In this paper we define Ordered Generating System for finite non-abelian groups, which is a generalization of the basis theorem for finite abelian groups. We prove the following: If each composition factor of a group G has Ordered Generating System, then G has Ordered Generating System as well. Hence, it remains to prove that every finite simple group has Ordered Generating System. In this paper we prove that the sporadic group of Mathieu has the property of Ordered Generating System.
Abelian groups having partial orderings compatible with their binary operations have long been studied in the literature. In particular, lattice-ordered abelian groups constitute a universal-algebraic variety, and thus form a category which is monadic over the category of sets. The current paper studies the more general case of quasi-ordered abelian groups, identifying some of their more fundamental properties and their relationships to partially ordered and lattice-ordered groups. We reinterpret the category of quasi-ordered abelian groups with order preserving morphisms by examining the inte…
We characterize the groups isomorphic to full automorphism groups of ordered abelian groups. The result will follow from classical theorems on ordered groups adding an argument from proofs used to realize rings as endomorphism rings of abelian groups.
A unital $\ell$-group $(G,u)$ is an abelian group $G$ equipped with a translation-invariant lattice-order and a distinguished element $u$, called order-unit, whose positive integer multiples eventually dominate each element of $G$. We classify finitely generated unital $\ell$-groups by sequences $\mathcal W = (W_{0},W_{1},...)$ of weighted abstract simplicial complexes, where $W_{t+1}$ is obtained from $W_{t}$ either by the classical Alexander binary stellar operation, or by deleting a maximal simplex of $W_{t}$. A simple criterion is given to recognize when two such sequences classify isomorp…
Let $G$ be an $\ell$-group (which is short for ``lattice-ordered abelian group''). Baker and Beynon proved that $G$ is finitely presented iff it is finitely generated and projective. In the category $\mathcal U$ of {\it unital} $\ell$-groups---those $\ell$-groups having a distinguished order-unit $u$---only the $(\Leftarrow)$-direction holds in general. Morphisms in $\mathcal U$ are {\it unital $\ell$-homomorphisms,} i.e., hom\-o\-mor\-phisms that preserve the order-unit and the lattice structure. We show that a unital $\ell$-group $(G,u)$ is finitely presented iff it has a basis, i.e., $G$ is…
We establish, generalizing Di Nola and Lettieri's categorical equivalence, a Morita-equivalence between the theory of lattice-ordered abelian groups and that of perfect MV-algebras. Further, after observing that the two theories are not bi-interpretable in the classical sense, we identify, by considering appropriate topos-theoretic invariants on their common classifying topos, three levels of bi-intepretability holding for particular classes of formulas: irreducible formulas, geometric sentences and imaginaries. Lastly, by investigating the classifying topos of the theory of perfect MV-algebra…
Cannon has given an example of a virtually abelian group and a generating set where the full language of geodesics is not regular. We describe a virtually abelian group and a generating set so that no regular language of geodesics surjects to the group.
A lattice-ordered group (an $\ell$-group) $G(\oplus, \vee, \wedge)$ can be naturally viewed as a semiring $G(\vee,\oplus)$. We give a full classification of (abelian) $\ell$-groups which are finitely generated as semirings, by first showing that each such $\ell$-group has an order-unit so that we can use the results of Busaniche, Cabrer and Mundici [8]. Then we carefully analyze their construction in our setting to obtain the classification in terms of certain $\ell$-groups associated to rooted trees (Theorem 4.1). This classification result has a number of important applications: for example …
A unital $\ell$-group is an abelian group equipped with a translation invariant lattice-order and with a distinguished strong unit, i.e. an element whose positive integer multiples eventually dominate every element of $G$.If $X$ is a compact subset of $R^n$, the set $M(X)$ of real-valued piecewise linear maps with integer coefficients, whose addition and lattice operations defined pointwise and whose distinguished element is the constant map $1$, is a unital $\ell$-group. In this paper we provide a geometric decription of finitely generated (regular) projective unital $\ell$-groups. We prove t…
Let $G$ be an ordered group that is a direct sum of a rank-one torsion-free abelian group and a finite-rank torsion-free abelian group, with order structure arising from the natural order on the first summand. A necessary condition and a sufficient condition are given for $G$ to have an ordered-group inductive limit representation using injective maps.
