We consider the phenomenon of forced symmetry breaking in a symmetric Hamiltonian system on a symplectic manifold. In particular we study the persistence of an initial relative equilibrium subjected to this forced symmetry breaking. We see that, under certain nondegeneracy conditions, an estimate can be made on the number of bifurcating relative equilibria.
We propose an extension of the one dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the case of maps on the cylinder. The kind of maps considered are commonly referred as quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We prove that the fixed point of the one dimensional renormalization operator extends to a fixed point of the quasi-periodic forced renormalization operator. We also prove that the operator is differentiable around the fixed point and we study its derivative. Then we consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps which is a unimodal one dimensional map with a f…
We study one-parameter families of quasi-periodically forced monotone interval maps and provide sufficient conditions for the existence of a parameter at which the respective system possesses a non-uniformly hyperbolic attractor. This is equivalent to the existence of a sink-source orbit, that is, an orbit with positive Lyapunov exponent both forwards and backwards in time. The attractor itself is a non-continuous invariant graph with negative Lyapunov exponent, often referred to as "SNA". In contrast to former results in this direction, our conditions are C^2-open in the fibre maps. By applyi…
In this paper we are concerned with quasi-periodic forced one dimensional maps. We consider a two parametric family of quasi-periodically forced maps such that the one dimensional map (before forcing) is unimodal and it has a full cascade of period doubling bifurcations. Between one period doubling and the next one it is known that there exist a parameter value where the $2^n$-periodic orbit is superatracting. In a previous work we proposed an extension of the one-dimensional (doubling) renormalization operator to the quasi-periodic case. We proved that, if the family satisfies suitable hypoth…
A piecewise-linear model with a single degree of freedom is derived from first principles for a driven vertical cantilever beam with a localized mass and symmetric stops. The resulting piecewise-linear dynamical system is smoothed by a switching function (nonlinear homotopy). For the chosen smoothing function it is shown that the smoothing can induce bifurcations in certain parameter regimes. These induced bifurcations disappear when the transition of the switching is sufficiently and increasingly localized as the impact becomes harder. The bifurcation structure of the impact oscillator respon…
We explore different families of quasi-periodically Forced Logistic Maps for the existence of universality and self-similarity properties. In the bifurcation diagram of the Logistic Map it is well known that there exist parameter values $s_n$ where the $2^n$-periodic orbit is superattracting. Moreover these parameter values lay between one period doubling and the next. Under quasi-periodic forcing, the superattracting periodic orbits give birth to two reducibility-loss bifurcations in the two dimensional parameter space of the Forced Logistic Map, both around the points $s_n$. In the present w…
In Part I of this paper, we have used spectral submanifold (SSM) theory to construct reduced-order models for harmonically excited mechanical systems with internal resonances. In that setting, extracting forced response curves formed by periodic orbits of the full system was reduced to locating the solution branches of equilibria of the corresponding reduced-order model. Here we use bifurcations of the equilibria of the reduced-order model to predict bifurcations of the periodic response of the full system. Specifically, we identify Hopf bifurcations of equilibria and limit cycles in reduced m…
In this work we consider a general class of $2$-dimensional hybrid systems. Assuming that the system possesses an attracting equilibrium point, we show that, when periodically driven with a square-wave pulse, the system possesses a periodic orbit which may undergo smooth and nonsmooth grazing bifurcations. We perform a semi-rigorous study of the existence of periodic orbits for a particular model consisting of a leaky integrate-and-fire model with a dynamic threshold. We use the stroboscopic map, which in this context is a $2$-dimensional piecewise-smooth discontinuous map. For some parameter …
We study the dynamics of the Forced Logistic Map in the cylinder. We compute a bifurcation diagram in terms of the dynamics of the attracting set. Different properties of the attracting set are considered, as the Lyapunov exponent and, in the case of having a periodic invariant curve, its period and its reducibility. This reveals that the parameter values for which the invariant curve doubles its period are contained in regions of the parameter space where the invariant curve is reducible. Then we present two additional studies to explain this fact. In first place we consider the images and th…
Classical conditions for asymptotic stability of periodic solutions bifurcating from a limit cycle rely on the derivative of the corresponding bifurcation function F at the bifurcation point t. We show that for analytic systems this result is the one of topological nature, namely the topological index ind(t,F) is conclusive versus the sign of the derivative (d/dt)F(t). This allows to detect asymptotic stability also in the case when (d/dt)F(t)=0.
