Generalized Polya urn models can describe the dynamics of finite populations of interacting genotypes. Three basic questions these models can address are: Under what conditions does a population exhibit growth? On the event of growth, at what rate does the population increase? What is the long-term behavior of the distribution of genotypes? To address these questions, we associate a mean limit ordinary differential equation (ODE) with the urn model. Previously, it has been shown that on the event of population growth, the limiting distribution of genotypes is a connected internally chain recurrent set for the mean limit ODE. To determine when growth and convergence occurs with positive probability, we prove two results. First, if the mean limit ODE has an ``attainable'' attractor at which growth is expected, then growth and convergence toward this attractor occurs with positive probability. Second, the population distribution almost surely does not converge to sets where growth is not expected
Interacting urns with exponential reinforcement were introduced and studied in Launay (2011). As its parameter $ρ$ tends to $\iy$, this reinforcement mechanism converges to the "generalized" reinforcement, in which the probability of draw may be 0 or 1 for some of the colors, depending on the current configuration. For a single urn, the generalized reinforcement is easy to analyse. We introduce and study the generalized interacting urn model with two or more urns and two colors. Our results concern the law of the so-called non-conformist urns, and answer in the asymptotic sense one of the open…
We consider systems of interacting Generalized Friedman's Urns (GFUs) having irreducible mean replacement matrices. The interaction is modeled through the probability to sample the colors from each urn, that is defined as convex combination of the urn proportions in the system. From the weights of these combinations we individuate subsystems of urns evolving with different behaviors. We provide a complete description of the asymptotic properties of urn proportions in each subsystem by establishing limiting proportions, convergence rates and Central Limit Theorems. The main proofs are based on …
We study an urn model introduced in the paper of Chen and Wei, where at each discrete time step $m$ balls are drawn at random from the urn containing colors white and black. Balls are added to the urn according to the inspected colors, generalizing the well known Pólya-Eggenberger urn model, case m=1. We provide exact expressions for the expectation and the variance of the number of white balls after n draws, and determine the structure of higher moments. Moreover, we discuss extensions to more than two colors. Furthermore, we introduce and discuss a new urn model where the sampling of the m b…
Consider a generalized time-dependent Pólya urn process defined as follows. Let $d\in \mathbb{N}$ be the number of urns/colors. At each time $n$, we distribute $σ_n$ balls randomly to the $d$ urns, proportionally to $f$, where $f$ is a valid reinforcement function. We consider a general class of positive reinforcement functions $\mathcal{R}$ assuming some monotonicity and growth condition. The class $\mathcal{R}$ includes convex functions and the classical case $f(x)=x^α$, $α>1$. The novelty of the paper lies in extending stochastic approximation techniques to the $d$-dimensional case and prov…
This paper is a further investigation of the generalized $N$-urn Ehrenfest model introduced in \cite{Xue2020}. A moderate deviation principle from the hydrodynamic limit of the model is derived. The proof of this main result follows a routine procedure introduced in \cite{Kipnis1989}, where a replacement lemma plays the key role. To prove the replacement lemma, the large deviation principle of the model given in \cite{Xue2020} is utilized.
We collect, survey and develop methods of (one-dimensional) stochastic approximation in a framework that seems suitable to handle fairly broad generalizations of Polya urns. To show the applicability of the results we determine the limiting fraction of balls in an urn with balls of two colors. We consider two models generalizing the Polya urn, in the first one ball is drawn and replaced with balls of (possibly) both colors according to which color was drawn. In the second, two balls are drawn simultaneously and replaced along with balls of (possibly) both colors according to what combination o…
The random vector of frequencies in a generalized urn model is viewed as conditionally independent random variables, given their sum. Such a representation is exploited to derive Edgeworth expansions for a sum of functions of such frequencies. Applying these results to urn models such as with- and without-replacement sampling schemes as well as the multicolor Polya-Egenberger model, new results are obtained for the chi-square statistic, for the sample sum in a without replacement scheme, and for the so-called Dixon statistic that is useful in comparing two samples.
In this paper, we consider a new type of urn scheme, where the selection probabilities are proportional to a weight function, which is linear but decreasing in the proportion of existing colours. We refer to it as the \emph{negatively reinforced} urn scheme. We establish almost sure limit of the random configuration for any \emph{balanced} replacement matrix $R$. In particular, we show that the limiting configuration is uniform on the set of colours, if and only if, $R$ is a \emph{doubly stochastic} matrix. We further establish almost sure limit of the vector of colour counts and prove central…
Generalized Friedman urn is one of the simplest and most useful models considered in probability theory. Since Athreya and Ney (1972) showed the almost sure convergence of urn proportions in a randomized urn model with irreducible replacement matrix under the $L\log L$ moment assumption, this assumption has been regarded as the weakest moment assumption, but the necessary has never been shown. In this paper, we study the strong and weak convergence of generalized Friedman urns. It is proved that, when the random replacement matrix is irreducible in probability, the sufficient and necessary mom…
We study a new class of time inhomogeneous Pólya-type urn schemes and give optimal rates of convergence for the distribution of the properly scaled number of balls of a given color to nearly the full class of generalized gamma distributions with integer parameters, a class which includes the Rayleigh, half-normal and gamma distributions. Our main tool is Stein's method combined with characterizing the generalized gamma limiting distributions as fixed points of distributional transformations related to the equilibrium distributional transformation from renewal theory. We identify special cases …
A competition process is a continuous time Markov chain that can be interpreted as a system of interacting birth-and-death processes, the components of which evolve subject to a competitive interaction. This paper is devoted to the study of the long-term behaviour of such a competition process, where a component of the process increases with a linear birth rate and decreases with a rate given by a linear function of other components. A zero is an absorbing state for each component, that is, when a component becomes zero, it stays zero forever (and we say that this component becomes extinct). W…
The purpose of this work is to establish a central limit theorem that can be applied to a particular form of Markov chains, including the number of descents in a random permutation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$, two-type generalized P{ó}lya urns, and some other urn models.
