in a countable state space. That is, the discrete components of the two-component processes take values in a countably infinite set and its switching rates at current time depend on the current value of the continuous component. This paper focuses on recurrence, positive recurrence, and weak stabilization of such systems. In particular, the paper aims to providing more verifiable conditions on recurrence and positive recurrence a…
We provide some criteria on the stability of regime-switching diffusion processes. Both the state-independent and state-dependent regime-switching diffusion processes with switching in a finite state space and an infinite countable state space are studied in this work. We provide two methods to deal with switching processes in an infinite countable state space. One is a finite partition method based on the nonsingular M-matrix theory. Another is an application of principal eigenvalue of a bilinear form. Our methods can deal with both linear and nonlinear regime-switching diffusion processes. M…
Sufficient conditions for a symmetric jump-diffusion process to be conservative and recurrent are given in terms of the volume of the state space and the jump kernel of the process. A number of examples are presented to illustrate the optimality of these conditions; in particular, the situation is allowed to be that the state space is topologically disconnected but the particles can jump from a connected component to the other components.
In this paper we find the transition densities of the basic affine jump-diffusion (BAJD), which is introduced by Duffie and Garleanu [D. Duffie and N. Garleanu, Risk and valuation of collateralized debt obligations, Financial Analysts Journal 57(1) (2001), pp. 41--59] as an extension of the CIR model with jumps. We prove the positive Harris recurrence and exponential ergodicity of the BAJD. Furthermore we prove that the unique invariant probability measure $π$ of the BAJD is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure and we also derive a closed form formula for the density func…
We study Markov processes conditioned so that their local time must grow slower than a prescribed function. Building upon recent work on Brownian motion with constrained local time in [5] and [33], we study transience and recurrence for a broad class of Markov processes. In order to understand the distribution of the local time, we determine the distribution of a non-decreasing Lévy process (the inverse local time) conditioned to remain above a given level which varies in time. We study a time-dependent region, in contrast to previous works in which a process is conditioned to remain in a fixe…
This work focuses on recurrence and ergodicity of switching diffusions consisting of continuous and discrete components, in which the discrete component takes values in a countably infinite set and the rates of switching at current time depend on the value of the continuous component over an interval including certain past history. Sufficient conditions for recurrence and ergodicity are given. Moreover, the relationship between systems of partial differential equations and recurrence when the switching is past-independent is established under suitable conditions.
Let $\mathcal{K}\subset R^d$, $d\ge2$, be a smooth, bounded domain satisfying $0\in\mathcal{K}$, and let $f(t),\ t\ge0$, be a smooth, continuous, nondecreasing function satisfying $f(0)>1$. Define $D_t=f(t)\mathcal{K}\subset R^d$. Consider a diffusion process corresponding to the generator $\frac12Δ+b(x)\nabla$ in the time-dependent domain $D_t$ with normal reflection at the time-dependent boundary. Consider also the one-dimensional diffusion process corresponding to the generator $\frac12\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+B(x)\frac d{dx}$ on the time-dependent domain $(1,f(t))$ with reflection at the boundary.…
We study the positive recurrence of piecewise Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (OU) diffusion processes, which arise from many-server queueing systems with phase-type service requirements. These diffusion processes exhibit different behavior in two regions of the state space, corresponding to "overload" (service demand exceeds capacity) and "underload" (service capacity exceeds demand). The two regimes cause standard techniques for proving positive recurrence to fail. Using and extending the framework of common quadratic Lyapunov functions from the theory of control, we construct Lyapunov functions for the …
Positive recurrence of a $d$-dimensional diffusion with switching and with one recurrent and one transient regimes and variable switching intensities is established under suitable conditions. The approach is based on embedded Markov chains.
We formulate simple criteria for positive Harris recurrence of strongly degenerate stochastic differential equations with smooth coefficients when the drift depends on time and space and is periodic in the time argument. There is no time dependence in the diffusion coefficient. Our criteria rely on control systems and the support theorem, existence of an attainable inner point of full weak Hoermander dimension and of some Lyapunov function. Positive Harris recurrence enables us to prove limit theorems for such diffusions. As an application, we consider a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley model for a s…
In this paper, we introduce a new class of processes which are diffusions with jumps driven by a multivariate nonlinear Hawkes process. Our goal is to study their long-time behavior. In the case of exponential memory kernels for the underlying Hawkes process we establish conditions for the positive Harris recurrence of the couple (X, Y), where X denotes the diffusion process and Y the piecewise deterministic Markov process (PDMP) defining the stochastic intensity of the driving Hawkes. As a direct consequence of the Harris recurrence, we obtain the ergodic theorem for X. Furthermore, we provid…
We consider the following problem in one-dimensional diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA). At time $t$, we have an "aggregate" consisting of $\Bbb{Z}\cap[0,R(t)]$ [with $R(t)$ a positive integer]. We also have $N(i,t)$ particles at $i$, $i>R(t)$. All these particles perform independent continuous-time symmetric simple random walks until the first time $t'>t$ at which some particle tries to jump from $R(t)+1$ to $R(t)$. The aggregate is then increased to the integers in $[0,R(t')]=[0,R(t)+1]$ [so that $R(t')=R(t)+1$] and all particles which were at $R(t)+1$ at time $t'{-}$ are removed from the s…
We consider a multidimensional time-homogeneous dynamical system and add a randomly perturbed time-dependent deterministic signal to some of its components, giving rise to a high-dimensional system of stochastic differential equations, which is driven by possibly very low-dimensional noise. Equations of this type commonly occur in biology when modelling neurons or in statistical mechanics for certain Hamiltonian systems. We provide verifiable conditions on the original deterministic dynamical system under which the solution to the respective stochastic system features a point in the interior o…
We study an infinite system of moving particles, where each particle is of type A or B. Particles perform independent random walks at rates D_A>0 and D_B>0, and the interaction is given by mutual annihilation A+B->0. The initial condition is i.i.d. with finite first moment. We show that this system is site-recurrent, that is, each site is visited infinitely many times. We also generalize a lower bound on the density decay of Bramson and Lebowitz by considering a construction that handles different jump rates.
