This paper is third in a series of three, following "Summation Formulas, from Poisson and Voronoi to the Present" (math.NT/0304187) and "Distributions and Analytic Continuation of Dirichlet Series" (math.FA/0403030). The first is primarily an expository paper explaining the present one, whereas the second contains some distributional machinery used here as well. These papers concern the boundary distributions of automorphic forms, and how they can be applied to study questions about cusp forms on semisimple Lie groups. The main result of this paper is a Voronoi-style summation formula for the Fourier coefficients of a cusp form on GL(3,Z)\GL(3,R). We also give a treatment of the standard L-function on GL(3), focusing on the archimedean analysis as performed using distributions. Finally a new proof is given of the GL(3)xGL(1) converse theorem of Jacquet, Piatetski-Shapiro, and Shalika. This paper is also related to the later papers math.NT/0402382 and math.NT/0404521.
We give an overview of classical summation formulations, such as Poisson's and Voronoi's, and then turn to modern versions involving modular form coefficients. A new formula involving the coefficients of cusp forms on GL(3) is described, and its proof sketched, followed by applications to L-functions. The main method used is the boundary value distribution of automorphic forms.
A general Voronoï summation formula for the (metaplectic) double cover of $\text{GL}_2$ is derived via the representation theoretic framework à la Ichino--Templier. The identity is also formulated classically and used to establish Voronoï summation formulae for half-integral weight modular forms and Maaß forms.
In an earlier paper we derived an analogue of the classical Voronoi summation formula for automorphic forms on GL(3), by using the theory of automorphic distributions. The purpose of the present paper is to apply this theory to derive the analogous formulas for GL(n).
We discover new Voronoi formulae for automorphic forms on GL($n$) for $n\geq 4$. There are $[n/2]$ different Voronoi formulae on GL($n$), which are Poisson summation formulae weighted by Fourier coefficients of the automorphic form with twists by some hyper-Kloosterman sums.
S.D. Miller and F. Zhou have proved a balanced Voronoi summation formula for GL$_N$ over $\mathbb Q$, which allows one to control the dimensions of the Kloosterman sums appearing on either side of the Voronoi formula. In this note, we prove a balanced Voronoi formula over an arbitrary number field, starting with the Voronoi summation formula of A. Ichino and N. Templier over number fields, allowing one to extend recent results on spectral reciprocity laws to number fields, in special cases.
In this paper we establish a very flexible and explicit Voronoi summation formula. This is then used to prove an almost Weyl strength subconvexity result for automorphic $L$-functions of degree two in the depth aspect. That is, looking at twists by characters of prime power conductor. This is the natural $p$-adic analogue to the well studied $t$-aspect.
Firstly we prove that the Voronoi formula of Miller-Schmid type applies to automorphic forms on GL(3) for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, when the conductor of the additive character in the formula is a multiple of $N$. As an application, we produce a result about the functional equation of $L$-function of the automorphic form on GL(3) twisted by Dirichlet characters. Secondly we prove that a similar formula applies to automorphic forms on GL(3) for the congruence subgroup $Γ_0(N)$, when the conductor of the additive character in the formula is coprime with $N$.
We investigate the Voronoi summation problem for ${\rm GL}_n$ in the level aspect for $n\geq 2$. Of particular interest are those primes at which the level and modulus are jointly ramified - a common occurrence in analytic number theory when using techniques such as the Petersson trace formula. Building on previous legacies, our formula stands as the most general of its kind; in particular we extend the results of Ichino-Templier. We also give (classical) refinements of our formula and study the $p$-adic generalisations of the Hankel transform.
