In this note, we study the non-linear evolution problem $dY_t = -A Y_t dt + B(Y_t) dX_t$, where $X$ is a $γ$-Hölder continuous function of the time parameter, with values in a distribution space, and $-A$ the generator of an analytical semigroup. Then, we will give some sharp conditions on $X$ in order to solve the above equation in a function space, first in the linear case (for any value of $γ$ in $(0,1)$), and then when $B$ satisfies some Lipschitz type conditions (for $γ>1/2$). The solution of the evolution problem will be understood in the mild sense, and the integrals involved in that definition will be of Young type.
We study stochastic integrals driven by a general subordinator and establish a zero-one law for the finiteness of the resulting integral as well as moment estimates. As an application, we use these results to obtain structural properties of SPDEs driven by multiplicative pure jump noise, which include (1) a maximal inequality for a multiplicative stochastic convolution $Z_t$, (2) a small ball probability of $Z_t$, (3) the existence of invariant measures and accessibility to zero of SPDEs, and (4) a Galerkin approximation of solutions to SPDEs.
In this paper, we study the existence of random periodic solutions for semilinear SPDEs on a bounded domain with a smooth boundary. We identify them as the solutions of coupled forward-backward infinite horizon stochastic integral equations on $L^2(D)$ in general cases. For this we use Mercer's Theorem and eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the second order differential operators in the infinite horizon integral equations. We then use the argument of the relative compactness of Wiener-Sobolev spaces in $C^0([0, T], L^2(Ω\times D))$ and generalized Schauder's fixed point theorem to prove the exi…
We present the Walsh theory of stochastic integrals with respect to martingale measures, alongside of the Da Prato and Zabczyk theory of stochastic integrals with respect to Hilbert-space-valued Wiener processes and some other approaches to stochastic integration, and we explore the links between these theories. We then show how each theory can be used to study stochastic partial differential equations, with an emphasis on the stochastic heat and wave equations driven by spatially homogeneous Gaussian noise that is white in time. We compare the solutions produced by the different theories.
We consider the Wiener integral with respect to a $d$-parameter Hermite process with Hurst multi-index ${\bf H}= (H_{1},\ldots, H_{d}) \in \left( \frac{1}{2}, 1\right) ^{d}$ and we analyze the limit behavior in distribution of this object when the components of ${\bf H}$ tend to $1$ and/or $\frac{1}{2}$. As examples, we focus on the solution to the stochastic heat equation with additive Hermite noise and to the Hermite Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process.
In this article we introduce a stochastic counterpart of the Hörmander condtion on the kernel $K(r,t,x,y)$: there exists a pseudo-metric $ρ$ on $(0,\infty)\times R^d$ and a positive constant $C_0$ such that for $X=(t,x), Y=(s,y), Z=(r,z) \in (0,\infty) \times R^d$, $$ \sup_{X,Y}\int_{0}^\infty \left[ \int_{ρ(X,Z) \geq C_0 ρ(X,Y)} | K(r,t, z,x) - K(r,s, z,y)| ~dz\right]^2 dr <\infty. $$ We prove that the stochastic singular integral of the type $$ \mathbb{T} g(t,x) :=\int_0^{t} \int_{R^d} K(t,s,x,y) g(s,y)dy dW_s $$ is a bounded operator on $\mathbb{L}_p=L_p(Ω\times (0,\infty); L_{p}(R^d))$ for…
We study the nonlinear stochastic heat equation driven by space-time white noise in the case that the initial datum $u_0$ is a (possibly signed) measure. In this case, one cannot obtain a mild random-field solution in the usual sense. We prove instead that it is possible to establish the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution with values in a suitable function space. Our approach is based on a construction of a generalized definition of a stochastic convolution via Young-type inequalities.
