In this article we we continue the study of property $N_p$ of irrational ruled surfaces begun in \cite{ES}. Let $X$ be a ruled surface over a curve of genus $g \geq 1$ with a minimal section $C_0$ and the numerical invariant $e$.
When $X$ is an elliptic ruled surface with $e = -1$, there is an elliptic curve $E \subset X$ such that $E \equiv 2C_0 -f$. And we prove that if $L \in {Pic}X$ is in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$ and satisfies property $N_p$, then $(C,L|_{C_0})$ and $(E,L|_E)$ satisfy property $N_p$ and hence $a+b \geq 3+p$ and $a+2b \geq 3+p$. This gives a proof of the relevant part of Gallego-Purnaprajna' conjecture in \cite{GP2}.
When $g \geq 2$ and $e \geq 0$ we prove some effective results about property $N_p$. Let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a line bundle in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$. Our main result is about the relation between higher syzygies of $(X,L)$ and those of $(C,L_{C})$ where $L_C$ is the restriction of $L$ to $C_0$. In particular, we show the followings: $(1)$ If $e \geq g-2$ and $b-ae \geq 3g-2$, then $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+1+p$. $(2)$ When $C$ is a hyperelliptic curve of genus $g \geq 2$, $L$ is normally generated if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+1$ and normally presented if and only if $b-ae \geq 2g+2$. Also if $e \geq g-2$, then $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if and only if $a \geq 1$ and $b-ae \geq 2g+1+p$.
We study higher syzygies of a ruled surface $X$ over a curve of genus $g$ with the numerical invariant $e$. Let $L \in {Pic}X$ be a line bundle in the numerical class of $aC_0 +bf$. We prove that for $0 \leq e \leq g-3$, $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if $a \geq p+2$ and $b-ae \geq 3g-1-e+p$ and for $e \geq g-2$, $L$ satisfies property $N_p$ if $a \geq p+2$ and $b-ae\geq 2g+1+p$. By using these facts, we obtain Mukai type results. For ample line bundles $A_i$, we show that $K_X + A_1 + ... + A_q$ satisfies property $N_p$ when $0 \leq e < \frac{g-3}{2}$ and $q \geq g-2e+1 +p$ or when $e \geq \fra…
For a vector bundle $\mathcal{E}$ of rank $n+1$ over a smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $g$, let $X=¶_C (\mathcal{E})$ with projection map $π:X\to C$. In this paper we investigate the minimal free resolution of homogeneous coordinate rings of $X$. We first clarify the relations between higher syzygies of very ample line bundles on $X$ and higher syzygies of Veronese embedding of fibres of $π$ by the same line bundle. More precisely, letting $H = \mathcal{O}_{¶_C (\mathcal{E})} (1)$ be the tautological line bundle, we prove that if $(¶^n,\mathcal{O}_{¶^n} (a))$ satisfies Property $N_p$, the…
Let L be a normally generated line bundle on X; we say L satisfies property N_p (notation after Mark Green) if the matrices in the free resolution of R (the homogeneous coordinate ring of X) over S (the homogeneous coordinate ring of the projective space corresponding to the complete linear series |L|) have linear entries until the p-th stage. In this article we prove the following result: Let X be an elliptic ruled surface and let L be a product of p+1 base point free and ample line bundles on X. Then L satisfies property N_p. In particular we prove that numerical classes of all divisors whic…
We characterize property $(N_p)$ on a polarized surface $(X,L)$ with trivial canonical bundle in terms of the (non)existence of certain forbidden subvarieties of $X$.
Based on the theory of an infinitesimal Newton-Okounkov body, we extend the results of Lazarsfeld-Pareschi-Popa on abelian surfaces. Moreover, we show that the higher syzygies of $(X,L)$ are completely determined by its Seshadri constant when $L^{2}$ is large. As an application, we improve the existing lower bound of $(L^{2})$ for higher syzygies of a polarized abelian surface $(X,L)$.
Building on the theory of infinitesimal Newton--Okounkov bodies and previous work of Lazarsfeld--Pareschi--Popa, we present a Reider-type theorem for higher syzygies of ample line bundles on abelian surfaces. As an application of our methods we confirm a conjecture of Gross and Popescu on abelian surfaces with a very ample primitive polarization of type $(1,d)$, whenever $d\geq 23$.
