In this paper we deduce a universal result about the asymptotic distribution of roots of random polynomials, which can be seen as a complement to an old and famous result of Erdos and Turan. More precisely, given a sequence of random polynomials, we show that, under some very general conditions, the roots tend to cluster near the unit circle, and their angles are uniformly distributed. The method we use is deterministic: in particular, we do not assume independence or equidistribution of the coefficients of the polynomial.
We solve the weighted energy problem on the unit circle, by finding the extremal measure and describing its support. Applications to polynomial and exponential weights are also included.
In the present paper we introduce analogs of almost periodic functions on the unit circle. We study certain uniform algebras generated by such functions, prove corona theorems for them and describe their maximal ideal spaces.
A Bl-packing is a (branched) circle packing that ``properly covers'' the unit disc. We establish some fundamental properties of such packings. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for their existence, prove their uniqueness, and show that their underlying surfaces, known as carriers, are quasiconformally equivalent to surfaces of classical Blaschke products. We also extend our earlier approximation results of to general combinatorial patterns of tangencies in Bl-packings. Finally, a branched version of the Discrete Uniformization Theorem of Beardon and Stephenson is given.
It is well known that every Hoelder-continuous function on the unit circle is the sum of two functions such that one of these two functions extends holomorphically into the unit disc and the other extends holomorphically into the complement of the unit disc. In the paper we prove that an analogue of this holds for Hoelder-continuous functions on an annulus A which have zero averages on all circles contained in A which surround the hole.
This paper defines the notion of generators for a class of decreasing radial Loewner chains which are only continuous with respect to time. For this purpose, "Loewner's integral equation" which generalizes Loewner's differential equation is defined and analyzed. The definition of generators is motivated by the Lévy-Khintchine representation for additive processes on the unit circle. Actually, we can and do introduce a homeomorphism between the above class of Loewner chains and the set of the distributions of increments of additive processes equipped with suitable topologies. On the other hand,…
Let $φ=\{φ_k\}_{k=-\infty}^\infty$ denote the extended Takenaka--Malmquist system on unit circle $\mathbb T$ and let $σ_{n,φ}(f),$ $f\in L^1(\mathbb T)$, be the Fejér-type operator based on $φ$, introduced by V. N. Rusak. We give the convergence criteria for $σ_{n,φ}(f)$ in Banach space $X(\mathbb T):=L^p(\mathbb T)\vee C(\mathbb T)$, $p\ge 1$. Also we prove the Voronovskaya-type theorem for $σ_{n,φ}(f)$ on class of holomorphic functions representable by Cauchy-type integrals with bounded densities.
In signal processing the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials have good autocorrelation properties and their values on the unit circle are small. Binary sequences with low autocorrelation coefficients are of interest in radar, sonar, and communication systems. In this paper we study the oscillation of the modulus of the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials on the unit circle. We also show that the Rudin-Shapiro polynomials $P_k$ and $Q_k$ of degree $n-1$ with $n := 2^k$ have $o(n)$ zeros on the unit circle. This should be compared with a result of B. Conrey, A. Granville, B. Poonen, and K. Soundararajan stating tha…
It is proven that for any system of n points z_1, ..., z_n on the (complex) unit circle, there exists another point z of norm 1, such that $$\sum 1/|z-z_k|^2 \leq n^2/4.$$ Equality holds iff the point system is a rotated copy of the nth unit roots. Two proofs are presented: one uses a characterisation of equioscillating rational functions, while the other is based on Bernstein's inequality.
We exclude the existence of frequently hypercyclic operators that have a spectrum contained in the closed unit disc and that intersects the unit circle in only finitely many points under certain additional conditions. This extends a result of S. Shkarin, which states that the spectrum of a frequently hypercyclic operator cannot have isolated points.
Let U be the closed unit disc in C and let p be a point on the unit circle. Let f be a continuous function on U which extends holomorphically from each circle contained in U and centered at the origin, and from each circle contained in U and passing through the point p. Then f is holomorphic in the interior of U.
We present a sufficient condition for a self-inversive polynomial to have a fixed number of roots on the complex unit circle. We also prove that these roots are simple when that condition is satisfied. This generalizes the condition found by Lakatos and Losonczi for all the roots of a self-inversive polynomial to lie on the complex unit circle.
For random polynomials with i.i.d. (independent and identically distribu-ted) zeros following any common probability distribution $μ$ with support contained in the unit circle, the empirical measures of the zeros of their first and higher order derivatives will be proved to converge weakly to $μ$ a.s. (almost sure(ly)). This, in particular, completes a recent work of Subramanian on the first order derivative case where $μ$ was assumed to be non-uniform. The same a.s. weak convergence will also be shown for polar and Sz.-Nagy's generalized derivatives, on some mild conditions.
