Recently the author used certain quaternion orders to demonstrate the universality of some quaternary quadratic forms. Here a further study is done on one of these orders analogous to Hurwitz's proof of the formula for the number of representations of a positive integer by sums of four squares using quaternions. The result is the formula for the number of representations of a positive integer by one of the above mentioned quaternary quadratic forms.
Quadratic forms over Z that represent all positive integers are called universal. Starting with Ramanujan, 54 universal quaternary quadratic forms without cross product terms were discovered. The form that is the sum of four squares was proved universal by Hurwitz using a special ring of quaternions. Here seven other quaternary quadratic forms are shown universal by investigation of appropriate rings of quaternions.
We make some corrections to Nipp's tables of positive definite integral quaternary quadratic forms. They only affect $p$-adic densities and $p$-adic Jordan splittings in the Appendix of Nipp's book. There are no errors found in Nipp's list of quaternary forms for each genus.
We determine explicit formulas for the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by quaternary quadratic forms with coefficients $1$, $2$, $5$ or $10$. We use a modular forms approach.
In this paper we consider certain quaternary quadratic forms and octonary quadratic forms and by using the theory of modular forms, we find formulae for the number of representations of a positive integer by these quadratic forms.
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form $f$ is said to be $\textit{universal}$ if it represents all positive integers, and is said to be $\textit{primitively universal}$ if it represents all positive integers primitively. We also say $f$ is $\textit{primitively almost universal}$ if it represents almost all positive integers primitively. Conway and Schneeberger proved (see [1]) that there are exactly $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic forms. Recently, Earnest and Gunawardana proved in [4] that among $204$ equivalence classes of universal quaternary quadratic …
Let $f$ be a positive definite (non-classic) integral quaternary quadratic form. We say $f$ is strongly $s$-regular if it satisfies a regularity property on the number of representations of squares of integers. In this article, we prove that there are only finitely many strongly $s$-regular quaternary quadratic forms up to isometry if the minimum of the nonzero squares that are represented by the quadratic form is fixed. Furthermore, we show that there are exactly $34$ strongly $s$-regular diagonal quaternary quadratic forms representing one (see Table $1$). In particular, we use eta-quotients…
We relate proper isometry classes of maximal lattices in a totally definite quaternary quadratic space (V,q) with trivial discriminant to certain equivalence classes of ideals in the quaternion algebra representing the Clifford invariant of (V,q). This yields a good algorithm to enumerate a system of representatives of proper isometry classes of lattices in genera of maximal lattices in (V,q).
A quadratic form has a one-class spinor genus if its spinor genus consists of a single equivalence class. In this paper, we determine that there is only one primitive quaternary genus which has a one-class spinor genus but not a one-class genus. In all other cases, the genera of primitive quaternary lattices either have a genus and spinor genus which coincide, or the the genus splits into multiple spinor genera, which in turn split into multiple equivalence classes.
In this article we show that the form $x^2 + iy^2 + z^2 + iw^2$ represents all gaussian integers. The main tools used in this proof are Fermat's little theorem (over finite field extensions), the Mordell-Niven theorem (representation of some gaussians), and the generalized Euler-identity over finite field extensions.
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with prime discriminant. We give an explicit lower bound on the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by $Q$. This problem is connected with deriving an upper bound on the Petersson norm $\langle C, C \rangle$ of the cuspidal part of the theta series of $Q$. We derive an upper bound on $\langle C, C \rangle$ that depends on the smallest positive integer not represented by the dual form $Q^{*}$. In addition, we give a non-trivial upper bound on the sum of the integers $n$ excepted by $Q$.
In this paper, we determine all the positive integers $a, b$ and $c$ such that every nonnegative integer can be represented as $$ f^{a,b}_c(x,y,z,w)=ax^2+by^2+c(z^2+zw+w^2) \,\, \textrm{with} \,\,x,y,z,w\in\mathbb{Z}. $$ Furthermore, we prove that $f^{a,b}_c$ can represent all the nonnegative integers if it represents $n=1,2,3,5,6,10.$
In this paper, we find a basis for the space of modular forms of weight $2$ on $Γ_1(48)$. We use this basis to find formulas for the number of representations of a positive integer $n$ by certain quaternary quadratic forms of the form $\sum_{i=1}^4 a_i x_i^2$, $\sum_{i=1}^2 b_i(x_{2i-1}^2 + x_{2i-1}x_{2i}+x_{2i}^2)$ and $a_1x_1^2 + a_2 x_2^2 + b_1(x_3^2+x_3x_4+x_4^2)$, where $a_i$'s belong to $\{1,2,3,4,6,12\}$ and $b_i$'s belong to $\{1,2,4,8,16\}$.
