In this paper we study the problem of bifurcation from the origin of solutions of elliptic Dirichlet problems involving critical Sobolev exponent, defined on a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R} ^N$: we prove that the first critical case are $N=3, 4$ (not only N=3, as just proved by Brezis and Nirenberg), exhibiting two nonexistence results for a class of elliptic problem in these dimensions.
In this paper we deal with nonnegative distributional supersolutions for a class of linear elliptic equations involving inverse-square potentials and logarithmic weights. We prove sharp nonexistence results.
We prove nonexistence of nontrivial, possibly sign changing, stable solutions to a class of quasilinear elliptic equations with a potential on Riemannian manifolds, under suitable weighted volume growth conditions on geodesic balls.
In this paper we study nonexistence of non-negative distributional supersolutions for a class of semilinear elliptic equations involving inverse-square potentials.
Involutivity is a well known necessary condition for integrability of smooth tangent distributions. We show that this condition is still necessary for integrability with Sobolev surfaces. We specialize our study to the left invariant horizontal distribution of the first Heisenberg group $\H^1$. Here we answer a question raised in a paper by Z.M.Balogh, R.Hoefer-Isenegger, J.T.Tyson.
We prove nonexistence of nonconstant global minimizers with limit at infinity of the semilinear elliptic equation $-Δu=f(u)$ in the whole $R^N$, where $f\in C^1(R)$ is a general nonlinearity and $N\geq 1$ is any dimension. As a corollary of this result, we establish nonexistence of nonconstant bounded radial global minimizers of the previous equation.
In this paper, we primarily consider the following semilinear elliptic equation \begin{eqnarray*} \arraycolsep=1pt\left\{ \begin{array}{lll} \displaystyle -Δu= h(x,u)\quad \ &{\rm in}\ Ω,\\[1.5mm] \phantom{ -Δ} \displaystyle u\ge 0\qquad &{\rm on}\ \partialΩ, \end{array}\right. \end{eqnarray*} where $Ω$ is an exterior domain in $R^N$ with $N\ge 3$, and derive optimal nonexistence results of positive supersolution. Our argument is based on a nonexistence result of positive supersolution of a linear elliptic problem with Hardy potential. We also establish sharp nonexistence results of positive s…
In this paper we prove the nonexistence of nontrivial solution to \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu =f(u) &\text{in }Ω, \\ u=0 &\text{on } \partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} being $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ ($N\in \mathbb{N}$) a bounded domain and $f$ locally Lispchitz with non-positive primitive.
In this work, we prove the existence of least energy nodal solution for a class of elliptic problem in both cases, bounded and unbounded domain, when the nonlinearity has exponential critical growth in $\mathbb{R}^2$. Moreover, we also prove a nonexistence result of least energy nodal solution for the autonomous case in whole $\mathbb{R}^{2}$.
We present the best constant and the existence of extremal functions for an Improved Hardy-Sobolev inequality. We prove that, under a proper transformation, this inequality is equivalent to the Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb{R}^N$. We also discuss the connection of the related functional spaces and as a result we obtain some Caffarelli - Kohn - Nirenberg inequalities. Our starting point is the existence of a minimizer for the Bliss' inequality and the indirect dependence of the Hardy inequality at the origin.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, with $N\geq 5$, $a>0$, $α\geq 0$ and $2^*=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. We show that the the exponent $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ plays a critical role regarding the existence of least energy (or ground state) solutions of the Neumann problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu+au=u^{2^*-1}-αu^{q-1}&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ u>0&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0&\mbox{on}\ \partialΩ. \end{array}\right. $$ Namely, we prove that when $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ there exists an $α_{0}>0$ such that the problem has a least energy solution if $α<α_{0}$ and has no leas…
We consider the second order semilinear elliptic system $Δu= p\left( x\right) v^α,$ $Δv= q\left(x\right) u^β,$ where $x \in \mathbf{R}^N,$ $N \geq 3,$ $α$ and $β$ are positive constants, $p$ and $q$ are nonnegative continuous functions. We prove that nontrivial nonnegative entire solutions fail to exist if the functions $p$ and $q$ are of slow decay.
We introduce a new method for proving the nonexistence of positive supersolutions of elliptic inequalities in unbounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$. The simplicity and robustness of our maximum principle-based argument provides for its applicability to many elliptic inequalities and systems, including quasilinear operators such as the $p$-Laplacian, and nondivergence form fully nonlinear operators such as Bellman-Isaacs operators. Our method gives new and optimal results in terms of the nonlinear functions appearing in the inequalities, and applies to inequalities holding in the whole space as w…
We study the existence and nonexistence of positive solutions in the whole Euclidean space of coercive quasi-linear elliptic equations such as \[ Δ_p u = f(u)\pm g(\left|\nabla u\right|) \] where $f\in C([0,\infty))$ and $g\in C^{0,1}([0,\infty)) $ are strictly increasing with $ f(0)=g(0)=0$. Among other things we obtain generalized integral conditions of Keller-Osserman type. In the particular case of plus sign on the right-hand side we obtain that different conditions are needed when $p\geq 2$ or $p\leq 2$, due to the degeneracy of the operator.
