We study the dynamics of generic unfoldings of saddle-node circle local diffeomorphisms from the measure theoretical point of view, obtaining statistical stability results for deterministic and random perturbations in these kind of one-parameter families.
In this paper, we consider a smooth arc of diffeomorphisms which has a saddle-node bifurcation inside a nontrivial invariant set which is a deformation of a horseshoe. We show that this saddle-node bifurcation is isolated, that is, its hyperbolicity is maintained before and after the saddle-node bifurcation. Moreover we construct a $C^2$-open set of arcs having the same property.
In this paper we study unfoldings of saddle-nodes and their Dulac time. By unfolding a saddle-node, saddles and nodes appear. In the first result (Theorem A) we prove uniform regularity by which orbits and their derivatives arrive at a node. Uniformity is with respect to all parameters including the unfolding parameter bringing the node to a saddle-node and a parameter belonging to a space of functions. In the second part, we apply this first result for proving a regularity result (Theorem B) on the Dulac time (time of Dulac map) of an unfolding of a saddle-node. This result is a building bloc…
We give unique analytic "normal forms" for germs of a holomorphic vector field of the complex plane in the neighborhood of an isolated singularity of saddle-node type having a convergent formal separatrix. We specifically address the problem of computing the normal form explicitly.
We study main bifurcations of multidimensional diffeomorphisms having a non-transversal homoclinic orbit to a saddle-node fixed point. On a parameter plane we build a bifurcation diagram for single-round periodic orbits lying entirely in a small neighbourhood of the homoclinic orbit. Also a relation of our results to well-known codimension one bifurcations of a saddle fixed point with a quadratic homoclinic tangency and a saddle-node fixed point with a transversal homoclinic orbit is discussed.
In this paper we study the bifurcations of a class of polycycles, called lips, occurring in generic three-parameter smooth families of vector fields on a Möbius band. The lips consists of a set of polycycles formed by two saddle-nodes, one attracting and the other repelling, connected by the hyperbolic separatrices of the saddle-nodes and by orbits interior to both nodal sectors. We determine, under certain genericity hypotheses, the maximum number of limits cycles that may bifurcate from a graphic belonging to the lips and we describe its bifurcation diagram.
In this paper we consider germs of k-parameter generic families of analytic 2-dimensional vector fields unfolding a saddle-node of codimension k and we give a complete modulus of analytic classification under orbital equivalence and a complete modulus of analytic classification under conjugacy. The modulus is an unfolding of the corresponding modulus for the vector field with the saddle-node. The point of view is to compare the family with a "model family" via an equivalence (conjugacy) over canonical sectors. This is done by studying the asymptotic homology of the leaves and its consequences …
We study the dynamics of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) model, under the Lennard-Jones force with non-linear damping, and harmonic forcing. We establish the bifurcation diagrams for equilibria in a conservative system. Particularly, we present conditions that guarantee the local existence of saddle-node bifurcations. By using the Melnikov method, the region in the space parameters where the persistence of homoclinic orbits is determined in a non-conservative system.
We study the geometric and topological properties of strange non-chaotic attractors created in non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations of quasiperiodically forced interval maps. By interpreting the attractors as limit objects of the iterates of a continuous curve and controlling the geometry of the latter, we determine their Hausdorff and box-counting dimension and show that these take distinct values. Moreover, the same approach allows to describe the topological structure of the attractors and to prove their minimality.
This article proposes an initiation to Écalle's mould calculus, a powerful combinatorial tool which yields surprisingly explicit formulas for the normalising series attached to an analytic germ of singular vector field. This is illustrated on the case of saddle-node singularities, generated by two-dimensional vector fields which are formally conjugate to Euler's vector field $x^2\frac{\pa}{\pa x}+(x+y)\frac{\pa}{\pa y}$, and for which the formal normalisation proves to be resurgent in $1/x$.
In this work, following [Bit15], we consider analytic singular vector fields in $(\mathbb{C}^{3},0)$ with an isolated and doubly-resonant singularity of saddle-node type at the origin. Such vector fields come from irregular two-dimensional differential systems with two opposite non-zero eigenvalues, and appear for instance when studying the irregular singularity at infinity in Painlev{é} equations (P\_j), j=I...V , for generic values of the parameters. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a theorem of analytic nor-malization over sectorial domains, analogous to the classical one due to Hukuhar…
This article is an introduction to some aspects of Écalle's mould calculus, a powerful combinatorial tool which yields surprisingly explicit formulas for the normalising series attached to an analytic germ of singular vector field or of map. This is illustrated on the case of the saddle-node, a two-dimensional vector field which is formally conjugate to Euler's vector field $x^2\frac{\pa}{\pa x}+(x+y)\frac{\pa}{\pa y}$, and for which the formal normalisation is shown to be resurgent in $1/x$. Resurgence monomials adapted to alien calculus are also described as another application of mould calc…
We consider the scalar delay differential equation $$ \dot{x}(t)=-x(t)+f_{K}(x(t-1)) $$ with a nondecreasing feedback function $f_{K}$ depending on a parameter $K$, and we verify that a saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbits takes place as $K$ varies. The nonlinearity $f_{K}$ is chosen so that it has two unstable fixed points (hence the dynamical system has two unstable equilibria), and these fixed points remain bounded away from each other as $K$ changes. The generated periodic orbits are of large amplitude in the sense that they oscillate about both unstable fixed points of $f_{K}$.
