In this article, we examine the arithmetic aspect of the Kummer-surface-type CY 3-folds $\hat{T/G}$, characterized by the crepant resolution of 3-torus-orbifold $T/G$ with only isolated singularities. Up to isomorphisms, there are only two such space $\hat{T/G}$ with $|G|=3, 7$, and both $T$ carrying the structure of triple-product structure of a CM elliptic curve. The (Griffiths) intermediate Jacobians of these $\hat{T/G}$ are identified explicitly as the corresponding elliptic curve appeared in the structure of $T$. We further provide the $\QZ$-structure of $\hat{T/G}$ and verify their modularity property.
We explicitly construct the Kummer variety associated to the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 that is defined over a field of characteristic not equal to 2 and has a Weierstraß point defined over the same field. We also construct homogeneous quartic polynomials on the Kummer variety and show that they represent the duplication map.
This paper classifies Enriques surfaces whose K3-cover is a fixed Picard-general Jacobian Kummer surface. There are exactly 31 such surfaces. We describe the free involutions which give these Enriques surfaces explicitly. As a biproduct, we show that Aut(X) is generated by elements of order 2, which is an improvement of the theorem of S. Kondo.
We prove Welter's trisecant conjecture: an indecomposable principally polarized abelian variety $X$ is the Jacobian of a curve if and only if there exists a trisecant of its Kummer variety $K(X)$.
We describe all the elliptic fibrations with section on the Kummer surface X of the Jacobian of a very general curve C of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, modulo the automorphism group of X and the symmetric group on the Weierstrass points of C. In particular, we compute elliptic parameters and Weierstrass equations for the 25 different fibrations and analyze the reducible fibers and Mordell-Weil lattices. This answers completely a question posed by Kuwata and Shioda in 2008.
Given an abelian variety $X$ and a point $a\in X$ we denote by $<a>$ the closure of the subgroup of $X$ generated by $a$. Let $N=2^g-1$. We denote by $κ: X\to κ(X)\subset\mathbb P^N$ the map from $X$ to its Kummer variety. We prove that an indecomposable abelian variety $X$ is the Jacobian of a curve if and only if there exists a point $a=2b\in X\setminus\{0\}$ such that $<a>$ is irreducible and $κ(b)$ is a flex of $κ(X)$.
We explicitly find an equation and a projective embedding of the Kummer surface associated to the Jacobian of a curve of genus 2 given by an equation of the form y^2 + h(x)y = f(x) over an arbitrary ground field as well as several maps that can be used to perform arithmetic on it. This extends earlier work by Flynn and has applications, for instance, in computations of canonical heights for genus 2 Jacobians and in cryptography.
Let $k$ be a number field. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for Kummer varieties over $k$. For example, for any Kummer variety $X$ over $k$, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the ($2$-primary) Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for zero-cycles of any given odd degree on $X$ over $k$. We also obtain similar results for pr…
Let $k$ be a number field, let $X$ be a Kummer variety over $k$, and let $δ$ be an odd integer. In the spirit of a result by Yongqi Liang, we relate the arithmetic of rational points over finite extensions of $k$ to that of zero-cycles over $k$ for $X$. For example, we show that if the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of rational points on $X$ over all finite extensions of $k$, then the $2$-primary Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the existence of a zero-cycle of degree $δ$ on $X$ over $k$.
We construct and study curves with low H-constants on abelian and K3 surfaces. Using the Kummer $(16_{6})$-configurations on Jacobian surfaces and some $(16_{10})$-configurations of curves on $(1,3)$-polarized Abelian surfaces, we obtain examples of configurations of curves of genus $>1$ on a generic Jacobian K3 surface with H-constants $<-4$.
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
Fay's trisecant formula shows that the Kummer variety of the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve has a four dimensional family of trisecant lines. We study when these lines intersect the theta divisor of the Jacobian, and prove that the Gauss map of the theta divisor is constant on these points of intersection, when defined. We investigate the relation between the Gauss map and multisecant planes of the Kummer variety as well.