We present a general method for systematically investigating the dynamics and bifurcations of a physical nonlinear experiment. In particular, we show how the odd-number limitation inherent in popular non-invasive control schemes, such as (Pyragas) time-delayed or washout-filtered feedback control, can be overcome for tracking equilibria or forced periodic orbits in experiments. To demonstrate the use of our non-invasive control, we trace out experimentally the resonance surface of a periodically forced mechanical nonlinear oscillator near the onset of instability, around two saddle-node bifurc…
Distributed delays modeled by 'weak generic kernels' are introduced in the well-known coupled Landau-Stuart system, as well as a chaotic van der Pol-Rayleigh system with parametric forcing. The systems are close via the 'linear chain trick'. Linear stability analysis of the systems and conditions for Hopf bifurcation which initiates oscillations are investigated, including deriving the normal form at bifurcation, and deducing the stability of the resulting limit cycle attractor. The value of the delay parameter $a=a_{Hopf}$ at Hopf bifurcation picks out the onset of Amplitude Death(AD) in all …
Inspired by an example of Grebogi et al [1], we study a class of model systems which exhibit the full two-step scenario for the nonautonomous Hopf bifurcation, as proposed by Arnold [2]. The specific structure of these models allows a rigorous and thorough analysis of the bifurcation pattern. In particular, we show the existence of an invariant 'generalised torus' splitting off a previously stable central manifold after the second bifurcation point. The scenario is described in two different settings. First, we consider deterministically forced models, which can be treated as continuous skew p…
We study a generic model for the interaction of negative delayed feedback and periodic forcing that was first introduced by Ghil et al. in the context of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) climate system. This model takes the form of a delay differential equation and has been shown in previous work to be capable of producing complicated dynamics, which is organised by resonances between the external forcing and dynamics induced by feedback. For certain parameter values, we observe in simulations the sudden disappearance of (two-frequency dynamics on) tori. This can be explained by the fol…
We consider the NLS equation with a linear double well potential. Symmetry breaking, i.e., the localisation of an order parameter in one of the potential wells that can occur when the system is symmetric, has been studied extensively. However, when the wells are asymmetric, only a few analytical works have been reported. Using double Dirac delta potentials, we study rigorously the effect of such asymmetry on the bifurcation type. We show that the standard pitchfork bifurcation becomes broken and instead a saddle-centre type is obtained. Using a geometrical approach, we also establish the insta…
Bifurcations leading to complex dynamical behaviour of non-linear systems are often encountered when the characteristics of feedback circuits in the system are varied. In systems with many unknown or varying parameters, it is an interesting, but difficult problem to find parameter values for which specific bifurcations occur. In this paper, we develop a loop breaking approach to evaluate the influence of parameter values on feedback circuit characteristics. This approach allows a theoretical classification of feedback circuit characteristics related to possible bifurcations in the system. Base…
We consider a small SO(2)-equivariant perturbation of a reaction-diffusion system on the sphere, which is equivariant with respect to the group SO(3) of all rigid rotations. We consider a normally hyperbolic SO(3)-group orbit of a rotating wave on the sphere that persists to a normally hyperbolic SO(2)-invariant manifold $M(ε)$. We investigate the effects of this forced symmetry breaking by studying the perturbed dynamics induced on $M(ε)$ by the above reaction-diffusion system. We prove that depending on the frequency vectors of the rotating waves that form the relative equilibrium SO(3)u_{0}…
We provide a complete symmetry-breaking bifurcation control for equivariant smooth differential systems with Bogdanov-Takens singularities. Controller coefficient space is partitioned by critical controller sets into different connected regions. The connected regions provide a classification for all qualitatively different dynamics of the controlled system. Hence, a state feedback controller design with four small controller coefficients is proposed for an efficient and full singular symmetry-breaking control. Our approach works well for nonlinear control systems with both controllable and unc…
In this paper two important aspects related to Caputo fractional-order discrete variant of a class of maps defined on the complex plane, are analytically and numerically revealed: attractors symmetry-broken induced by the fractional-order and the sensible problem of determining the right bifurcation diagram of discrete systems of fractional-order. It is proved that maps of integer order with dihedral symmetry or cycle symmetry loose their symmetry once they are transformed in fractional-order maps. Also, it is conjectured that, contrarily to integer-order maps, determining the bifurcation diag…
Motivated by questions originating from the study of a class of shallow student-teacher neural networks, methods are developed for the analysis of spurious minima in classes of gradient equivariant dynamics related to neural nets. In the symmetric case, methods depend on the generic equivariant bifurcation theory of irreducible representations of the symmetric group on $n$ symbols, $S_n$; in particular, the standard representation of $S_n$. It is shown that spurious minima do not arise from spontaneous symmetry breaking but rather through a complex deformation of the landscape geometry that ca…
