Perelman has discovered two integral quantities, the shrinker entropy $\cW$ and the (backward) reduced volume, that are monotone under the Ricci flow $\pa g_{ij}/\pa t=-2R_{ij}$ and constant on shrinking solitons. Tweaking some signs, we find similar formulae corresponding to the expanding case. The {\it expanding entropy} $\ctW$ is monotone on any compact Ricci flow and constant precisely on expanders; as in Perelman, it follows from a differential inequality for a Harnack-like quantity for the conjugate heat equation, and leads to functionals $μ_+$ and $ν_+$. The {\it forward reduced volume} $θ_+$ is monotone in general and constant exactly on expanders.
A natural conjecture asserts that $g(t)/t$ converges as $t\to\infty$ to a negative Einstein manifold in some weak sense (in particular ignoring collapsing parts). If the limit is known a-priori to be smooth and compact, this statement follows easily from any monotone quantity that is constant on expanders; these include $\Vol(g)/t^{n/2}$ (Hamilton) and $\barλ$ (Perelman), as well as our new quantities. In general, we show that if $\Vol(g)$ grows like $t^{n/2}$ (maximal volume growth) then $\ctW$, $θ_+$ and $\barλ$ remain bounded (in their appropriate ways) for all time. We attempt a sharp formulation of the conjecture.
We establish Carleman inequalities for the weighted laplacian associated to an expanding gradient Ricci soliton. As a consequence, a unique continuation at infinity is proved for asymptotically Ricci flat Ricci expanders. The obstruction at infinity is a symmetric 2-tensor defined on the link of the corresponding asymptotic cone.
We investigate the possibility of desingularizing a positively curved metric cone by an expanding gradient Ricci soliton with positive curvature operator. This amounts to study the deformation of such geometric structures. As a consequence, we prove that the moduli space of conical positively curved gradient Ricci expanders is connected.
In this paper, we study how to get the Ricci expanders from W+-functional through the heat kernel estimate of the conjugate heat equation to the type III singularity of Ricci flow. The Gaussian upper and lower bounds are established for the related heat kernel in accordance to the interesting work of Cao-Zhang for the type I Rici flow.
We prove an optimal relative integral convergence rate for two expanding gradient Ricci solitons coming out of the same cone. As a consequence, we obtain a unique continuation result at infinity and we prove that a relative entropy for two such self-similar solutions to the Ricci flow is well-defined.
In this short note, we prove a uniqueness result for small entropy self-expanders asymptotic to a fixed cone. This is a direct consequence of the mountain-pass theorem and the integer degree argument proved by J. Bernstein and L. Wang.
We first show that any $4$-dimensional non-Ricci-flat steady gradient Ricci soliton singularity model must satisfy $|Rm|\leq cR$ for some positive constant $c$. Then, we apply the Hamilton-Ivey estimate to prove a quantitative lower bound of the curvature operator for $4$-dimensional steady gradient solitons with linear scalar curvatrue decay and proper potential function. The technique is also used to establish a sufficient condition for a $3$-dimensional expanding gradient Ricci soliton to have positive curvature. This sufficient condition is satisfied by a large class of conical expanders. …
In this paper we focus on the uniqueness question for (expanding) solutions of the Harmonic map flow coming out of smooth 0-homogeneous maps with values into a closed Riemannian manifold. We introduce a relative entropy for two purposes. On the one hand, we prove the existence of two expanding solutions associated to any suitable solution coming out of a $0$-homogeneous map by a blow-up and a blow-down process. On the other hand, generic uniqueness of expanding solutions coming out of the same 0-homogeneous map of 0 relative entropy is proved.
In this paper, we first introduce the weighted forward reduced volume of Ricci flow. The weighted forward reduced volume, which related to expanders of Ricci flow, is well-defined on noncompact manifolds and monotone non-increasing under Ricci flow. Moreover, we show that, just the same as the Perelman's reduced volume, the weighted reduced volume entropy has the value $(4π)^{\frac{n}{2}}$ if and only if the Ricci flow is the trivial flow on flat Euclidean space.