In this paper, we study the existence of random periodic solutions for semilinear stochastic partial differential equations with multiplicative linear noise on a bounded open domain ${\cal O}\subset {\mathbb R}^d$ with smooth boundary. We identify them with the solutions of coupled forward-backward infinite horizon stochastic integral equations in $L^2({\cal O})$. We then use generalized Schauder's fixed point theorem, the relative compactness of Wiener-Sobolev spaces in $C^0([0, T], L^2(Ω\times{\cal O}))$ and a localization argument to prove the existence of solutions of the infinite horizon …
In order to approximate solutions of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) that do not possess commutative noise, one has to simulate the involved iterated stochastic integrals. Recently, two approximation methods for iterated stochastic integrals in infinite dimensions were introduced in C. Leonhard and A. Rößler: Iterated stochastic integrals in infinite dimensions: approximation and error estimates, Stoch. Partial Differ. Equ. Anal. Comput., 7(2): 209-239 (2019). As a result of this, it is now possible to apply the Milstein scheme by Jentzen and Röckner: A Milstein scheme for SP…
This paper deals with the drift estimation in linear stochastic evolution equations (with emphasis on linear SPDEs) with additive fractional noise (with Hurst index ranging from 0 to 1) via least-squares procedure. Since the least-squares estimator contains stochastic integrals of divergence type, we address the problem of its pathwise (and robust to observation errors) evaluation by comparison with the pathwise integral of Stratonovich type and using its chain-rule property. The resulting pathwise LSE is then defined implicitly as a solution to a non-linear equation. We study its numerical pr…
In this article, we give a new proof of the Itô formula for some integral processes related to the space-time Lévy white noise introduced in Balan (2015) as an alternative for the Gaussian white noise perturbing an SPDE. We discuss two applications of this result, which are useful in the study of SPDEs driven by a space-time Lévy noise with finite variance: a maximal inequality for the $p$-th moment of the stochastic integral, and the Itô representation theorem leading to a chaos expansion similar to the Gaussian case.
In this paper, we are concerned with the estimates for the moments of stochastic convolution integrals. We first deal with the stochastic singular integral operators and we aim to derive the Morrey-Campanato estimates for the $p$-moments (for $p\ge1$). Then, by utilising the embedding theory between the Campanato space and Hölder space, we establish the norm of $C^{θ,θ/2}(\bar D)$, where $θ\ge0, \bar D=\bar G\times[0,T]$ for arbitrarily fixed $T\in(0,\infty)$ and $G\subset\mathbb{R}^d$. As an application, we consider the following stochastic (fractional) heat equations with additive noises \be…
Regularity estimates for an integral operator with a symmetric continuous kernel on a convex bounded domain are derived. The covariance of a mean-square continuous random field on the domain is an example of such an operator. The estimates are of the form of Hilbert--Schmidt norms of the integral operator and its square root, composed with fractional powers of an elliptic operator equipped with homogeneous boundary conditions of either Dirichlet or Neumann type. These types of estimates, which couple the regularity of the driving noise with the properties of the differential operator, have imp…
We study the sample path regularity of the solutions of a class of spde's which are second order in time and that includes the stochastic wave equation. Non-integer powers of the spatial Laplacian are allowed. The driving noise is white in time and spatially homogeneous. Continuing with the work initiated in Dalang and Mueller (2003), we prove that the solutions belong to a fractional $L^2$-Sobolev space. We also prove Hölder continuity in time and therefore, we obtain joint Hölder continuity in the time and space variables. Our conclusions rely on a precise analysis of the properties of the s…
In this article, we introduce a Lévy analogue of the spatially homogeneous Gaussian noise of Dalang (1999), and we construct a stochastic integral with respect to this noise. The spatial covariance of the noise is given by a tempered measure $μ$ on $\bR^d$, whose density is given by $|h|^2$ for a complex-valued function $h$. Without assuming that the Fourier transform of $μ$ is a non-negative function, we identify a large class of integrands with respect to this noise. As an application, we examine the linear stochastic heat and wave equations driven by this type of noise.
The solution of a parabolic stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by an infinite-dimensional Brownian motion is in general not a semi-martingale anymore and does in general not satisfy an Itô formula like the solution of a finite-dimensional stochastic ordinary differential equation (SODE). In particular, it is not possible to derive stochastic Taylor expansions as for the solution of a SODE using an iterated application of the Itô formula. Consequently, until recently, only low order numerical approximation results for such a SPDE have been available. Here, the fact that the …
An Ito-Skorokhod bi-linear equation driven by infinitely many independent colored noises is considered in a normal triple of Hilbert spaces. The special feature of the equation is the appearance of the Wick product in the definition of the Ito-Skorokhod integral, requiring innovative approaches to computing the solution. A chaos expansion of the solution is derived and several truncations of this expansion are studied. A recursive approximation of the solution is suggested and the corresponding approximation error bound is computed.