We investigate the motion of a massless body interacting with the Maxwell relative equilibrium, which consists of n bodies of equal mass at the vertices of a regular polygon that rotates around a central mass. The massless body has three equilibrium Zn-orbits from which families of Lyapunov orbits emerge. Numerical continuation of these families using a boundary value formulation is used to construct the bifurcation diagram for the case n=7, also including some secondary and tertiary bifurcating families. We observe symmetry-breaking bifurcations in this system, as well as certain period-doubl…
Convection in an infinite fluid layer is often modelled by considering a finite box with periodic boundary conditions in the two horizontal directions. The translational invariance of the problem implies that any solution can be translated horizontally by an arbitrary amount. Some solutions travel, but those solutions that are invariant under reflections in both horizontal directions cannot travel, since motion in any horizontal direction is balanced by an equal and opposite motion elsewhere. Equivariant bifurcation theory allows us to understand the steady and time-dependent ways in which a p…
There is a growing awareness that catastrophic phenomena in biology and medicine can be mathematically represented in terms of saddle-node bifurcations. In particular, the term `tipping', or critical transition has in recent years entered the discourse of the general public in relation to ecology, medicine, and public health. The saddle-node bifurcation and its associated theory of catastrophe as put forth by Thom and Zeeman has seen applications in a wide range of fields including molecular biophysics, mesoscopic physics, and climate science. In this paper, we investigate a simple model of a …
Rotating waves are periodic solutions in SO(2) equivariant dynamical systems. Their precession frequency changes with parameters and it may change sign, passing through zero. When this happens, the dynamical system is very sensitive to imperfections that break the SO(2) symmetry and the waves may become trapped by the imperfections, resulting in steady solutions that exist in a finite region in parameter space. This is the so-called pinning phenomenon. In this study, we analyze the breaking of the SO(2) symmetry in a dynamical system close to a Hopf bifurcation whose frequency changes sign alo…
We consider two parameter families of differential equations on a Banach space X, where the parameters c and $ε$ are such that: (1) when $ε=0$, the differential equations are symmetric under the action of the group of one-dimensional translations SE(1) acting on X, whereas when $ε\neq 0$, this translation symmetry is broken, (2) when $ε=0$, the symmetric differential equations admit a smooth family of relative equilibria (travelling waves) parametrized by the drift speed c, with $c=0$ corresponding to steady-states. Under certain hypotheses on the differential equations and on the Banach space…
We consider discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations of n sites with periodic boundary conditions. These equations have n branches of standing waves that bifurcate from zero. Traveling waves appear as a symmetry-breaking from the standing waves for different amplitudes. The bifurcation is proved using the global Rabinowitz alternative in subspaces of symmetric functions. As examples, we present applications to the Schrödinger and Saturable lattices.
The asymmetrically forced, damped Duffing oscillator is introduced as a prototype model for analyzing the homoclinic tangle of symmetric dissipative systems with \textit{symmetry breaking} disturbances. Even a slight fixed asymmetry in the perturbation may cause a substantial change in the asymptotic behavior of the system, e.g. transitions from two sided to one sided strange attractors as the other parameters are varied. Moreover, slight asymmetries may cause substantial asymmetries in the relative size of the basins of attraction of the unforced nearly symmetric attracting regions. These cha…
For a 2-D coupled PDE-ODE bulk-cell model, we investigate symmetry-breaking bifurcations that can emerge when two bulk diffusing species are coupled to two-component nonlinear intracellular reactions that are restricted to occur only within a disjoint collection of small circular compartments, or "cells", of a common small radius that are confined in a bounded 2-D domain. Outside of the union of these cells, the two bulk species with comparable diffusivities and bulk degradation rates diffuse and globally couple the spatially segregated intracellular reactions through Robin boundary conditions…
Nonlinear controlled plants with Bogdanov-Takens singularity may experience surprising changes in their number of equilibria, limit cycles and/or their stability types when the controllers slightly vary in the vicinity of critical parameter varieties. Each such a change is called a local bifurcation. We derive novel results with regards to truncated parametric normal form classification of the generalized cusp plants. Then, we suggest effective nonlinear bifurcation control law designs for precisely locating and accurately controlling many different types of bifurcations for two measurable pla…
Effects of immune delay on symmetric dynamics are investigated within a model of antigenic variation in malaria. Using isotypic decomposition of the phase space, stability problem is reduced to the analysis of a cubic transcendental equation for the eigenvalues. This allows one to identify periodic solutions with different symmetries arising at a Hopf bifurcation. In the case of small immune delay, the boundary of the Hopf bifurcation is found in a closed form in terms of system parameters. For arbitrary values of the time delay, general expressions for the critical time delay are found, which…
