In this paper we develop a white noise framework for the study of stochastic partial differential equations driven by a d-parameter (pure jump) Levy white noise. As an example we use this theory to solve the stochastic Poisson equation with respect to Levy white noise for any dimension d. The solution is a stochastic distribution process given explicitly. We also show that if d\leq 3, then this solution can be represented as a classical random field in L2(μ), where μis the probability law of the Levy process.
The starting point of our theory is a chaos expansion in terms of generalized
Charlier polynomials. Based on this expansion we define Kondratiev spaces and the Levy Hermite transform.
We identify a necessary and sufficient condition for a Lévy white noise to be a tempered distribution. More precisely, we show that if the Lévy measure associated with this noise has a positive absolute moment, then the Lévy white noise almost surely takes values in the space of tempered distributions. If the Lévy measure does not have a positive absolute moment of any order, then the event on which the Lévy white noise is a tempered distribution has probability zero.
This paper deals with linear stochastic partial differential equations with variable coefficients driven by Lévy white noise. We first derive an existence theorem for integral transforms of Lévy white noise and prove the existence of generalized and mild solutions of second order elliptic partial differential equations. Furthermore, we discuss the generalized electric Schrödinger operator for different potential functions $V$.
We study the growth properties of the family of i.i.d. random sequences, also known as discrete white noises, and of their continuous-domain generalization, the family of Lévy white noises. More precisely, we characterize the members of both families which are tempered in terms of their moment properties. We recover the characterization of tempered Lévy white noises obtained by Robert Dalang and Thomas Humeau and provide a new proof of there fundamental result. Our approach is based on a fruitful connection between the discrete and continuous-domain white noises.
It is possible to construct Lévy white noises as generalized random processes in the sense of Gel'fand and Vilenkin, or as an independently scattered random measures introduced by Rajput and Rosinski. In this article, we unify those two approaches by extending the Lévy white noise, defined as a generalized random process, to an independently scattered random measure. We are then able to give general integrability conditions for Lévy white noises, thereby maximally enlarging their domain of definition. Based on this connection, we provide new criteria for the practical determination of the doma…
We characterize the local smoothness and the asymptotic growth rate of the Lévy white noise. We do so by characterizing the weighted Besov spaces in which it is located. We extend known results in two ways. First, we obtain new bounds for the local smoothness via the Blumenthal-Getoor indices of the Lévy white noise. We also deduce the critical local smoothness when the two indices coincide, which is true for symmetric-alpha-stable, compound Poisson, and symmetric-gamma white noises to name a few. Second, we express the critical asymptotic growth rate in terms of the moment properties of the L…
Based on the theory of independently scattered random measures, we introduce a natural generalisation of Gaussian space-time white noise to a Levy-type setting, which we call Levy-valued random measures. We determine the subclass of cylindrical Levy processes which correspond to Levy-valued random measures, and describe the elements of this subclass uniquely by their characteristic function. We embed the Levy-valued random measure, or the corresponding cylindrical Levy process, in the space of general and tempered distributions. For the latter case, we show that this embedding is possible if a…
In this article, we show that the Brownian motion on the circle constructed in Levy (1959) is a regular Euclidean Brownian motion on the half-circle with its own mirror image on the other half-circle, and is degenerated in the sense of Minlos (1959). This raises the question of what the white noise is on the circle. We then formally define the white noise space and its associated Brownian bridge.
In this article, we consider a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE) driven by a Lévy white noise, with Lipschitz multiplicative term $σ$. We prove that under some conditions, this equation has a unique random field solution. These conditions are verified by the stochastic heat and wave equations. We introduce the basic elements of Malliavin calculus with respect to the compensated Poisson random measure associated with the Lévy white noise. If $σ$ is affine, we prove that the solution is Malliavin differentiable and its Malliavin derivative satisfies a stochastic integral equation.
In this article, we give a new proof of the Itô formula for some integral processes related to the space-time Lévy white noise introduced in Balan (2015) as an alternative for the Gaussian white noise perturbing an SPDE. We discuss two applications of this result, which are useful in the study of SPDEs driven by a space-time Lévy noise with finite variance: a maximal inequality for the $p$-th moment of the stochastic integral, and the Itô representation theorem leading to a chaos expansion similar to the Gaussian case.
In this article, we consider the stochastic wave equation in dimension 1 driven by the Lévy white noise introduced in Balan (2015). Using Rosenthal's inequality, we develop a maximal inequality for the moments of order $p \geq 2$ of the integral with respect to this noise. Based on this inequality, we show that this equation has a unique solution, which is weakly intermittent in the sense of Foondun and Khoshnevisan (2009) and Khoshnevisan (2014).
