The exceptional zero conjecture relates the first derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function of a rational elliptic curve with split multiplicative reduction at $p$ to its complex $L$-function. Teitelbaum formulated an analogue of Mazur and Tate's refined (multiplicative) version of this conjecture for elliptic curves over the rational function field $\FQ(T)$ with split multiplicative reduction at two places $\fp$ and $\infty$, avoiding the construction of a $\fp$-adic $L$-function. This article proves Teitelbaum's conjecture up to roots of unity by developing Darmon's theory of double integrals over arbitrary function fields. A function field version of Darmon's period conjecture is also obtained.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve which has split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$ and whose analytic rank $r_{an}(E)$ equals one. The main goal of this article is to relate the second order derivative of the Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum $p$-adic $L$-function $L_p(E,s)$ of $E$ to Nekovář's height pairing evaluated on natural elements arising from the Beilinson-Kato elements. Along the way, we extend a Rubin-style formula of Nekovář (or in an alternative wording, correct another Rubin-style formula of his) to apply in the presence of exceptional zeros. Our height formula allows us, among …
We will show a conjecture which reduces Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum conjecture to the known cases. In order to explain its background we will develop an archimedian analog of Iwasawa theory. Moreover consequences of the conjecture which are related to Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture will be discussed.
Mazur, Tate, and Teitelbaum gave a p-adic analogue of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for elliptic curves. We provide a generalization of their conjecture in the good ordinary case to higher dimensional modular abelian varieties over the rationals by constructing the p-adic L-function of a modular abelian variety and showing that it satisfies the appropriate interpolation property. This relies on a careful normalization of the p-adic L-function, which we achieve by a comparison of periods. Our generalization agrees with the conjecture of Mazur, Tate, Teitelbaum in dimension 1 and the …
The exceptional zero phenomenon has been widely studied in the realm of $p$-adic $L$-functions, where the starting point lies in the foundational work of Mazur, Tate and Teitelbaum. This phenomenon also appears in the study of Euler systems, which comes as no surprise given the interaction between these two settings. When this occurs, one is led to study higher order derivatives of the Euler system in order to extract the arithmetic information which is usually encoded in the explicit reciprocity laws. In this work, we focus on the elliptic units of an imaginary quadratic field and study this …
Let $A/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve with split multiplicative reduction at a prime $p$. We prove (an analogue of) a conjecture of Perrin-Riou, relating $p$-adic Beilinson$-$Kato elements to Heegner points in $A(\mathbb{Q})$, and a large part of the rank-one case of the Mazur$-$Tate$-$Teitelbaum exceptional zero conjecture for the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function of $A$. More generally, let $f$ be the weight-two newform associated with $A$, let $f_{\infty}$ be the Hida family of $f$, and let $L_{p}(f_{\infty},k,s)$ be the Mazur$-$Kitagawa two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $f_{\…
There are various reasons why a naive analog of the Maeda conjecture has to fail for Drinfeld cusp forms. Focussing on double cusp forms and using the link found by Teitelbaum between Drinfeld cusp forms and certain harmonic cochains, we observed a while ago that all obvious counterexamples disappear for certain Hecke-invariant subquotients of spaces of Drinfeld cusp forms of fixed weight, which can be defined naturally via representation theory. The present work extends Teitelbaum's isomorphism to an adelic setting and to arbitrary levels, it makes precise the impact of representation theory,…
We formulate a multi-variable p-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for p-ordinary elliptic curves A over number fields K. It generalises the one-variable conjecture of Mazur-Tate-Teitelbaum, who studied the case K=Q and the phenomenon of exceptional zeros. We discuss old and new theoretical evidence towards our conjecture and in particular we fully prove it, under mild conditions, in the following situation: K is imaginary quadratic, A=E_K is the base-change to K of an elliptic curve over the rationals, and the rank of A is either 0 or 1. The proof is naturally divided into a few cases.…
We study the dependence on various parameters of the exceptional set in Vojta's conjecture. In particular, by making use of certain elliptic surfaces, we answer in the negative the often-raised question of whether Vojta's conjecture holds when extended to all algebraic points (that is, if the conjecture holds without fixing a bound on the degree of the algebraic points).