Higher order schemes for stochastic partial differential equations that do not possess commutative noise require the simulation of iterated stochastic integrals. In this work, we propose a derivative-free Milstein type scheme to approximate the mild solution of stochastic partial differential equations that need not to fulfill a commutativity condition for the noise term and which can flexibly be combined with some approximation method for the involved iterated integrals. Recently, the authors introduced two algorithms to simulate such iterated stochastic integrals; these clear the way for the…
The paper deals with some properties of set-valued functions having a bounded Riesz p-variation. Set-valued integrals of a Young type for such multifunctions are introduced. Selection results and properties of such setvalued integrals are discussed. These integrals contain as a particular case set-valued stochastic integrals with respect to a fractional Brownian motion, and therefore, their properties are crucial for the investigation of solutions to stochastic differential inclusions driven by a fractional Brownian motion.
In this paper, we extend Walsh's stochastic integral with respect to a Gaussian noise, white in time and with some homogeneous spatial correlation, in order to be able to integrate some random measure-valued processes. This extension turns out to be equivalent to Dalang's one. Then we study existence and regularity of the density of the probability law for the real-valued mild solution to a general second order stochastic partial differential equation driven by such a noise. For this, we apply the techniques of the Malliavin calculus. Our results apply to the case of the stochastic heat equati…
In this note, we establish a novel maximal inequality of the 2D Young integral $\int_a^b\int_c^d FdG$ in terms of the $(p,q)$-bivariation norms of the section functions $x\mapsto F(x,y)$ and $y\mapsto F(x,y)$ where $G:[a,b]\times [c,d]\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ is a controlled path satisfying finite $(p,q)$-variation conditions. The proof is reminiscent from the Young's original ideas \cite{young1} in defining two-parameter integrals in terms of $(p,q)$-finite bivariations. Our result complements the standard maximal inequality established by Towghi \cite{towghi1} in terms of joint variations. We…
In this paper, we first study the existence-uniqueness and large deviation estimate of solutions for stochastic Volterra integral equations with singular kernels in 2-smooth Banach spaces. Then, we apply them to a large class of semilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE) driven by Brownian motions as well as by fractional Brownian motions, and obtain the existence of unique maximal strong solutions (in the sense of SDE and PDE) under local Lipschitz conditions. Lastly, high order SPDEs in a bounded domain of Euclidean space, second order SPDEs on complete Riemannian manifolds,…
The problem of approximating the covariance operator of the mild solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation is considered. An integral equation involving the semigroup of the mild solution is derived and a general error decomposition is proven. This formula is applied to approximations of the covariance operator of a stochastic advection-diffusion equation and a stochastic wave equation, both on bounded domains. The approximations are based on finite element discretizations in space and rational approximations of the exponential function in time. Convergence rates are derive…
In this paper we study the Malliavin derivatives and Skorohod integrals for processes taking values in an infinite dimensional space. Such results are motivated by their applications to SPDEs and in particular financial mathematics. Vector-valued Malliavin theory in Banach space E is naturally restricted to spaces E which have the so-called UMD property, which arises in harmonic analysis and stochastic integration theory. We provide several new results and tools for the Malliavin derivatives and Skorohod integrals in an infinite dimensional setting. In particular, we prove weak characterizatio…
For Hölder continuous functions $W(t,x)$ and $φ_t$, we define nonlinear integral $\int_a^b W(dt, φ_t)$ via fractional calculus. This nonlinear integral arises naturally in the Feynman-Kac formula for stochastic heat equations with random coefficients. We also define iterated nonlinear integrals.