We study an urn process containing red and blue balls and two different strategies to reinforce the urn. Namely, a generalized Pólya-type strategy versus an i.i.d. one. At each step, one of the two reinforcement strategies is chosen by flipping a coin. We study the asymptotic behaviour of this urn model, and prove a law of large numbers, a central limit theorem and a functional limit theorem for the proportion of balls into the urn. A phase transition is also stated.
We propose new generalized multivariate hypergeometric distributions, which extremely resemble the classical multivariate hypergeometric distributions. The proposed distributions are derived based on an urn model approach. In contrast to existing methods, this approach does not involve hypergeometric series.
In this paper we are concerned with a generalized $N$-urn Ehrenfest model, where balls keeps independent random walks between $N$ boxes uniformly laid on $[0, 1]$. After a proper scaling of the transition rates function of the aforesaid random walk, we derive the hydrodynamic limit of the model, i.e., the law of large numbers which the empirical measure of the model follows, under an assumption where the initial number of balls in each box independently follows a Poisson distribution. We show that the empirical measure of the model converges weakly to a deterministic measure with density drive…
Generalized Polya urn models have been used to model the establishment dynamics of a small founding population consisting of k different genotypes or strategies. As population sizes get large, these population processes are well-approximated by a mean limit ordinary differential equation whose state space is the k simplex. We prove that if this mean limit ODE has an attractor at which the temporal averages of the population growth rate is positive, then there is a positive probability of the population not going extinct (i.e. growing without bound) and its distribution converging to the attrac…
The Friedman's urn model is a popular urn model which is widely used in many disciplines. In particular, it is extensively used in treatment allocation schemes in clinical trials. In this paper, we prove that both the urn composition process and the allocation proportion process can be approximated by a multi-dimensional Gaussian process almost surely for a multi-color generalized Friedman's urn model with non-homogeneous generating matrices. The Gaussian process is a solution of a stochastic differential equation. This Gaussian approximation together with the properties of the Gaussian proces…
In this paper we are concerned with a family of $N$-urn branching processes, where some particles are put into $N$ urns initially and then each particle gives birth to several new particles in some urn when dies. This model includes the $N$-urn Ehrenfest model and the $N$-urn branching random walk as special cases. We show that the scaling limit of the process is driven by a $C(\mathbb{T})$-valued linear ordinary differential equation and the fluctuation of the process is driven by a generalized Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in the dual of $C^\infty(\mathbb{T})$, where $\mathbb{T}=(0, 1]$ is the …
Bona [2007+] studied the distribution of ascents, plateaux and descents in the class of Stirling permutations, introduced by Gessel and Stanley [1978]. Recently, Janson [2008+] showed the connection between Stirling permutations and plane recursive trees and proved a joint normal law for the parameters considered by Bona. Here we will consider generalized Stirling permutations extending the earlier results of Bona and Janson, and relate them with certain families of generalized plane recursive trees, and also $(k+1)$-ary increasing trees. We also give two different bijections between certain f…
The generalized Pòlya urn (GPU) models and their variants have been investigated in several disciplines. However, typical assumptions made with respect to the GPU do not include urn models with diagonal replacement matrix, which arise in several applications, specifically in clinical trials. To facilitate mathematical analyses of models in these applications, we introduce an adaptive randomly reinforced urn model that uses accruing statistical information to adaptively skew the urn proportion toward specific targets. We study several probabilistic aspects that are important in implementing the…
We study a general preferential attachment and Polya's urn model. At each step a new vertex is introduced, which can be connected to at most one existing vertex. If it is disconnected, it becomes a pioneer vertex. Given that it is not disconnected, it joins an existing pioneer vertex with probability proportional to a function of the degree of that vertex. This function is allowed to be vertex-dependent, and is called the reinforcement function. We prove that there can be at most three phases in this model, depending on the behavior of the reinforcement function. Consider the set whose element…
We consider a special case of the generalized Pólya's urn model introduced by Benaim et al (2013). Given a finite connected graph $G$, place a bin at each vertex. Two bins are called a pair if they share an edge of $G$. At discrete times, a ball is added to each pair of bins. In a pair of bins, one of the bins gets the ball with probability proportional to its current number of balls. A question of essential interest for the model is to understand the limiting behavior of the proportion of balls in the bins for different graphs $G$. In this paper, we present two results regarding this question…