In this work, we study the arithmetic nature of the numbers of the form $n^{\g}$, for $n \in \N$ and $\g\in \C$. We also consider a related conjecture and we show that it is a consequence of the unipresent Schanuel's conjecture.
We prove the exceptional zero conjecture for the symmetric powers of CM cuspidal eigenforms at ordinary primes. In other words, we determine the trivial zeroes of the associated p-adic L-functions, compute the L-invariants, and show that they agree with Greenberg's L-invariants.
We contribute to the exceptional APN conjecture by showing that no polynomial of degree m = 2 r (2 {\ell} + 1) where gcd(r, {\ell}) 2, r 2, {\ell} 1 with a nonzero second leading coefficient can be APN over infinitely many extensions of the base field. More precisely, we prove that for n sufficiently large, all polynomials of F 2 n [x] of such a degree with a nonzero second leading coefficient have a differential uniformity equal to m -- 2.
Let $(a,b,c)$ be a primitive Pythagorean triple. Set $a=m^2-n^2$,$b=2mn$, and $c=m^2+n^2$ with $m$ and $n$ positive coprime integers, $m>n $ and $ m \not \equiv n \pmod 2$. A famous conjecture of Jeśmanowicz asserts that the only positive solution to the Diophantine equation $a^x+b^y=c^z$ is $(x,y,z)(2,2,2).$ In this note, we will prove that for any $n>0$ there exists an explicit constant $c(n)>0$ such that if $m> c(n)$, then the above equation has no exceptional solution when all $x$,$y$ and $z$ are even. Our result improves that of Fu and Yang [11]. As an application, we will show that if $4…
In the present article, we study the conjecture of Sharifi on the surjectivity of the map $\varpi_θ$. Here $θ$ is a primitive even Dirichlet character of conductor $Np$, which is exceptional in the sense of Ohta. After localizing at the prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of the Iwasawa algebra related to the trivial zero of the Kubota\textendash Leopoldt $p$-adic $L$-function $L_p(s,θ^{-1}ω^2)$, we compute the image of $\varpi_{θ,\mathfrak{p}}$ in a local Galois cohomology group and prove that it is an isomorphism. Also, we prove that the residual Galois representations associated to the cohomology of…
We prove certain relations between Satake parameters of cuspidal representations of $\GL_2(\mathbb{A}_{\mathbb{Q}})$ at finite and archimedean places. Consequently, we show that the Ramanujan-Petersson conjecture at a fixed prime $p\nmid N$ for \textit{non-exceptional} Maass forms of level $N$ implies the conjecture at $p$ for \textit{all} Maass forms of level $N$ and the Selberg's $1/4$-eigenvalue conjecture simultaneously. As an application, we improve Kim and Sarnak's $7/64$-bound towards the Satake parameters at all $p\nmid N$ for exceptional Maass forms.
The primary objective of this paper is the study of different instances of the elliptic Stark conjectures of Darmon, Lauder and Rotger, in a situation where the elliptic curve attached to the modular form $f$ has split multiplicative reduction at $p$ and the arithmetic phenomena are specially rich. For that purpose, we resort to the principle of improved $p$-adic $L$-functions and study their $\mathcal L$-invariants. We further interpret these results in terms of derived cohomology classes coming from the setting of diagonal cycles, showing that the same $\mathcal L$-invariant which arises in …
Our goal in this article is to prove a form of $p$-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer formula for the second derivative of the $p$-adic $L$-function associated to a newform $f$ which is non-crystalline semistable at $p$ at its central critical point, by expressing this quantity in terms of a $p$-adic (cyclotomic) regulator defined on an extended trianguline Selmer group. We also prove a two-variable version of this result for height pairings we construct by considering infinitesimal deformations afforded by a Coleman family passing through $f$. This, among other things, leads us to a proof of an a…
Numerical evidence suggests that for only about $2\%$ of pairs $p,p+2$ of twin primes, $p+2$ has more primitive roots than does $p$. If this occurs, we say that $p$ is exceptional (there are only two exceptional pairs with $5 \leq p \leq 10{,}000$). Assuming the Bateman-Horn conjecture, we prove that at least $0.47\%$ of twin prime pairs are exceptional and at least $65.13\%$ are not exceptional. We also conjecture a precise formula for the proportion of exceptional twin primes.