We define a relative entropy for two expanding solutions to mean curvature flow of hypersurfaces, asymptotic to the same cone at infinity. Adapting work of White and using recent results of Bernstein and Bernstein-Wang, we show that expanders with vanishing relative entropy are unique in a generic sense. This also implies that generically locally entropy minimising expanders are unique.
We study a notion of relative entropy motivated by self-expanders of mean curvature flow. In particular, we obtain the existence of this quantity for arbitrary hypersurfaces trapped between two disjoint self-expanders asymptotic to the same cone. This allows us to begin to develop the variational theory for the relative entropy functional for the associated obstacle problem. We also obtain a version of the forward monotonicity formula for mean curvature flow proposed by Ilmanen.
For a fixed regular cone in Euclidean space with small entropy we show that all smooth self-expanding solutions of the mean curvature flow that are asymptotic to the cone are in the same isotopy class.
In this article, we establish a monotonicity formula of Hamilton type entropy along Ricci flow on compact surfaces with boundary. We also study the relation between our entropy functional and the $\mathcal{W}$-functional of Perelman type.
We study a Boltzmann's type entropy functional (which appeared in existing literature) defined on Kähler metrics of a fixed Kähler class. The critical points of this functional are gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons, and the functional was known to be monotonically increasing along the Kähler-Ricci flow in the canonical class. In this article, we derive and analyze the second variation formula for this entropy functional, and show that all gradient Kähler-Ricci solitons are stable with respect to this entropy functional. Furthermore, using this result, we give a new proof that gradient shrinking K…
We give several Bishop-Gromov relative volume comparisons with integral Ricci curvature which improve the results in \cite{PW1}. Using one of these volume comparisons, we derive an estimate for the volume entropy in terms of integral Ricci curvature which substantially improves an earlier estimate in \cite{Au2} and give an application on the algebraic entropy of its fundamental group. We also extend the almost minimal volume rigidity of \cite{BBCG} to integral Ricci curvature.
In this paper, we prove the concavity of the Shannon entropy power for the heat equation associated with the Laplacian or the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds with suitable curvature-dimension condition and on compact super Ricci flows. Under suitable curvature-dimension condition, we prove that the rigidity models of the Shannon entropy power are Einstein or quasi Einstein manifolds with Hessian solitons. Moreover, we prove the convexity of the Shannon entropy power for the conjugate heat equation introduced by G. Perelman on Ricci flow and that the corresponding rigidity mod…
In [ZY2], the second author proved Perelman's assertion, namely, for an ancient Ricci flow with bounded and nonnegative curvature operator, bounded entropy is equivalent to noncollapsing on all scales. In this paper, we continue this discussion. It turns out that the curvature operator nonnegativity is not a necessary condition, and we need only to assume a consequence of Hamilton's trace Harnack. Furthermore, we show that this condition holds for steady Ricci solitons with nonnegative Ricci curvature.
In this paper we discuss Perelman's Lambda-functional, Perelman's Ricci shrinker entropy as well as the Ricci expander entropy on a class of manifolds with isolated conical singularities. On such manifolds, a singular Ricci de Turck flow preserving the isolated conical singularities exists by our previous work. We prove that the entropies are monotone along the singular Ricci de Turck flow. We employ these entropies to show that in the singular setting, Ricci solitons are gradient and that steady or expanding Ricci solitons are Einstein.
In this paper, we prove the characterization of the $(K, \infty)$-super Perelman Ricci flows by various functional inequalities and gradient estimate for the heat semigroup generated by the Witten Laplacian on manifolds equipped with time dependent metrics and potentials. As a byproduct, we derive the Hamilton type dimension free Harnack inequality on manifolds with $(K, \infty)$-super Perelman Ricci flows. Based on a new second order differential inequality on the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian, we introduce a new $W$-entropy quantity and prove its mon…
In this paper we introduce the log entropy functional and establish its monotonicity along the Ricci flow. One consequence of it is the monotonicity of the logarithmic Sobolev constant along the Ricci flow.
