We introduce a natural extension of the metric tensor and the Hodge star operator to the algebra of double forms to study some aspects of the structure of this algebra. These properties are then used to study new Riemannian curvature invariants, called the $(p,q)$-curvatures. They are a generalization of the $p$-curvature obtained by substituting the Gauss-Kronecker tensor to the Riemann curvature tensor. In particular, for $p=0$, the $(0,q)$-curvatures coincide with the H. Weyl curvature invariants, for $p=1$ the $(1,q)$-curvatures are the curvatures of generalized Einstein tensors and for $q=1$ the $(p,1)$-curvatures coincide with the p-curvatures. Also, we prove that for an Einstein manifold of dimension $n\geq 4$ the second H. Weyl curvature invariant is nonegative, and that it is nonpositive for a conformally flat manifold with zero scalar curvature. A similar result is proved for the higher H. Weyl curvature invariants.
We show that any smooth solution to the mean curvature flow equations coming out of a rotationally symmetric double cone is also rotationally symmetric.
We describe the $ν$-lines of curvature of an embedding of the double torus into $\mathbb R^4$, defined as the link of the real part of the Milnor fibration of a polynomial, where $ν$ is its gradient. Through this analysis, we present a complete description of the foliation of lines of curvature of the embedding, defined as the image of the stereographic projection of this link into $\mathbb R^3$.
By a symmetric double graph we mean a hypersurface which is mirror-symmetric and the two symmetric parts are graphs over the hyperplane of symmetry. We prove that there is a weak solution of mean curvature flow that preserves these properties and singularities only occur on the hyperplane of symmetry. The result can be used to construct smooth solutions to the free Neumann boundary problem on a supporting hyperplane with singular boundary. For the construction we introduce and investigate a notion named "vanity" and which is similar to convexity. Moreover, we rely on Sáez' and Schnürer's "mean…
We show that any integral Brakke flow coming out of a rotationally symmetric double cone with entropy at most two must stay rotationally symmetric for all time, provided the flow is smooth for a short time. We also show the existence of a non-self-similar flow coming out of a double cone with entropy at most two, and give an example of such a flow with a finite time singularity.
Given a closed manifold $M$ and a vector bundle $ξ$ of rank $n$ over $M$, by gluing two copies of the disc bundle of $ξ$, we can obtain a closed manifold $D(ξ, M)$, the so-called double manifold. In this paper, we firstly prove that each sphere bundle $S_r(ξ)$ of radius $r>0$ is an isoparametric hypersurface in the total space of $ξ$ equipped with a connection metric, and for $r>0$ small enough, the induced metric of $S_r(ξ)$ has positive Ricci curvature under the additional assumptions that $M$ has a metric with positive Ricci curvature and $n\geq3$. As an application, if $M$ admits a metric …
We obtain existence of double bubbles of large and constant mean curvatures in Riemannian manifolds. These arise as perturbations of geodesic standard double bubbles centered at critical points of the ambient scalar curvature and aligned along eigen-vectors of the ambient Ricci tensor. We also obtain general multiplicity results via Lusternik-Schnirelman theory, and extra ones in case of double bubbles whose opposite boundaries have the same mean curvature.
Cheeger and Gromov showed that F-structures are related to collapse with a double-sided curvature bound. We define fibered F-structures and extend some of the Cheeger-Gromov results to the setting of collapse with a lower bound on the curvature operator.
The double tetrahedron is the triangulation of the three-sphere gotten by gluing together two congruent tetrahedra along their boundaries. As a piecewise flat manifold, its geometry is determined by its six edge lengths, giving a notion of a metric on the double tetrahedron. We study notions of Einstein metrics, constant scalar curvature metrics, and the Yamabe problem on the double tetrahedron, with some reference to the possibilities on a general piecewise flat manifold. The main tool is analysis of Regge's Einstein-Hilbert functional, a piecewise flat analogue of the Einstein-Hilbert (or to…
We translate into the double forms formalism the basic identities of Greub and Greub-Vanstone that were obtained in the mixed exterior algebra. In particular, we introduce a second product in the space of double forms, namely the composition product, which provides this space with a second associative algebra structure. The composition product interacts with the exterior product of double forms; the resulting relations provide simple alternative proofs to some classical linear algebra identities as well as to recent results in the exterior algebra of double forms.\\ We define a refinement of t…
Motivated by the celebrated Schoen-Yau-Gromov-Lawson surgery theory on metrics of positive scalar curvature, we construct a double manifold associated with a minimal isoparametric hypersurface in the unit sphere. The resulting double manifold carries a metric of positive scalar curvature and an isoparametric foliation as well. To investigate the topology of the double manifolds, we use K-theory and the representation of the Clifford algebra for the FKM-type, and determine completely the isotropy subgroups of singular orbits for homogeneous case.