Consider a random process s solution of the stochastic partial differential equation Ls = w with L a homogeneous operator and w a multidimensional Lévy white noise. In this paper, we study the asymptotic effect of zooming in or zooming out of the process s. More precisely, we give sufficient conditions on L and w so that the rescaled versions of s converges in law to a self-similar process of order H at coarse scales and at fine scales. The parameter H depends on the homogeneity order of the operator L and the Blumenthal-Getoor indices associated to the Lévy white noise w. Finally, we apply ou…
In this article, we study the stochastic wave equation on the entire space $\mathbb{R}^d$, driven by a space-time Lévy white noise with possibly infinite variance (such as the $α$-stable Lévy noise). In this equation, the noise is multiplied by a Lipschitz function $σ(u)$ of the solution. We assume that the spatial dimension is $d=1$ or $d=2$. Under general conditions on the Lévy measure of the noise, we prove the existence of the solution, and we show that, as a function-valued process, the solution has a càdlàg modification in the local fractional Sobolev space of order $r<1/4$ if $d=1$, res…
We study the notions of mild solution and generalized solution to a linear stochastic partial differential equation driven by a pure jump symmetric Lévy white noise. We identify conditions for existence for these two kinds of solutions, and we identify conditions under which they are essentially equivalent. We establish a necessary condition for the existence of a random field solution to a linear SPDE, and we apply this result to the linear stochastic heat, wave and Poisson equations driven by a symmetric $α$-stable noise.
In this paper, we study the compressibility of random processes and fields, called generalized Lévy processes, that are solutions of stochastic differential equations driven by $d$-dimensional periodic Lévy white noises. Our results are based on the estimation of the Besov regularity of Lévy white noises and generalized Lévy processes. We show in particular that non-Gaussian generalized Lévy processes are more compressible in a wavelet basis than the corresponding Gaussian processes, in the sense that their $n$-term approximation error decays faster. We quantify this compressibility in terms o…
In this paper, we study the Besov regularity of d-dimensional Lévy white noises. More precisely, we describe new sample paths properties of a given white noise in terms of weighted Besov spaces. In particular, the smoothness and integrability properties of Lévy white noises are characterized using the Blumenthal-Getoor indices. Our techniques rely on wavelet methods and generalized moments estimates for Lévy white noises.
In this paper, we study the Besov regularity of Lévy white noises on the $d$-dimensional torus. Due to their rough sample paths, the white noises that we consider are defined as generalized stochastic fields. We, initially, obtain regularity results for general Lévy white noises. Then, we focus on two subclasses of noises: compound Poisson and symmetric-$α$-stable (including Gaussian), for which we make more precise statements. Before measuring regularity, we show that the question is well-posed; we prove that Besov spaces are in the cylindrical $σ$-field of the space of generalized functions.…
We review some recent developments in white noise analysis and quantum probability. We pay a special attention to spaces of test and generalized functionals of some Lévy white noises, as well as as to the structure of quantum white noise on these spaces.
The goal of this paper is twofold. In the first part we will study Lévy white noise in different distributional spaces and solve equations of the type $p(D)s=q(D)\dot{L}$, where $p$ and $q$ are polynomials. Furthermore, we will study measurability of $s$ in Besov spaces. By using this result we will prove that stochastic partial differential equations of the form \begin{align*} p(D)u=g(\cdot,u)+\dot{L} \end{align*} have measurable solutions in weighted Besov spaces, where $p(D)$ is a partial differential operator in a certain class, $g:\mathbb{R}^d\times \mathbb{C}\to \mathbb{R}$ satisfies som…
The aim of this paper is to establish a global asymptotic equivalence between the experiments generated by the discrete (high frequency) or continuous observation of a path of a L{é}vy process and a Gaussian white noise experiment observed up to a time T, with T tending to $\infty$. These approximations are given in the sense of the Le Cam distance, under some smoothness conditions on the unknown L{é}vy density. All the asymptotic equivalences are established by constructing explicit Markov kernels that can be used to reproduce one experiment from the other.
In this paper, we establish a large deviation principle for a type of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with locally monotone coefficients driven by Lévy noise. The weak convergence method plays an important role.
We focus in this paper on the stochastic stabilization problems of PDEs by Levy noise. Sufficient conditions under which the perturbed systems decay exponentially with a general rate function are provided and some examples are constructed to demonstrate the applications of our theory.
We give a new definition of a Lévy driven CARMA random field, defining it as a generalized solution of a stochastic partial differential equation (SPDE). Furthermore, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of a mild solution of our SPDE. Our model finds a connection between all known definitions of CARMA random fields, and especially for dimension 1 we obtain the classical CARMA process.
