Let GL_1(R) be the units of a commutative ring spectrum R. In this paper we identify the composition BGL_1(R)->K(R)->THH(R)->Ω^{\infty}(R), where K(R) is the algebraic K-theory and THH(R) the topological Hochschild homology of R. As a corollary we show that classes in π_{i-1}(R) not annihilated by the stable Hopf map give rise to non-trivial classes in K_i(R) for i\geq 3.
Let $G_k$ be a split algebraic group over $k$. Given a non-trivial $G_k$-torsor $G$, we consider the (twisted) flag variety $F=G/B_k$ for the Borel subgroup $B_k$ containing in $G_k$. The purpose of this paper is the study how to compute the Chow rings $CH^*(F)$ for various $F$ over some extension fields $K$ of $k$.
Equipping a non-equivariant topological E_\infty operad with the trivial G-action gives an operad in G-spaces. The algebra structure encoded by this operad in G-spectra is characterised homotopically by having no non-trivial multiplicative norms. Algebras over this operad are called naive-commutative ring G-spectra. In this paper we let G be a finite group and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational G-spectra model the rational naive-commutative ring G-spectra.
A group action on the input ring or category induces an action on the algebraic $K$-theory spectrum. However, a shortcoming of this naive approach to equivariant algebraic $K$-theory is, for example, that the map of spectra with $G$-action induced by a $G$-map of $G$-rings is not equivariant. We define a version of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory which encodes a group action on the input in a functorial way to produce a $genuine$ algebraic $K$-theory $G$-spectrum for a finite group $G$. The main technical work lies in studying coherent actions on the input category. A payoff of our approach i…
Equipping a non-equivariant topological $E_\infty$-operad with the trivial $G$-action gives an operad in $G$-spaces. For a $G$-spectrum, being an algebra over this operad does not provide any multiplicative norm maps on homotopy groups. Algebras over this operad are called naïve-commutative ring $G$-spectra. In this paper we take $G=SO(2)$ and we show that commutative algebras in the algebraic model for rational $SO(2)$-spectra model rational naïve-commutative ring $SO(2)$-spectra. In particular, this applies to show that the $SO(2)$-equivariant cohomology associated to an elliptic curve $C$ f…
The purpose of this paper is to present a simple and explicit construction of the Bokstedt-Hsiang-Madsen cyclotomic trace relating algebraic K-theory and topological cyclic homology. Our construction also incorporates Goodwillie's idea of a global cyclotomic trace.
We show that the category of rational G-spectra for a torus G is Quillen equivalent to an explicit small and practical algebraic model, thereby providing a universal de Rham model for rational G-equivariant cohomology theories. The result builds on the first author's Adams spectral sequence, the second author's functors making rational spectra algebraic. There are several steps, some perhaps of wider interest (1) isotropy separation (replacing the category of G-spectra by modules over a diagram of isotropically simple ring G-spectra) (2) passage to fixed points on ring and module categories (r…
We analyze Weierstrass cycles and tautological rings in moduli space of smooth algebraic curves and in moduli spaces of integral algebraic curves with embedded disks with special attention to moduli spaces of curves having genus $\leq 6$. In particular, we show that our general formula gives a good estimate for the dimension of Weierstrass cycles for lower genera.
In this paper we study the structure of the Algebraic Cobordism ring of a variety as a module over the Lazard ring, and show that it has relations in positive codimensions. We actually prove the stronger graded version. This extends the result of M.Levine-F.Morel claiming that this module has generators in non-negative codimensions. As an application we compute the Algebraic Cobordism ring of a curve. The main tool is Symmetric Operations in Algebraic Cobordism.
We develop a version of controlled algebra for simplicial rings. This generalizes the methods which lead to successful proofs of the algebraic K- theory isomorphism conjecture (Farrell-Jones Conjecture) for a large class of groups. This is the first step to prove the algebraic K-theory isomorphism conjecture for simplicial rings. We construct a category of controlled simplicial modules, show that it has the structure of a Waldhausen category and discuss its algebraic K-theory. We lay emphasis on detailed proofs. Highlights include the discussion of a simplicial cylinder functor, the gluing lem…
We formulate a version of Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture for an arbitrary structured ring spectrum $R$, and prove it whenever $π_*R$ is Noetherian. As an application, these results provide a new local-to-global principle in the modular representation theory of finite groups.
We develop homotopical algebraic geometry (see math.AG/0207028) in the special context where the base symmetric monoidal model category is the category S of spectra, i.e. what might be called, after Waldhausen, ``brave new algebraic geometry''. We discuss various model topologies on the model category of commutative algebras in S, the associated theories of geometric S-stacks (a geometric S-stack being an analog of Artin notion of algebraic stack in Algebraic Geometry), and finally show how to define global moduli spaces of associative ring spectra structures and a moduli space related to topo…
This note explains consequences of recent work of Frank Quinn for computations of Nil groups in algebraic K-theory, in particular the Nil groups occurring in the K-theory of polynomial rings, Laurent polynomial rings, and the group ring of the infinite dihedral group.