We investigate the relations for $L$-functions satisfying certain functional equation, summationa formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type and Maass forms of integral and half-integral weight. Summation formulas of Voronoi-Ferrar type can be viewed as an automorphic property of distribution vectors of non-unitary principal series representations of the double covering group of $SL(2)$. Our goal is converse theorems for automorphic distributions and Maass forms of level $N$ characterizing them by analytic properties of the associated $L$-functions. As an application of our converse theorems, we construc…
We calculate mean values of $\operatorname{GL}_n$-automorphic $L$-functions twisted by primitive even Dirichlet characters of prime-power conductor, at arbitrary points within the critical strip, by derivation of special Voronoi summation formulae. Our calculation is novel in that the twisted sum can be expressed in terms of the average itself, and also that it sees the derivation of various new summation formulae in the setting of prime-power modulus. One consequence, as we explain, is to show the analytic continuation and additive summation formulae for hyper-Kloosterman Dirichlet series ass…
In this article we study the Poisson summation for Hankel transform in the sense of Braverman-Kazhdan-Ngo in the special case of $L$-embedding $ρ: GL_1\rightarrow GL_2$. We view such a summation formula as the generalization of the classical Voronoi summation formula.
In this paper we show how the GL(N) Voronoi summation formula of [MiSc2] can be rewritten to incorporate hyper-Kloosterman sums of various dimensions on both sides. This generalizes a formula for GL(4) with ordinary Kloosterman sums on both sides that was considered by Xiaoqing Li and the first-named author, and later by the second-named author in [Zho].
This article describes a general method for computing automorphic forms using Voronoi-type summation formulas. It gives a numerical example where the technique is successful in quickly finding a cusp form on GL(3,Z)\GL(3,R), albeit one whose existence was already known as a Langlands lift.
In this note, we revisit an identity that Miller and Schmid showed in their article on a general Voronoi summation formula for $GL(n,\mathbb{Z})$ in 2009. For the proof, we mainly follow Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro's ideas in their work on converse theorems for $GL(n)$.
We derive a Voronoi-type series approximation for the local weighted mean of an arithmetical function that is associated to Dirichlet series satisfying a functional equation with gamma factors. The series is exploited to study the oscillation frequency with a method of Heath-Brown and Tsang [7]. A by-product is another proof for the well-known result of no element in the Selberg class of degree 0 \textless{} d \textless{} 1. Our major applications include the sign-change problem of the coefficients of automorphic L-functions for GL m , which improves significantly some results of Liu and Wu [1…
This paper is second in a series of three papers; the first of which is "Summation Formulas, from Poisson and Voronoi to the Present" (math.NT/0304187), and the third of which is "Automorphic Distributions, L-functions, and Voronoi Summation for GL(3)". The first paper is primarily an expository paper, while the third proves a Voronoi-style summation formula for the coefficients of a cusp form on GL(3,Z)\GL(3,R). This present paper contains the distributional machinery used in the third paper for rigorously deriving the summation formula, and also for the proof of the GL(3)xGL(1) converse theo…
We outline an approach to proving functoriality of automorphic representations using trace formula. More specifically, we construct a family of integral operators on the space of automorphic forms whose eigenvalues are expressed in terms of the L-functions of automorphic representations and begin the analysis of their traces using the orbital side of the stable trace formula. We show that the most interesting part, corresponding to regular conjugacy classes, is nothing but a sum over a finite-dimensional vector space over the global field, which we call the Steinberg-Hitchin base. Therefore it…
We continue the analysis of the elliptic part of the trace formula initiated in \cite{Altug:2015aa}. In that reference Poisson summation was applied to the elliptic part and the dominant term was analyzed. The main aim of this paper is to study the remaining terms after Poisson summation. We analyze the the Fourier transforms of (smoothed) orbital integrals and obtain exact asymptotic expansions. As an application we recover, using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, Kuznetsov's result (cf. \cite{Kuznetsov:1980aa}) that the trace of the $p$th Hecke operator on cuspidal automorphic representation…