Let $-d$ be a a negative discriminant and let $T$ vary over a set of representatives of the integral equivalence classes of integral binary quadratic forms of discriminant $-d$. We prove an asymptotic formula for $d \to \infty$ for the average over $T$ of the number of representations of $T$ by an integral positive definite quaternary quadratic form and obtain results on averages of Fourier coefficients of linear combinations of Siegel theta series. We also find an asymptotic bound from below on the number of binary forms of fixed discriminant $-d$ which are represented by a given quaternary f…

We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^…
We study "quadratic periods" on quaternionic Shimura varieties and formulate an integral refinement of Shimura's conjecture regarding Petersson inner products of automorphic forms that are related by the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence. The main result is that this integral refinement is implied by another conjecture (Conjecture D below) regarding integrality of theta lifts between certain quaternionic unitary groups.
We show that the density of quadratic forms in $n$ variables over ${\mathbb Z}_p$ that are isotropic is a rational function in $p$, where the rational function is independent of $p$, and we determine this rational function explicitly. As a consequence, for each $n$, we determine the probability that a random integral quadratic form in $n$ variables is isotropic. In particular, we show that the probability that a random integral quaternary quadratic form is isotropic is $\approx 97.0\%$, in the case where the coefficients of the quadratic form are independently and uniformly distributed in the …
Rigid meromorphic cocycles were introduced by Darmon and Vonk as a conjectural $p$-adic extension of the theory of singular moduli to real quadratic base fields. They are certain cohomology classes of $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ which can be evaluated at real quadratic irrationalities and the values thus obtained are conjectured to lie in algebraic extensions of the base field. In this article we present a similar construction of cohomology casses in which $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}[1/p])$ is replaced by an order in an indefinite quaternion algebra over a totally real number field $F$. The…
An integral quadratic form is called strictly $n$-regular if it primitively represents all quadratic forms in $n$ variables that are primitively represented by its genus. For any $n \geq 2$, it will be shown that there are only finitely many similarity classes of positive definite strictly $n$-regular integral quadratic forms in $n + 4$ variables. This extends the recent finiteness results for strictly regular quaternary quadratic forms by Earnest-Kim-Meyer (2014).
In a recent paper, Castella and Hsieh proved results for Selmer groups associated with Galois representations attached to newforms twisted by Hecke characters of an imaginary quadratic field. These results are obtained under the so-called Heegner hypothesis that the imaginary quadratic field satisfies with respect to the level of the modular form. In particular, Castella and Hsieh prove the rank 0 case of the Bloch-Kato conjecture for $L$-functions of modular forms in their setting. The key point of the work of Castella and Hsieh is a remarkable link between generalized Heegner cycles and $p$-…
A (positive definite and integral) quadratic form is said to be $\textit{prime-universal}$ if it represents all primes. Recently, Doyle and Williams in [2] classified all prime-universal diagonal ternary quadratic forms, and all prime-universal diagonal quaternary quadratic forms under two conjectures proposed by themselves. In this article, we classify all prime-universal diagonal quadratic forms regardless of ranks. Furthermore, we prove, so called, $67$-Theorem for a diagonal quadratic form to be prime-universal.
We develop a theory of $p$-adic continued fractions for a quaternion algebra $B$ over $\mathbb Q$ ramified at a rational prime $p$. Many properties holding in the commutative case can be proven also in this setting. In particular, we focus our attention on the characterization of elements having a finite continued fraction expansion. By means of a suitable notion of quaternionic height, we prove a criterion for finiteness. Furthermore, we draw some consequences about the solutions of a family of quadratic polynomial equations with coefficients in $B$.
Darmon points on p-adic tori and Jacobians of Shimura curves over Q were introduced in previous joint works with Rotger as generalizations of Darmon's Stark-Heegner points. In this article we study the algebraicity over extensions of a real quadratic field K of the projections of Darmon points to elliptic curves. More precisely, we prove that linear combinations of Darmon points on elliptic curves weighted by certain genus characters of K are rational over the predicted genus fields of K. This extends to an arbitrary quaternionic setting the main theorem on the rationality of Stark-Heegner poi…
We consider the problem of classifying all positive-definite integer-valued quadratic forms that represent all positive odd integers. Kaplansky considered this problem for ternary forms, giving a list of 23 candidates, and proving that 19 of those represent all positive odds. (Jagy later dealt with a 20th candidate.) Assuming that the remaining three forms represent all positive odds, we prove that an arbitrary, positive-definite quadratic form represents all positive odds if and only if it represents the odd numbers from 1 up to 451. This result is analogous to Bhargava and Hanke's celebrated…
This paper treats certain integral lattices with respect to ternary quadratic forms, which are obtained from the data of a non-zero element and a maximal lattice in a quaternary quadratic space. Such a lattice can be described by means of an order associated with the lattice in the even Clifford algebra of the ternary form. This provides a correspondence between the genus of the lattice and that of the order.