We examine the interaction of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations in a predator-prey-nutrient system that is stressed by the presence of a toxicant affecting the prey. This model, formulated by Kooi et al. ({\sl Ecol. Model.} {\bf 212}(2008), 304--318), has a two-dimensional invariant sub system with zero predator density. In the sub system, a pair of prey-nutrient equilibria is created in a saddle-node bifurcation, while predator invasion in modelled by a transcritical bifurcation of one of this pair. Interactions of these bifurcations at codimension-two points give rise to bistable, p…
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
In this work, following [Bit15] and [Bit16a], we consider analytic singular vector fields in $(\mathbb{C}^{3},0)$ with an isolated and doubly-resonant singularity of saddle-node type at the origin. Such vector fields come from irregular two-dimensional differential systems with two opposite non-zero eigenvalues, and appear for instance when studying the irregular singularity at infinity in Painlev{é} equations (P\_j), j=I...V , for generic values of the parameters. Under suitable assumptions, we provide an analytic classification under the action of fibered diffeomorphisms, based on the study …
In this work we consider formal singular vector fields in $ C^{3}$with an isolated and doubly-resonant singularity of saddle-node typeat the origin. Such vector fields come from irregular two-dimensionalsystems with two opposite non-zero eigenvalues, and appear for instancewhen studying the irregular singularity at infinity in Painlev{é} equations$(P\_{j})\_{j\in(I,II,III,IV,V)}$, for generic values of the parameters.Under generic assumptions we give a complete formal classificationfor the action of formal diffeomorphisms (by changes of coordinates)fixing the origin and fibered in the independ…
We show that a one-dimensional differential equation depending on a parameter $μ$ with a saddle-node bifurcation at $μ=0$ can be modelled by an extended normal form $\dot y = ν(μ)-y^2+a(μ)y^3$, where the functions $ν$ and $a$ are solutions to equations that can be written down explicitly. The equivalence to the original equations is a local differentiable conjugacy on the basins of attraction and repulsion of stationary points in the parameter region for which these exist, and is a differentiable conjugacy on the whole local interval otherwise. (Recall that in standard approaches local equival…
In this work, we consider germs of analytic singular vector elds in (C^3,0) with an isolated and doubly-resonant singularity of saddle-node type at the origin. Such vector elds come from irregular two-dimensional dierential systems with two opposite non-zero eigenvalues, and appear for instance when studying the irregular singularity at innity in Painlev{é} equations (P j) j=I,...,V for generic values of the parameters. Under suitable assumptions, we prove a theorem of analytic normalization over sectorial domains, analogous to the classical one due to Hukuhara-Kimura-Matuda for saddle-nodes i…
In this paper, we study the realizability problem for retarded functional differential equations near an equilibrium point undergoing a nonlinear mode interaction between a saddle-node bifurcation and a non-resonant multiple Hopf bifurcation. In contrast to the case of transcritical/multiple Hopf interaction which was studied in an earlier paper, the analysis here is complicated by the presence of a nilpotency which introduces a non-compact component in the symmetry group of the normal form. We present a framework to analyse the realizability problem in this non-semisimple case which exploits …
We give normal forms for generic k-dimensional parametric families $(Z_\varepsilon)_\varepsilon$ of germs of holomorphic vector fields near $0\in\mathbb{C}^2$ unfolding a saddle-node singularity $Z_0$, under the condition that there exists a family of invariant analytic curves unfolding the weak separatrix of $Z_0$. These normal forms provide a moduli space for these parametric families. In our former 2008 paper, a modulus of a family was given as the unfolding of the Martinet-Ramis modulus, but the realization part was missing. We solve the realization problem in that partial case and show th…
An in-depth analysis of nonautonomous bifurcations of saddle-node type for scalar differential equations $x'=-x^2+q(t)\,x+p(t)$, where $q\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ and $p\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ are bounded and uniformly continuous, is fundamental to explain the absence or occurrence of rate-induced tipping for the differential equation $y' =(y-(2/π)\arctan(ct))^2+p(t)$ as the rate $c$ varies on $[0,\infty)$. A classical attractor-repeller pair, whose existence for $c=0$ is assumed, may persist for any $c>0$, or disappear for a certain critical rate $c=c_0$, giving rise to rate-induc…
The saddle-node bifurcation on an invariant circle (SNIC) is one of the codimension-one routes to creation or destruction of a periodic orbit in a continuous-time dynamical system. It governs the transition from resting behaviour to periodic spiking in many class I neurons, for example. Here, as a first step towards theory of networks of such units the effect of weak coupling between two systems with a SNIC is analysed. Two crucial parameters of the coupling are identified, which we call δ_1 and δ_2. Global bifurcation diagrams are obtained here for the "mutualistic" case δ_1 δ_2 > 0. Accordin…