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-D})$ be an imaginary number field, $(p)=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}'$ be a split odd prime and $ψ$ be a Hecke character of conductor $\mathfrak{p}$. Let $L(s,ψ)$ be the associated $L$-function. We prove the Burgess bound in $t$-aspect and a hybrid bound in conductor aspect, \begin{equation*} L(1/2+it,ψ)\ll_{D,\varepsilon} (1+|t|)^{3/8+\varepsilon}p^{1/8} \end{equation*} for $p\ll t$. In Appendix A, we present the ideas for an elementary proof of Voronoi summation formula for holomorphic cusp forms with CM and squarefree level. This is done by exploiting the lattice struct…
We obtain several asymptotic formulas for the sum of the divisor function $τ(n)$ with $n \le x$ in an arithmetic progressions $n \equiv a \pmod q$ on average over $a$ from a set of several consecutive elements from set of reduced residues modulo $q$ and on average over arbitrary sets. The main goal is to obtain nontrivial results for $q \ge x^{2/3}$ with the small amount of averaging over $a$. We recall that for individual values of $a$ the limit of our current methods is $q \le x^{2/3-\varepsilon}$ for an arbitrary fixed $\varepsilon> 0$. Our method builds on an approach due to Blomer (2008) …
Let $F$ be a number field and let $\mathbb{A}_F$ be its ring of adeles. Let $B$ be a quaternion algebra over $F$ and let $ν:B \to F$ be the reduced norm. Consider the reductive monoid $M$ over $F$ whose points in an $F$-algebra $R$ are given by \begin{align*} M(R):=\{(γ_1,γ_2) \in (B \otimes_F R)^{2}:ν(γ_1)=ν(γ_2)\}. \end{align*} Motivated by an influential conjecture of Braverman and Kazhdan we prove a summation formula analogous to the Poisson summation formula for certain spaces of functions on the monoid. As an application, we define new zeta integrals for the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function a…
We generalize the standard Poisson summation formula for lattices so that it operates on the level of theta series, allowing us to introduce noninteger dimension parameters (using the dimensionally continued Fourier transform). When combined with one of the proofs of the Jacobi imaginary transformation of theta functions that does not use the Poisson summation formula, our proof of this generalized Poisson summation formula also provides a new proof of the standard Poisson summation formula for dimensions greater than 2 (with appropriate hypotheses on the function being summed). In general, ou…
Hardy and Littlewood's approximate functional equation for quadratic Weyl sums (theta sums) provides, by iterative application, a powerful tool for the asymptotic analysis of such sums. The classical Jacobi theta function, on the other hand, satisfies an exact functional equation, and extends to an automorphic function on the Jacobi group. In the present study we construct a related, almost everywhere non-differentiable automorphic function, which approximates quadratic Weyl sums up to an error of order one, uniformly in the summation range. This not only implies the approximate functional equ…
The thesis gave a fine study on the distribution of the coefficients of automorphic L-functions for GL(m) with m>1. In particular we have treated two types of problems: change of signs of these coefficients (when they are real) and their decompensation on the prime numbers. Chapter 2 is devoted to the results known concerning the first problem in the case of classical modular forms and to explain our motivation of research. In Chapter 3, we treated the case of primitive Maass forms and obtained an estimate of the subconvexity-type for the least integer n such that the n-th coefficient is negat…
At first a type of Eisenstein series is defined as distributions giving nearly-holomorphic automorphic forms on a totally real field, with different expressions (integral, summation) ; then these are shown to satisfied the expected properties, and the Fourier coefficients are explicitly computed. Finally, an explicit computation shows that in the simplest case, the abstract object considered simplify down to the most classical version of Eisenstein series.
We obtain asymptotics with a power saving error term for $\int_0^1|\sum_{n\le X} d(n)e(nα)|^sdα$ for $s < 2$, where $d(n) = \sum_{d | n} 1$ is the divisor function. We also obtain such asymptotics for $\int_0^1|\sum_{n\le X}λ_f(n)e(nα)|^sdα$ for all $s > 0$. Our proof an iterative method with repeated applications of Jutila's variant of the circle method and Voronoi summation.
Modifying a method of Jutila, we prove a t aspect subconvexity estimate for L-functions associated to primitive holomorphic cusp forms of arbitrary level that is of comparable strength to Good's bound for the full modular group, thus resolving a problem that has been open for 35 years. A key innovation in our proof is a general form of Voronoi summation that applies to all fractions, even when the level is not squarefree.