Manin's Conjecture predicts the rate of growth of rational points of a bounded height after removing those lying on an exceptional set. We study whether the exceptional set in Manin's Conjecture is a thin set.
In this short note we discuss the exceptional locus for the Lang-Vojta's conjecture in the case of the complement of two completely reducible hyperplane sections in a cubic surface. Using elementary methods, we show that generically the exceptional set is the union of the remaining 21 lines in the surface. We also describe examples in which the exceptional set is strictly larger.
If $α$ is a non-zero algebraic number, we let $m(α)$ denote the Mahler measure of the minimal polynomial of $α$ over $\mathbb Z$. A series of articles by Dubickas and Smyth, and later by the author, develop a modified version of the Mahler measure called the $t$-metric Mahler measure, denoted $m_t(α)$. For fixed $α\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$, the map $t\mapsto m_t(α)$ is continuous, and moreover, is infinitely differentiable at all but finitely many points, called {\it exceptional points} for $α$. It remains open to determine whether there is a sequence of elements $α_n\in \bar{\mathbb Q}$ such that …

We prove new cases of Vojta's conjectures for surfaces in the context of function fields, with truncation equal to one and providing an effective explicit description of the exceptional set. We also prove a general and explicit result towards Campana's conjecture over complex function fields of curves. Our methods rely on a local study of $ω$-integral varieties.
In this survey paper we study Manin's Conjecture from a geometric perspective. The focus of the paper is the recent conjectural description of the exceptional set in Manin's Conjecture due to Lehmann-Sengupta-Tanimoto. After giving an extensive background, we give a precise description of this set and compute it in many examples.
Let $(a, b, c)$ be a primitive Pythagorean triple parameterized as $a=u^2-v^2,\ b=2uv,\ c=u^2+v^2$,\ where $u>v>0$ are co-prime and not of the same parity. In 1956, L. Je{ś}manowicz conjectured that for any positive integer $n$, the Diophantine equation $(an)^x+(bn)^y=(cn)^z$ has only the positive integer solution $(x,y,z)=(2,2,2)$. In this connection we call a positive integer solution $(x,y,z)\ne (2,2,2)$ with $n>1$ exceptional. In 1999 M.-H. Le gave necessary conditions for the existence of exceptional solutions which were refined recently by H. Yang and R.-Q. Fu. In this paper we give a un…
Let f be a Bianchi modular form, that is, an automorphic form for GL(2) over an imaginary quadratic field F. In this paper, we prove an exceptional zero conjecture in the case where f is new at a prime above p. More precisely, for each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of F above p we prove the existence of an L-invariant $\mathcal{L}_{\mathfrak{p}}$, depending only on $\mathfrak{p}$ and f, such that when the p-adic L-function of f has an exceptional zero at $\mathfrak{p}$, its derivative can be related to the classical L-value multiplied by $\mathcal{L}_{\mathfrak{p}}$. The proof uses cohomological method…
Suppose that $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication and with conductor $N$. For each positive integer $m$, the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the torsion points over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ gives rise to a representation of $G_\mathbb{Q}$. A celebrated paper of Serre shows that this representation is surjective for all sufficiently large primes; the other primes are termed \emph{exceptional}. Serre conjectures that there are no exceptional primes $\ell>37$ for any non CM elliptic curv…
Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers were introduced by L. Carlitz in 1935, they are the analogues in positive characteristic of Bernoulli numbers. We prove a conjecture formulated by F. Pellarin and the first author on the non-vanishing modulo a given prime of families of Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers. We then show that the "exceptional zeros" of certain $L$-series are intimately connected to the Bernoulli-Carlitz numbers.
The primary goal of this article is to study $p$-adic Beilinson conjectures in the presence of exceptional zeros for Artin motives over CM fields. In more precise terms, we address a question raised by Hida and Tilouine on the order of vanishing of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to CM fields, by means of a leading term formula we prove in terms of Rubin-Stark elements. In the particular case when the CM field in question is imaginary quadratic, our leading term formula and its consequences we record herein are unconditional.