This work considers weak approximations of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by Lévy noise. The SPDEs at hand are parabolic with additive noise processes. A weak-convergence rate for the corresponding Galerkin approximation is derived. The convergence result is derived by use of the Malliavin derivative rather then the common approach via the Kolmogorov backward equation.
This work is devoted to deriving the Onsager-Machlup action functional for stochastic partial differential equations with (non-Gaussian) Levy process as well as Gaussian Brownian motion. This is achieved by applying the Girsanov transformation for probability measures and then by a path representation. This enables the investigation of the most probable transition path for infinite dimensional stochastic dynamical systems modeled by stochastic partial differential equations, by minimizing the Onsager-Machlup action functional.
In this work, we consider the stochastic Cauchy problem driven by the canonical $α$-stable cylindrical Lévy process. This noise naturally generalises the cylindrical Brownian motion or space-time Gaussian white noise. We derive a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of the weak and mild solution of the stochastic Cauchy problem and establish the temporal irregularity of the solution.
In this article, the existence of a unique solution in the variational approach of the stochastic evolution equation $$\dX(t) = F(X(t)) \dt + G(X(t)) \dL(t)$$ driven by a cylindrical Lévy process $L$ is established. The coefficients $F$ and $G$ are assumed to satisfy the usual monotonicity and coercivity conditions. The noise is modelled by a cylindrical Lévy processes which is assumed to belong to a certain subclass of cylindrical Lévy processes and may not have finite moments.
We identify the representation of the square of white noise obtained by L. Accardi, U. Franz and M. Skeide in [Comm. Math. Phys. 228 (2002), 123--150] with the Jacobi field of a Lévy process of Meixner's type.
The characterization of the covariance function of the solution process to a stochastic partial differential equation is considered in the parabolic case with multiplicative Lévy noise of affine type. For the second moment of the mild solution, a well-posed deterministic space-time variational problem posed on projective and injective tensor product spaces is derived, which subsequently leads to a deterministic equation for the covariance function.
We analyze the spatial asymptotic properties of the solution to the stochastic heat equation driven by an additive Lévy space-time white noise. For fixed time $t > 0$ and space $x \in \mathbb{R}^d$ we determine the exact tail behavior of the solution both for light-tailed and for heavy-tailed Lévy jump measures. Based on these asymptotics we determine for any fixed time $t> 0$ the almost-sure growth rate of the solution as $|x| \to \infty$.
In this paper, we deal with a class of backward doubly stochastic differential equations (BDSDEs, in short) involving subdifferential operator of a convex function and driven by Teugels martingales associated with a Lévy process. We show the existence and uniqueness result by means of Yosida approximation. As an application, we give the existence of stochastic viscosity solution for a class of multivalued stochastic partial differential-integral equations (MSPIDEs, in short).
We consider a Lévy process in the plane and we use it to construct a family of complex-valued random fields that we show to converge in law, in the space of continuous functions, to a complex Brownian sheet. We apply this result to obtain weak approximations of the random field solution to a semilinear one-dimensional stochastic heat equation driven by the space-time white noise.
In this article we introduce a theory of integration for deterministic, operator-valued integrands with respect to cylindrical Lévy processes in separable Banach spaces. Here, a cylindrical Lévy process is understood in the classical framework of cylindrical random variables and cylindrical measures, and thus, it can be considered as a natural generalisation of cylindrical Wiener processes or white noises. Depending on the underlying Banach space, we provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for a function to be integrable. In the last part, the developed theory is applied to define Ornst…
In this paper we show the existence and form uniqueness of a solution for multidimensional backward stochastic differential equations driven by a multidimensional Lévy process with moments of all orders. The results are important from a pure mathematical point of view as well as in the world of finance: an application to Clark-Ocone and Feynman-Kac formulas for multidimensional Lévy processes is presented. Moreover, the Feynman-Kac formula and the related partial differential integral equations provide an analogue of the famous Black-Scholes partial differential equation and thus can be used f…