We give explicit equations of smooth Jacobian Kummer surfaces of degree 8 by theta functions. As byproducts, we can write down Rosenhain's 80 hyperpanes and 32 lines on these Kummer surfaces explicitly.
We develop an explicit theory of Kummer varieties associated to Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3, over any field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2$. In particular, we provide explicit equations defining the Kummer variety $\mathcal K$ as a subvariety of $\mathbb P^7$, together with explicit polynomials giving the duplication map on $\mathcal K$. A careful study of the degenerations of this map then forms the basis for the development of an explicit theory of heights on such Jacobians when $k$ is a number field. We use this input to obtain a good bound on the difference between naive an…
We use the arithmetic of the Kummer surface associated to the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve to study the primality of integers of the form $4m^2 5^n-1$. We provide an algorithm capable of proving the primality or compositeness of most of the integers in these families and discuss in detail the necessary steps to implement this algorithm in a computer. Although an indetermination is possible, in which case another choice of initial parameters should be used, we prove that the probability of reaching this situation is exceedingly low and decreases exponentially with $n$.
We give algorithms for computing with divisors on projective curves over finite fields, and with their Jacobians, using the algorithmic representation of projective curves developed by Khuri-Makdisi. We show that many desirable operations can be done efficiently in this setting: decomposing divisors into prime divisors; computing pull-backs and push-forwards of divisors under finite morphisms, and hence Picard and Albanese maps on Jacobians; generating uniformly random divisors and points on Jacobians; computing Frobenius maps and Kummer maps; and finding a basis for the $l$-torsion of the Pic…
We present a treatment of the algebraic description of the Jacobian of a generic genus two plane curve which exploits an SL2(k) equivariance and clarifes the structure of E.V.Flynn's 72 defining quadratic relations. The treatment is also applied to the Kummer variety.
We construct examples of number fields which are not isomorphic but for which their idele class groups are isomorphic. We also construct examples of projective algebraic curves which are not isomorphic but for which their Jacobian varieties are isomorphic. Both are constructed using an example in group theory provided by Leonard Scott of a finite group $G$ and subgroups $H_1$ and $H_2$ which are not conjugate in $G$ but for which the $G$-module ${\mathbb Z}[G/H_1]$ is isomorphic to ${\mathbb Z}[G/H_2]$.
In this paper we study genus 2 curves whose Jacobians admit a polarized (4,4)-isogeny to a product of elliptic curves. We consider base fields of characteristic different from 2 and 3, which we do not assume to be algebraically closed. We obtain a full classification of all principally polarized abelian surfaces that can arise from gluing two elliptic curves along their 4-torsion and we derive the relation their absolute invariants satisfy. As an intermediate step, we give a general description of Richelot isogenies between Jacobians of genus 2 curves, where previously only Richelot isogenies …
Let $Θ$ be a symmetric theta divisor on an indecomposable principally polarized complex abelian variety $X$. The linear system $|2Θ|$ defines a morphism $K:X\ra |2Θ|^*$, whose image is the Kummer variety $K(X)$ of $X$. When $(X,θ)$ is the Jacobian of an algebraic curve, there are infinitely many trisecants lines to $K(X)$. Welters has conjectured that the existence of one trisecant line to the Kummer variety should characterize Jacobians. The purpose of this article is to show the following weak version of Welters conjecture: $X$ is a Jacobian if and only if there exist points $a,b,c$ of $X$ s…
By carrying out a rational transformation on the base curve $\mathbb{CP}^1$ of the Seiberg-Witten curve for $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric pure $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-gauge theory, we obtain a family of Jacobian elliptic K3 surfaces of Picard rank 17. The isogeny relating the Seiberg-Witten curve for pure $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-gauge theory to the one for $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-gauge theory with $N_f=2$ massless hypermultiplets extends to define a Nikulin involution on each K3 surface in the family. We show that the desingularization of the quotient of the K3 surface by the involution is isomorphic to a Kummer …
