Generalizing F-nilpotent completion for a ring spectrum F we first define the notion of completion with respect to a thick subcategory in a monogenic stable homotopy category. Specializing this to the thick subcategory generated by F-injectives gives an injective completion functor. This is the completion functor adapted to the modified Adams spectral sequence, which uses absolute instead of relative injective resolutions. Finally we show, that both constructions coincide for suitable ring spectra.
The purpose of this paper is to give information on the FI-homology of the standard injective cogenerators of the category of FI-modules, where FI is the category of finite sets and injections. Working over a field k of characteristic zero, a full calculation is given in homological degree zero and a conjectural description in higher homological degree. The proof of the main theorem reduces to a calculation in representation theory of the symmetric groups, exploiting the Young orthonormal basis.
We give a proof of the Jardine-Tillmann generalized group completion theorem. It is much in the spirit of the original homology fibration approach by McDuff and Segal, but follows a modern treatment of homotopy colimits, using as little simplicial technology as possible. We compare simplicial and topological definitions of homology fibrations.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
The purpose of this note is to clarify some details in McDuff and Segal's proof of the group-completion theorem and to generalize both this and the homology fibration criterion of McDuff to homology with twisted coefficients. This will be used in forthcoming work to identify the limiting homology of "oriented" configuration spaces, which doubly cover the classical configuration spaces of distinct unordered points in a manifold.
By proving that several new complexes of embedded disks are highly connected, we obtain several new homological stability results. Our main result is homological stability for topological chiral homology on an open manifold with coefficients in certain partial framed $E_n$-algebras. Using this, we prove a special case of a conjecture of Vakil and Wood on homological stability for complements of closures of particular strata in the symmetric powers of an open manifold and we prove that the bounded symmetric powers of closed manifolds satisfy homological stability rationally.
We show that the associated Lie algebra of the Malcev $\mathbb{Q}$-completion of the lamplighter group is the pronilpotent completion of the lamplighter Lie algebra. We also prove that the homology of this completed Lie algebra is of uncountable dimension on each degree.
We study a special type of $E_\infty$-operads that govern strictly unital $E_\infty$-coalgebras (and algebras) over the ring of integers. Morphisms of coalgebras over such an operad are defined by using universal $E_\infty$-bimodules. Thus we obtain a category of $E_\infty$-coalgebras. It turns out that if the homology of an $E_\infty$-coalgebra have no torsion, then there is a natural way to define an $E_\infty$-coalgebra structure on the homology so that the resulting coalgebra be isomorphic to the initial $E_\infty$-coalgebra in our category. We also discuss some invariants of the $E_\infty…
These are notes, by Z. Fiedorowicz, from lectures given by J. Frank Adams at the University of Chicago in spring of 1973. They give an elegant axiomatic presentation of localization and completion in algebraic topology. The construction of localization and completion functors with respect to an arbitrary generalized homology theory is derived from the axioms by using the Brown representability theorem. These notes were never formally published, due to an apparent flaw in the proof. The relevant representable functors could not be shown to be set-valued, as opposed to class-valued. Subsequent w…
The aim of this short paper is to prove a TQ-Whitehead theorem for nilpotent structured ring spectra. We work in the framework of symmetric spectra and algebras over operads in modules over a commutative ring spectrum. Our main result can be thought of as a TQ-homology analog for structured ring spectra of Dror's generalized Whitehead theorem for topological spaces; here TQ-homology is short for topological Quillen homology. We also prove retract theorems for the TQ-completion and homotopy completion of nilpotent structured ring spectra.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we consider any higher algebraic structures that can be described as algebras over an operad O. We prove that the fundamental adjunction comparing O-algebra spectra with coalgebra spectra over the associated comonad K, via topological Quillen homology (or TQ-homology), can be turned into an equivalence of homotopy theories by replacing O-algebras with the full subcategory of 0-connected O-algebras. This resolves in the affirmative the 0-connected case of a conjecture of Francis-Gaitsgory. This derived Koszul duality result can be thought of as the s…
We prove an equivariant localization theorem over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero for smooth quotient stacks by reductive groups $X/G$ in the setting of derived loop spaces as well as Hochschild homology and its cyclic variants. We show that the derived loop spaces of the stack $X/G$ and its classical $z$-fixed point stack $π_0(X^z)/G^z$ become equivalent after completion along a semisimple parameter $[z] \in G//G$, implying the analogous statement for Hochschild and cyclic homology of the dg category of perfect complexes $\text{Perf}(X/G)$. We then prove an analogue of th…
Working in the Arone-Ching framework for homotopical descent, it follows that the Bousfield-Kan completion map with respect to integral homology is the unit of a derived adjunction. We prove that this derived adjunction, comparing spaces with coalgebra complexes over the associated integral homology comonad, via integral chains, can be turned into a derived equivalence by replacing spaces with the full subcategory of simply connected spaces. In particular, this provides an integral chains characterization of the homotopy type of simply connected spaces.