We propose a general mechanism by which strange non-chaotic attractors (SNA) are created during the collision of invariant curves in quasiperiodically forced systems. This mechanism is first discussed on an heuristic level and by means of simulations. In the considered examples, a stable and an unstable invariant circle undergo a saddle-node bifurcation, but instead of a neutral invariant curve there exists a strange non-chaotic attractor-repeller pair at the bifurcation point. This process is accompanied by a very characteristic behaviour of the invariant curves prior to their collision, whic…
We obtain a parametric normal form for any non-degenerate perturbation of the generalized saddle-node case of Bogdanov--Takens singularity. Explicit formulas are derived and greatly simplified for an efficient implementation in any computer algebra system. A Maple program is prepared for an automatic parametric normal form computation. A section is devoted to present some practical formulas which avoid technical details of the paper.
The scaling of the time delay near a "bottleneck" of a generic saddle-node bifurcation is well-known to be given by an inverse square-root law. We extend the analysis to several non-generic cases for smooth vector fields. We proceed to investigate $C^0$ vector fields. Our main result is a new phenomenon in two-parameter families having a saddle-node bifurcation upon changing the first parameter. We find distinct scalings for different values of the second parameter ranging from power laws with exponents in (0,1) to scalings given by O(1). We illustrate this rapid quantitative change of the sca…
Non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations give rise to minimal sets of interesting geometry built of so-called strange non-chaotic attractors. We show that certain families of quasiperiodically driven logistic differential equations undergo a non-smooth bifurcation. By a previous result on the occurrence of non-smooth bifurcations in forced discrete time dynamical systems, this yields that within the class of families of quasiperiodically driven differential equations, non-smooth saddle-node bifurcations occur in a set with non-empty C2-interior.
A topological classification of many classes of dynamical systems with regular dynamics in low dimensions is often reduced to combinatorial invariants. In dimension 3 combinatorial invariants are proved to be insufficient even for simplest Morse-Smale diffeomorphisms. The complete topological invariant for the systems with a single saddle point on the 3-sphere is the embedding of the homotopy non-trivial knot into the manifold $\mathbb S^2\times\mathbb S^1$. If a diffeomorphism has several saddle points their unstable separatrices form arcs frames in the basin of the sink and circles frame in …
We study the interaction of saddle-node and transcritical bifurcations in a Lotka-Volterra model with a constant term representing harvesting or migration. Because some of the equilibria of the model lie on an invariant coordinate axis, both the saddle-node and the transcritical bifurcations are of codimension one. Their interaction can be associated with either a single or a double zero eigenvalue. We show that in the former case, the local bifurcation diagram is given by a nonversal unfolding of the cusp bifurcation whereas in the latter case it is a nonversal unfolding of a degenerate Bogda…
We discuss one parameter families of unimodal maps, with negative Schwarzian derivative, unfolding a saddle-node bifurcation. It was previously shown that for a parameter set of positive Lebesgue density at the bifurcation, the maps possess attracting periodic orbits of high period. We show that there is also a parameter set of positive density at the bifurcation, for which the maps exhibit absolutely continuous invariant measures which are supported on the largest possible interval. We prove that these measures converge weakly to an atomic measure supported on the orbit of the saddle-node poi…
There is a growing awareness that catastrophic phenomena in biology and medicine can be mathematically represented in terms of saddle-node bifurcations. In particular, the term `tipping', or critical transition has in recent years entered the discourse of the general public in relation to ecology, medicine, and public health. The saddle-node bifurcation and its associated theory of catastrophe as put forth by Thom and Zeeman has seen applications in a wide range of fields including molecular biophysics, mesoscopic physics, and climate science. In this paper, we investigate a simple model of a …
In this article we present the influence of a Hamiltonian saddle-node bifurcation on the high-dimensional phase space structures that mediate reaction dynamics. To achieve this goal, we identify the phase space invariant manifolds using Lagrangian descriptors, which is a trajectory-based diagnostic suitable for the construction of a complete ``phase space tomography'' by means of analyzing dynamics on low-dimensional slices. First, we build a Hamiltonian system with one degree-of-freedom (DoF) that models reaction, and study the effect of adding a parameter to the potential energy function tha…