In this paper a Pohozaev type inequality is stated for variable exponent Sobolev spaces in order to prove non existence of nontrivial weak solutions for a Dirichlet problem with non-standard growth. The obtained results generalize a previous work of M. Ôtani.
We study a class of fractional elliptic problems of the form $\Ds u= f(u)$ in the half space $\R^N_+:=\{x \in \R^N\::\: x_1>0\}$ with the complementary Dirichlet condition $u \equiv 0$ in $\R^N \setminus \R^N_+$. Under mild assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$, we show that bounded positive solutions are increasing in $x_1$. For the special case $f(u)=u^q$, we deduce nonexistence of positive bounded solutions in the case where $q \ge 1$ and $q<\frac{N-1+2s}{N-1-2s}$ if $N \ge 1+2s$. We do not require integrability assumptions on the solutions we study.
In this paper we study a class of fractional elliptic problems of the form $$ \Ds u= f(x,u) \quad \textrm{in} Øu=0\quad \textrm{in} \R^N \setminus Ø,$$ where $s\in(0,1)$. We prove nonexistence of positive solutions when $Ø$ is star-shaped and $f$ is supercritical. We also derive a nonexistence result for subcritical $f$ in some unbounded domains. The argument relies on the method of moving spheres applied to a reformulated problem using the Caffarelli-Silvestre extension \cite{CSilv} of a solution of the above problem. The standard approach in the case $s=1$ using Pohozaev type identities does…
We establish a "low rank property" for Sobolev mappings that pointwise solve a first order nonlinear system of PDEs, whose smooth solutions have the so-called "contact property". As a consequence, Sobolev mappings from an open set of the plane, taking values in the first Heisenberg group and that have almost everywhere maximal rank must have images with positive 3-dimensional Hausdorff measure with respect to the sub-Riemannian distance of the Heisenberg group. This provides a complete solution to a question raised in a paper by Z. M. Balogh, R. Hoefer-Isenegger and J. T. Tyson. Our approach d…
In this paper we deal with the cubic Schrödinger system $ -Δu_i = \sum_{j=1}^n β_{ij}u_j^2 u_i$, $u_1,\dots,u_n \geq 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N (N\leq 3)$, where $β=(β_{i,j})_{ij}$ is a symmetric matrix with real coefficients and $β_{ii}\geq 0$ for every $i=1,\ldots,n$. We analyse the existence and nonexistence of nontrivial solutions in connection with the properties of the matrix $β$, and provide a complete characterization in dimensions $N=1,2$. Extensions to more general power-type nonlinearities are given.

In this paper, we give a sufficient condition for the existence, nonexistence and uniqueness of coexistence of positive solutions to a rather general type of elliptic competition system.
In this paper we are concerned with a class of elliptic differential inequalities with a potential both on $\erre^m$ and on Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we investigate the effect of the geometry of the underlying manifold and of the behavior of the potential at infinity on nonexistence of nonnegative solutions.
In this paper we are concerned with a class of elliptic differential inequalities with a potential in bounded domains both of $\mathbf{R}^m$ and of Riemannian manifolds. In particular, we investigate the effect of the behavior of the potential at the boundary of the domain on nonexistence of nonnegative solutions.
It is well known that the Euclidean Sobolev inequality holds on any Cartan-Hadamard manifold of dimension $ n\ge 3 $, i.e. any complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. As a byproduct of the Cartan-Hadamard conjecture, a longstanding problem in the mathematical literature settled only very recently in a breakthrough paper by Ghomi and Spruck, we can now assert that the optimal constant is also Euclidean, namely it coincides with the one achieved in the Euclidean space $ \mathbb{R}^n $ by the Aubin-Talenti functions. One may ask whether there exist at …
We consider positive solution to the weighted elliptic problem \begin{equation*} \left \{ \begin{array}{ll} -{\rm div} (|x|^θ\nabla u)=|x|^\ell u^p \;\;\; \mbox{in $\mathbb{R}^N \backslash {\overline B}$},\\ u=0 \;\;\; \mbox{on $\partial B$}, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} where $B$ is the standard unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^N$. We give a complete answer for the existence question when $N':=N+θ>2$. In particular, for $N' > 2$ and $τ:=\ell-θ>-2$, it is shown that the problem admits a unique positive radial solution for $p>p_s:=\frac{N'+2+2τ}{N'-2}$, while for any $ 0<p \leq p_s$, the only no…
In this paper, we present some suitable distributional identities of the solutions for nonhomogeneous elliptic equations involving the Hardy-Leray potentials and study qualitative properties of the solutions to the corresponding nonhomogeneous problems by the distributional identities. We address some applications on the nonexistence of some nonhomogeneous problems with the Hardy-Leray potentials and the nonexistence principle eigenvalue with some indefinite potentials.