In this paper, we show that a general polarized abelian variety $(X,L)$ of type $(1,\dots,1,d)$ and dimension $g$ satisfies property $(N_p)$ if $ d \geq \sum_{i=0}^{g} (p+2)^i$. In particular, the case $p=0$ affirmatively solves a conjecture by L. Fuentes Garc\'ıa on projective normality.
The main goal of this paper is to give a general method to compute (via computer algebra systems) an explicit set of generators of the ideals of the projective embeddings of some ruled surfaces, namely projective line bundles over curves such that the fibres are embedded as smooth rational curves. Indeed, although the existence of the embeddings that we consider is well known, often in literature there are no explicit descriptions of the corresponding projective ideals. Such an explicit description allows to compute, besides all the syzygies, some of the important algebraic invariants of the s…
We describe the spaces of minimal rank last syzygies for the Mukai Varieties of sectional genus 6,7 and 8. Based on this we show: 1. The first geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 6 form a non degenerate configuration of 5 lines in P^4. 2. The first geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 7 form a non degenerate, linearly normal, ruled surface of degree 84 on a spinor variety S in P^15. 3. The second geometric syzygies of a general canonical curve of genus 8 form a non degenerate configuration of 14 conics on a 2-uple embedded P^5 in P^20. This proves a nat…
For a polarized abelian variety, Z. Jiang and G. Pareschi introduce an invariant and show that the polarization is basepoint free or projectively normal if the invariant is small. Their result is generalized to higher syzygies by F. Caucci, that is, the polarization satisfies property $(N_p)$ if the invariant is small. In this paper, we study a relation between the invariant and degrees of abelian subvarieties with respect to the polarization. For abelian threefolds, we give an upper bound of the invariant using degrees of abelian subvarieties. In particular, we affirmatively answer some quest…
We prove new results on projective normality, normal presentation and higher syzygies for a surface of general type $X$ embedded by adjoint line bundles $L_r = K + rB$, where $B$ is a base point free, ample line bundle. Our main results determine the $r$ for which $L_r$ has $N_p$ property. In corollaries, we will relate the bounds on $r$ to the regularity of $B$. Examples in the last section show that several results are optimal.
We show that vanishing of asymptotic p-th syzygies implies p-very ampleness for line bundles on arbitrary projective schemes. For smooth surfaces we prove that the converse holds when p is small, by studying the Bridgeland-King-Reid-Haiman correspondence for tautological bundles on the Hilbert scheme of points. This extends previous results of Ein-Lazarsfeld, Ein-Lazarsfeld-Yang and gives a partial answer to some of their questions. As an application of our results, we show how to use syzygies to bound the irrationality of a variety.
In the present paper, we consider upper bounds of higher linear syzygies i.e. graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of the minimal free resolutions of projective varieties in arbitrary characteristic. For this purpose, we first remind `Partial Elimination Ideals (PEIs)' theory and introduce a new framework in which one can study the syzygies of embedded projective schemes well using PEIs theory and the reduction method via inner projections. Next we establish fundamental inequalities which govern the relations between the graded Betti numbers in the first linear strand of an algebrai…
The goal of this article is to study the equations and syzygies of embeddings of rational surfaces and certain Fano varieties. Given a rational surface X and an ample and base-point-free line bundle L on X, we give an optimal numerical criterion for L to satisfy property Np. This criterion turns out to be a characterization of property Np if X is anticanonical. We also prove syzygy results for adjunction bundles and a Reider type theorem for higher syzygies. For certain Fano varieties we also prove results on very ampleness and higher syzygies.
This work consists of two parts. In the first part we develop new techniques to compute Koszul cohomology groups for several classes of varieties. As applications we prove results on projective normality and syzygies for algebraic surfaces. From more general results we obtain in particular the following: a) Mukai's conjecture (and stronger variants of it) regarding projective normality and normal presentation for surfaces with Kodaira dimension 0, and uniform bounds for higher syzygies associated to adjoint linear series, b) effective bounds along the lines of Mukai's conjecture regarding proj…
The goal of this note is to quantitatively study the behavior of asymptotic syzygies for certain toric surfaces, including Hirzebruch surfaces. In particular, we show that the asymptotic linear syzygies of Hirzebruch surfaces embedded by $\mathcal{O}(d,2)$ conform to Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld's normality heuristic. We also show that the higher degree asymptotic syzygies are not asymptotically normally distributed.
