We study isometric actions of tree automorphism groups on the infinite-dimensional hyperbolic spaces. On the one hand, we exhibit a general one-parameter family of such representations and analyse the corresponding equivariant embeddings of the trees, showing that they are convex-cocompact and asymptotically isometric. On the other hand, focusing on the case of sufficiently transitive groups of automorphisms of locally finite trees, we classify completely all irreducible representations by isometries of hyperbolic spaces. It turns out that in this case our one-parameter family exhausts all non-elementary representations.
In the last years, there has been a large amount of research on embeddability properties of finitely generated hyperbolic groups. In this paper, we elaborate on the more general class of locally compact hyperbolic groups. We compute the equivariant $L_p$-compression in a number of locally compact examples, such as the groups $SO(n,1)$: by proving that the equivariant $L_p$-compression of a locally compact compactly generated group is minimal for $p=2$, we calculate all equivariant $L_p$-compressions of $SO(n,1)$. Next, we show that although there are locally compact, non-discrete hyperbolic gr…
Suppose a group $G$ is relatively hyperbolic with respect to a collection $\PP$ of its subgroups and also acts properly, cocompactly on a $\CAT(0)$ (or $δ$--hyperbolic) space $X$. The relatively hyperbolic structure provides a relative boundary $\partial(G,\PP)$. The $\CAT(0)$ structure provides a different boundary at infinity $\partial X$. In this article, we examine the connection between these two spaces at infinity. In particular, we show that $\partial (G,\PP)$ is $G$--equivariantly homeomorphic to the space obtained from $\partial X$ by identifying the peripheral limit points of the sam…
We show that every Gromov hyperbolic group $\Ga$ admits a quasi-isometric embedding into the product of $(n+1)$ binary trees, where $n=\dim\di\Ga$ is the topological dimension of the boundary at infinity of $\Ga$.
We prove that a finitely generated, right-angled, hyperbolic Coxeter group can be quasiisometrically embedded into the product of n binary trees, where n is the chromatic number of the group. As application we obtain certain strongly aperiodic tilings of the Davis complex of these groups.
We prove the existence of continuous boundary extensions (Cannon-Thurston maps) for the inclusion of a vertex space into a tree of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic spaces satisfying the qi-embedded condition. This implies the same result for inclusion of vertex (or edge) subgroups in finite graphs of (strongly) relatively hyperbolic groups. This generalises a result of Bowditch for punctured surfaces in 3 manifolds and a result of Mitra for trees of hyperbolic metric spaces.
We present a careful approximation of the geodesics in trees of hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic groups. As an application we prove a combination theorem for finite graphs of relatively hyperbolic groups, with both Farb's and Gromov's definitions.
Tree-graded spaces are generalizations of R-trees. They appear as asymptotic cones of groups (when the cones have cut points). Since many questions about endomorphisms and automorphisms of groups, solving equations over groups, studying embeddings of a group into another group, etc. lead to actions of groups on the asymptotic cones, it is natural to consider actions of groups on tree-graded spaces. We develop a theory of such actions which generalizes the well known theory of groups acting on R-trees. As applications of our theory, we describe, in particular, relatively hyperbolic groups with …
We show that a relatively hyperbolic group quasi-isometrically embeds in a product of finitely many trees if the peripheral subgroups do, and we provide an estimate on the minimal number of trees needed. Applying our result to the case of 3-manifolds, we show that fundamental groups of closed 3-manifolds have linearly controlled asymptotic dimension at most 8. To complement this result, we observe that fundamental groups of Haken 3-manifolds with non-empty boundary have asymptotic dimension 2.
We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain some results about the algebraic structure, analytic properties and measure equivalence rigidity of groups from these classes.
We give an alternative proof of the Bestvina--Feighn combination theorem for trees hyperbolic spaces and describe uniform quasigeodesics in such spaces. As one of the applications, we prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for inclusion maps of total spaces of subtrees of hyperbolic spaces.
Given a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold M with a quasigeodesic flow we construct a π_1-equivariant sphere-filling curve in the boundary of hyperbolic space. Specifically, we show that any complete transversal P to the lifted flow on H^3 has a natural compactification as a closed disc that inherits a π_1 action. The embedding of P in H^3 extends continuously to the compactification and the restriction to the boundary is a surjective π_1-equivariant map from S^1 to S^2_\infty. This generalizes the result of Cannon and Thurston for fibered hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
In [BBM21], Belk, Bleak and Matucci proved that hyperbolic groups can be seen as subgroups of the rational group. In order to do so, they associated a tree of atoms to each hyperbolic group. Not so many connections between this tree and the literature on hyperbolic groups were known. In this paper, we prove an atom-version of the fellow traveler property and exponential divergence, together with other similar results. These leads to several consequences: a bound from above of the topological dimension of the Gromov boundary, the definition of an augmented tree which is quasi-isometric to the C…
For every hyperbolic group and more general hyperbolic graphs, we construct an equivariant ideal bicombing: this is a homological analogue of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We then construct a cohomological invariant which implies that several Measure Equivalence and Orbit Equivalence rigidity results established by Monod-Shalom hold for all non-elementary hyperbolic groups and their non-elementary subgroups. We also derive superrigidity results for actions of general irreducible lattices on a large class of hyperbolic metric spaces.
We construct cocompact lattices in a product of trees which are not virtually torsion-free. This gives the first examples of hierarchically hyperbolic groups which are not virtually torsion-free
We prove that the class of finitely presented inverse monoids whose Schützenberger graphs are quasi-isometric to trees has a uniformly solvable word problem, furthermore, the languages of their Schützenberger automata are context-free. On the other hand, we show that there is a finitely presented inverse monoid with hyperbolic Schützenberger graphs and an unsolvable word problem.