We show how the double vector bundle structure of the manifold of double velocities, with its submanifolds of holonomic and semiholonomic double velocities, is mirrored by a structure of holonomic and semiholonomic subgroups in the principal prolongation of the first jet group. We use the actions of these groups to construct holonomic and semiholonomic submanifolds in the manifold of double contact elements, and show that these give rise to affine bundles where a semiholonomic element has well-defined holonomic and curvature components.
We present several deformation and rigidity results within the classes of closed Riemannian manifolds which either are $2k$-Einstein (in the sense that their $2k$-Ricci tensor is constant) or have constant $2k$-Gauss-Bonnet curvature. The results hold for a family of manifolds containing all non-flat space forms and the main ingredients in the proofs are explicit formulae for the linearizations of the above invariants obtained by means of the formalism of double forms.
We use the exterior product of double forms to reformulate celebrated classical results of linear algebra about matrices and bilinear forms namely the Cayley-Hamilton theorem, Laplace expansion of the determinant, Newton identities and Jacobi's formula for the determinant. This new formalism is then used to naturally generalize the previous results to higher multilinear forms namely to double forms. In particular, we show that the Cayley-Hamilton theorem once applied to the second fundamental form of a hypersurface of the Euclidean space is equivalent to a linearized version of the Gauss-Bonne…

In all dimensions and arbitrary signature, we demonstrate the existence of a new local potential -- a double (2,3)-form -- for the Weyl curvature tensor, and more generally for all tensors with the symmetry properties of the Weyl curvature tensor. The classical four-dimensional Lanczos potential for a Weyl tensor -- a double (2,1)-form -- is proven to be a particular case of the new potential: its double dual.
This paper concerns complete noncompact manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. Roughly, we say that M has the loops to infinity property if given any noncontractible closed curve, C, and given any compact set, K, there exists a closed curve contained in M\K which is homotopic to C. The main theorems in this paper are the following. Theorem I: If M has positive Ricci curvature then it has the loops to infinity property. Theorem II: If M has nonnegative Ricci curvature then it either has the loops to infinity property or it is isometric to a flat normal bundle over a compact totally geodesi…
In this paper, we study the shape of the min-max minimal hypersurface produced by Almgren-Pitts-Schoen-Simon \cite{AF62, AF65, P81, SS81} in a Riemannian manifold $(M^{n+1}, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature for all dimensions. The min-max hypersurface has a singular set of Hausdorff codimension $7$. We characterize the Morse index, area and multiplicity of this singular min-max hypersurface. In particular, we show that the min-max hypersurface is either orientable and has Morse index one, or is a double cover of a non-orientable stable minimal hypersurface. As an essential technical tool, we pr…
Double field theory was developed by theoretical physicists as a way to encompass $T$-duality. In this paper, we express the basic notions of the theory in differential-geometric invariant terms, in the framework of para-Kaehler manifolds. We define metric algebroids, which are vector bundles with a bracket of cross sections that has the same metric compatibility property as a Courant bracket. We show that a double field gives rise to two canonical connections, whose scalar curvatures can be integrated to obtain actions. Finally, in analogy with Dirac structures, we define and study para-Dirac…
We address three related problems in the theory of elasticity, formulated in the framework of double forms: the Saint-Venant compatibility condition, the existence and uniqueness of solutions for equations arising in incompatible elasticity, and the existence of stress potentials. The scope of this work is for manifolds with boundary of arbitrary dimension, having constant sectional curvature. The central analytical machinery is the regular ellipticity of a boundary-value problem for a bilaplacian operator, and its consequences, which were developed in [KL21]. One of the novelties of this work…
The thickness, NIR(K) of a knot or link K is defined to be the radius of the largest solid tube one can put around the curve without any self intersections, which is also known as the normal injectivity radius of K. For C^{1,1} curves K, NIR(K)=min{(1/2)DCSC(K),(1/(supkappa(K))))}, where kappa(K) is the generalized curvature, and the double critical self distance DCSD(K) is the shortest length of the segments perpendicular to K at both end points. The knots and links in ideal shapes (or tight knots or links) belong to the minima of ropelength = length/thickness within a fixed isotopy class. In…
Relatively extremal knots are the relative minima of the ropelength functional in C^1 topology. On the set curves of fixed length, they are the relative maxima of thickness (normal injectivity radius) functional, including the ideal knots. We prove that a C^{1,1} relatively extremal knot in R^n has thickness equal to half of the minimal double critical distance unless it has constant maximal (generalized) curvature. This result also applies to links since our method is local. Our main approach is to show that the shortest curves with bounded curvature and C^1 boundary conditions in R^n contain…