In this survey we review Hamilton's entropy and Perelman's entropy, and provide motivations for these concepts. Then we review recent results on the logarithmic Sobolev inequality, the Sobolev inequalities and kappa-noncollapsing estimates along the Ricci flow, including the Ricci flow with surgeries.
In this paper, we introduce an entropy functional on Riemannian foliation, inspired by the work of , which is monotonically along the transverse Ricci flow. We relate their gradient flow, via diffeomorphism preserving the foliated structure of the manifold with Riemannian foliation, to the transverse Ricci flow. Moreover, inspired by the work of Fuquan Fang and Yuhao Zhang, we give a necessary condition for codimension 4 Riemannian foliation admitting the transverse Einstein metric.
We localize the entropy functionals of G. Perelman and generalize his no-local-collapsing theorem and pseudo-locality theorem. Our generalization is technically inspired by further development of Li-Yau estimates along the Ricci flow. It has various applications, including to show the continuous dependence of the Ricci flow with respect to the initial metric in Gromov-Hausdorff topology with Ricci curvature bounded below, and to show the compactness of the moduli of Kähler manifolds with bounded scalar curvature and a rough locally almost Euclidean condition.
In this paper, we study the Ricci flat manifolds with maximal volume growth using Perelman's reduced volume of Ricci flow. We show that if $(M^n,g)$ is an noncompact complete Ricci flat manifold with maximal volume growth satisfying $|Rm|(x)\to 0$ as $d(x)=d_g(x,p)\to \infty$, then $M^n$ has the quadratic curvature decay. Some applications to this result are also presented.
In this paper we discuss the asymptotic entropy for ancient solutions to the Ricci flow. We prove a gap theorem for ancient solutions, which could be regarded as an entropy counterpart of Yokota's work. In addition, we prove that under some assumptions on one time slice of a complete ancient solution with nonnegative curvature operator, finite asymptotic entropy implies kappa-noncollapsing on all scales. This provides an evidence for Perelman's more general assertion that on a complete ancient solution with nonnegative curvature operator, bounded entropy is equivalent to kappa-noncollapsing.
In this paper, we extend the theory of Ricci flows satisfying a Type-I scalar curvature condition at a finite-time singularity. In [Bam16], Bamler showed that a Type-I rescaling procedure will produce a singular shrinking gradient Ricci soliton with singularities of codimension 4. We prove that the entropy of a conjugate heat kernel based at the singular time converges to the soliton entropy of the singular soliton, and use this to characterize the singular set of the Ricci flow solution in terms of a heat kernel density function. This generalizes results previously only known with the stronge…
The aim of this short note is to produce new examples of geometrical flows associated to a given Riemannian flow $g(t)$. The considered flow in covariant symmetric $2$-tensor fields will be called Ricci-Yamabe map since it involves a scalar combination of Ricci tensor and scalar curvature of $g(t)$. Due to the signs of considered scalars the Ricci-Yamabe flow can be also a Riemannian or semi-Riemannian or singular Riemannian flow. We study the associated function of volume variation as well as the volume entropy. Finally, since the two-dimensional case was the most handled situation we express…
We introduce two new functionals on Sasaki manifolds, inspired by the work of Perelman, which are monotonic along the Sasaki-Ricci flow. We relate their gradient flow, via diffeomorphisms preserving the foliated structure of the manifold, to the transverse Ricci flow. Finally, when the basic first Chern class is positive, we employ these new functionals to prove a uniform $C^{0}$ bound for the transverse scalar curvature, and a uniform $C^{1}$ bound for the transverse Ricci potential along the Sasaki-Ricci flow.
In this paper, we extend the method in [TZhu5] to study the energy level $L(\cdot)$ of Perelman's entropy $λ(\cdot)$ for Kähler-Ricci flow on a Fano manifold. Consequently, we first compute the supremum of $λ(\cdot)$ in Kähler class $2πc_1(M)$ under an assumption that the modified Mabuchi's K-energy $μ(\cdot)$ defined in [TZhu2] is bounded from below. Secondly, we give an alternative proof to the main theorem about the convergence of Kähler-Ricci flow in [TZhu3].