We introduce the Generalized Rescaled Polya (GRP) urn, that provides a generative model for a chi-squared test of goodness of fit for the long-term probabilities of clustered data, with independence between clusters and correlation, due to a reinforcement mechanism, inside each cluster. We apply the proposed test to a data set of Twitter posts about COVID-19 pandemic: in a few words, for a classical chi-squared test the data result strongly significant for the rejection of the null hypothesis (the daily long-run sentiment rate remains constant), but, taking into account the correlation among d…
Cumulative advantage (CA) refers to the notion that accumulated resources foster the accumulation of further resources in competitions, a phenomenon that has been empirically observed in various contexts. The oldest and arguably simplest mathematical model that embodies this general principle is the Pólya urn process, which finds applications in a myriad of problems. The original model captures the dynamics of competitions between two equally fit agents under linear CA effects, which can be readily generalized to incorporate different fitnesses and nonlinear CA effects. We study two statistics…
We describe the combinatorial stochastic process underlying a sequence of conditionally independent Bernoulli processes with a shared beta process hazard measure. As shown by Thibaux and Jordan [TJ07], in the special case when the underlying beta process has a constant concentration function and a finite and nonatomic mean, the combinatorial structure is that of the Indian buffet process (IBP) introduced by Griffiths and Ghahramani [GG05]. By reinterpreting the beta process introduced by Hjort [Hjo90] as a measurable family of Dirichlet processes, we obtain a simple predictive rule for the gen…
The models surveyed include generalized Pólya urns, reinforced random walks, interacting urn models, and continuous reinforced processes. Emphasis is on methods and results, with sketches provided of some proofs. Applications are discussed in statistics, biology, economics and a number of other areas.
We study a generalized Pólya urn model with two types of ball. If the drawn ball is red, it is replaced together with a black ball, but if the drawn ball is black it is replaced and a red ball is thrown out of the urn. When only black balls remain, the roles of the colors are swapped and the process restarts. We prove that the resulting Markov chain is transient but that if we throw out a ball every time the colors swap, the process is recurrent. We show that the embedded process obtained by observing the number of balls in the urn at the swapping times has a scaling limit that is essentially …
Given a finite connected graph G, place a bin at each vertex. Two bins are called a pair if they share an edge of G. At discrete times, a ball is added to each pair of bins. In a pair of bins, one of the bins gets the ball with probability proportional to its current number of balls raised by some fixed power a>0. We characterize the limiting behavior of the proportion of balls in the bins. The proof uses a dynamical approach to relate the proportion of balls to a vector field. Our main result is that the limit set of the proportion of balls is contained in the equilibria set of the vector fie…
Conditional identity in distribution (Berti et al. (2004)) is a new type of dependence for random variables, which generalizes the well-known notion of exchangeability. In this paper, a class of random sequences, called Generalized Species Sampling Sequences, is defined and a condition to have conditional identity in distribution is given. Moreover, a class of generalized species sampling sequences that are conditionally identically distributed is introduced and studied: the Generalized Ottawa sequences (GOS). This class contains a '`randomly reinforced'' version of the Pólya urn and of the Bl…
Tree shape statistics provide valuable quantitative insights into evolutionary mechanisms underpinning phylogenetic trees, a commonly used graph representation of evolution systems ranging from viruses to species. By developing limit theorems for a version of extended Pólya urn models in which negative entries are permitted for their replacement matrices, we present strong laws of large numbers and central limit theorems for asymptotic joint distributions of two subtree counting statistics, the number of cherries and that of pitchforks, for random phylogenetic trees generated by two widely use…
The dynamics of a population undergoing selection is a central topic in evolutionary biology. This question is particularly intriguing in the case where selective forces act in opposing directions at two population scales. For example, a fast-replicating virus strain outcompetes slower-replicating strains at the within-host scale. However, if the fast-replicating strain causes host morbidity and is less frequently transmitted, it can be outcompeted by slower-replicating strains at the between-host scale. Here we consider a stochastic ball-and-urn process which models this type of phenomenon. W…
In the paper we study a measure version of the evolutionary nonlinear Boltzmann-type equation in which we admit a random number of collisions of particles. We consider first a stationary model and use two methods to find its fixed points: the first based on Zolotarev seminorm and the second on Kantorovich-Rubinstein maximum principle. Then a dynamic version of Boltzmann-type equation is considered and its asymptotical stability is shown.
We study a generalized discrete-time multi-type Wright-Fisher population process. The mean-field dynamics of the stochastic process is induced by a general replicator difference equation. We prove several results regarding the asymptotic behavior of the model, focusing on the impact of the mean-field dynamics on it. One of the results is a limit theorem that describes sufficient conditions for an almost certain path to extinction, first eliminating the type which is the least fit at the mean-field equilibrium. The effect is explained by the metastability of the stochastic system, which under t…