In this paper, as a main result, we derive a Chung-Fuchs type condition for the recurrence of Feller processes associated with pseudo-differential operators. In the Lévy process case, this condition reduces to the classical and well-known Chung-Fuchs condition. Further, we also discuss the recurrence and transience of Feller processes with respect to the dimension of the state space and Pruitt indices and the recurrence and transience of Feller-Dynkin diffusions and stable-like processes. Finally, in the one-dimensional symmetric case, we study perturbations of Feller processes which do not af…
Constrained diffusions in convex polyhedral domains with a general oblique reflection field, and with a diffusion coefficient scaled by a small parameter, are considered. Using an interior Dirichlet heat kernel lower bound estimate for second order elliptic operators in bounded domains from [13], certain uniform in the scaling parameter lower bounds on transition densities of such constrained diffusions are established. These lower bounds together with results from [1] give, under additional stability conditions, an exponential leveling property, as the scaling parameter approaches zero, for e…
This paper studies diffusion processes constrained to the positive orthant under infinitesimal changes in the drift. Our first main result states that any constrained function and its (left) drift-derivative is the unique solution to an augmented Skorohod problem. Our second main result uses this characterization to establish a basic adjoint relationship for the stationary distribution of the constrained diffusion process jointly with its left-derivative process.
We consider a class of jump-diffusion processes, constrained to a polyhedral cone $G\subset\R^n$, where the constraint vector field is constant on each face of the boundary. The constraining mechanism corrects for ``attempts'' of the process to jump outside the domain. Under Lipschitz continuity of the Skorohod map Γ, it is known that there is a cone \mathcalC such that the image Γϕof a deterministic linear trajectory ϕremains bounded if and only if \dotϕ\in\mathcalC. Denoting the generator of a corresponding unconstrained jump-diffusion by \cll, we show that a key condition for the process to…
We study the Poisson equation Lu+f=0 in R^d, where L is the infinitesimal generator of a diffusion process. In this paper, we allow the second-order part of the generator L to be degenerate, provided a local condition of Doeblin type is satisfied, so that, if we also assume a condition on the drift which implies recurrence, the diffusion process is ergodic. The equation is understood in a weak sense. Our results are then applied to diffusion approximation.
We study the asymptotic relations between certain singular and constrained control problems for one-dimensional diffusions with both discounted and ergodic objectives. By constrained control problems we mean that controlling is allowed only at independent Poisson arrival times. We show that when the underlying diffusion is recurrent, the solutions of the discounted problems converge in Abelian sense to those of their ergodic counterparts. Moreover, we show that the solutions of the constrained problems converge to those of their singular counterparts when the Poisson rate tends to infinity. We…
We study a family of conservative interacting particle systems with degenerate rates called noncooperative kinetically constrained lattice gases. We prove for all models in this family the diffusive scaling of the relaxation time, the positivity of the diffusion coefficient, and the positivity of the self-diffusion coefficient.
In the hydrodynamic regime, the evolution of a stochastic lattice gas with symmetric hopping rules is described by a diffusion equation with density-dependent diffusion coefficient encapsulating all microscopic details of the dynamics. This diffusion coefficient is, in principle, determined by a Green-Kubo formula. In practice, even when the equilibrium properties of a lattice gas are analytically known, the diffusion coefficient cannot be computed except when a lattice gas additionally satisfies the gradient condition. We develop a procedure to systematically obtain analytical approximations …
Kinetically constrained lattice gases (KCLG) are interacting particle systems on the integer lattice $\mathbb Z^d$ with hard core exclusion and Kawasaki type dynamics. Their peculiarity is that jumps are allowed only if the configuration satisfies a constraint which asks for enough empty sites in a certain local neighborhood. KCLG have been introduced and extensively studied in physics literature as models of glassy dynamics. We focus on the most studied class of KCLG, the Kob Andersen (KA) models. We analyze the behavior of a tracer (i.e. a tagged particle) at equilibrium. We prove that for a…
We describe the motion of a tracer in an environment given by a kinetically constrained spin model (KCSM) at equilibrium. We check convergence of its trajectory properly rescaled to a Brownian motion and positivity of the diffusion coefficient $D$ as soon as the spectral gap of the environment is positive (which coincides with the ergodicity region under general conditions). Then we study the asymptotic behavior of $D$ when the density $1-q$ of the environment goes to $1$ in two classes of KCSM. For noncooperative models, the diffusion coefficient $D$ scales like a power of $q$, with an expone…