A group G is acylindrically hyperbolic if it admits a non-elementary acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. We prove that every acylindrically hyperbolic group G has a generating set X such that the corresponding Cayley graph is a (non-elementary) quasi-tree and the action of G on the Cayley graph is acylindrical. Our proof utilizes the notions of hyperbolically embedded subgroups and projection complexes. As a by-product, we obtain some new results about hyperbolically embedded subgroups and quasi-convex subgroups of acylindrically hyperbolic groups.
In our paper arXiv:1310.6289, we stated that acylindrical hyperbolicity of a group is invariant under commensurability up to finite kernels. Unfortunately, the proof of this fact contained a gap. The goal of this erratum is to point out the gap and to correct the statements and proofs of results of arXiv:1310.6289 and the subsequent paper arXiv:1501.03066 affected by it.
We define analogues of the graphs of free splittings, of cyclic splittings, and of maximally-cyclic splittings of $F_N$ for free products of groups, and show their hyperbolicity. Given a countable group $G$ which splits as $G=G_1\ast\dots\ast G_k\ast F$, where $F$ denotes a finitely generated free group, we identify the Gromov boundary of the graph of relative cyclic splittings with the space of equivalence classes of $\mathcal{Z}$-averse trees in the boundary of the corresponding outer space. A tree is \emph{$\mathcal{Z}$-averse} if it is not compatible with any tree $T'$, that is itself comp…
We present some explicit constructions of universal R-trees with applications to the asymptotic geometry of hyperbolic spaces. In particular, we show that any asymptotic cone of a complete simply connected manifold of negative curvature is a complete homogeneous R-tree with the valency $2^{\aleph_0}$ at every point. It implies that all these asymptotic cones are isometric depending neither on a manifold nor on an ultrafilter. It is also proved that the same R-tree can be isometrically embedded at infinity into such a manifold or into a non-abelian free group.
Let G be a group acting cocompactly without inversion on a tree X, with all vertex and edge stabilizers isomorphic to the same free abelian group Z^n. We prove that G has the Haagerup Property if and only if G is weakly amenable, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for this to happen. In particular, denoting by d the rank of the fundamental group of the graph X modded out by G, we deduce that G has the Haagerup Property if either d=0, d=1, or n=1. In these three cases, we show that the L^p-compression rate of G is 1, and that its equivariant L^p-compression rate is max{1/p,1/2} (p…
We show that trees of manifolds, the topological spaces introduced by Jakobsche, appear as boundaries at infinity of various spaces and groups. In particular, they appear as Gromov boundaries of some hyperbolic groups, of arbitrary dimension, obtained by the procedure of strict hyperbolization. We also recognize these spaces as boundaries of arbitrary Coxeter groups with manifold nerves, and as Gromov boundaries of the fundamental groups of singular spaces obtained from some finite volume hyperbolic manifolds by cutting off their cusps and collapsing the resulting boundary tori to points.
A JSJ decomposition of a group is a splitting that allows one to classify all possible splittings of the group over a certain family of edge groups. Although JSJ decompositions are not unique in general, Guirardel--Levitt have constructed a canonical JSJ decomposition, the tree of cylinders, which classifies splittings of relatively hyperbolic groups over elementary subgroups. In this paper, we give a new topological construction of the Guirardel--Levitt tree of cylinders, and we show that this tree depends only on the homeomorphism type of the Bowditch boundary. Furthermore, the tree of cylin…
A continuous equivariant map from the Floyd boundary of a relatively hyperbolic group (RHG for short) to its Bowditch boundary is constructed. Such a map is unique unless the group is two-ended. In order to optimize the proof and the usage of the map theorem we propose two new definitions of relative hyperbolicity equivalent to the other known definitions. In our approach some "visibility" conditions in graphs are essential. We introduce a class of "visibility actions" that contains the class of relatively hyperbolic actions. The convergence property still holds for the visibility actions. We …
For finitely supported random walks on finitely generated groups $G$ we prove that the identity map on $G$ extends to a continuous equivariant surjection from the Martin boundary to the Floyd boundary, with preimages of conical points being singletons. This yields new results for relatively hyperbolic groups. Our key estimate relates the Green and Floyd metrics, generalizing results of Ancona for random walks on hyperbolic groups and of Karlsson for quasigeodesics. We then apply these techniques to obtain some results concerning the harmonic measure on the limit sets of geometrically finite is…
We introduce and analyze parallelizable algorithms to compress and accurately reconstruct finite simplicial complexes that have non-trivial automorphisms. The compressed data -- called a complex of groups -- amounts to a functor from (the poset of simplices in) the orbit space to the 2-category of groups, whose higher structure is prescribed by isomorphisms arising from conjugation. Using this functor, we show how to algorithmically recover the original complex up to equivariant simplicial isomorphism. Our algorithms are derived from generalizations (by Bridson-Haefliger, Carbone-Rips and Cors…
In this paper we give new requirements that a tree of $δ$-hyperbolic spaces has to satisfy in order to be $δ$-hyperbolic itself. As an application, we give a simple proof that limit groups are relatively hyperbolic.
If $\mathcal C$ is a class of complexes closed under taking full subcomplexes and covers and $\mathcal G$ is the class of groups admitting proper and cocompact actions on one-connected complexes in $\mathcal C$, then $\mathcal G$ is closed under taking finitely presented subgroups. As a consequence the following classes of groups are closed under taking finitely presented subgroups: groups acting geometrically on regular $CAT(0)$ simplicial complexes of dimension $3$, $k$-systolic groups for $k\geq 6$, and groups acting geometrically on $2$-dimensional negatively curved complexes. We also show…
