We survey a number of models from physics, statistical mechanics, probability theory and combinatorics, which are each described in terms of an orthogonal polynomial ensemble. The most prominent example is apparently the Hermite ensemble, the eigenvalue distribution of the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE), and other well-known ensembles known in random matrix theory like the Laguerre ensemble for the spectrum of Wishart matrices. In recent years, a number of further interesting models were found to lead to orthogonal polynomial ensembles, among which the corner growth model, directed last passage percolation, the PNG droplet, non-colliding random processes, the length of the longest increasing subsequence of a random permutation, and others. Much attention has been paid to universal classes of asymptotic behaviors of these models in the limit of large particle numbers, in particular the spacings between the particles and the fluctuation behavior of the largest particle. Computer simulations suggest that the connections go even farther and also comprise the zeros of the Riemann zeta function. The existing proofs require a substantial technical machinery and heavy tools from various parts of mathematics, in particular complex analysis, combinatorics and variational analysis. Particularly in the last decade, a number of fine results have been achieved, but it is obvious that a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the matter is still lacking. Hence, it seems an appropriate time to provide a surveying text on this research area.
We derive Painlevé--type expressions for the distribution of the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles in the edge scaling limit. The work of Johnstone and Soshnikov (see [7], [10]) implies the immediate relevance of our formulas for the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue of the appropriate Wishart distribution.
A known result in random matrix theory states the following: Given a random Wigner matrix $X$ which belongs to the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), then such matrix $X$ has an invariant distribution under orthogonal conjugations. The goal of this work is to prove the converse, that is, if $X$ is a symmetric random matrix such that it is invariant under orthogonal conjugations, then such matrix $X$ belongs to the GOE. We will prove this using some elementary properties of the characteristic function of random variables.
For a natural extension of the circular unitary ensemble of order n, we study as n tends to infinity, the asymptotic behavior of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the spectral measure. The last term of this sequence is the characteristic polynomial. After taking logarithm and rescaling, we obtain a process indexed by t in [0,1]. We show that it converges to a deterministic limit, and we describe the fluctuations and the large deviations.
Consider a symmetric unitary random matrix $V=(v_{ij})_{1 \le i,j \le N}$ from a circular orthogonal ensemble. In this paper, we study moments of a single entry $v_{ij}$. For a diagonal entry $v_{ii}$ we give the explicit values of the moments, and for an off-diagonal entry $v_{ij}$ we give leading and subleading terms in the asymptotic expansion with respect to a large matrix size $N$. Our technique is to apply the Weingarten calculus for a Haar-distributed unitary matrix.
We discuss asymptotic properties of a family of discrete probability measures which may be used to model particle configurations with a wall on a set of discrete nodes. The correlations are shown to be determinantal and are expressed in terms of discrete orthogonal polynomials. As an application we study random tilings of the half-hexagon or, equivalently, configurations of non-intersecting lattice paths above a wall, so called water melons.
We study a family of bivariate orthogonal polynomials associated to the deltoid curve. These polynomials arise when classifying bivariate diffusion operators that have discrete spectral decomposition given by orthogonal polynomials with respect to some compactly-supported probability measure on the interior of the deltoid curve.
We describe some examples of classical and explicit h-transforms as particular cases of a general mechanism, which is related to the existence of symmetric diffusion operators having orthogonal polynomials as spectral decomposition.
Multiple orthogonal polynomials are traditionally studied because of their connections to number theory and approximation theory. In recent years they were found to be connected to certain models in random matrix theory. In this paper we introduce the notion of a multiple orthogonal polynomial ensemble (MOP ensemble) and derive some of their basic properties. It is shown that Angelesco and Nikishin systems give rise to MOP ensembles and that the equilibrium problems that are associated with these systems have a natural interpretation in the context of MOP ensembles.