The paper deals with positive radial solutions to a nonlinear elliptic equation with singular and decaying potential, for which several existence and nonexistence results are known, resting upon suitable compatibility conditions between the decaying rate of the potential and the growth rate of the nonlinearity. The problem of the existence is still open for essentially three cases and we give a negative answer to one of such cases.
In this paper, we consider the following PDE involving two Sobolev-Hardy critical exponents, \label{0.1} {& Δu + λ\frac{u^{2^*(s_1)-1}}{|x|^{s_1}} + \frac{u^{2^*(s_2)-1}}{|x|^{s_2}} =0 \text{in} Ω, & u=0 \qquad \text{on} Ω, where $0 \le s_2 < s_1 \le 2$, $0 \ne λ\in \Bbb R$ and $0 \in \partial Ω$. The existence (or nonexistence) for least-energy solutions has been extensively studied when $s_1=0$ or $s_2=0$. In this paper, we prove that if $0< s_2 < s_1 <2$ and the mean curvature of $\partial Ω$ at 0 $H(0)<0$, then \eqref{0.1} has a least-energy solution. Therefore, this paper has completed th…
We deals with nonlinear elliptic Dirichlet problems of the form $${\rm div}(|D u|^{p-2}D u )+f(u)=0\quad\mbox{ in }Ω,\qquad u\in H^{1,p}_0(Ω) $$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, $p> 1$ and $f$ has supercritical growth from the viewpoint of Sobolev embedding. Our aim is to show that there exist bounded contractible non star-shaped domains $Ω$, arbitrarily close to domains with nontrivial topology, such that the problem does not have nontrivial solutions. For example, we prove that if $n=2$, $1<p<2$, $f(u)=|u|^{q-2}u$ with $q>{2p\over 2-p}$ and $Ω=\{(ρ\cosθ,ρ\sinθ)\ :\ …
Our purpose is to find positive solutions $u \in D^{1,2}(\rz^N)$ of the semilinear elliptic problem $-\laplace u - λV(x) u = h(x) u^{p-1}$ for $2<p$. The functions $V$ and $h$ may have an indefinite sign and the linearized operator need not to have a first (principal) eigenvalue, e.g. we allow $V\equiv 1$. We give precise existence and nonexistence criteria, which depend on $λ$ and on the growth of $h^{-}$ and $h^{+}/V^+$. Existence theorems are obtained by constrained minimization. The mountain pass theorem leads to a second solution.

We study the a priori estimates,existence/nonexistence of radial sign changing solution, and the Palais-Smale characterisation of the problem $-\De_{\Bn}u - \la u = |u|^{p-1}u, u\in H^1(\Bn)$ in the hyperbolic space $\Bn$ where $1<p\leq\frac{N+2}{N-2}$. We will also prove the existence of sign changing solution to the Hardy-Sobolev-Mazya equation and the critical Grushin problem.
We prove that if the elliptic problem $-Δu+b(x)|\nabla u|=c(x)u$ with $c\ge0$ has a positive supersolution in a domain $Ω$ of $ \IR^{N\ge 3}$, then $c,b$ must satisfy the inequality \[\sqrt{ \int_Ωcϕ^2}\le \sqrt{ \int_Ω| \nablaϕ|^2}+\sqrt{ \int_Ω\frac{b^2}{4}ϕ^2},~~~ϕ\in C_c^\infty(Ω).\] As an application, we obtain Liouville type theorems for positive supersolutions in exterior domains when $c(x)-\frac{b^2(x)}{4}>0$ for large $|x|$, but unlike the known results we allow the case $\liminf_{|x|\rightarrow\infty}c(x)-\frac{b^2(x)}{4}=0$. Also the weights $b$ and $c$ are allowed to be unbounded. …
We study the Choquard equation with a local perturbation \begin{equation*} -Δu=λu+(I_α\ast|u|^p)|u|^{p-2}u+μ|u|^{q-2}u,\ x\in \mathbb{R}^{N} \end{equation*} having prescribed mass \begin{equation*} \int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^2dx=a^2. \end{equation*} For a $L^2$-critical or $L^2$-supercritical perturbation $μ|u|^{q-2}u$, we prove nonexistence, existence and symmetry of normalized ground states, by using the mountain pass lemma, the Pohožaev constraint method, the Schwartz symmetrization rearrangements and some theories of polarizations. In particular, our results cover the Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev …
We give three examples of second-order elliptic operators with nonlocal boundary conditions of the Ventsel type that admit a closure in the space of continuous functions, but do not generate a Feller semigroup (i.e., a strongly continuous contractive nonnegative semigroup).