Let $X \subset ¶^r$ be a nondegenerate projective variety and let $ν_{\ell} : ¶^r \to ¶^N$ be the $\ell$-th Veronese embedding. In this paper we study the higher normality, defining equations and syzygies among them for the projective embedding $ν_{\ell} (X) \subset ¶^N$. We obtain that for a very ample line bundle $L \in {Pic}X$ such that $X \subset ¶H^0 (X,L)$ is $m$-regular in the sense of Castelnuovo-Mumford, $(X,L^{\ell})$ satisfies property $N_{\ell}$ for all $\ell \geq m$ (Theorem \ref{thm:main1}). This is a generalization of M. Green's work that $(¶^r,\mathcal{O}_{¶^r} (\ell))$ satisfi…
In this article we prove some strong vanishing theorems on K3 surfaces. As an aplication of them, we obtain higher syzygy results for K3 surfaces and Fano varieties.
The present paper is related to a conjecture made by Green and Lazarsfeld concerning 1-linear syzygies of curves embedded by complete linear systems of sufficiently large degrees. Given a smooth, irreducible, complex, projective curve $X$, we prove that the least integer $q$ for which the property $(M_q)$ fails for a line bundle $L$ on $X$ does not depend on $L$ as soon as its degree becomes sufficiently large. Consequently, this number is an invariant of the curve, and the statement of Green-Lazarsfeld's conjecture is equivalent to saying that this invariant equals the gonality of the curve. …
We study curves consisting of unions of projective lines whose intersections are given by graphs. Under suitable hypotheses on the graph, these so-called \emph{graph curves} can be embedded in projective space as line arrangements. We discuss property $N_p$ for these embeddings and are able to produce products of linear forms that generate the ideal in certain cases. We also briefly discuss questions regarding the higher-dimensional subspace arrangements obtained by taking the secant varieties of graph curves.
In the 1980's, work of Green and Lazarsfeld helped to uncover the beautiful interplay between the geometry of the embedding of a curve and the syzygies of its defining equations. Similar results hold for the first secant variety of a curve, and there is a natural conjectural picture extending to higher secant varieties as well. We present an introduction to the algebra and geometry used in previous work of the authors to study syzygies of secant varieties of curves with an emphasis on examples of explicit computations and elementary cases that illustrate the geometric principles at work.
In this paper we study the geometry of the Severi varieties parametrizing curves on the rational ruled surface $\fn$. We compute the number of such curves through the appropriate number of fixed general points on $\fn$, and the number of such curves which are irreducible. These numbers are known as Severi degrees; they are the degrees of unions of components of the Hilbert scheme. As (i) $\fn$ can be deformed to $\eff_{n+2}$, (ii) the Gromov-Witten invariants are deformation-invariant, and (iii) the Gromov-Witten invariants of $\eff_0$ and $\eff_1$ are enumerative, Theorem \ref{irecursion} com…
Let $d_1,...,d_r$ be positive integers and let $I = (F_1,...,F_r)$ be an ideal generated by general forms of degrees $d_1,...,d_r$, respectively, in a polynomial ring $R$ with $n$ variables. When all the degrees are the same we give a result that says, roughly, that they have as few first syzygies as possible. In the general case, the Hilbert function of $R/I$ has been conjectured by Fröberg. In a previous work the authors showed that in many situations the minimal free resolution of $R/I$ must have redundant terms which are not forced by Koszul (first or higher) syzygies among the $F_i$ (and …
We study Le Potier's strange duality conjecture on a rational surface. We focus on the strange duality map $SD_{c_n^r,L}$ which involves the moduli space of rank $r$ sheaves with trivial first Chern class and second Chern class $n$, and the moduli space of 1-dimensional sheaves with determinant $L$ and Euler characteristic 0. We show there is an exact sequence relating the map $SD_{c_r^r,L}$ to $SD_{c^{r-1}_{r},L}$ and $SD_{c_r^r,L\otimes K_X}$ for all $r\geq1$ under some conditions on $X$ and $L$ which applies to a large number of cases on $\p^2$ or Hirzebruch surfaces . Also on $\mathbb{P}^2…
Error correcting codes are defined and important parameters for a code are explained. Parameters of new codes constructed on algebraic surfaces are studied. In particular, codes resulting from blowing up points in $\proj^2$ are briefly studied, then codes resulting from ruled surfaces are covered. Codes resulting from ruled surfaces over curves of genus 0 are completely analyzed, and some codes are discovered that are better than direct product Reed Solomon codes of similar length. Ruled surfaces over genus 1 curves are also studied, but not all classes are completely analyzed. However, in thi…