We consider a functor from the category of groups to itself $G\mapsto \mathbb Z_\infty G$ that we call right exact $\mathbb Z$-completion of a group. It is connected with the pronilpotent completion $\hat G$ by the short exact sequence $1\to {\varprojlim}^1\: M_n G \to \mathbb Z_\infty G \to \hat G \to 1,$ where $M_n G$ is $n$-th Baer invariant of $G.$ We prove that $\mathbb Z_\infty π_1(X)$ is an invariant of homological equivalence of a space $X$. Moreover, we prove an analogue of Stallings' theorem: if $G\to G'$ is a 2-connected group homomorphism, then $\mathbb Z_\infty G\cong \mathbb Z_\i…

In this paper we present a novel method, $\textit{Knowledge Persistence}$ ($\mathcal{KP}$), for faster evaluation of Knowledge Graph (KG) completion approaches. Current ranking-based evaluation is quadratic in the size of the KG, leading to long evaluation times and consequently a high carbon footprint. $\mathcal{KP}$ addresses this by representing the topology of the KG completion methods through the lens of topological data analysis, concretely using persistent homology. The characteristics of persistent homology allow $\mathcal{KP}$ to evaluate the quality of the KG completion looking only …
In 1964, John Stallings established an important relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its lower central series. We establish a similar relationship between the low-dimensional homology of a group and its derived series. We also define a torsion-free-solvable completion of a group that is analogous to the Malcev completion, with the role of the lower central series replaced by the derived series. We prove that the torsion-free-solvable completion is invariant under rational homology equivalence.
The objective of this paper is to introduce and study completions and local homology of comodules over Hopf algebroids, extending previous work of Greenlees and May in the discrete case. In particular, we relate module-theoretic to comodule-theoretic completion, construct various local homology spectral sequences, and derive a tilting-theoretic interpretation of local duality for modules. Our results translate to quasi-coherent sheaves over global quotient stacks and feed into a novel approach to the chromatic splitting conjecture.
We give an overview of five rationalization theories for spaces (Bousfield-Kan's $\mathbb Q$-completion; Sullivan's rationalization; Bousfield's homology rationalization; Casacuberta-Peschke's $Ω$-rationalization; Gómez-Tato-Halperin-Tanré's $π_1$-fiberwise rationalization) that extend the classical rationalization of simply connected spaces. We also give an overview of the corresponding rationalization theories for groups ($\mathbb Q$-completion; $H\mathbb Q$-localization; Baumslag rationalization) that extend the classical Malcev completion.
The aim of this short paper is to establish a spectral algebra analog of the Bousfield-Kan "fibration lemma" under appropriate conditions. We work in the context of algebraic structures that can be described as algebras over an operad $\mathcal{O}$ in symmetric spectra. Our main result is that completion with respect to topological Quillen homology (or TQ-completion, for short) preserves homotopy fibration sequences provided that the base and total $\mathcal{O}$-algebras are connected. Our argument essentially boils down to proving that the natural map from the homotopy fiber to its TQ-complet…
We extend some classical results of Bousfield on homology localizations and nilpotent completions to a presentably symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category $\mathscr{M}$ admitting a multiplicative left-complete $t$-structure. If $E$ is a homotopy commutative algebra in $\mathscr{M}$ we show that $E$-nilpotent completion, $E$-localization, and a suitable formal completion agree on bounded below objects when $E$ satisfies some reasonable conditions.
The goal of this short paper is to study the convergence of the Taylor tower of the identity functor in the context of operadic algebras in spectra. Specifically, we show that if $A$ is a $(-1)$-connected $\mathcal{O}$-algebra with $0$-connected $\mathsf{TQ}$-homology spectrum $\mathsf{TQ}(A)$, then there is a natural weak equivalence $P_\infty$(id)$A\simeq A_\mathsf{TQ}^\wedge$ between the limit of the Taylor tower of the identity functor evaluated on $A$ and the $\mathsf{TQ}$-completion of $A$. Since, in this context, the identity functor is only known to be $0$-analytic, this result extends…
For a homological functor from a triangulated category to an abelian category satisfying some technical assumptions we construct a tower of interpolation categories. These are categories over which the functor factorizes and which capture more and more information according to the injective dimension of the images of the functor. The categories are obtained by proving the existence of truncated versions of resolution or $E_2$-model structures. Examples of functors fitting in our framework are given by every generalized homology theory represented by a ring spectrum satisfying the Adams-Atiyah …
We generalize Keller's construction \cite{Kel11} of deformed $n$-Calabi-Yau completions to the relative context. This gives a construction that extends any given dg functor $F : A \rightarrow B$ between smooth dg categories to a dg functor $\widetilde{F} : \widetilde{A} \rightarrow \widetilde{B}$, together with a family of deformations of $(\widetilde{A},\widetilde{B},\widetilde{F})$ parametrized by relative negative cyclic homology classes $\widetildeη \in HN_{n-2}(B, A)$. We prove that these extensions admit relative $n$-Calabi-Yau structures in the sense of \cite{BD19}. In particular, this …
We prove that the Farrell-Jones assembly map for connective algebraic K-theory is rationally injective, under mild homological finiteness conditions on the group and assuming that a weak version of the Leopoldt-Schneider conjecture holds for cyclotomic fields. This generalizes a result of Bökstedt, Hsiang, and Madsen, and leads to a concrete description of a large direct summand of $K_n(\mathbb{Z}[G])\otimes_{\mathbb{Z}}\mathbb{Q}$ in terms of group homology. In many cases the number theoretic conjectures are true, so we obtain rational injectivity results about assembly maps, in particular fo…