For a group $G,$ let $Γ(G)$ denote the graph defined on the elements of $G$ in such a way that two distinct vertices are connected by an edge if and only if they generate $G$. Moreover let $Γ^*(G)$ be the subgraph of $Γ(G)$ that is induced by all the vertices of $Γ(G)$ that are not isolated. We prove that if $G$ is a 2-generated non-cyclic abelian group then $Γ^*(G)$ is connected. Moreover $\mathrm{diam}(Γ^*(G))=2$ if the torsion subgroup of $G$ is non-trivial and $\mathrm{diam}(Γ^*(G))=\infty$ otherwise. If $F$ is the free group of rank 2, then $Γ^*(F)$ is connected and we deduce from $\mathr…
The complexity of a geodesic language has connections to algebraic properties of the group. Gilman, Hermiller, Holt, and Rees show that a finitely generated group is virtually free if and only if its geodesic language is locally excluding for some finite inverse-closed generating set. The existence of such a correspondence and the result of Hermiller, Holt, and Rees that finitely generated abelian groups have piecewise excluding geodesic language for all finite inverse-closed generating sets motivated our work. We show that a finitely generated group with piecewise excluding geodesic language …
We show that finitely generated Abelian groups admit equal growth functions with respect to symmetric generating sets if and only if they have the same rank and the torsion parts have the same parity. In contrast, finitely generated Abelian groups admit equal growth functions with respect to monoid generating sets if and only if they have same rank. Moreover, we show that the size of the torsion part is in fact determined by the set of all growth functions of a finitely generated Abelian group.
We find a set of generators for the automorphism group of a graph product of finitely generated abelian groups entirely from a certain labeled graph. In addition, we find generators for the important subgroup of star-automorphisms defined in [7]. We follow closely the plan of M. Laurence's paper [11].
A generating pair $x, y$ for a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{symmetric}} if there exists an automorphism $φ_{x,y}$ of $G$ inverting both $x$ and $y$, that is, $x^{φ_{x,y}}=x^{-1}$ and $y^{φ_{x,y}}=y^{-1}$. Similarly, a group $G$ is said to be \textbf{\textit{strongly symmetric}} if $G$ can be generated with two elements and if all generating pairs of $G$ are symmetric. In this paper we classify the finite strongly symmetric non-abelian simple groups. Combinatorially, these are the finite non-abelian simple groups $G$ such that every orientably regular hypermap with monodromy group $G…
A toric braid is a braid whose closure is a torus link in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Manturov generalized toric braids that is called quasitoric braids and showed that the subset of quasitoric braids in the classical braid group is a subgroup of the braid group. We call this subgroup the quasitoric braid group. In this paper, we give two minimal generating sets for the quasitoric braid group and determine its abelianization. The minimalities of these two generating sets are obtained from a lower bound by the number of generators for the abelianization.
Our paper deals with the investigation of extensions of commutative groups by loops so that the quasigroups that result in the multiplication between cosets of the kernel subgroup are T-quasigroups. We limit our study to extensions in which the quasigroups determining the multiplication are linear functions without constant term, called linear abelian extensions. We characterize constructively such extensions with left-, right-, or inverse properties using a general construction according to an equivariant group action principle. We show that the obtained constructions can be simplified for or…
Partially ordered groups, also known as po-groups, are groups with a compatible partial order. Results from M.I. Zajceva and H.-H. Teh are combined in order to provide a full characterisation of linear order extensions of a given order on a group. In contrast to Teh this approach provides a method to discuss linear orders of different abelian rank in a uniform manner. This will be achieved by modelling the linear orders using hyperplanes in a real vector spaces. Among some additional remarks a construction of an archimedian directed order is given for every torsion free abelian group.
We address the "sums of dilates problem" by looking for non-trivial lower bounds on sumsets of the form $k \cdot X + l \cdot X$, where $k$ and $l$ are non-zero integers and $X$ is a subset of a possibly non-abelian group $G$ (written additively). In particular, we investigate the extension of some results so far known only for the integers to the context of torsion-free or linearly orderable groups, either abelian or not.
We define the positive diameter of a finite group $G$ with respect to a generating set $A\subset G$ to be the smallest non-negative integer $n$ such that every element of $G$ can be written as a product of at most $n$ elements of $A$. This invariant, which we denote by $\diam_A^+(G)$, can be interpreted as the diameter of the Cayley digraph induced by $A$ on $G$. In this paper we study the positive diameters of a finite abelian group $G$ with respect to its various generating sets $A$. More specifically, we determine the maximum possible value of $\diam_A^+(G)$ and classify all generating sets…
We study representations of MV-algebras -- equivalently, unital lattice-ordered abelian groups -- through the lens of Stone-Priestley duality, using canonical extensions as an essential tool. Specifically, the theory of canonical extensions implies that the (Stone-Priestley) dual spaces of MV-algebras carry the structure of topological partial commutative ordered semigroups. We use this structure to obtain two different decompositions of such spaces, one indexed over the prime MV-spectrum, the other over the maximal MV-spectrum. These decompositions yield sheaf representations of MV-algebras, …
We prove several new results on the structure of the subgroup generated by a small doubling subset of an ordered group, abelian or not. We obtain precise results generalizing Freiman's 3k-3 and 3k-2 theorems in the integers and several further generalizations.
We investigate the structure of the monoid of endomorphisms of the ordered set $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ of rational numbers. We show that for any countable linearly ordered set $Ω$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of $\operatorname{End}(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Ω$. We characterise those subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ that arise as a retract in $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ in terms of topological information concerning $X$. Finally, we establish that a countable group arises as the automorphism group of a countable linearly ordered set, and hence as a maximal…