We give several descriptions of positive quadrature formulas which are exact for trigonometric -, respectively, Laurent polynomials of degree less or equal $n-1-m$, $0\leq m\leq n-1$. A complete and simple description is obtained with the help of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In particular it is shown that the nodes polynomial can be generated by a simple recurrence relation. As a byproduct interlacing properties of zeros of para-orthogonal polynomials are obtained. Finally, asymptotics for the quadrature weights are presented.
Define $S(n,β)$ to be the set of complex polynomials of degree $n \ge 2$ with all roots in the unit disk and at least one root at $β$. For a polynomial $P$, define $|P|_β$ to be the distance between $β$ and the closest root of the derivative $P'$. Finally, define $r_n(β)=\sup \{|P|_β: P \in S(n,β) \}$. In this notation, a conjecture of Bl. Sendov claims that $r_n(β) \le 1$. In this paper we investigate Sendov's conjecture near the unit circle, by computing constants $C_1$ and $C_2$ (depending only on $n$) such that $r_n(β) \sim 1 + C_1 (1-|β|) + C_2 (1-|β|)^2$ for $|β|$ near 1. We also conside…
We interpolate a new family of Teichmüller spaces $T_{\sharp}^X$ between the universal Teichmüller space $T$ and its little subspace $T_0$, which we call the Teichmüller space of piecewise symmetric homeomorphisms. This is defined by prescribing a subset $X$ of the unit circle. The inclusion relation of $X$ induces a natural inclusion of $T_{\sharp}^X$, and an approximation of $T$ is given by an increasing sequence of $T_{\sharp}^X$. In this paper, we discuss the fundamental properties of $T_{\sharp}^X$ from the viewpoint of the quasiconformal theory of Teichmüller spaces. We also consider the…
Weighted Fekete points are defined as those that maximize the weighted version of the Vandermonde determinant over a fixed set. They can also be viewed as the equilibrium distribution of the unit discrete charges in an external electrostatic field. While these points have many applications, they are very difficult to find explicitly, and are only known in a few (unweighted) classical cases. We give two rare explicit examples of weighted Fekete points. The first one is for the weights $w(x)=|x-ai|^{-s}$ on the real line, with $s\ge 1$ and $a\neq 0,$ while the second is for the weights $w(z)=1/|…
The main aim of this paper is to establish the connection between well-known criteria for the pseudocontinuability of a non-inner Schur function Theta in the unit disk. In a canonical way we associate a probability measure mu on the unit circle with Theta. One of the two criteria will be reformulated in the face of mu, whereas the other one is drafted in view of a completely non--unitary contraction T having Theta as its corresponding characteristic function. Our main result clarifies an immediate connection between the above-mentioned two criteria. For this reason, we construct a special orth…
We give a Schinzel-Zassenhaus-type lower bound for the maximum modulus of roots of a monic integer polynomial with all roots symmetric with respect to the unit circle. Our results extend a recent work of Dimitrov, who proved the general Schinzel-Zassenhaus conjecture by using the Pólya rationality theorem for a power series with integer coefficients, and some estimates for logarithmic capacity (transfinite diameter) of sets. We use an enhancement of Pólya's result obtained by Robinson, which involves Laurent-type rational functions with small supremum norms, thereby replacing the logarithmic c…
Several conditions are known for a self-inversive polynomial that ascertain the location of its roots, and we present a framework for comparison of those conditions. We associate a parametric family of polynomials $p_α$ to each such polynomial $p$, and define $\mathscr{cn}(p)$, $\mathscr{il}(p)$ to be the sharp threshold values of $α$ that guarantee that, for all larger values of the parameter, $p_α$ has, respectively, all roots in the unit circle and all roots interlacing the roots of unity of the same degree. Interlacing implies circle rootedness, hence $\mathscr{il}(p)\geq\mathscr{cn}(p)$, …
The classical problem of counting the number of real zeros of a real polynomial was solved a long time ago by Sturm. The analogous problem of counting the number of zeros that a polynomial has on the unit circle is, however, still an open problem. In this paper, we show that the second problem can be reduced to the first one through the use of a suitable pair of Möbius transformations - often called Cayley transformations - that have the property of mapping the unit circle onto the real line and vice versa. Although the method applies to arbitrary complex polynomials, we discuss in detail seve…
We consider matrix functions with certain invariance under inversion in the unit circle. If such a function satisfies a positivity assumption on the unit circle, then only zero partial indices appear in its Riemann-Hilbert (Wiener-Hopf) factorization. It implies the unique solvability of a certain class of Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems. It includes the ones associated with the inverse scattering transform of the focusing/defocusing integrable discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations.
