We characterize the groups isomorphic to full automorphism groups of ordered abelian groups. The result will follow from classical theorems on ordered groups adding an argument from proofs used to realize rings as endomorphism rings of abelian groups.
An infinite linearly ordered set (S,<=) is called doubly homogeneous if its automorphism group A(S) acts 2-transitively on it. We show that any group G arises as outer automorphism group G cong Out(A(S)) of the automorphism group A(S), for some doubly homogeneous chain (S,<=).
We apply results proved in [Li19] to the linear order expansions of non-trivial free homogeneous structures and the universal n-linear order for $n\geq 2$, and prove the simplicity of their automorphism groups.
We investigate the structure of the monoid of endomorphisms of the ordered set $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ of rational numbers. We show that for any countable linearly ordered set $Ω$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of $\operatorname{End}(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Ω$. We characterise those subsets $X$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ that arise as a retract in $(\mathbb{Q},{\leq})$ in terms of topological information concerning $X$. Finally, we establish that a countable group arises as the automorphism group of a countable linearly ordered set, and hence as a maximal…
This article is a contribution to the following problem: does there exist a Polish non-archimedean group (equivalently: automorphism group of a Fraisse limit) that is extremely amenable, and has ample generics. As Fraisse limits whose automorphism groups are extremely amenable must be ordered, i.e., equipped with a linear ordering, we focus on ordered Fraisse limits. We prove that automorphism groups of the universal ordered boron tree, and the universal ordered poset have a comeager conjugacy class but no comeager $2$-dimensional diagonal conjugacy class. We also provide general conditions im…
Kikyo and Shelah showed that if $T$ is a theory with the Strict Order Property in some first-order language $\mathcal{L}$, then in the expanded language $\mathcal{L}_σ:= \mathcal{L}\cup\{σ\}$ with a new unary function symbol $σ$, the bigger theory $T_σ:= T\cup\{``σ\mbox{is an} \mathcal{L}\mbox{-automorphism''}\}$ does not have a model companion. We show in this paper that if, however, we restrict the automorphism and consider the theory $T_σ$ as the base theory $T$ together with a ``restricted'' class of automorphisms, then $T_σ$ can have a model companion in $\mathcal{L}_σ$. We show this in t…
We show that for any countable homogeneous ordered graph $G$, the conjugacy problem for automorphisms of $G$ is Borel complete. In fact we establish that each such $G$ satisfies a strong extension property called ABAP, which implies that the isomorphism relation on substructures of $G$ is Borel reducible to the conjugacy relation on automorphisms of $G$.
We show that the automorphism groups of countably categorical linear orders are extremely amenable. Using methods of Kechris, Pestov, and Todorcevic, we use this fact to derive a structural Ramsey theorem for certain families of finite ordered structures with finitely many partial equivalence relations with convex classes.
It has been proven by Schupp and Bergman that the inner automorphisms of groups can be characterized purely categorically as those group automorphisms that can be coherently extended along any outgoing homomorphism. One is thus motivated to define a notion of (categorical) inner automorphism in an arbitrary category, as an automorphism that can be coherently extended along any outgoing morphism, and the theory of such automorphisms forms part of the theory of covariant isotropy. In this paper, we prove that the categorical inner automorphisms in any category $\mathsf{Group}^{\mathcal{J}}$ of p…
In this paper, we compute universal minimal flows of groups of automorphisms of uncountable $ω$-homogeneous graphs, $K_n$-free graphs, hypergraphs, partially ordered sets, and their extensions with an $ω$-homogeneous ordering. We present an easy construction of such structures, expanding the jungle of extremely amenable groups.
We show that every two-dimensional class of topological similarity, and hence every diagonal conjugacy class of pairs, is meager in the group of order preserving bijections of the rationals and in the group of automorphisms of the randomly ordered rational Urysohn space.
We investigate correspondences between extreme amenability and amenability of automorphism groups of Fraïssé-Hrushovski generic structures that are obtained from smooth classes, and their Ramsey type properties of their smooth classes, similar to Kechris, Pestov and Todorcevic, and Tatch Moore. In particular, we focus on some Fraïssé-Hrushovski generic structures that are obtained from pre-dimension functions. Using these correspondences, we prove that automorphism groups of ordered Hrushovski generic graphs are not extremely amenable in both cases of collapsed and uncollapsed. Moreover, we pr…
We provide an algebraic characterization of strong ordered Abelian groups: An ordered Abelian group is strong iff it has bounded regular rank and almost finite dimension. Moreover, we show that any strong ordered Abelian group has finite Dp-rank. We also provide a formula that computes the exact valued of the Dp-rank of any ordered Abelian group. In particular characterizing those ordered Abelian groups with Dp-rank equal to $n$. We also show the Dp-rank coincides with the Vapnik-Chervonenkis density.
