We prove a volume-rigidity theorem for fuchsian representations of fundamental groups of hyperbolic k-manifolds into Isom(H^n). Namely, we show that if M is a complete hyperbolic k-manifold with finite volume, then the volume of any representation of its fundamental group into Isom(H^n), 3 <= k <= n, is less than the volume of M, and the volume is maximal if and only if the representation is discrete, faithful and ``k-fuchsian''.
In this paper, we construct a right-angled 5-polytope P of finite volume such that all the right-angled Coxeter groups with Fuchsian ends obtained from P are locally rigid.
We consider complex projective structures on Riemann surfaces and their groups of projective automorphisms. We show that the structures achieving the maximal possible number of projective automorphisms allowed by their genus are precisely the Fuchsian uniformizations of Hurwitz surfaces by hyperbolic metrics. More generally we show that Galois Bely\uı curves are precisely those Riemann surfaces for which the Fuchsian uniformization is the unique complex projective structure invariant under the full group of biholomorphisms.
The paper contains a new proof that a complete, non-compact hyperbolic $3$-manifold $M$ with finite volume contains an immersed, closed, quasi-Fuchsian surface.
Making use of the dual Bonahon-Schläfli formula, we prove that the dual volume of the convex core of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold $M$ is bounded by an explicit constant, depending only on the topology of $M$, times the Weil-Petersson distance between the hyperbolic structures on the upper and lower boundary components of the convex core of $M$.
Measured foliations at infinity of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds are a natural analog at infinity to the measured bending laminations on the boundary of its convex core. We show that given a pair of arational measured foliations $(\mathsf{F}_{+},\mathsf{F}_{-})$ which fill a closed hyperbolic surface $S$, for $t>0$ sufficiently small, $t\mathsf{F}_{+}$ and $t\mathsf{F}_{-}$ can be uniquely realised as the measured foliations at infinity of a quasi-Fuchsian manifold homeomorphic to $S\times \mathbb{R}$, which is sufficiently close to the Fuchsian locus. Here arationality means that the corresponding…
In this paper, we prove that if a quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifold contains a minimal surface whose principle curvature is less than 1, then it admits a foliation such that each leaf is a surface of constant mean curvature. The key method that we use here is volume preserving mean curvature flow.
We classify all torsion-free derived arithmetic Fuchsian groups of genus two by commensurability class. In particular, we show that there exist no such groups arising from quaternion algebras over number fields of degree greater than 5. We also prove some results on the existence and form of maximal orders for a class of quaternion algebras related to these groups. Using these results in conjunction with a computer program, one can determine an explicit set of generators for each derived arithmetic Fuchsian group containing a torsion-free subgroup of genus two. We show this for a number of exa…
In this article, we show some domination results on the Hitchin fibration, mainly focusing on the $n$-Fuchsian fibers. More precisely, we show the energy density of associated harmonic map of an $n$-Fuchsian representation dominates the ones of all other representations in the same Hitchin fiber, which implies the domination of topological invariants: translation length spectrum and entropy. As applications of the energy density domination results, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of equivariant minimal (or maximal) surfaces in certain product Riemannian (or pseudo-Riemannian) manifold. …
Let Gamma < PSL_2(C) be discrete, cofinite volume, and noncocompact. We prove that for all K > 1, there is a subgroup H < Gamma that is K-quasiconformally conjugate to a discrete cocompact subgroup of PSL_2(R). Along with previous work of Kahn and Markovic, this proves that every finite covolume Kleinian group has a nearly Fuchsian surface subgroup.
Almost-Fuchsian manifold is a class of complete hyperbolic three manifolds. Such a three-manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian manifold which contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures everywhere in the range of (-1, 1). In such a manifold, the minimal surface is unique and embedded, hence one can parametrize these hyperbolic three-manifolds by their minimal surfaces. In this paper we obtain estimates on several geometric and analytical quantities of an almost-Fuchsian manifold M in terms of the data on the minimal surface. In particular, we obtain an upper bound for the…
We study the Liouville action for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. In particular, when the group is Fuchsian, the contribution of elliptic elements to the classical Liouville action is derived in terms of the Bloch-Wigner functions. We prove the first and second variation formulas for the classical Liouville action on the quasi-Fuchsian deformation space. We prove an equality expressing the holography principle, which relates the Liouville action and the renormalized volume for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. We also construct the potentia…
An almost Fuchsian manifold is a quasi-Fuchsian hyperbolic three-manifold that contains a closed incompressible minimal surface with principal curvatures everywhere in the range of (-1,1). In such a hyperbolic three-manifold, the minimal surface is unique and embedded, hence one can parametrize these three-manifolds by their minimal surfaces. We prove that any closed surface which is a graph over any fixed surface of small principal curvatures can be deformed into the minimal surface via the mean curvature flow. We also obtain an upper bound for the hyperbolic volume of the convex core of M, a…
This paper proves that every finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M contains a ubiquitous collection of closed, immersed, quasi-Fuchsian surfaces. These surfaces are ubiquitous in the sense that their preimages in the universal cover separate any pair of disjoint, non-asymptotic geodesic planes. The proof relies in a crucial way on the corresponding theorem of Kahn and Markovic for closed 3-manifolds. As a corollary of this result and a companion statement about surfaces with cusps, we recover Wise's theorem that the fundamental group of M acts freely and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex.