The asymptotic analysis of a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with fully locally monotone coefficients covering a large variety of physical systems, a wide class of quasilinear SPDEs and a good number of fluid dynamic models is carried out in this work. The aim of this work is to develop the large deviation theory for small Gaussian as well as Poisson noise perturbations of the above class of SPDEs. We establish a Wentzell-Freidlin type large deviation principle for the strong solutions to such SPDEs perturbed by Lévy noise in a suitable Polish space using a variation…
Let $T=\mathbb R^d$. Let a function $Q:T^2\to\mathbb C$ satisfy $Q(s,t)=\bar{Q(t,s)}$ and $|Q(s,t)|=1$. A generalized statistics is described by creation operators $\partial_t^†$ and annihilation operators $\partial_t$, $t\in T$, which satisfy the $Q$-commutation relations. From the point of view of physics, the most important case of a generalized statistics is the anyon statistics, for which $Q(s,t)$ is equal to $q$ if $s<t$, and to $\bar q$ if $s>t$. Here $q\in\mathbb C$, $|q|=1$. We start the paper with a detailed discussion of a $Q$-Fock space and operators $(\partial_t^†,\partial_t)_{t\i…
By a coupling method, we prove that a family of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by highly degenerate pure jump Lévy noises are exponential mixing. These pure jump Lévy noises include $α$-stable process with $α\in (0,2)$
We develop a stochastic calculus for processes which are built by convoluting a pure jump, zero expectation Lévy process with a Volterra-type kernel. This class of processes contains, for example, fractional Lévy processes as studied by Marquardt [Bernoulli 12 (2006) 1090--1126.] The integral which we introduce is a Skorokhod integral. Nonetheless, we avoid the technicalities from Malliavin calculus and white noise analysis and give an elementary definition based on expectations under change of measure. As a main result, we derive an Itô formula which separates the different contributions from…
Let $(X_t)_{t\ge0}$ denote a non-commutative monotone Lévy process. Let $ω=(ω(t))_{t\ge0}$ denote the corresponding monotone Lévy noise.. A continuous polynomial of $ω$ is an element of the corresponding non-commutative $L^2$-space $L^2(τ)$ that has the form $\sum_{i=0}^n\langle ω^{\otimes i},f^{(i)}\rangle$, where $f^{(i)}\in C_0(\mathbb R_+^i)$. We denote by $\mathbf{CP}$ the space of all continuous polynomials of $ω$. For $f^{(n)}\in C_0(\mathbb R_+^n)$, the orthogonal polynomial $\langle P^{(n)}(ω),f^{(n)}\rangle$ is defined as the orthogonal projection of the monomial $\langleω^{\otimes n…
A simple axiomatic characterization of the general (infinite dimensional, noncommutative) Ito algebra is given and a pseudo-Euclidean fundamental representation for such algebra is described. The notion of Ito B*-algebra, generalizing the C*-algebra is defined to include the Banach infinite dimensional Ito algebras of quantum Brownian and quantum Levy motion, and the B*-algebras of vacuum and thermal quantum noise are characterized. It is proved that every Ito algebra is canonically decomposed into the orthogonal sum of quantum Brownian (Wiener) algebra and quantum Levy (Poisson) algebra. In p…
We present an $L_{p}$-theory ($p\geq 2$) for time-fractional stochastic partial differential equations driven by Lévy processes of the type $$ \partial^α_{t}u=\sum_{i,j=1}^d a^{ij}u_{x^{i}x^{j}} +f+\sum_{k=1}^{\infty}\partial^β_{t}\int_{0}^{t} (\sum_{i=1}^dμ^{ik} u_{x^i} +g^k) dZ^k_{s} $$ given with nonzero intial data. Here $\partial^α_t$ and $\partial^β_t$ are the Caputo fractional derivatives, $α\in (0,2), β\in (0,α+1/p)$, and $\{Z^k_t:k=1,2,\cdots\}$ is a sequence of independent Lévy processes. The coefficients are random functions depending on $(t,x)$. We prove the uniqueness and existenc…
We review the probabilistic properties of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes in Hilbert spaces driven by Lévy processes. The emphasis is on the different contexts in which these processes arise, such as stochastic partial differential equations, continuous-state branching processes, generalised Mehler semigroups and operator self-decomposable distributions. We also examine generalisations to the case where the driving noise is cylindrical.
We explicitly construct and study an isometry between the spaces of square integrable functionals of an arbitrary Levy process and a vector-valued Gaussian white noise. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for this isometry at the level of multiplicative functionals and at the level of orthogonal decompositions, as well as find its kernel. We consider in detail the central special case: the isometry between the $L^2$ spaces over a Poisson process and the corresponding white noise. The key role in our considerations is played by the notion of measure and Hilbert factorizations and related…
Motivated by the simulation of stable random fields, we consider the issue of discrete approximations of independently scattered stable noise. Two approaches are proposed: grid approximations available when the underlying space is $\bbR^d$ and shot noise approximations available on more general spaces. Limit theorems stating the convergence of discrete random noises to stable white noise are proved. These results are then applied to study moving average spatial random fields with heavy-tailed innovations and related limit theorems. A second application deals with discrete approximation for Bro…