We consider the supercritical problem -Δu = |u|^{p-2}u in Ω, u=0 on \partialΩ, where $Ω$ is a bounded smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N},$ $N\geq3,$ and $p\geq2^{*}:= 2N/(N-2).$ Bahri and Coron showed that if $Ω$ has nontrivial homology this problem has a positive solution for $p=2^{*}.$ However, this is not enough to guarantee existence in the supercritical case. For $p\geq 2(N-1)/(N-3)$ Passaseo exhibited domains carrying one nontrivial homology class in which no nontrivial solution exists. Here we give examples of domains whose homology becomes richer as $p$ increases. More precisely, we show…
In this paper we study existence and nonexistence of nonnegative distributional solutions for a class of semilinear fractional elliptic equations involving the Hardy potential.
We show the existence of nodal solutions to perturbed quasilinear elliptic equations with critical Sobolev exponent on compact Riemannian manifolds. A nonexistence result is also given.
On a compact Riemannian manifold, we prove the existence of multiple solutions for an elliptic equation with critical Sobolev growth and critical Hardy potential.
We deal with Dirichlet problems of the form $$ Δu+f(u)=0 \mbox{ in }Ω,\qquad u=0\ \mbox{ on }\partial Ω$$ where $Ω$ is a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 3$, and $f$ has supercritical growth from the viewpoint of Sobolev embedding. In particular, we consider the case where $Ω$ is a tubular domain $T_\varepsilon(Γ_k)$ with thickness $\varepsilon>0$ and centre $Γ_k$, a $k$-dimensional, smooth, compact submanifold of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our main result concerns the case where $k=1$ and $Γ_k$ is contractible in itself. In this case we prove that the problem does not have nontrivial solutions fo…
A priori estimates for the weak solutions the Dirichlet problem for the uniformly higher-order elliptic equations in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \Rn$ in generalized weighted Sobolev-Morrey spaces are obtained.
We consider the semilinear elliptic equation $$ -Δu = |x|^αu^p \quad \hbox{in } \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $N\ge 3$, $α>-2$ and $p>1$. We show that there are no positive solutions provided that the exponent $p$ additionally verifies $$ 1<p<\frac{N+2α+2}{N-2}. $$ This solves an open problem posed in previous literature, where only the radially symmetric case was fully understood. We also characterize all positive solutions when $p=\frac{N+2α+2}{N-2}$ and $-2<α<0$.
Elliptic problems with additional unknown distributions in boundary conditions are investigated in Besov and Sobolev-Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of low regularity, specifically of an arbitrary negative order. We find that the problems induce Fredholm bounded operators on appropriate pairs of these spaces.
We prove weighted and mixed-norm Sobolev estimates for fully nonlinear elliptic and parabolic equations in the whole space under a relaxed convexity condition with almost VMO dependence on space-time variables. The corresponding interior and boundary estimates are also obtained.
We consider a semilinear elliptic problem with a nonlinear term which is the product of a power and the Riesz potential of a power. This family of equations includes the Choquard or nonlinear Schroedinger--Newton equation. We show that for some values of the parameters the equation does not have nontrivial nonnegative supersolutions in exterior domains. The same techniques yield optimal decay rates when supersolutions exists.
New embeddings of weighted Sobolev spaces are established. Using such embeddings, we obtain the existence and regularity of positive solutions with Navier boundary value problems for a weighted fourth order elliptic equation. We also obtain Liouville type results for the related equation. Some problems are still open.
Petrovskii elliptic systems of linear differential equations given on a closed smooth manifold are investigated on the extended Sobolev scale. This scale consists of all Hilbert spaces that are interpolation spaces with respect to the Hilbert Sobolev scale. Theorems on the solvability of the elliptic systems on the extended Sobolev scale are proved. An a priori estimate for solutions is obtained, and their regularity is studied.
Under appropriate assumptions on the $N(Ω)$-fucntion, the De Giorgi process is presented in the framework of Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev space to prove the Hölder continuity of fully nonlinear elliptic problems. As the applications, the Hölder continuity of the minimizers for a class of the energy functionals in Musielak-Orlicz-Sobolev spaces is proved; and furthermore, the Hölder continuity of the weak solutions for a class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations is provided.
We provide a self-contained proof of the solvability and regularity of a Hodge-type elliptic system, wherein the divergence and curl of a vector field are prescribed in an open, bounded, Sobolev-class domain, and either the normal component or the tangential components of the vector field are prescribed on the boundary. The proof is based on a regularity theory for vector elliptic equations set on Sobolev-class domains and with Sobolev-class coefficients.