We present a genus expansion-type expression for the expected values of products of traces of expressions involving Haar-distributed orthogonal matrices. As with other real genus expansions, nonorientable surfaces appear, in addition to the orientable surfaces of the complex expansion. We use this expression to demonstrate that independent random matrices which are orthogonally in general position, such as matrices whose distributions are orthogonally invariant, are asymptotically real second-order free.
We derive the limiting matrix kernels for the the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic ensembles scaled at the edge, with proofs of convergence in the operator norms that assure convergence of the determinants.
We study the characteristic polynomials of both the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles. We show that for both ensembles, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomials converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures after normalization for sufficiently small real powers. The main tool is a new asymptotic relation between the fractional moments of the absolute characteristic polynomials of Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary, and Symplectic Ensembles.
We consider some discrete $q$-analogues of the classical continuous orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Building on results due to Morozov, Popolitov and Shakirov, we find representations for the moments of the discrete $q$-Hermite and discrete $q$-Laguerre ensembles in terms of basic hypergeometric series. We find that when the number of particles is suitably randomised, the moments may be represented as basic hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials, with corresponding three-term recurrences in $k$, the order of the moments.
We consider the universality of the nearest neighbour eigenvalue spacing distribution in invariant random matrix ensembles. Focussing on orthogonal and symplectic invariant ensembles, we show that the empirical spacing distribution converges in a uniform way. More precisely, the main result states that the expected Kolmogorov distance of the empirical spacing distribution from its universal limit converges to zero as the matrix size tends to infinity.
We consider discrete orthogonal polynomial ensembles which are discrete analogues of the orthogonal polynomial ensembles in random matrix theory. These ensembles occur in certain problems in combinatorial probability and can be thought of as probability measures on partitions. The Meixner ensemble is related to a two-dimensional directed growth model, and the Charlier ensemble is related to the lengths of weakly increasing subsequences in random words. The Krawtchouk ensemble occurs in connection with zig-zag paths in random domino tilings of the Aztec diamond, and also in a certain simplified…
The aim of this paper is to present a systematic method for computing moments of matrix elements taken from circular orthogonal ensembles (COE). The formula is given as a sum of Weingarten functions for orthogonal groups but the technique for its proof involves Weingarten calculus for unitary groups. As an application, explicit expressions for the moments of a single matrix element of a COE matrix are given.
This is the full version of "Uniform Asymptotics for Polynomials Orthogonal With Respect to a General Class of Discrete Weights and Universality Results for Associated Ensembles: Announcement of Results" appearing on this server and also published in IMRN 2003, no. 15, pp. 821-858.
We consider asymptotics of orthogonal polynomial ensembles, in the macroscopic and mesoscopic scales. We prove both global and local laws of large numbers (analogous to the recently proven local semicircle law for Wigner matrices) under fairly weak conditions on the underlying measure $μ$. Our main tools are a general concentration inequality for determinantal point processes with a kernel that is a self-adjoint projection, and a strengthening of the Nevai condition from the theory of orthogonal polynomials.
We study averages of multiplicative eigenvalue statistics in ensembles of orthogonal Haar distributed matrices, which can alternatively be written as Toeplitz+Hankel determinants. We obtain new asymptotics for symbols with Fisher-Hartwig singularities in cases where some of the singularities merge together, and for symbols with a gap or an emerging gap. We obtain these asymptotics by relying on known analogous results in the unitary group and on asymptotics for associated orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As consequences of our results, we derive asymptotics for gap probabilities in t…
We derive Painlevé--type expressions for the distribution of the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles in the edge scaling limit. This work generalizes to general $m$ the $m=1$ results of Tracy and Widom [23]. The results of Johnstone and Soshnikov (see [15], [19]) imply the immediate relevance of our formulas for the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue of the appropriate Wishart distribution.