By applying a singular perturbation approach, canard limit cycles exhibited by a general family of singularly perturbed planar piecewise linear (PWL) differential systems are analyzed. The performed study involves both hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic canard limit cycles appearing after both a supercritical and a subcritical Hopf bifurcation. The obtained results are completely comparable with those obtained for smooth vector fields. In some sense, the manuscript can be understood as an extension towards the PWL framework of the results obtained for smooth systems by Krupa and Szmolyan [18]. In a…
In this paper, we study the quantum dynamics of a one degree-of-freedom (DOF) Hamiltonian that is a normal form for a saddle node bifurcation of equilibrium points in phase space. The Hamiltonian has the form of the sum of kinetic energy and potential energy. The bifurcation parameter is in the potential energy function and its effect on the potential energy is to vary the depth of the potential well. The main focus is to evaluate the effect of the depth of the well on the quantum dynamics. This evaluation is carried out through the computation of energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the tim…
We study the effect of external forcing on the saddle-node bifurcation pattern of interval maps. By replacing fixed points of unperturbed maps by invariant graphs, we obtain direct analogues to the classical result both for random forcing by measure-preserving dynamical systems and for deterministic forcing by homeomorphisms of compact metric spaces. Additional assumptions like ergodicity or minimality of the forcing process then yield further information about the dynamics. The main difference to the unforced situation is that at the critical bifurcation parameter, two alternatives exist. In …
In this report, we consider a semi-infinite discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation driven at one edge by a driving force. The equation models the dynamics of coupled waveguide arrays. When the frequency of the forcing is in the allowed-band of the system, there will be a linear transmission of energy through the lattice. Yet, if the frequency is in the upper forbidden band, then there is a critical driving amplitude for a nonlinear tunneling, which is called supratransmission, of energy to occur. Here, we discuss mathematically the mechanism and the source of the supratransmission. By analyzi…

A predator-prey model with functional response Holling type II, Allee effect in the prey and a generalist predator is considered. It is shown that the model with strong Allee effect has at most two positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other exhibits multi-stability phenomenon since the equilibrium point can be stable or unstable. While the model with weak Allee effect has at most three positive equilibrium point in the first quadrant, one is always a saddle point and the other two can be stable or unstable node. In addition, when the parameters…
Let p be a saddle fixed point for an orientation-preserving surface diffeomorphism f admitting a homoclinic point q. Let V be an open 2-cell bounded by a simple loop formed by two arcs joining p to q lying respectively in the stable and unstable curves at p. It is shown that f|V has fixed point index 1 or 2 depending only on the geometry of V near p.
In this study, we analyze how changes in the geometry of a potential energy surface in terms of depth and flatness can affect the reaction dynamics. We formulate depth and flatness in the context of one and two degree-of-freedom (DOF) Hamiltonian normal form for the saddle-node bifurcation and quantify their influence on chemical reaction dynamics. In a recent work, García-Garrido, Naik, and Wiggins illustrated how changing the well-depth of a potential energy surface (PES) can lead to a saddle-node bifurcation. They have shown how the geometry of cylindrical manifolds associated with the rank…
In this paper we present a general approach to rigorously validate Hopf bifurcations as well as saddle-node bifurcations of periodic orbits in systems of ODEs. By a combination of analytic estimates and computer-assisted calculations, we follow solution curves of cycles through folds, checking along the way that a single nondegenerate saddle-node bifurcation occurs. Similarly, we rigorously continue solution curves of cycles starting from their onset at a Hopf bifurcation. We use a blowup analysis to regularize the continuation problem near the Hopf bifurcation point. This extends the applicab…
Chimera state is a recently discovered dynamical phenomenon in arrays of nonlocally coupled oscillators, that displays a self-organized spatial pattern of co-existing coherence and incoherence. We discuss the appearance of the chimera states in networks of phase oscillators with attractive and with repulsive interactions, i.e. when the coupling respectively favors synchronization or works against it. By systematically analyzing the dependence of the spatiotemporal dynamics on the level of coupling attractivity/repulsivity and the range of coupling, we uncover that different types of chimera st…
Three-dimensional convex bodies can be classified in terms of the number and stability types of critical points on which they can balance at rest on a horizontal plane. For typical bodies these are nondegenerate maxima, minima, and saddle-points, the numbers of which provide a primary classification. Secondary and tertiary classifications use graphs to describe orbits connecting these critical points in the gradient vector field associated with each body. In previous work it was shown that these classifications are complete in that no class is empty. Here we construct 1- and 2-parameter famili…