Let F be a number field, p a prime number. We construct the (multi-variable) p-adic L-function of an automorphic representation of $GL_2(A_F)$ (with certain conditions at places above p and $\infty$), which interpolates the complex L-function at the central critical point. We use this construction to prove that the p-adic L-function of a modular elliptic curve E over F has vanishing order greater or equal to the number of primes above p at which E has split multiplicative reduction, as predicted by the exceptional zero conjecture. This is a generalization of analogous results by Spieß (arXiv:1…
Let F : P^n --> P^n be a morphism of degree d > 1 defined over C. The dynamical Mordell--Lang conjecture says that the intersection of an orbit O_F(P) and a subvariety X of P^n is usually finite. We consider the number of linear subvarieties L in P^n such that the intersection of O_F(P)and L is "larger than expected." When F is the d'th-power map and the coordinates of P are multiplicatively independent, we prove that there are only finitely many linear subvarieties that are "super-spanned" by O_F(P), and further that the number of such subvarieties is bounded by a function of n, independent o…
We study three exceptional theta correspondences for p-adic groups, where one member of the dual pair is the exceptional group G2. We prove the Howe duality conjecture for these dual pairs and a dichotomy theorem, and determine explicitly the theta lifts of all non-cuspidal representations.
In this paper, we determine the bound of the valency of the odd circulant graph which guarantees to be a Ramanujan graph for each fixed number of vertices. In almost of the cases, the bound coincides with the trivial bound, which comes from the trivial estimate of the largest non-trivial eigenvalue of the circulant graph. As exceptional cases, the bound in fact exceeds the trivial one by two. We then prove that such exceptionals occur only in the cases where the number of vertices has at most two prime factors and is represented by a quadratic polynomial in a finite family and, moreover, under…
We give a proof of the Breuil-Schneider conjecture in a large number of cases, which complement the indecomposable case, which we dealt with earlier in [Sor]. In some sense, only the Steinberg representation lies at the intersection of the two approaches. In this paper, we view the conjecture from a broader global perspective. If $U_{/F}$ is any definite unitary group, which is an inner form of $\GL(n)$ over $\K$, we point out how the eigenvariety $\X(K^p)$ parametrizes a global $p$-adic Langlands correspondence between certain $n$-dimensional $p$-adic semisimple representations $ρ$ of $\Gal(\…
We prove a conjecture of G.A. Margulis on the abundance of certain exceptional orbits of partially hyperbolic flows on homogeneous spaces by utilizing a theory of modified Schmidt games, which are modifications of $(α,β)$-games introduced by W. Schmidt in mid-1960s.
Let $f$ be a function on a finite field $F$. The decomposition of the generalized Fermat variety $X$ defined by the multivariate polynomial of degree $n$, $ϕ(x,y,z)=f(x)+f(y)+f(z)$ in $\Bbb{P}^3(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_2)$, plays a crucial role in the study of almost perfect non-linear (APN) functions and exceptional APN functions. Their structure depends fundamentally on the Fermat varieties corresponding to the monomial functions of exceptional degrees $n=2^k+1$ and $n=2^{2k}-2^k+1$ (Gold and Kasami-Welch numbers, respectively). Very important results for these have been obtained by Janwa, McG…
We conjecture that the exceptional set in Manin's Conjecture has an explicit geometric description. Our proposal includes the rational point contributions from any generically finite map with larger geometric invariants. We prove that this set is contained in a thin subset of rational points, verifying there is no counterexample to Manin's Conjecture which arises from an incompatibility of geometric invariants.
Almost Perfect Nonlinear (APN) functions are very useful in cryptography, when they are used as S-Boxes, because of their good resistance to differential cryptanalysis. An APN function $f:\mathbb{F}_{2^n}\rightarrow\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$ is called exceptional APN if it is APN on infinitely many extensions of $\mathbb{F}_{2^n}$. Aubry, McGuire and Rodier conjectured that the only exceptional APN functions are the Gold and the Kasami-Welch monomial functions. They established that a polynomial function of odd degree is not exceptional APN provided the degree is not a Gold number $(2^k+1)$ or a Kasami…