Let $Γ$ be a lattice in a connected semisimple Lie group $G$ with trivial center and no compact factors. We introduce a volume invariant for representations of $Γ$ into $G$, which generalizes the volume invariant for representations of uniform lattices introduced by Goldman. Then, we show that the maximality of this volume invariant exactly characterizes discrete, faithful representations of $Γ$ into $G$ except for $Γ\subset \mathrm{PSL_2 \mathbb{C}}$ a nonuniform lattice.
In this paper we combine our recent work on regular globally hyperbolic maximal anti-de Sitter structures with the classical theory of globally hyperbolic maximal Cauchy-compact anti-de Sitter manifolds in order to define an augmented moduli space. Moreover, we introduce a coordinate system in this space that resembles the complex Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates for hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian manifolds.
In this paper, it is shown that a Fuchsian group, acting on the upper half-plane model for $\mathbb{H}^2$, admits a Ford domain which is also a Dirichlet domain, for some center, if and only if it is an index 2 subgroup of a reflection group. This is used to exhibit an example of a maximal arithmetic hyperbolic reflection group which is not congruence. Analogous results, and counterexamples, are given in the case of Kleinian groups.
We introduce a coarse combinatorial description of the Weil-Petersson distance d_WP(X,Y) between two finite area hyperbolic Riemann surfaces X and Y. The combinatorics reveal a connection between Riemann surfaces and hyperbolic 3-manifolds conjectured by Thurston: the volume of the convex core of the quasi-Fuchsian manifold Q(X,Y) with X and Y in its boundary is comparable to the Weil-Petersson distance d_WP(X,Y). Applications include a connection of the Weil-Petersson distance with the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set and the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian as well as a new finiteness …
Up to a finite cover, closed anti-de Sitter $3$-manifolds are quotients of $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,1)$ by a discrete subgroup of $\mathrm{SO}_0(2,1) \times \mathrm{SO}_0(2,1)$ of the form \[j\times ρ(Γ)~,\] where $Γ$ is the fundamental group of a closed oriented surface, $j$ a Fuchsian representation and $ρ$ another representation which is "strictly dominated" by $j$. Here we prove that the volume of such a quotient is proportional to the sum of the Euler classes of $j$ and $ρ$. As a consequence, we obtain that this volume is constant under deformation of the anti-de Sitter structure. Our results ext…
A hyperbolic semi-ideal polyedron is a polyedron whose vertices lie inside the hyperbolic space $\mathbf{H}^{3}$ or at infinity. A hyperideal polyedron is, in the projective model, the intersection of $\mathbf{H}^{3}$ with a projective polyhedron whose vertices all lie outside of $\mathbf{H}^{3}$, and whose edges all meet $\mathbf{H}^{3}$. We classify semi-ideal polyhedra in terms of their dual metric, using the results of Rivin and Hodgson in \cite{comp} et \cite{idea}. This result is used to obtain the classification of hyperideal polyhedra in terms of their combinatorial type and their dihe…
We compute the Cheeger constants of a collection of hyperbolic surfaces corresponding to maximal non-compact arithmetic Fuchsian groups, and to subgroups which are the rotation subgroup of maximal reflection groups. The Cheeger constants are geometric quantities, but relate to the smallest eigenvalues of Maass cusp forms. From geometrical considerations, we find evidence for the existence of small eigenvalues. We search for these small eigenvalues and compute the corresponding Maass cusp forms numerically.
We classify the complete hyperbolic 3-manifolds admitting a maximal cusp of volume at most 2.62. We use this to show that the figure-8 knot complement is the unique 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold with nine or more non-hyperbolic fillings; to show that the figure-8 knot complement and its sister are the unique hyperbolic 3-manifolds with minimal volume maximal cusps; and to extend results on determining low volume closed and cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
In this paper, we study the geometric and dynamical properties of maximal representations of surface groups into Hermitian Lie groups of rank 2. Combining tools from Higgs bundle theory, the theory of Anosov representations, and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, we obtain various results of interest. We prove that these representations are holonomies of certain geometric structures, recovering results of Guichard and Wienhard. We also prove that their length spectrum is uniformly bigger than that of a suitably chosen Fuchsian representation, extending a previous work of the second author. Finally, w…
For families of knots and links given in Conway notation we compute lower maximal and upper minimal bound of hyperbolic volume by using source links and augmented links.
Given a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$ and a Morse-Smale function, there are finitely many $n$-part broken trajectories of the negative gradient flow. We show that if the manifold admits a hyperbolic metric, then the number of $n$-part broken trajectories is always at least the hyperbolic volume. The proof combines known theorems in Morse theory with lemmas of Gromov about simplicial volumes of stratified spaces.