In a series of papers, published in Mathematische Annalen, Bianchi and Blumenthal introduced the notions of Bianchi orbifolds and Hilbert-Blumnethal surfaces as generalizations of modular curves associated to quadratic fields. In this paper, in the same spirit, and following a similar line of reasoning, we introduce the concept of Bianchi and Hilbert-Blumenthal quaternionic orbifolds as generalizations of the Lipschitz and Hurwitz quaternionic modular orbifolds defined recently by Díaz, Vlacci and the first author. In particular, we describe the cusp cross-sections of the Hilbert-Blumenthal qu…
Su et al. proposed several new classes of quaternary sequences of even length with optimal autocorrelation interleaved by twin-prime sequences pairs, GMW sequences pairs or binary cyclotomic sequences of order four in \cite{S1}. In this paper, we determine the 4-adic complexity of these quaternary sequences with period $2n$ by using correlation function and the "Gauss periods" of order four and "quadratic Gauss sums" on finite field $\mathbb{F}_n$ and valued in $\mathbb{Z}^{*}_{4^{2n}-1}$. Our results show that they are safe enough to resist the attack of the rational approximation algorithm.
Fix a quadratic order over the ring of integers. An embedding of the quadratic order into a quaternionic order naturally gives an integral binary hermitian form over the quadratic order. We show that, in certain cases, this correspondence is a discriminant preserving bijection between the isomorphism classes of embeddings and integral binary hermitian forms.
Let $Q$ be a positive-definite quaternary quadratic form with integer coefficients. We study the problem of giving bounds on the largest positive integer $n$ that is locally represented by $Q$ but not represented. Assuming that $n$ is relatively prime to $D(Q)$, the determinant of the Gram matrix of $Q$, we show that $n$ is represented provided that \[ n \gg \max \{ N(Q)^{3/2 + ε} D(Q)^{5/4 + ε}, N(Q)^{2 + ε} D(Q)^{1 + ε} \}. \] Here $N(Q)$ is the level of $Q$. We give three other bounds that hold under successively weaker local conditions on $n$. These results are proven by bounding the Peter…
We show that the density of quadratic forms in $n$ variables over $\mathbb Z_p$ that are isotropic is a rational function of $p$, where the rational function is independent of $p$, and we determine this rational function explicitly. When real quadratic forms in $n$ variables are distributed according to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory, we determine explicitly the probability that a random such real quadratic form is isotropic (i.e., indefinite). As a consequence, for each $n$, we determine an exact expression for the probability that a random integral quadratic f…
Let $S \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ be finite. Is there a positive definite quadratic form that fails to represent only those elements in $S$? For $S = \emptyset$, this was solved (for classically integral forms) by the $15$-Theorem of Conway-Schneeberger in the early 1990s and (for all integral forms) by the $290$-Theorem of Bhargava-Hanke in the mid-2000s. In 1938 Halmos attempted to list all weighted sums of four squares that failed to represent $S=\{m\}$; of his $88$ candidates, he could provide complete justifications for all but one. In the same spirit, we ask, "for which $S = \{m, n\}$ does th…
In this article, we study the representability of integers as sums of pentagonal numbers, where a pentagonal number is an integer of the form $P_5(x)=\frac{3x^2-x}{2}$ for some non-negative integer $x$. In particular, we prove the "pentagonal theorem of $63$", which states that a sum of pentagonal numbers represents every non-negative integer if and only if it represents the integers $1$, $2$, $3$, $4$, $6$, $7$, $8$, $9$, $11$, $13$, $14$, $17$, $18$, $19$, $23$, $28$, $31$, $33$, $34$, $39$, $42$, and $63$. We also introduce a method to obtain a generalized version of Cauchy's lemma using re…

In 1855 H. J. S. Smith proved Fermat's two-square using the notion of palindromic continuants. In his paper, Smith constructed a proper representation of a prime number $p$ as a sum of two squares, given a solution of $z^2+1\equiv0\pmod{p}$, and vice versa. In this paper, we extend the use of continuants to proper representations by sums of two squares in rings of polynomials on fields of characteristic different from 2. New deterministic algorithms for finding the corresponding proper representations are presented. Our approach will provide a new constructive proof of the four-square theorem …
Let $r_Q(n)$ be the representation number of a nonnegative integer $n$ by the quaternary quadratic form $Q=x_1^2+2x_2^2+x_3^2+x_4^2+x_1x_3+x_1x_4+x_2x_4$. We first prove the identity $r_Q(p^2n)=r_Q(p^2)r_Q(n)/r_Q(1)$ for any prime $p$ different from 13 and any positive integer $n$ prime to $p$, which was conjectured in [Eum et al, A modularity criterion for Klein forms, with an application to modular forms of level 13, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 375 (2011), 28--41]. And, we explicitly determine a concise formula for the number $r_Q(n^2)$ as well for any integer $n$.
A positive definite quadratic form is called perfect, if it is uniquely determined by its arithmetical minimum and the integral vectors attaining it. In this self-contained survey we explain how to enumerate perfect forms in $d$ variables up to arithmetical equivalence and scaling. We put an emphasis on practical issues concerning computer assisted enumerations. For the necessary theory of Voronoi we provide complete proofs based on Ryshkov polyhedra. This allows a very natural generalization to $T$-perfect forms, which are perfect with respect to a linear subspace $T$ in the space of quadrati…