We determine the Chow rings of the complex algebraic groups of the exceptional type E_6, E_7, and E_8, giving the explicit generators represented by the pull-back images of Schubert varieties of the corresponding flag varieties. This is a continuation of the work of R. Marlin on the computation of the Chow rings of SO_n, Spin_n, G_2, and F_4. Our method is based on Schubert calculus of the corresponding flag varieties, which has its own interest.
In this paper, for any Milnor hypersurface we find the largest dimension of effective algebraic torus actions on it. The proof of the corresponding theorem is based on the computation of the automorphism group for any Milnor hypersurface. We find all generalised Buchstaber-Ray and Ray hypersurfaces that are toric varieties. We compute the Betti numbers of these hypersurfaces and describe their integral singular cohomology rings in terms of the cohomology of the corresponding ambient varieties.
We prove the Farrell-Jones Isomorphism Conjecture about the algebraic K-theory of a group ring RG in the case where the group G is the fundamental group of a closed Riemannian manifold with strictly negative sectional curvature. The coefficient ring R is an arbitrary associative ring with unit and the result applies to all dimensions.
We identify the $K$-theoretic fiber of a localization of ring spectra in terms of the $K$-theory of the endomorphism algebra spectrum of a Koszul-type complex. Using this identification, we provide a negative answer to a question of Rognes for $n>1$ by comparing the traces of the fiber of the map $K(BP(n))\rightarrow K(E(n))$ and of $K(BP(n-1))$ in rational topological Hochschild homology.
We introduce a new morphism between algebraic and hermitian K-theory. The topological analog is the Adams operation in real K-theory. From this morphism, we deduce a lower bound for the higher algebraic K-theory of a ring A in terms of the classical Witt group of the ring A tensored by its opposite ring.
Using methods developed by Franke, we obtain algebraic classification results for modules over certain symmetric ring spectra ($S$-algebras). In particular, for any symmetric ring spectrum $R$ whose graded homotopy ring $π_*R$ has graded global homological dimension 2 and is concentrated in degrees divisible by some natural number $N \geq 4$, we prove that the homotopy category of $R$-modules is equivalent to the derived category of the homotopy ring $π_*R$. This improves the Bousfield-Wolbert algebraic classification of isomorphism classes of objects of the homotopy category of $R$-modules. T…
We view strict ring spectra as generalized rings. The study of their algebraic K-theory is motivated by its applications to the automorphism groups of compact manifolds. Partial calculations of algebraic K-theory for the sphere spectrum are available at regular primes, but we seek more conceptual answers in terms of localization and descent properties. Calculations for ring spectra related to topological K-theory suggest the existence of a motivic cohomology theory for strictly commutative ring spectra, and we present evidence for arithmetic duality in this theory. To tie motivic cohomology to…
We give a concise introduction to the Farrell-Jones Conjecture in algebraic $K$-theory and to some of its applications. We survey the current status of the conjecture, and we illustrate the two main tools that are used to attack it: controlled algebra and trace methods.
Given a finite group $G$ acting on a ring $R$, Merling constructed an equivariant algebraic $K$-theory $G$-spectrum, and work of Malkiewich and Merling, as well as work of Barwick, provides an interpretation of this construction as a spectral Mackey functor. This construction is powerful, but highly categorical; as a result the Mackey functors comprising the homotopy are not obvious from the construction and have therefore not yet been calculated. In this work, we provide a computation of the homotopy Mackey functors of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory in terms of a purely algebraic constructi…
We develop algebraic geometry for general Segal's Gamma-rings and show that this new theory unifies two approaches we had considered earlier on (for a geometry under Spec Z). The starting observation is that the category obtained by gluing together the category of commutative rings and that of pointed commutative monoids, that we used in our previous work to define F1-schemes, is naturally a full subcategory of the category of Segal's Gamma-rings. In this paper we develop the affine case of this general algebraic geometry: one distinctive feature is that the spectrum Spec(A) of a Gamma-ring is…
We prove a trace formula in stable motivic homotopy theory over a general base scheme, equating the trace of an endomorphism of a smooth proper scheme with the "Euler characteristic integral" of a certain cohomotopy class over its scheme of fixed points. When the base is a field and the fixed points are étale, we compute this integral in terms of Morel's identification of the ring of endomorphisms of the motivic sphere spectrum with the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In particular, we show that the Euler characteristic of an étale algebra corresponds to the class of its trace form in the Grothendieck…