The ratio of volume to crossing number of a hyperbolic knot is known to be bounded above by the volume of a regular ideal octahedron, and a similar bound is conjectured for the knot determinant per crossing. We investigate a natural question motivated by these bounds: For which knots are these ratios nearly maximal? We show that many families of alternating knots and links simultaneously maximize both ratios.
A three-dimensional orthoscheme is defined as a tetrahedron whose base is a right-angled triangle and an edge joining the apex and a non-right-angled vertex is perpendicular to the base. A generalization, called complete orthoschemes, of orthoschemes is known in hyperbolic geometry. Roughly speaking, complete orthoschemes consist of three kinds of polyhedra; either compact, ideal or truncated. We consider a particular family of hyperbolic complete orthoschemes, which share the same base. They are parametrized by the "height", which represents how far the apex is from the base. We prove that th…
We discuss here a generalization of a theorem by Dunfield stating that the peripheral holonomy map, from the character variety of a 3-manifold to the A-polynomial is birational. Dunfield's proof involves the rigidity of maximal volume. The volume is still an important ingredient in this paper. Unfortunately at this point no complete proof is done. Instead, a conjecture is stated about the volume function on the character variety that would imply the generalized birationality result.
We study the volume of maximal globally hyperbolic Anti-de Sitter manifolds containing a closed orientable Cauchy surface $S$, in relation to some geometric invariants depending only on the two points in Teichmüller space of $S$ provided by Mess' parameterization - namely on two isotopy classes of hyperbolic metrics $h$ and $h'$ on $S$. The main result of the paper is that the volume coarsely behaves like the minima of the $L^1$-energy of maps from $(S,h)$ to $(S,h')$. The study of $L^p$-type energies had been suggested by Thurston, in contrast with the well-studied Lipschitz distance. A corol…
Let $(M, \dr M)$ be a 3-manifold with incompressible boundary that admits a convex co-compact hyperbolic metric. We consider the hyperbolic metrics on $M$ such that $\dr M$ looks locally like a hyperideal polyhedron, and we characterize the possible dihedral angles. We find as special cases the results of Bao and Bonahon on hyperideal polyhedra, and those of Rousset on fuchsian hyperideal polyhedra. Our results can also be stated in terms of circle configurations on $\dr M$, they provide an extension of the Koebe theorem on circle packings. The proof uses some elementary properties of the hype…
We consider hyperbolic 3-manifolds with either non-empty compact geodesic boundary, or some toric cusps, or both. For any such M we analyze what portion of the volume of M can be recovered by inserting in M boundary collars and cusp neighbourhoods with disjoint embedded interiors. Our main result is that this portion can only be maximal in some combinatorially extremal configurations. The techniques we employ are VERY elementary but the result is in our opinion of some interest.
We bound two global invariants of cusped hyperbolic manifolds: the length of the shortest closed geodesic (the systole), and the radius of the biggest embedded ball (the inradius). We give an upper bound for the systole, expressed in terms of the dimension and simplicial volume. We find a positive lower bound on the inradius independent of the dimension. These bounds are sharp in dimension 3, realized by the Gieseking manifold. It provides a new characterization of this manifold.
We prove that every non-positively curved locally symmetric manifold M of finite volume contains a compact set K such that no periodic maximal flat can be homotoped out of K.
We investigate the maximal solid tubes around short simple geodesics in hyperbolic three-manifolds and how complex length of curves relate to closed, incompressible, least area minimal surfaces. As applications, we prove, there are some closed hyperbolic three-manifolds fibering over the circle which are not foliated by closed incompressible minimal surfaces diffeomorphic to the fiber. We also show, the existence of quasi-Fuchsian manifolds containing arbitrarily many embedded closed incompressible minimal surfaces. Our strategy is to prove main theorems under natural geometric conditions on t…
We prove a sharp inequality between the Blaschke and Hilbert distance on a proper convex domain: for any two points $x$ and $y$, \[d^B(x,y) < d^H(x,y) +1.\] We obtain two interesting consequences: the first one is the volume entropy rigidity for Hilbert geometries : for any proper convex domain of $\mathbb{R}\mathbf{P}^n$, the volume of a ball of radius $R$ grows at most like $e^{(n-1)R}$. The second consequence is the following fact: for any Hitchin representation of a surface group into $\mathrm{PSL}(3,\mathbb{R})$, there exists a Fuchsian representation $j$ in $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ s…
In this paper an explicit formula for a lower bound on the volume of a hyperbolic orbifold, dependent on dimension and the maximal order of torsion in the orbifolds' fundamental group, is constructed.
We use minimal (or CMC) surfaces to describe 3-dimensional hyperbolic, anti-de Sitter, de Sitter or Minkowski manifolds. We consider whether these manifolds admit ``nice'' foliations and explicit metrics, and whether the space of these metrics has a simple description in terms of Teichmüller theory. In the hyperbolic settings both questions have positive answers for a certain subset of the quasi-Fuchsian manifolds: those containing a closed surface with principal curvatures at most 1. We show that this subset is parameterized by an open domain of the cotangent bundle of Teichmüller space. Thes…