In his paper "Beyond Endoscopy," Langlands tries to understand functoriality via poles of L-functions. The following paper further investigates the analytic continuation of a L-function associated to a $GL_2$ automorphic form through the trace formula. Though the usual way to obtain the analytic continuation of an L-function is through its functional equation, this paper shows that by simply assuming the trace formula, the functional equation of the L-function may be recovered. This paper is a step towards understanding the analytic continuation of the L-function at the same time as capturing …
We develop a reciprocity formula for a spectral sum over central values of L-functions on GL(4)xGL(2). As an application we show that for any self-dual cusp form Pi for SL(4,Z), there exists a Maass form pi for SL(2,Z) such that L(1/2, Pi x pi) is nonvanishing. An important ingredient is a "balanced" Voronoi summation formula involving Kloosterman sums on both sides, which can also be thought of as the functional equation of a certain double Dirichlet series involving Kloosterman sums and GL(4) Hecke eigenvalues.
In this paper, over imaginary quadratic fields, we consider the family of $L$-functions $L (s, f)$ for an orthonormal basis of spherical Hecke--Maass forms $f$ with Archimedean parameter $t_f$. We establish asymptotic formulae for the twisted first and second moments of the central values $L\big(\frac 1 2, f\big)$, which can be applied to prove that at least $33 \%$ of $L\big(\frac 1 2, f\big)$ with $t_f \leqslant T$ are non-vanishing as $T \rightarrow \infty$. Our main tools are the spherical Kuznetsov trace formula and the Voronoï summation formula over imaginary quadratic fields.
Let $r_k(n)$ denote the number of representations of the positive integer $n$ as the sum of $k$ squares. We rigorously prove for the first time a Voronoi summation formula for $r_k(n), k\geq2,$ proved incorrectly by A. I. Popov and later rediscovered by A. P. Guinand, but without proof and without conditions on the functions associated in the transformation. Using this summation formula we establish a new transformation between a series consisting of $r_k(n)$ and a product of two Bessel functions, and a series involving $r_k(n)$ and the Gaussian hypergeometric function. This transformation can…
Let $f$ be a full-level cusp form for $GL_m(\mathbb Z)$ with Fourier coefficients $A_f(n_1,...,n_{m-1})$. In this paper an asymptotic expansion of Voronoi's summation formula for $f$ is established. As applications of this formula, a smoothly weighted average of $A_f(n,1,...,1)$ against $e(α|n|^β)$ is proved to be rapidly decayed when $0<β<1/m$. When $β=1/m$ and $α$ equals or approaches $\pm mq^{1/m}$ for a positive integer $q$, this smooth average has a main term of the size of $|A_f(1,...,1,q)+A_f(1,...,1,-q)|X^{1/(2m)+1/2}$, which is a manifestation of resonance of oscillation exhibited by …
For a fixed cusp form $π$ on $\operatorname{GL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$ and a varying Dirichlet character $χ$ of prime conductor $q$, we prove that the subconvex bound \[ L(π\otimes χ, \tfrac{1}{2}) \ll q^{3/4 - δ} \] holds for any $δ< 1/36$. This improves upon the earlier bounds $δ< 1/1612$ and $δ< 1/308$ obtained by Munshi using his $\operatorname{GL}_2$ variant of the $δ$-method. The method developed here is more direct. We first express $χ$ as the degenerate zero-frequency contribution of a carefully chosen summation formula à la Poisson. After an elementary "amplification" step exploiting the mult…
We focus on three pages in Ramanujan's lost notebook, pages 336, 335, and 332, in decreasing order of attention. On page 336, Ramanujan proposes two identities, but the formulas are wrong -- each is vitiated by divergent series. We concentrate on only one of the two incorrect "identities", which may have been devised to attack the extended divisor problem. We prove here a corrected version of Ramanujan's claim, which contains the convergent series appearing in it. The convergent series in Ramanujan's faulty claim is similar to one used by G.F. Voronoi, G.H. Hardy, and others in their study of …