Recently it has been shown that all non-trivial closed permutation groups containing the automorphism group of the random poset are generated by two types of permutations: the first type are permutations turning the order upside down, and the second type are permutations induced by so-called rotations. In this paper we introduce rotations for finite posets, which can be seen as the poset counterpart of Seidel-switch for finite graphs. We analyze some of their combinatorial properties, and investigate in particular the question of when two finite posets are rotation-equivalent. We moreover give…
We show that if we enrich first order logic by allowing quantification over isomorphisms between definable ordered fields the resulting logic, L(Q_{Of}), is fully compact. In this logic, we can give standard compactness proofs of various results. Next, we attempt to get compactness results for some other logics without recourse to diamond, i.e., all our results are in ZFC. We get the full result for the language where we quantify over automorphisms (isomorphisms) of ordered fields in Theorem 6.4. Unfortunately we are not able to show that the language with quantification over automorphisms of …
The study of automorphisms of computable and other structures connects computability theory with classical group theory. Among the noncomputable countable structures, computably enumerable structures are one of the most important objects of investigation in computable model theory. In this paper, we focus on the lattice structure of computably enumerable substructures of a given canonical computable structure. In particular, for a Turing degree $\mathbf{d}$, we investigate the groups of $\mathbf{d}$ -computable automorphisms of the lattice of $\mathbf{d}$-computably enumerable vector spaces, o…
Ordering theorems, characterizing when partial orders of a group extend to total orders, are used to generate hypersequent calculi for varieties of lattice-ordered groups (l-groups). These calculi are then used to provide new proofs of theorems arising in the theory of ordered groups. More precisely: an analytic calculus for abelian l-groups is generated using an ordering theorem for abelian groups; a calculus is generated for l-groups and new decidability proofs are obtained for the equational theory of this variety and extending finite subsets of free groups to right orders; and a calculus f…
Let $\mathrm{G}$ be a subgroup of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S(U)$ of all permutations of a countable set $U$. Let $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$ be the topological closure of $\mathrm{G}$ in the function topology on $U^U$. We initiate the study of the poset $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]:=\{f[U]\mid f\in \overline{\mathrm{G}}\}$ of images of the functions in $\overline{\mathrm{G}}$, being ordered under inclusion. This set $\overline{\mathrm{G}}[U]$ of subsets of the set $U$ will be called the \emph{poset of copies for} the group $\mathrm{G}$. A denomination being justified by the fact that for every …
A characterization is given of the subsets of a group that extend to the positive cone of a right order on the group and used to relate validity of equations in lattice-ordered groups (l-groups) to subsets of free groups that extend to positive cones of right orders. This correspondence is used to obtain new proofs of the decidability of the word problem for free l-groups and generation of the variety of l-groups by the l-group of automorphisms of the real number line. A characterization of the subsets of a group that extend to the positive cone of an order on the group is also used to establi…
We revisit Kolchin's results on definability of differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. In certain classes of differential topological fields, which encompasses ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imaginaries in CODF, we establish a relative Galois correspondence for relatively definable subgroups of the group of differential order automorp…
MV-algebras can be viewed either as the Lindenbaum algebras of Lukasiewicz infinite-valued logic, or as unit intervals of lattice-ordered abelian groups in which a strong order unit has been fixed. The free n-generated MV-algebra Free_n is representable as an algebra of continuous piecewise-linear functions with integer coefficients over the unit cube [0,1]^n. The maximal spectrum of Free_n is canonically homeomorphic to [0,1]^n, and the automorphisms of the algebra are in 1-1 correspondence with the pwl homeomorphisms with integer coefficients of the unit cube. In this paper we prove that the…
MV-algebras can be viewed either as the Lindenbaum algebras of Lukasiewicz infinite-valued logic, or as unit intervals [0,u] of lattice-ordered abelian groups in which a strong order unit u>0 has been fixed. They form an equational class, and the free n-generated free MV-algebra is representable as an algebra of piecewise-linear continuous functions with integer coefficients over the unit n-dimensional cube. In this paper we show that the automorphism group of such a free algebra contains elements having strongly chaotic behaviour, is the sense that their duals are measure-theoretically isomor…
Let $ k $ be a field, $ G $ a totally ordered abelian group and $ \mathbb K = k((G)) $ the maximal field of generalised power series, endowed with the canonical valuation $ v $. We study the group $ v \mathrm{-Aut} K $ of valuation preserving automorphisms of a subfield $ k(G)\subseteq K\subseteq \mathbb K $, where $ k(G) $ is the fraction field of the group ring $ k[G] $. Under the assumption that $ K $ satisfies two lifting properties we are able to generalise and refine Hofberger's decomposition of $ v \mathrm{-Aut}\mathbb K $ and prove a structure theorem decomposing $ v\mathrm{-Aut} K $ i…
We give a detailed proof of Kolchin's results on differential Galois groups of strongly normal extensions, in the case where the field of constants is not necessarily algebraically closed. We closely follow former works due to Pillay and his co-authors which were written under the assumption that the field of constant is algebraically closed. In the present setting, which encompasses the cases of ordered or p-valued differential fields, we find a partial Galois correspondence and we show one cannot expect more in general. In the class of ordered differential fields, using elimination of imagin…
We will answer a question raised by Emmanuel Dror Farjoun concerning the existence of torsion-free abelian groups G such that for any ordered pair of pure elements there is a unique automorphism mapping the first element onto the second one. We will show the existence of such a group of cardinality lambda for any successor cardinal lambda=mu^+ with mu=mu^{aleph_0}.