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact manifold with Ricci curvature almost bounded from below and $π:\bar{M}\to M$ be a normal, Riemannian cover. We show that, for any nonnegative function $f$ on $M$, the means of $føπ$ on the geodesic balls of $\bar{M}$ are comparable to the mean of $f$ on $M$. Combined with logarithmic volume estimates, this implies bounds on several topological invariants (volume entropy, simplicial volume, first Betti number and presentations of the fundamental group) in Ricci curvature $L^p$-bounded from below.
This note is a continuation of [CMZ21]. We shall show that an ancient Ricci flow with uniformly bounded Nash entropy must also have uniformly bounded $ν$-functional. Consequently, on such an ancient solution there are uniform logarithmic Sobolev and Sobolev inequalities. We emphasize that the main theorem in this paper is true so long as the theory in [Bam20c] is valid, and in particular, when the underlying manifold is closed.
We study blow-ups around fixed points at Type I singularities of the Ricci flow on closed manifolds using Perelman's W-functional. First, we give an alternative proof of the result obtained by Naber and Enders-Müller-Topping that blow-up limits are non-flat gradient shrinking Ricci solitons. Our second and main result relates a limit W-density at a Type I singular point to the entropy of the limit gradient shrinking soliton obtained by blowing-up at this point. In particular, we show that no entropy is lost at infinity during the blow-up process.
In this survey paper, we give an overview of our recent works on the study of the $W$-entropy for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on super-Ricci flows and the Langevin deformation on Wasserstein space over Riemannian manifolds. Inspired by Perelman's seminal work on the entropy formula for the Ricci flow, we prove the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on $n$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifolds with the $CD(K, m)$-condition, and the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation associated with the time dependent Witten Laplac…
We show that an $n$-dimensional surface whose entropy is close to that of an $n$-dimensional plane is close in Hausdorff distance to some $n$-dimensional plane at every scale. Moreover we show that self-expanders of low entropy converge in the Hausdorff sense to their asymptotic cones.
In this expository note, we study the second variation of Perelman's entropy on the space of Kahler metrics at a Kähler-Ricci soliton. We prove that the entropy is stable in the sense of variations. In particular, Perelman's entropy is stable along the Kähler-Ricci flow. The Chinese version of this note has appeared in a volume in honor of professor K.C.Chang (Scientia Sinica Math., 46 (2016), 685-696).
We present a monotonic expression for the Ricci flow, valid in all dimensions and without curvature assumptions. It is interpreted as an entropy for a certain canonical ensemble. Several geometric applications are given. In particular, (1) Ricci flow, considered on the space of riemannian metrics modulo diffeomorphism and scaling, has no nontrivial periodic orbits (that is, other than fixed points); (2) In a region, where singularity is forming in finite time, the injectivity radius is controlled by the curvature; (3) Ricci flow can not quickly turn an almost euclidean region into a very curve…
In this note we will show the almost maximal volume entropy rigidity for manifolds with lower integral Ricci curvature bound in the non-collapsing case: Given $n, d, p>\frac{n}{2}$, there exist $δ(n, d, p), ε(n, d, p)>0$, such that for $δ<δ(n, d, p)$, $ε<ε(n, d, p)$, if a compact $n$-manifold $M$ satisfies that the integral Ricci curvature has lower bound $\bar k(-1, p)\leq δ$, the diameter $diam(M)\leq d$ and volume entropy $h(M)\geq n-1-ε$, then the universal cover of $M$ is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a hyperbolic space form $\Bbb H^k$, $k\leq n$; If in addition the volume of $M$, $vol(M)\geq…
Consider the scaling invariant, sharp log entropy (functional) introduced by Weissler \cite{W:1} on noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. It can also be regarded as a sharpened version of Perelman's W entropy \cite{P:1} in the stationary case. We prove that it has a minimizer if and only if the manifold is isometric to $\R^n$. Using this result, it is proven that a class of noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature is isometric to $\R^n$. Comparing with the well known flatness results in \cite{An:1}, \cite{Ba:1} and \cite{BKN:1} on asymptotically flat manifolds and…