In this paper, we consider a system of $k$ second order non-linear stochastic partial differential equations with spatial dimension $d \geq 1$, driven by a $q$-dimensional Gaussian noise, which is white in time and with some spatially homogeneous covariance. The case of a single equation and a one-dimensional noise, has largely been studied in the literature. The first aim of this paper is to give a survey of some of the existing results. We will start with the existence, uniqueness and Hölder's continuity of the solution. For this, the extension of Walsh's stochastic integral to cover some me…
We present a new Aumann-like integral for a Hölder multifunction with respect to a Hölder signal, based on the Young integral of a particular set of Hölder selections. This restricted Aumann integral has continuity properties that allow for numerical approximation as well as an existence theorem for an abstract stochastic differential inclusion. This is applied to concrete examples of first order and second order stochastic differential inclusions directed by fractional Brownian motion.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the cross-variation of two-dimensional processes having the form of a Young integral with respect to a fractional Brownian motion of index $H \textgreater{} 1/ 2$. When $H$ is smaller than or equal to $3 / 4$, we show asymptotic mixed normality. When $H$ is strictly bigger than $3/4$, we obtain a limit that is expressed in terms of the difference of two independent Rosenblatt processes.
Linear filtering problem for infinite-dimensional Gaussian processes is studied, the observation process being finite-dimensional. Integral equations for the filter and for covariance of the error are derived. General results are applied to linear SPDEs driven by Gauss-Volterra process observed at finitely many points of the domain.
We establish exact, dimension-dependent, spatio-temporal, uniform and local moduli of continuity for (1) the fourth order L-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky (L-KS) SPDEs and for (2) the time-fractional stochastic partial integro-differential equations (SPIDEs), driven by space-time white noise in one-to-three dimensional space. Both classes were introduced---with Brownian-time-type kernel formulations---by Allouba in a series of articles starting in 2006, where he presented class (2) in its rigorous stochastic integral equations form. He proved existence, uniqueness, and sharp spatio-temporal Hölder regul…
We provide a unified analytic approach to study stationary states of controlled differential equations driven by rough paths, using the framework of random dynamical systems and random attractors. Part I deals with driving paths of finite $p$-variations with $1 \leq p <2$ so that the integrals are interpreted in the Young sense. Our method helps to generalize recent results \cite{GAKLBSch2010}, \cite{ducGANSch18}, \cite{duchongcong18} on the existence of the global pullback attractors for the generated random dynamical systems. We also prove sufficient conditions for the attractor to be a sing…
Complementary regularity between the integrand and integrator is a well known condition for the integral $\int_0^T f(r) \, \mathrm{d} g(r)$ to exist in the Riemann-Stieltjes sense. This condition also applies to the multi-dimensional case, in particular the 2D integral $\int_{[0, T]^2} f(s,t) \, \mathrm{d} g(s,t)$. In the paper, we give a new condition for the existence of the integral under the assumption that the integrator $g$ is a Volterra covariance function. We introduce the notion of strong Hölder bi-continuity, and show that if the integrand possess this property, the assumption on com…
Many statistical applications require establishing central limit theorems for sums, integrals, or for quadratic forms of functions of a stationary process. A particularly important case is that of Appell polynomials, since the Appell expansion rank" determines typically the type of central limit theorem satisfied by these functionals. We review and extend here to multidimensional indices a functional analysis approach to this problem proposed by Avram and Brown (1989), based on the method of cumulants and on integrability assumptions in the spectral domain; several applications are presented a…
For Hölder continuous functions $W(t,x)$ and $ϕ_t$, we define nonlinear integral $\int_a^b W(dt, ϕ_t)$ in various senses, including Itô-Skorohod and pathwise. We study their properties and relations. The stochastic flow in a time dependent rough vector field associated with $\dot ϕ_t=(\partial _tW)(t, ϕ_t)$ is also studied and its applications to the transport equation $\partial _t u(t,x)-\partial _t W(t,x)\nabla u(t,x)=0$ in rough media is given. The Feynman-Kac solution to the stochastic partial differential equation with random coefficients $\partial _t u(t,x)+Lu(t,x) +u(t,x)W(t,x)=0$ are g…