In this survey of works on a characterization of Jacobians and Prym varieties among indecomposable principally polarized abelian varieties via the soliton theory we focus on a certain circle of ideas and methods which show that the characterization of Jacobians as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a trisecant line and the Pryms as ppav whose Kummer variety admits a pair of symmetric quadrisecants can be seen as an abelian version of pole systems arising in the theory of elliptic solutions to the basic soliton hierarchies. We present also recent results in this direction on the characterization …
We introduce an algorithm to compute the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 over the rationals. We apply a Magma implementation of our algorithm to a database of curves with low discriminant due to Sutherland as well as a list of curves with small coefficients. In the process, we find several torsion structures not previously described in the literature. The algorithm is a generalisation of an algorithm for genus 2 due to Stoll, which we extend to abelian varieties satisfying certain conditions. The idea is to compute p-adic torsion lifts of points ov…
We explore some of the interplay between Brill-Noether subvarieties of the moduli space SU_C(2,K) of rank 2 bundles with canonical determinant on a smooth projective curve and 2θdivisors, via the inclusion of the moduli space into |2θ|, singular along the Kummer variety. In particular we show that the moduli space contains all the trisecants of the Kummer and deduce that there are quadrisecant lines only if the curve is hyperelliptic; we show that for generic curves of genus <6, though no higher, bundles with >2 sections are cut out by Γ_00; and that for genus 4 this locus is precisely the Don…
We give two characterizations of Jacobians of curves with involution having fixed points in the framework of two particular cases of Welter's trisecant conjecture. The geometric form of each of these characterizations is the statement that such Jacobians are exactly those containing a shifted Abelian subvariety whose image under the Kummer map is orthogonal to an explicitly given vector.
We propose a solution to the hyperelliptic Schottky problem, based on the use of Jacobian Nullwerte and symmetric models for hyperelliptic curves. Both ingredients are interesting on its own, since the first provide period matrices which can be geometrically described, and the second have remarkable arithmetic properties.
Let $X$ (resp. $Y$) be a curve of genus 1 (resp. 2) over a base field $k$ whose characteristic does not equal 2. We give criteria for the existence of a curve $Z$ over $k$ whose Jacobian is up to twist (2,2,2)-isogenous to the products of the Jacobians of $X$ and $Y$. Moreover, we give algorithms to construct the curve $Z$ once equations for $X$ and $Y$ are given. The first of these involves the use of hyperplane sections of the Kummer variety of $Y$ whose desingularization is isomorphic to $X$, whereas the second is based on interpolation methods involving numerical results over $\mathbb{C}$ …
In a previous joint article with F. Abu Salem, we gave efficient algorithms for Jacobian group arithmetic of "typical" divisor classes on C_{3,4} curves, improving on similar results by other authors. At that time, we could only state that a generic divisor was typical, and hence unlikely to be encountered if one implemented these algorithms over a very large finite field. This article pins down an explicit characterization of these typical divisors, for an arbitrary smooth projective curve of genus g >= 1 having at least one rational point. We give general algorithms for Jacobian group arithm…
Let X be a hyperkaehler manifold of Kummer type. We study the 4 dimensional intermediate Jacobian J^3(X) constructed out of the 3rd cohomology of X, motivated by the desire to understand the Kuga-Satake torus associated to X. We prove that there is an embedding of Hodge structures of H^2(X) into H^2(J^3(X)). It follows that if X is projective with polarization L, the projective Kuga-Satake torus of (X,L) is isogenous to the fourth power of J^3(X). By studying the cohomology ring of X, we find that there is a natural smooth quadric Q(X) in the projectivization of H^3(X), with a natural choice o…
We study the Jacobian $J$ of the smooth projective curve $C$ of genus $r-1$ with affine model $y^r = x^{r-1}(x + 1)(x + t)$ over the function field $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$, when $p$ is prime and $r\ge 2$ is an integer prime to $p$. When $q$ is a power of $p$ and $d$ is a positive integer, we compute the $L$-function of $J$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t^{1/d})$ and show that the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture holds for $J$ over $\mathbb{F}_q(t^{1/d})$. When $d$ is divisible by $r$ and of the form $p^ν+1$, and $K_d := \mathbb{F}_p(μ_d,t^{1/d})$, we write down explicit points in $J(K_d)$, show that they g…
We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.