We introduce a new entropy functional for nonnegative solutions of the heat equation on a manifold with time-dependent Riemannian metric. Under certain integral assumptions, we show that this entropy is non-decreasing, and moreover convex if the metric evolves under super Ricci flow (which includes Ricci flow and fixed metrics with nonnegative Ricci curvature). As applications, we classify nonnegative ancient solutions to the heat equation according to their entropies. In particular, we show that a nonnegative ancient solution whose entropy grows sublinearly on a manifold evolving under super …
In this paper, we prove logarithmic Sobolev inequalities and derive the Hamilton Harnack inequality for the heat semigroup of the Witten Laplacian on complete Riemannian manifolds equipped with $K$-super Perelman Ricci flow. We establish the $W$-entropy formula for the heat equation of the Witten Laplacian and prove a rigidity theorem on complete Riemannian manifolds satisfying the $CD(K, m)$ condition, and extend the $W$-entropy formula to time dependent Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with $(K, m)$-super Perelman Ricci flow, where $K\in \mathbb{R}$ and $m\in [n, \infty]$ are…
In this note we determine the first two derivatives of the classical Boltzmann-Shannon entropy of the conjugate heat equation on general evolving manifolds. Based on the second derivative of the Boltzmann-Shannon entropy, we construct Perelman's F and W entropy in abstract geometric flows. Monotonicity of the entropies holds when a technical condition is satisfied. This condition is satisfied on static Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, for Hamilton's Ricci flow, List's extended Ricci flow, Müller's Ricci flow coupled with harmonic map flow and Lorentzian mean curvature flo…
We derive the entropy formula for the linear heat equaiton on complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. As applications, we study the relation between the value of entropy and the volume of balls of various scales. The results are simpler version, without Ricci flow, of Perelman's recent results on volume non-collapsing.
In this note, we prove some new entropy formula for linear heat equation on static Riemannian manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature. The results are analogies of Cao and Hamilton's entropies for Ricci flow coupled with heat-type equations.
In this paper, we develop a new approach to prove the $W$-entropy formula for the Witten Laplacian via warped product on Riemannian manifolds and give a natural geometric interpretation of a quantity appeared in the $W$-entropy formula. Then we prove the $W$-entropy formula for the Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with time dependent metrics and potentials, and derive the $W$-entropy formula for the backward heat equation associated with the Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds equipped with Lott's modified Ricci flow. We also extend our results to complete Riemanni…
We numerically calculate Perelman's entropy for a variety of canonical metrics on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$-bundles over products of Fano Kähler-Einstein manifolds. The metrics investigated are Einstein metrics, Kähler-Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein metrics. The calculation of the entropy allows a rough picture of how the Ricci flow behaves on each of the manifolds in question.
In this note, we establish the first variation formula of the adjusted log entropy functional $\mathcal Y_a$ introduced by Ye in \cite{Y2}. As a direct consequence, we also obtain the monotonicity of $\mathcal Y_a$ along the Ricci flow.
We localize the entropy functionals of G. Perelman and generalize his no-local-collapsing theorem and pseudo-locality theorem. Our generalization is technically inspired by further development of Li-Yau estimate along the Ricci flow. It can be used to show the Gromov-Hausdorff convergence of the Kähler Ricci flow on each minimal projective manifold of general type.
In this paper it is proven that the volume entropy of a riemannian metric evolving by the Ricci flow, if does not collapse, nondecreases. Therefore, it provides a sufficient condition for a solution to collapse. Then, for the limit solutions of type I or III, the limit entropy is the limit of the entropy as $t$ approaches the singular (finite or not) time.
The volume entropy of a compact metric measure space is known to be the exponential growth rate of the measure lifted to its universal cover at infinity. For a compact Riemannian $n$-manifold with a negative lower Ricci curvature bound and a upper diameter bound, it was known that it admits an almost maximal volume entropy if and only if it is diffeomorphic and Gromov-Hausdorff close to a hyperbolic space form. We prove the quantitative rigidity of almost maximal volume entropy for $\operatorname{RCD}$-spaces with a negative lower Ricci curvature bound and Riemannian manifolds with a negative …