In this paper, we prove two main results. The first one is to give a new condition for the existence of two-parameter $p, q$-variation path integrals. Our condition of locally bounded $p,q$-variation is more natural and easy to verify than those of Young. This result can be easily generalized to multi-parameter case. The second result is to define the integral of local time $\int_{-\infty}^\infty\int_0^t g(s,x)d_{s,x}L_s(x)$ pathwise and then give generalized It$\hat {\rm o}$'s formula when $\nabla^-f(s,x)$ is only of bounded $p,q$-variation in $(s,x)$. In the case that $g(s,x)=\nabla^-f(s,x)$…
It is known that some matrix integrals over U(n) satisfy an sl(2,R)-algebra of Virasoro constraints. Acting with these Virasoro generators on 2-dimensional Schur function expansions leads to difference relations on the coefficients of this expansions. These difference relations, set equal to zero, are precisely the backward and forward equations for non-intersecting random walks. The transition probabilities for these random walks appear as the coefficients of an expansion of U(n)-matrix integrals (of the type above), by inserting in the integral the product of two Schur polynomials associated…
In this note we give several methods to construct nontrivial solutions to the equation $dy_{t}=σ(y_{t}) \, dx_{t}$, where $x$ is a $γ$-Hölder $R^{d}$-valued signal with $γ\in(1/2,1)$ and $σ$ is a function behaving like a power function $|ξ|^κ$, with $κ\in(0,1)$. In this situation, classical Young integration techniques allow to get existence and uniqueness results whenever $γ(κ+1)>1$, while we focus on cases where $γ(κ+1)\le 1$. Our analysis then relies on some extensions of Young's integral allowing to cover the situation at hand.
Nonlinear Young integrals have been first introduced in [Catellier,Gubinelli, SPA 2016] and provide a natural generalisation of classical Young ones, but also a versatile tool in the pathwise study of regularisation by noise phenomena. We present here a self-contained account of the theory, focusing on wellposedness results for abstract nonlinear Young differential equations, together with some new extensions; convergence of numerical schemes and nonlinear Young PDEs are also treated. Most results are presented for general (possibly infinite dimensional) Banach spaces and without using compact…
In this paper we study some stability criteria for some semilinear integral equations with a function as initial condition and with additive noise, which is a Young integral that could be a functional of fractional Brownian motion. Namely, we consider stability in the mean, asymptotic stability, stability, global stability and Mittag-Leffler stability. To do so, we use comparison results for fractional equations and an equation (in terms of Mittag-Leffler functions) whose family of solutions includes those of the underlying equation.
We prove a very general sharp inequality of the Hölder--Young--type for functions defined on infinite dimensional Gaussian spaces. We begin by considering a family of commutative products for functions which interpolates between the point--wise and Wick products; this family arises naturally in the context of stochastic differential equations, through Wong--Zakai--type approximation theorems, and plays a key role in some generalizations of the Beckner--type Poincaré inequality. We then obtain a crucial integral representation for that family of products which is employed, together with a gener…
This paper deals with stochastic integrals of form $\int_0^T f(X_u)d Y_u$ in a case where the function $f$ has discontinuities, and hence the process $f(X)$ is usually of unbounded $p$-variation for every $p\geq 1$. Consequently, integration theory introduced by Young or rough path theory introduced by Lyons cannot be applied directly. In this paper we prove the existence of such integrals in a pathwise sense provided that $X$ and $Y$ have suitably regular paths together with some minor additional assumptions. In many cases of interest, our results extend the celebrated results by Young.
Iterated integrals of paths arise frequently in the study of the Taylor's expansion for controlled differential equations. We will prove a factorial decay estimate, conjectured by M. Gubinelli, for the iterated integrals of non-geometric rough paths. We will explain, with a counter example, why the conventional approach of using the neoclassical inequality fails. Our proof involves a concavity estimate for sums over rooted trees and a non-trivial extension of T. Lyons' proof in 1994 for the factorial decay of iterated Young's integrals.
Schur process is a time-dependent analog of the Schur measure on partitions studied in math.RT/9907127. Our first result is that the correlation functions of the Schur process are determinants with a kernel that has a nice contour integral representation in terms of the parameters of the process. This general result is then applied to a particular specialization of the Schur process, namely to random 3-dimensional Young diagrams. The local geometry of a large random 3-dimensional diagram is described in terms of a determinantal point process on a 2-dimensional lattice with the incomplete beta …