We describe two constructions of elliptic K3 surfaces starting from the Kummer surface of the Jacobian of a genus 2 curve. These parallel the base-change constructions of Kuwata for the Kummer surface of a product of two elliptic curves. One of these also involves the analogue of an Inose fibration. We use these methods to provide explicit examples of elliptic K3 surfaces over the rationals of geometric Mordell-Weil rank 15.
We give a criterion to distinguish between a genus three Jacobian and its [-1] twist in terms of the product of the 36 even theta nulls. We also express the product of the 36 theta nulls in terms of the discriminant of a genus three curve. The results are arithmetic in nature and thus add to previous work over C on the product of the even theta nulls. They generalize previous work of Ritzenthaler and Lachaud for Abelian threefolds which are (2,2,2) isogenous to a product of elliptic curves. This answers a 2003 of letter of Jean-Pierre Serre to Jaap Top.
We show that the recent conjecture of the first-named author for the special value at $s=1$ of the zeta function of an arithmetic surface is equivalent to the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the Jacobian of the generic fibre.
We extend the results of the first author on nontrivial elements in the Shafarevich-Tate group of the jacobian of a quotient of a Fermat curve of prime degree, and use the methods of the second author to derive a result bounding the quadratic points on the Fermat curve of degree 19.
Genus 2 curves have been an object of much mathematical interest since eighteenth century and continued interest to date. They have become an important tool in many algorithms in cryptographic applications, such as factoring large numbers, hyperelliptic curve cryptography, etc. Choosing genus 2 curves suitable for such applications is an important step of such algorithms. In existing algorithms often such curves are chosen using equations of moduli spaces of curves with decomposable Jacobians or Humbert surfaces. In these lectures we will cover basic properties of genus 2 curves, moduli spaces…
We prove by explicit example that the compactified jacobian can be nonreduced. The example is a rational space curve of arithmetic genus 4. This answers a question posed by Cyril D'Souza in 1979.
For several applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties it is important to compute canonical heights. Following Faltings and Hriljac, we show how the canonical height on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve can be computed using arithmetic intersection theory on a regular model of the curve in practice. In the case of hyperelliptic curves we present a complete algorithm that has been implemented in Magma. Several examples are computed and the behavior of the running time is discussed.
Let $\mathcal X$ be a genus 2 curve defined over a field $K$, $\mbox{char} K = p \geq 0$, and $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X, ι)$ its Jacobian, where $ι$ is the principal polarization of $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X)$ attached to $\mathcal X$. Assume that $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X)$ is $(n, n)$- geometrically reducible with $E_1$ and $E_2$ its elliptic components. We prove that there are only finitely many curves $\mathcal X$ (up to isomorphism) defined over $K$ such that $E_1$ and $E_2$ are $N$-isogenous for $n=2$ and $N=2,3, 5, 7$ with $\mbox{Aut} (\mbox{Jac} \mathcal X )\cong V_4$ or $n = 2$, $N = 3,5, 7…
We give a close formula for the Néron-Tate height of tautological integral cycles on Jacobians of curves over number fields as well as a new lower bound for the arithmetic self-intersection number $\hatω^2$ of the dualizing sheaf of a curve in terms of Zhang's invariant $φ$. As an application, we obtain an effective Bogomolov-type result for the tautological cycles. We deduce these results from a more general combinatorial computation of arithmetic intersection numbers of adelic line bundles on higher self-products of curves, which are linear combinations of pullbacks of line bundles on the cu…