We prove that the fluctuations of mesocopic linear statistics for orthogonal polynomial ensembles are universal in the sense that two measures with asymptotic recurrence coefficients have the same asymptotic mesoscopic fluctuations (under an additional assumption on the local regularity of one of the measures). The convergence rate of the recurrence coefficients determines the range of scales on which the limiting fluctuations are identical. Our main tool is an analysis of the Green's function for the associated Jacobi matrices. As a particular consequence we obtain a Central Limit Theorem for…
We obtain factorial moment identities for the Charlier, Meixner and Krawtchouk orthogonal polynomial ensembles. Building on earlier results by Ledoux [Elect. J. Probab. 10, (2005)], we find hypergeometric representations for the factorial moments when the reference measure is Poisson (Charlier ensemble) and geometric (a particular case of the Meixner ensemble). In these cases, if the number of particles is suitably randomised, the factorial moments have a polynomial property, and satisfy three-term recurrence relations and differential equations. In particular, the normalised factorial moments…
We study the fluctuations of linear statistics with polynomial test functions for Multiple Orthogonal Polynomial Ensembles. Multiple Orthogonal Polynomial Ensembles form an important class of determinantal point processes that include random matrix models such as the GUE with external source, complex Wishart matrices, multi-matrix models and others. Our analysis is based on the recurrence matrix for the multiple orthogonal polynomials, that is constructed out of the nearest neighbor recurrences. If the coefficients for the nearest neighbor recurrences have limits, then we show that the right-l…
We prove a certain duality relation for orthogonal polynomials defined on a finite set. The result is used in a direct proof of the equivalence of two different ways of computing the correlation functions of a discrete orthogonal polynomial ensemble.
We demonstrate the asymptotic real second order freeness of Haar distributed orthogonal matrices and an independent ensemble of random matrices. Our main result states that if we have two independent ensembles of random matrices with a real second order limit distribution and one of them is invariant under conjugation by an orthogonal matrix, then the two ensembles are asymptotically real second order free. This captures the known examples of asymptotic real second order freeness introduced by Redelmeier [R1, R2].
We compute the bulk limit of the correlation functions for the uniform measure on lozenge tilings of a hexagon. The limiting determinantal process is a translation invariant extension of the discrete sine process, which also describes the ergodic Gibbs measure of an appropriate slope.
We study the higher-order Euler polynomials and give the corresponding monic orthogonal polynomials, which are Meixner-Pollaczek polynomials with certain arguments and constant factors. Moreover, through a general connection between moments of random variables and the generalized Motzkin numbers, we can obtain a new recurrence formula and a matrix representation for the higher-order Euler polynomials, interpreting them as weighted lattice paths.
The Fisher information of the classical orthogonal polynomials with respect to a parameter is introduced, its interest justified and its explicit expression for the Jacobi, Laguerre, Gegenbauer and Grosjean polynomials found.
The study of several naturally arising "nearest neighbours" random walks benefits from the study of the associated orthogonal polynomials and their orthogonality measure. I consider extensions of this approach to a larger class of random walks. This raises a number of open problems.
We characterize, up to a conjecture, probability distributions of all order finite moments having ultraspherical type generating functions for orthogonal polynomials.
We show that the squared maximal height of the top path among $N$ non-intersecting Brownian bridges starting and ending at the origin is distributed as the top eigenvalue of a random matrix drawn from the Laguerre Orthogonal Ensemble. This result can be thought of as a discrete version of K. Johansson's result that the supremum of the Airy$_2$ process minus a parabola has the Tracy-Widom GOE distribution, and as such it provides an explanation for how this distribution arises in models belonging to the KPZ universality class with flat initial data. The result can be recast in terms of the prob…
We suggest a method of studying the joint probability density (JPD) of an eigenvalue and the associated 'non-orthogonality overlap factor' (also known as the 'eigenvalue condition number') of the left and right eigenvectors for non-selfadjoint Gaussian random matrices of size $N\times N$. First we derive the general finite $N$ expression for the JPD of a real eigenvalue $λ$ and the associated non-orthogonality factor in the real Ginibre ensemble, and then analyze its 'bulk' and 'edge' scaling limits. The ensuing distribution is maximally heavy-tailed, so that all integer moments beyond normali…
